Football was quite different those days and European teams could not rely on South American footballers, definitely Latin American leagues were the strongest ones during Pele's time. Palmeiras, for instance, won against Real Madrid twice, one of them in 1969 without too much effort 2 x 0 in Spain. The best clubs and players were in South American, even in 90ies I watched spectacular matches in Brazil with Rivaldo, Romário, Djalminha, Cafu and Roberto Carlos. Let's accept that before having money involved, best players and clubs were especially in Latin America.

Football was quite different those days and European teams could not rely on South American footballers, definitely Latin American leagues were the strongest ones during Pele's time. Palmeiras, for instance, won against Real Madrid twice, one of them in 1969 without too much effort 2 x 0 in Spain. The best clubs and players were in South American, even in 90ies I watched spectacular matches in Brazil with Rivaldo, Romário, Djalminha, Cafu and Roberto Carlos. Let's accept that before having money involved, best players and clubs were especially in Latin America.
