Scott, been watching you forever. I always seem to find another awesome video that I haven't seen before. Excellent, Thank you and thanks for all of the inspiration and great teachings!
12yrs on and this is still one of my favourite SBL videos. This is where I first saw the line selector being used like this and it was a game changer! I have a clean signal blended with my FX signal and it's amazing especially with the wah or envelope filter blended with the clean slap tone👌
The best system for a bass pedal board is parallel processing. This system is used by Geddy Lee and Billy Sheehan and it is also inspired by the old Ric-o-sound from Rickenbacker. Split the signal 4 ways into 4 different chains or lines that run parallel to each other and then recombine them. Then you can mix clean and dirty signals together. When you run series and add distortion or overdrive then you can lose low end. Running parallel you can have fuzz and low end.
real helpful info...been playing for 30 years, still trying to find my "right" sound on stage...and with no formal bass training, really just a trial and error thing. thanks a bunch.
This is really cool. You can also use the Line Selector to get that Royal Blood thing, right? This is the RB thing and more with all the synth stuff. Great detailed walk through. Can't wait to get to the amp room and perform some mad science like at 10:31.
nice demo of your pedalboard. i 've checked out the videos on your website , they are actually helpful for aspiring bass players , you are doing great service to music by giving free lessons & tutorials. may god bless you with long , healthy & wealthy life ........ cheers !!!!
Hey scott if you are looking to add some more effects to your setup. You cannot go wrong with a phaser, flanger, chorus, and even a reverb pedal. Since you play jazz you might want to get another octave pedal to use as a booster effect. I have found that using a good compressor help to round out the sound. Or you can get a multi bass effects processor.
Scott - take the time and plug your markbass supersynth to the computer - it's also a great octave pedal, just needs some fiddling with. Great video, you chose a very smooth bass tone approach with your effects (compare to mine).
A little late to the party, I know... but if you're still looking for a suitable delay, I'd highly recommend the TC Electronic Flashback 2 - you can use the "stereo" input to plug in an external tap tempo pedal (and their MASH functionality is awesome!!)
Scott, did you know that in America we have a department store called Bullocks? I only shop there to find what I don’t need lol. I have owned my OC-2 since they first started making them. Still works like it did first time out of the box. It’s value is appreciating like a bottle of fine wine if what I see on Reverb is accurate but it’s not for sale at any price because I would have to buy another. OC-3 is Bullocks, an electronic malfunction waiting to happen IMHO. But, I digress. Distortion?!?! On bass??? Excellent!! Blower Box really blows my mind, never mind the Bullocks LoL. I have had the honor of jamming with a drummer who was in a very successful eighties band that brought electronics to the forefront back in the day. I suggested a keyboard player to join us and his reply was “I hate keyboards” lol. I’ll be searching your videos for a replacement for the stuff you said you intend to bung into the heap. I understand why the chuner is first in your lineup but can you please explain the reasoning for the way you line up the rest of the effects? Does one effect drown out the other if not aligned in a certain order?
I like the Boss Octaver/DS-1 sound you make, that's pretty creative. Some things you might consider to replace your bass synth pedal are the Digitech Synth Wah (very inexpensive), the Line 6 FM4, or something like an Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander. You might combine these with a Soundblox Envelope Filter/Hot Hand. I have all of these pedals on a board. The most versatile of these is the FM4, but you must play monophonic lines on many of the patches unless you want it not to go stupid. Thanks!
Interesting set up. Very different from my board. I'm not as synth oriented. (Fuzz, Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Compressor, Delay, and the basic Ibanez Synth) But your deal has certainly stirred up some ideas for me on what different things I can do.
Hey Scott, I love your videos!! I consider myself a professional bassist since this is all I do for a living, but I can't seem to stop learning from every single of your videos, from the easiest ones to the most complex ones!! One question: is your OC-2 a Japanese made or a Taiwanese? I'm looking for one of those and I see people on TH-cam with both of them, can't really tell much of a difference between them
Hey Scott, I was wondering if you have ever heard of the company Source Audio? You sounded like if you could, you want to take all of your pedals to digital and still have a great low end and tone. The Mulitwave Distortion and Envelope Filter could easily replace some of your pedal board and more. The company also just came out with an Echo/Delay/Reverb pedal that looks very interesting. I think you should check them out. I love mine, they do everything for me. Happy Playing!
You could probably use a Boss ME50-B to produce all these sounds, although you'd still need the Moog for the LFO, but the Boss also has a reso-bass synth which is usefull with the assignable swell pedal, Korg did a guitar-synth in the late 70's called the X-911 that produces the synth bass sounds you're getting and more. Love that Moog though...
Delay solution...the Boss DD-20 has 4 programmable presets and you can choose tap tempo, or dial in bpm or ms delay. got mine used about 1/2 price used.
Awesome video. I used the boss dd-6 myself for delay don't have trouble with it, you also have two out channels you can get some interesting results recording. Great ideas with the moog am defo getting on that one when I can get hold of one.
Great video, thanks for the time you spend sharing your knowledge to enhance all our abilities. I'm currently using (have) EBS pedals. MultiComp, Bass IQ, OctaBass and the MultiDrive. I'm considering swapping out the MultiDrive for a EBS FuzzMo. But after reviewing the FM, I don't hear much difference, just a couple extra knobs. Am I missing something? *I forgot to mention*, I'm running these pedals through either an Acoustic 320/480 rig or a 370/406 (narrow cab) rig. Additionally I use a YAMAHA Majic Stomp for tuning and Jazz style effect.
TU2, LMB3, ODB3, GEB7, BF3, CEB3. Chorus and flanger could go either way round. Also, some people like the limiter enhancer at the end of the chain. Swap things around until you're happy with it.
Scott! A+ I’ve always loved ya bro! With the volume pedal! It’s great to have a splitter near the beginning then to fester ( feather ) the second tier back into the }clean[ chain with a volume pedal! The skies the limit! Stay cracked!,! Devine Amino even the half of it!
There is no set way of doing it, and it depends on how you want to use certain things. Personally i would go TU-2, OBD-3, BF-3 then the CEB-3. The LMB-3 can go either before (after tuner) or at the end, same with the EQ, depending on what you like, but my best suggestion is to experiment and see what you like.
hey scott.. i really like what you do... I' m from argentina and fortunately, i know some english so i can follow you through your lessons. Anyway, i would like to hear your bass lines working with other instruments lines... what i'm trying to say is: have you got any videos of you with other people?
1:32 Boss OC-2 Octave 3:12 Boss DS-1 Distortion 4:07 Markbass Super Synth (to be replaced) 5:24 Moog Music MF-101 Lowpass Filter 6:35 TC Electronic Flashback 2 (to be replaced) 7:46 Boss LS-2 Line Selector / EBS OctaBass
One thing I don't quite get: from the splitter you've a series of pedals that finally go to the amp or desk. Also from the splitter is your EBS giving you low end, where does that signal go to, or how do the two signals recombine? Apologies if this is a daft question, I've never used a splitter.
for a polyphonic pitch shifter, have you checked out electro harmonix's pitchfork? it seems to handle lower notes better than your boss, handles chords like a champ and has a nifty little "latch" button that switches the activation switch from normal to being on only when the switch is held down. makes for some interesting playing. really suggest checking one of those out to see if it suits you. love the channel and thanks for all the free lessons!
Great video! There isn't any compressor, right? Or maybe in the rack...? but if you had that pedalboard with a compressor, would the compressor be before the pedal board or after?
Hey Scott! 1st of all, thanks for all the info you make available. I have a question though: Do you have a good solution for changing the tunning of the bass (for instance: E to Eb) via effect pedals (such as digitech) that doesn't affect the original tone that much? I'm currently using a Korg AX3000B with a pitch shifter, but the result is only ok (since i'm using a little bit of distortion, the tone change doesn't show all that much). Can you help me, please? Thanks!
Hey Scott, do you use the octabass as an always on pedal even for your clean tone? Or do you turn it just on when playing synth sounds for the bottom end?
Hi Scott thanks for all the great vids. I am desperately trying to work out what size pedalboard i need and struggling to say the least ha ha. I also have a moogfooger and have found it hard to get any examples showing it on a board. What size board are you using and make ? would be really good to have a reference point to start. Thanks
Scott I've these pedals all Boss: TU-2 Tuner, LMB-3 Limiter, GEB-7 EQ, ODB3 Overdrive, CEB- 3 Chorus, BF-3 Flanger. Which order should I arrange the pedals? I believe the TU-2 is first.. is the LMB-3 next followed by the ODB-3? Then what? I'm running the pedals straight into the amp input. I've no FX Loop.
I've tried using the ls2 a similar way. I kept getting a humming sound when connected to another amp. I was told to get a Radial aby pedal to fix the ground and polarity issues. Does this make sense and why didn't you get the same problem as I do. Thanks for being you because you rock.
Looks like a guitar glove. They aren't super common but nothing wrong with them. It helps the hand slide around the neck without binding which speeds up slides and the like. Some people get sweaty palms and especially in humid environments it makes your hand bind easily which makes neck slides harder. Since he opted for finger on gloves it's likely he has sensitive finger tips or has a reason not to build thick calous.
Ive got the Super Synth too and, like yourself, I'm gradually losing favour with it. Its such a pain fiddling with settings via a computer at home for a few hrs whilst playing at low volume, then going down to the practise room and the newly saved settings being garbage at gigging volume! I'd prefer to have the ability to adjust the controls on the fly.
Scott, have you played around with the Boss GT-10B multi-effects unit? It has respectable emulations of all the effects on your board. I'm curious if you have played with it and what your opinion is. Thanks!
hey scott have you tried a boss syb-5 bass synth? I think it works a treat but so far seems like a monosynth. tracking is pretty good but not perfect. I guess if you really want a great tracking synth pedal you can go for the Roland GR-55 but that's like $700
Question. Do you plug all this into the front of your amp into the input or do you go to the back of the amp between the preamp and power amp? Do you have two lines that get plugged in?
Cool video, here is a question i have. What are some good pedal boards or cases one can purchase for like 5-6 pedals? right now i don't have a pedal board itself but would love to purchase a good one. Thanks in advance.
How is that line selector wired up to the amp and bass etc? I'm thinking of using one to add more bottom end to my bass distortion , think it would work?
Scott's Bass Lessons Your sound is really good. I need a compressor and i think i'm gonna choose the EBS one. May you give come some advices about its placement on my pedal board ? (which is bass / tuner / Boss Octaver / Bass Blogger / EHX bass balls / Digitech Bass Chorus ( An old and underated relic). I front of all of after ? Thank you
Have a look at the Electro Harmonix Octave Multiplexer. you get really great subs and can add some fuzz on top of it. thats what I usually use for that song. OC2 is amazing though
Fantastic !! :D i needed this help thanks Quick question tho would i be able to use 'Ebs octabass' and a distortion to get that (maroon5 - moves like jagger) sound and that club bass sound, or would i have to use a boss octave pedal and distortion instead? whats the difference between 'Ebs octabass' and 'Boss octave'?
Every time I watch one of Scott's lessons, which is quite often, I think, "What a lovely human being".
Very true.
Agreed.Odd feet, though....
hi toes are longer than my fingers !!
I was just going to say that! He really is.
ive been playing for over 10 years now, i never had gotten to the level you are now, god your gear is fantastic
Scott, been watching you forever. I always seem to find another awesome video that I haven't seen before. Excellent, Thank you and thanks for all of the inspiration and great teachings!
the groove level of this guy is beyond beyond.
Funkmentality i cant tell if im amazing or he's decent

Scott I am a big fan and want to thank you for all the great stuff you post. Nothing like you out there.
I love you scott.... you're so enthusisatic. Keep up the good work.
This man has been infused with the essence of groove. I love it

that quality pedalboard greetings from Guatemala
Thanks a bunch Scott great rig rundown on your pedals.... super cool sounds
Very nice, that pedal board setup is sick. Thanks for the video Scott. You make me want to spend more money on my board, ha.
Wow, imagine that synth pedal with a fretless bass, it's like MS-DOS all over again
nice demo of your pedalboard. i 've checked out the videos on your website , they are actually helpful for aspiring bass players , you are doing great service to music by giving free lessons & tutorials.
may god bless you with long , healthy & wealthy life ........ cheers !!!!
Pls make an updated version of this, and link it in the description, & this comment. Would be very cool to see the evolution.
Wow, awesome man. Such a smart choice by by splitting the line; that sounded like the ideal pedal-board EQ that I've been searching for. Thankyou!

I can see very useful tool with your synth sounds. As long as it's in the right places and not overused.... I didn't know bass could be used that way!

There's a pedal you definately should check out. Microtubes B3K (or B7K) by Darkglass Electronics. Excellent bass distortion!

pause it at exactly 0:16... :)
Scott did you ever replace the Markbass Super Synth? If so, what was it with, because i really love the tone of it, just not the footprint.
they didnt have the clip on tuners back in 2012 which are so great now! Great video. curious what pedals have replaced some of these in past 5 years
Nice. Thanks to share how your pedal set is set

Thanks so much Sir for all the great Vids and advice.
Octaver is the thing for bass! Been usinc oc3, obd3 and ehx bass preacher plus bf3 flanger
Love an Octaver dude! 🙌🏻🧡🔥
Hey Scott, do you use the octabass as an always on pedal even for your clean tone? Or do you turn it just on when playing synth sounds for the bottom end?
go for the ehx bass micro synthesizer. it will give you all of those synth sounds you want with quick and easy adjustment for different sounds
Hi Scott thanks for all the great vids. I am desperately trying to work out what size pedalboard i need and struggling to say the least ha ha. I also have a moogfooger and have found it hard to get any examples showing it on a board. What size board are you using and make ? would be really good to have a reference point to start. Thanks
Awesome video !!
I was just checking to see I should put my delay last fuct around and learned something run a bottom end signal to a separate amp!
I've got the boss ME6B,ME8B and mixing the octave with distortion and auto wah sounds amazing. Wah octave is my favourite though
Nice effects!! I would love to see footage of you using that in a gig setting!!
Boss Line selector is fantastic! Everybody should have one : )
So you send this 2 signals to the same cab ? Or do you play stereo ?
This Line Selector seems to be cheap and useful, thank you for this 🙏
@devinebass dude thank you for these videos, all of them are top class stuff!! thanks bro my bass playing has improved a huge deal!! God Bless!
Check out the Pedaltrain Mini. They have a lot of sizes if that's not right for you.
What a lovely bloke x
The best octaver is the 80's Japanese OC-2. It has Octaver on the front as opposed to Octave. Mine tracks down to a low Ab pretty easily
great video ... hope you can afford shoes soon !
+Paul D Pearce Haha he probably gets a huge discount ;)
Unless some factory would come up with bass-kets shoes, I guess there's little hope ...
He was sponsored by New Balance after this.
I've tried using the ls2 a similar way. I kept getting a humming sound when connected to another amp. I was told to get a Radial aby pedal to fix the ground and polarity issues. Does this make sense and why didn't you get the same problem as I do. Thanks for being you because you rock.

Thank you Scott !!! the best as always
scott how about an update on your pedal board? you still using the same pedals? what would you recommend someone just getting in effects to start with
Ive got the Super Synth too and, like yourself, I'm gradually losing favour with it. Its such a pain fiddling with settings via a computer at home for a few hrs whilst playing at low volume, then going down to the practise room and the newly saved settings being garbage at gigging volume! I'd prefer to have the ability to adjust the controls on the fly.
Really enjoyed this video, very helpful
Great work, Scott!
Scott, have you played around with the Boss GT-10B multi-effects unit? It has respectable emulations of all the effects on your board.
I'm curious if you have played with it and what your opinion is. Thanks!
I tried it and it gets soo much easier playing fast, glissandos are effortless! But it's too much of a hassle, I think.
Great stuff sir ☮
hey scott have you tried a boss syb-5 bass synth? I think it works a treat but so far seems like a monosynth. tracking is pretty good but not perfect. I guess if you really want a great tracking synth pedal you can go for the Roland GR-55 but that's like $700
Question. Do you plug all this into the front of your amp into the input or do you go to the back of the amp between the preamp and power amp? Do you have two lines that get plugged in?
Your signal sounds compressed as well. Do you use the amp head's on board compressor handle the honors?
Cool video, here is a question i have. What are some good pedal boards or cases one can purchase for like 5-6 pedals? right now i don't have a pedal board itself but would love to purchase a good one. Thanks in advance.
Could you make a video explaining the line selector more in depth? That's the only thing that really confuses me :3
Scott is the best!
Have you got an update video with the replacements.
I never used fx but only coz I had no idea how to set up... So, cheers for being so. Informative..:-))
Do you recommend use a Noise gate pedal?
Yeah, thats why he uses a line splitter, sends a signal on a parallel chain into just the octa-bass pedal, retaining the lowend
wooou...you 'r Pedal Board is awesome!!
Very very informative. Thanks!
How is that line selector wired up to the amp and bass etc? I'm thinking of using one to add more bottom end to my bass distortion , think it would work?
Hey scott, yo have some lesson for PLAY AND SING practice, i tried to play but i miss the rythm.. thanks!!
Buenas noches
una consulta q pedales / efectos utilizas? me podrias mencionar? por favor..
Gracias
Scott's Bass Lessons Your sound is really good. I need a compressor and i think i'm gonna choose the EBS one. May you give come some advices about its placement on my pedal board ? (which is bass / tuner / Boss Octaver / Bass Blogger / EHX bass balls / Digitech Bass Chorus ( An old and underated relic). I front of all of after ? Thank you
May I asking Brand and model of those effect pedal? it such interesting tone! thank you
Have a look at the Electro Harmonix Octave Multiplexer. you get really great subs and can add some fuzz on top of it. thats what I usually use for that song. OC2 is amazing though
Interesting definitely a sound I'd use in the future
do you have any video talking about , a career as musician and reach that?
scott how do you combine two signal? dont usually bass amp has one input?
Fantastic !! :D i needed this help thanks
Quick question tho would i be able to use 'Ebs octabass' and a distortion to get that (maroon5 - moves like jagger) sound and that club bass sound, or would i have to use a boss octave pedal and distortion instead?
whats the difference between 'Ebs octabass' and 'Boss octave'?
would you highly recommend that markbass compressore pedal?
Brilliant vid...cheers!
Scott if you want to get rid of that mark bass pedal I want it. I can't afford to pay a ridiculous price but I am interested in it.
