Awesome stuff, been driving 28 years and always had manual cars. I’m Picking up my first BMW Automatic tomorrow and was panicking a bit, I feel a bit better now after watching this 😀
When you move the transmission to the left into S/M it is still automatic, but with gear switches that happen in a higher (sportier) rev range. On your dash you will see it changing from D to S1, S2, etc depending on what gear the transmission is in. Then when you start using the paddles, it will switch to manual, with gears denoted by M1, M2, etc.
Yes it is exactly as you describe it. The sportier engine revs are first noticed as the car changes down a gear often but remains an automatic until you use the paddles.
Hello, I know your videos are-year-old but I’m looking at one to buy. I never had a clue how these things work till the weather BMWs, but I haven’t had one like this. Thank you very much indeed for explaining in such a comprehensive way how they stand ColorWorks, I’m told never to buy one because there’s nothing but trouble, but I just like him and thank you again Eddie.😮
Good question, the car will change gear to avoid stalling when slowing down and it will avoid over revving when speeding up. The computer will always have the final decision on a gear change.
Good question, the cars throttle position is adjusted by the cars computer so there is no need for you to release the accelerator. The gear shifts up or down are reasonably smooth without you needing to adjust the pedal position.
I use amzn.to/3X5AV7E and a normal screen mounting phone holder. I have put go pro mounts onto these also. Nothing special needed to get started. If you are in the North Kent area of the UK then stop by for a chat sometime.
You can just use the paddles when in auto which puts you in manual for a short time. To go into the full sports manual you do have to move the selector stick.
Might be an obvious answer, but how well to the paddles work when you need to downshift while turning ? Would you just switch back to automatic if the situation requires?
Everything is electronic on this car but thankfully put together by Germans. No problems so far but I also have a 1935 Austin and love the simplicity of it.
Great video, thank you. I'm buying a G20 3 series soon. I live in the country and drive on roads like this very often - I will probably be driving in manual mode all of the time. Do you need to put it in park when stationary in steady moving traffic?
Awesome car, you will enjoy using the manual mode on those roads. I have grown lazy and just let the car do it most of the time now but maybe that’s typical for a 5 series old man owner. I don’t use Park in slow traffic. I use the electronic handbrake and leave it in D. You could also use Auto Hold as shown in this video th-cam.com/video/6XHfLD-ZKzk/w-d-xo.html which my wife prefers. Either way makes use of the Stop/Start but I switch that off if I’m only stopping for a couple of seconds.
@@ChimpOnCars Great, thank you for the reply. Driving a brand new automatic car will be completely new to me so I'm a bit nervous to be honest, but at least I won't stall it!
Definitely won’t stall it! Most people can adjust easily but you will find yourself going for the clutch occasionally. Enjoy it, it’s a great drivers car.
I chose the 5 series because of the driving feel and front end handling. The A6 is probably the better all round car if the interior and styling are taken into account but not much between them. Go for whichever gives the best deal maybe?
Good point, I did until I became an instructor. It’s part of the training to use different words for things and situations and that was one of them. Try saying accelerator in a first driving lesson when you are guiding a bit more, a bit less, foot off, etc.

Thank you, I hope you are enjoying the car!
Haha i atm am at same position have only driven manual bit panicing for a automatic how did it go for you ?
Same thing with me is happening tomorrow :D Swapping a manual BMW after 10 years for a newer one in auto.
@@rosentonov8183 just seen your reply, I’m loving it . I should have got a automatic years ago 😂
Literally about to do this 😂😂😂
Love this video. Picking up my bmw M135i automatic tomorrow & I’ve never driven one before. Your video has now calmed me down. Thanks.
Awesome, enjoy the new car!

I like how calm you sound. Your accent too. Almost like you work for BMW.
Thank you, I don’t work for them as I think I’ve been self employed for so many years that I’m now unemployable.
Great video, really helpful. Thank you 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative. Thanks. 👍
Thank you 🙏

This one has been with me for almost 2 years. Good comfortable motoring. Just released a video about the sport modes.
Thanks for this comprehensive demo, looking to get a semi auto but wasn't so sure how it would drive
Excellent, good luck
What a brilliant and informative video
Thank you 🙏
Very Educative
Thank you!🙏
In flappy paddle mode will the car automatically gear down on its own accord when slowing down?? Or does the driver need to down shift
Good question, the car will change gear to avoid stalling when slowing down and it will avoid over revving when speeding up. The computer will always have the final decision on a gear change.
Should I release the accelerator pedal when I shift gears or not.. Will it cause any damage if I do not release the accelerator..
Good question, the cars throttle position is adjusted by the cars computer so there is no need for you to release the accelerator. The gear shifts up or down are reasonably smooth without you needing to adjust the pedal position.
Great video bro!
Many thanks 🙏
Thanks for this video never driven an automatic before and this will hopefully prepare for test driving a 2 series with this transmission.
Excellent, good luck
What phone/camera mount do you use? Would love to make some content with my 320i and that’s a great angle

Great Post 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Can you have individual mode where you keep sport dials but comfort driving?
Good question, you can personalise the sport mode and choose some comfort settings.
Is there an easy way to go from sports manual back to sports automatic other than flicking the selector over to the right and back over to the left?
hold + lever. or + --> - lever
You can just use the paddles when in auto which puts you in manual for a short time. To go into the full sports manual you do have to move the selector stick.

You can easily switch back to auto but the paddles work whilst turning too. They are long so easy to find and move with the steering wheel.
Is Steptronic electronically controlled? I’ve heard bad things about electronic clutches.

do you recommend a bmw? are they good reliable cars.
Definitely, mine is working very well for me

We call it accelerator pedal in UK
