Good question, I can’t give you an answer on your specific problem. It’s a simple system working with the electronic handbrake. Most of the working parts to this are just the normal braking system which is mechanical. Definitely get yours looked at as clunking brakes could be a serious issue!
Mercedes is so much better, you just have to double press the break pedal to engage this. Had it on my old Mercedes. Now I'm in a bmw this seems quite outdated for a 100k+ car
