Paul Kelly doesn’t sound or play much like Bob Dylan, but he holds a similar cultural status: the peoples’ poet laureate, writing songs that define the times, shape our lives and live forever in our hearts!
Heaps people all over ( not just here ) discovering and loveing real artists with real good messages. Kids in us singing stuff like John Denver,Marty Robbin’s etc. love watching thier reactions to genuine humanity .screw all all this filth and fury and demonic rot .every gen rebels against system .i now have hope for people who are fed up with crap getting push today. Kate bush getting a whole new fan base as is pink Floyd etc .lets go grass root giants.
His How to Make Gravy, especially performed by Pub Choir across Australia, is my favourite of his songs! He definitely created a strong social commentary, without an ego! 🙋
G'day Mike. You're building up a few "favourites" with Barnsey, Farnsey, John Williamson, Slim...now, and Paul Kelly. We're gonna have to buy you an Akubra hat soon to complete the picture...a nice white one (or maybe a beat up dusty red drover's hat?).
I can relate to this song ;) .. Mike, I don't know if you noticed the two back up singers but they are absolute legends in their own right. Vicka and linda Bull. Tongan heritage and been in the Au music scene for as long as I can remember.
If you've not realised already, Paul Kelly is one of the world's greatest poets. His story telling in song is almost peerless. Absolute Aussie legend. Also interesting side note, Kelly's band are locally famous as the house band on a weekly celebrity music quiz show called "RokWiz". Each show closed with various live acts performing their own material or some sort of cover. Well worth a TH-cam for some random music trivia and fun times 😎
Paul Kelly expresses the things we all think, do and say with brilliant story telling lyrics and catchy melodies. He is, as many have said in the comments, our poet laureate. The stories he tells resonate with so many Aussies, that's why we love him so much. He's an icon!
Every one on that stage is a career musician who has tested their mettle many times over, and it feels like you're just watching them jam and have a great time. So good!
PK is an absolute legend and loved here . This is one of many great songs he had/has . His band are top notch are all are his regulars that have stuck with him. Still going strong to this day . We are all guilty of doing some dumb things along the way , so this song resonates with us all I’m sure . I’m glad I’m surprising you Mike 😂 . I’ve got a few more surprises up my sleeve for you to come 😂 Cheers mate 👍
Such a great track, clever lyrics, although hard to catch all that in this live version, and it's just a good time. Love Paul Kelly, love your reactions, win/win! ✌❤
Good to hear you're in a good mood... Glad you understand that we don't like people getting things twisted between Kelly and Dylan.. our people are their own folk in their own right
Live in Tasmania (Where The Falls Festival was...now defunct the festival not the State of Tasmania). Little Tasmania. Love Paul Kelly. Love your reactions. Great to see/ hear you gaining confidence. Keep going please! You and Paul both!
Hello again, I have had the pleasure of opening for Paul Kelly a few times many years ago in Melbourne. A nice guy and always a pleasure. I enjoy your reactions, cheers, Steve.
What a fantastic live performance, beautifully mixed too. And we see familiar faces in the band, including the back up singers, these are seasoned musicians. They've made the odd appearance in the Gershwin Room too, I was there the other month on my lonesome.
The annual Falls Festival is no more. It has just been cancelled due to massive overheads that. like other festivals, have proved too costly, plus other reasons, to run. Co-Vid long lockdowns didn't help. Others have mentioned Vika and Linda Bull here who worked with Joe Callimeri. Also, Jacky Barnes, son of Jimmy Barnes, is on the drums.
Hey Mike how about a close-up look at your badge? Many years ago when I was still in the Job I collected badges and patches and even though I don't collect now I still have an interest in them
It's simple really, Paul writes HONESTLY about true life. I ignored him for 20 years because i don't like his voice.....but in the end, his songs are too good to ignore. A lot like Dylan. lol

Good one Way, excellent choice. Linda & Vika backing vocals are the same girls from the Black Sorrows
Paul Kelly is a great story teller, song writer, he is also a very genuine Guy!

Paul Kelly is the latest in a series of great Australian story teller musicians, as Bob Dylan is for the US.
It's his honestly through art of his soul..it's not for words of us imho. Ty
