    One thing I meant to put in the video, but forgot to include is how to lookup a laptop's TDP if you have the laptop in hand. The way I test this is I use MSI Afterburner/HWInfo64 (free downloads) and then stress test the laptop or play games. I monitor the CPU/GPU power usage in HWInfo and/or in the overlay of application. You can see me setup this whole process in my live benchmarking videos if you want to follow it step by step here (time stamped): th-cam.com/video/4Sai-reyzGU/w-d-xo.html
    To use the MUX switch on GS66, in the Dragon Center, you have a drop down to switch between Optimus (Hybrid Mode) and Discrete (Nvidia GPU only) modes. Requires restart of the laptop.

    I just started looking at 30x0 laptops as it seems like the only way I will see a much needed upgrade this year, clicked on this video first on the list not expecting much (not my first time doing gaming laptops). Was really impressed by what you covered and that you had really done bang up reviews on many laptops already, I'll def be hitting up your other laptop videos. You did a pretty adequate job of describing optmius and max-q without getting long winded.
    I have also noticed the vast number of displays in this years laptops. At first I was pretty impressed by how affordable many 3060 and 3070 laptops were, then I saw they all had screens with %65 srgb. That is amazingly bad. And everyone was doing it, asus, msi, the number of SKUs are getting obscene.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jeff! Yeah, few lower midrange budget laptops (under $1200) that have good displays are the Gigabyte G5, HP Omen 15z, and the Legion 5 from what I've seen since they have no ghosting, good response time, and decent color gamut.

    Thanks for the spreadsheet! You've really helped narrow down my choices! Speaking of which, it seems this laptop was built specifically for people like me. I only ever game with my laptop at home connected to a Display Port monitor and the times that I do take it out will mostly be for casual use (web browsing/documents/media consumption). So for me at least, it'll be the best of both worlds since I'll have full performance at home and great battery life when I'm outside!

It was a tough call with so many good gaming laptops now, but I need portability and a webcam, so I went with the Asus ROG 13X Flow. I could've gotten something a bit bigger and heavier, with a better GPU, but I'm going to be on the road and lugging this with me everywhere, so 13X Flow. The Razer 14 almost made it, but after seeing the reviews of the thermals and how you can cook an egg on it, LOL.

    First of all, thank you for all the benchmarks and for the list that helped me purchase my Scar Strix 15 G533QS.
    1) Referring to MuX switch: I had used and still use my Legion Y740 (2070 MaxQ) who has a mux switch. Sincerely is a hassle and I hated it. It grounds your laptop to a desk. The battery life is horrible with dedicated gpu and you would not want to reboot every time to bios to switch the mux. I mainly game on the desk so I just leave it on dedicated gpu and used an other laptop for battery, just to not boot into bios. If you are grounded to a desk, then why not use an external display and go for optimus with bigger TDP?
    2) Now referring to TDP, an 115W gpu with optimus will be better than 90W mux one. The performance penalty comes only on very high FPS (200+), and then still you have at least 25W to up to 40W of extra power. It does not matter, because on those FPS you won’t have any lag/latency.
    The difference in size/weight between my Legion MaxQ and Asus MaxP is the same.
    Nice MSI marketing efforts 🙂
    I recommend you get a laptop with higher TDP, even tho I doesn’t have MUX. You will have a better experience overall and a good battery life.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you aren't an gamer that plays CPU bound games at 1080P often--so yes, skipping the MUX isn't a big deal, especially if you buy QHD (like I mention in the video). I agree a MUX switch can be a hassle to restart and use, but the performance gains are undeniable in certain games.
      Regarding the GS66 vs Strix G17 difference, it makes a big impact, even in games that hit less than 200 FPS. Look at COD: Warzone in the video. The GS66 is still outperforming the G17 because of the MUX. It just varies a lot from game to game as I mention in the video.
      I am definitely not a MSI marketing shill. It sounds like you are really liking the Scar 15. It should be a great laptop!! I should have one coming in today. But just recognize that there are different strokes for different folks, and it's okay for a laptop to be better for one person vs another for different reasons, like what games they enjoy playing and how much they are willing to pay.

    21st century and we facing problems from 80s 90s back era. LCD Active and Passive models. That's cruel cause many of the manufacturers says that their products are "gaming laptops" ... You buy one, then realize that despite of 144Hz RR You get ... 25-30ms responsive time of the panel B/W W/G which is ... dissapointing :/ It's not fair, ghosting is something that shouldn't appear anymore in 21st century ... Great video, You've earned a SUB! There's very less info on things You've just touched in gaming laptops matter.

    What about getting a laptop with RTX 3080 instead of 3070? Is the performance difference going to be worth the extra spent money?

    Good advice. I'm seeing a 12% difference from the mux switch at 4k. Higher at 1080p.

      Mux switches sometimes matter and sometimes it doesn't. I have seen huge claims when I get numbers that are exactly the same and have even got lower numbers with the mux switch.

    Im in the Max Q department, I wanted the most power I could get in the most sleekest, unassuming, and lightest laptop I could find. Enter the GS66, it was a perfect find! I just ordered my GS66 (same specs as vid) on Friday and im beyond pumped to get it! I haven't upgraded since 2012 with my Lenovo G780 with intel Pentium! That im still currently using and typing out this comment on, Im going to go from a station wagon to a rocket ship in about a week!

    Dude in the Rog strix series, is the 3070 that much better than the 3060? I can get a 3060 right now and asus says they might be able to get me a 3070 one in about 2-3 months, what do you recommend? Should I wait it out for the 3070 or go for the 3060,i just wanna enjoy games like horizon:zero dawn or cyberpunk at a decent high settings (preferably with medium ray tracing) but want atleast a solid 60fps, I don't really care much for the mux switch thing since I'll be more focused on graphic intense games.

    Mux Switch is only really relevant for ultra high frames rates, thus competitive gaming in my opinion.

      That might be the reason why most gamer laptop even higher tier ones don't have Mux switch cause they are just not for laptops probably cause literally every competitive e sport player plays on PC

    This is me. I've being running around the net, online stores recommendations fur a top of the range laptop but the options are so confusing. Putting aside all these technical confusing terms, as I'm not that tech savvy, but I want the most powerful, fastest gaming laptop, best 17 inch, non glare, high resolution display and best audio ever I can get, I 'm assuming that it might be a bit weighty, but which I can still drag around with me sometimes. I want a laptop that whatever you throw at it will be a breeze for the machine to handle, games, that can also double down maybe, for example, doing heavy duty crypto mining, etc. Money not an issue. What do you clever tech savvy laptop enthusiasts recommend as value for money regarding a high spec'd, top of the range blow away everything else laptop, a configuration that will stretch its lifespan as long as possible considering how technology is making everything obsolete every few months. Thanks. Anybody?

    Don't e-sports games run better on intel chips? I wonder if the mux switch or the intel chip is playing the bigger role in giving the MSI laptop the performance edge over the G17 with e-sports titles?

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Strix outperforms the GS66 when Optimus is bypassed, so no, the Ryzen chips are better when optimus isn’t slowing things down

Too soon to pre-order something?!?! Should I wait for more reviews?!?! Would love to get your opinion. Thanks 🙏🏼

    Very useful and thorough review, thanks a lot!
    Really looking forward to understand if Asus Zephyrus DUO 15, Ryzen 9 5900HX (50-90W), RTX 3080 Max-P (115-130W), 32 GB Ram, 2 TB SSD, 4K 120hz has Optimus / MUX display.
    Considering the other units in the Asus lineup, I am prepared to see Duo has Optimus display as well, but - should it be the case - I want to further understand the impact in terms of performance loss, considering the price point.
    Cheers !

    Just got my Asus Strix G17 yesterday with the 5900hx/3070 and I'm very satisfied with the performance. Overall Nvidia Optimus does not bother me as much as I game casually and more towards GPU bound games, though I do play some CSGO with 150-200fps which is more than enough for an extensively smooth casual experience. Definitely Team TDP > Team Mux (jk lol). Thanks to you and your videos for helping me decide to go with the Asus!

    Hi, thanks for the spreadsheet and reviews! They've helped me a lot. I have a question regarding the Asus ROG Strix G15 screen options. Your sheet and the listings available online only mention the FHD 300Hz option, but the Asus site lists a QHD 165Hz variant also. Is that expected to arrive later? I don't play e-sports, so I would prefer to wait if it is gonna be available eventually.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe that will be available later on in the year. I think the number of QHD displays available made it so that they could only offer it on some models at launch.

    Hi, does alienware m17 r3 or r4 comes with a mux switch? Also, in the excel sheet, you mentioned the 144hz panel is 100% sRGB but as per dell website, the non gsync 300hz panel only have the 100% sRGB which is free for R3 but costs around 165 dollar in Australia to customize. Will 100% sRGB display give better and more accurate color?
