Super Metroid Quick Clip - Killing Crocomire’s Tongue

- In this quick video, I demonstrate how Crocomire’s tongue can be “killed” via the use of an obscene number of Power Bombs. For whatever reason, Crocomire’s tongue is considered a separate enemy in Super Metroid’s programming, and it has a ridiculous amount of health: 32,767 to be exact (7FFF in hexadecimal). For reference, that’s about 82% more HP than Ridley has. And, the tongue can only be damaged by Power Bombs.
Power Bombs deal 200 damage per hit (to most enemies, including Crocomire’s tongue). However, they frequently hit twice, resulting in 400 damage. Thus, to kill Crocomire’s tongue, you’ll need to use at least 82 Power Bombs. You can use glitches (Spacetime Beam, God Block) or cheats to acquire all those Power Bombs beforehand, or you can be (very) patient and collect more Power Bombs during the fight from Crocomire’s projectiles.
When Samus enters Crocomire’s room, his tongue is loaded as “Enemy #2.” Thus, the tongue’s current HP can be found at these memory addresses - 7E:0FCC - 7E:0FCD.
Interestingly, Power Bombs “enrage” Crocomire, kind of like how Super Missiles “enrage” Phantoon. I guess that’s because they hurt his poor tongue. ;)
There is actually a speedrunning category devoted to this, called “Kill Croc’s Tongue RTA.” As of the publishing of this video, the current world record (allowing the use of major glitches) is 26:00 by ptoil ( • [WR] Super Metroid Kil... ). The current world record without major glitches is 1:03:58 by idlechild ( • Kill Croc's Tongue RTA... ).
Thanks for watching, everyone! :)
I always feel sorry for Crocomire. Dude is just minding his own business down there and Samus comes out of nowhere and starts blasting him into an acid pit, which results in the most gruesome death in the game.
And now people are blowing his tongue up before shoving him in …
Sick stuff.
Hahaha, I totally agree... I honestly really like Crocomire, even though this video implies the opposite. 😂
people are quick to give crocomire a pass but this thing is basically waiting in ambush to push its prey into a wall of spikes
@@BradTheDead
He doesn’t aggro until you hit him, though
LoooooooL WTF
@@BradTheDead - Poor Croc just wants a hug! So lonely down there...
More than anything else, I appreciate that you did not waste our time watching you chew through 82 power bombs. All killer, No filler.
No one deserves to watch that. 😂 Thanks so much, TheZetakai! :)
"all killer no filler" is a term I haven't heard in a LONGGG time.
Did you happen to watch Dragon Ball Z "fight" videos as a kid? ;)
I have never knew about this wow. 30 years later is this an actual new discovery? Amazing find!
Nope, not a new discovery at all, haha. It's just funny to me, and I thought my viewers that haven't heard of this yet might enjoy it as well. :) But thank you so much for watching and commenting, Mety333! :)
Sup mety.
@@tritone2276 for some reason Google gave me the option to translate your comment. It said "suitable soup"...LOL
Its like a damageless run from Ninja Gaiden
It took more than 2 decades to pull this off.
@@jss636 Nice.
I’ve played through Super Metroid at least 100 times and watched countless speed-runs and yet you still show me things I have never seen before. Love your dedication to this game.
Thanks so much, Michael! I really appreciate it. :) One thing I've learned is that there is ALWAYS more to learn about this game. :)
WHAT
Exactly.
I thought I knew everything about this game.
It feels so good to be proven wrong.
Sometimes the slowest way is the best way. Reminds me of the killer with inefficient weapon (spoon)
So that’s why Croc was stuck in that one hallway! Besides the lava below him, he’s basically invincible. Mother Brain just couldn’t handle such an intimidating creature!
Why didn't Mother brain just build her glass head case out of him?
Seems like a terrible place to put him. Mother Brain should have had him guard an lava-free passage that leads to an upgrade Samus needs.
@@foxymetroid I don't think all the creatures of Zebes are Mother Brain's minions. Zebes was a co-opted planet, infested by an alien invasion. Crocomire was possibly a native denizen, and more likely imprisoned down there. Judging by the placement of the beam hooks on the ceiling, and the roof based entrance to the room, which is literally a pit surrounded by an acid moat. He was probably tricked down there, and then sealed off from escape.
The fact that you can kill Croc's tongue is one of my favourite pieces of useless SM trivia. People have even made a speedrun category out of it, although I think there are only about 5 submitted runs.
Edit: Duh, the description says as much!
Right? I love it. 😂 And yup, the "Kill Croc's Tongue RTA" category has been divided into 2 categories, one allowing major glitches (Spacetime Beam, God Block, etc) and the other not. The links to both current world records are in my video description, as you've realized. :) Thanks for watching and commenting, SirBlackMage!
Imagine saying to a non gamer “I hold the record in Super Metroid for killing Crocmire’s tongue”
Ah yes, the "Epic Glottis" run :P
Poor ol’ Crocomire. I’ll NEVER get tired of the awesome way he dies though. >_> One of the most brutal deaths in SNES. Had no idea his tongue could be defeated lol, that’s so weird.
The craziest part of his death sequence to me is that Bowser more or less does the same thing in a mainline Mario game.
So crocomire’s tongue is the most powerful thing in the game
Well... Mother Brain's 3rd form has 36,000 HP, and certain enemies such as the Mama Turtle in Maridia (AKA Kame or Tatori) and her babies are completely invulnerable to everything. So, not quite, but close. ;)
That's what she said
😏
@@GoldenChorizoCode I thought that was suppose to be Bowser
@@GoldenChorizoCode the turtlrs were stuck in that cave because mother brain was afraid
Ill keep that in mind if i need some extra missiles during the boss
Always good to have some tricks up your sleeve... Croc is a pretty tough fight. ;)
He looks very strange without his tongue.
The reason for it to be as separate object might be the animation it has and it was easy to do it that way. 0x7FFF is the highest signed 16-bit integer (if I'm not wrong), so I guess that's a dummy value for "almost indestructible". It's clearly not intended to be killed. It could be programmed to not take damage at all, but again, it possibly was the easiest solution and it's good enough to be fair.
He really does lol. That's a great point about the animation! And yup, I'm sure you're correct about 7FFF being the default "nearly indestructible" value, since it is the highest signed 16-bit value. That's also the value the game assigns to Crocomire's "HP", even though you can't damage him in the traditional sense.
His tongue definitely wasn't intended to be killed by Samus... Neither was the Baby/Super Metroid, but you can also kill it using Power Bombs. ;) I think you're spot-on. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! :)
I guess the programmers figured, since it takes a whole lot of hits to destroy the tongue, and it's not likely that the player would spend that much time fighting Crocomire using power bombs, it wouldn't have mattered to the programmers to make the tongue invincible.
@@GoldenChorizoCode is there any video of the Super Metroid being killed? Wouldn't the cutscene end before you could kill it?
@@DandyDNA I made a video demonstrating it on console: th-cam.com/video/J-akUauQyV4/w-d-xo.html. :)
Very interesting. It would make sense for them to do that the save as much space as possible, not to mention to make a very easy size hitbox
Legends say that the EMMI's armor is made of Crocomire's tongue
I always feel bad for crocomire when he burns in the acid
I know... I love Crocomire.
I love how I keep learning about Super Metroid more than 4 years after first playing it! No wonder its one of my favorite games of all time
It's a legendary game, IMO. :)
"pop" - Crocomire's tongue, 2021
RIP.
If you power bomb Crocomire's tongue, it doesn't prove you're the best speedrunner, it only proves you're afraid of what he has to roar.
Oh wow, that's really bizarre. Maybe it was just more convenient for the devs to program it that way (and then they slapped it with prohibitively high health so it would never "die" in normal circumstances). Fascinating.
It's definitely bizarre... But that would be my guess as well. Feel free to comment, Deer Force. ;) Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Brad!
This channel is becoming the Limit Breakers of SM. Compiling and presenting all the useless data for the world to enjoy.
This is really cool. Also, I'm totally using moonwalk like that next time I fight Crocomire
the inevitability to talk about obscure category seems to be more near than we think eh. kill crocomire RTA is a very interesting run, one i'm not interested to do without the use of GT code + ST beam for sure
Haha! Hey, FLJ. :) I made this video for those casual SM players/fans out there who haven't seen this and might find it comical. When it comes to obscure categories... we all have our opinions, and I'm guessing we're on the same page. ;)
I found you in the wild!
Crocomire lost the taste of a prolonged defeat.
Was I the only one who mentally read those *"41 Power Bombs Later..."* banners with that SpongeBob narrator's voice?
Ah yes, Crocomire. The equivalent of Satan in the Metroid universe
Question: can you still 'enrage' him once his tongue is dead? (As in, is the tongue's purpose maybe to detect power bombs, to trigger the enraged state?)
“Samus, I can’t taste anything”
“ ‘Rona virus, Crocomire!”
“Wha-?”
“SOCIAL DISTANCING GET IN THE HOT TUB!!!”
I guess you could say he's tasteless
Croc is immortal but as soon as he goes to lava his reaction is, eww red water
I am watching and playing Super Metroid for 4 years (before in my childhood) and i am again and again stunned how much hidden content this Game has. The programmers are brilliant (okay, some things they didnt planed ^^ ) not so hasting to create this Game as usually todays programmers has to (not they fault).
Thanks for keeping make this Videos and your detailed descriptions! ❤️
Wow i never knew about that. Cool stuff!
Damn, just imagine the amount of weed the first guy to think of doing this must've smoked.
And now I also realize Croc has no teef. He’s gums only.
Dude, you killed the guy’s tongue. Brutal.
He had it coming. ;)
Jk, I actually love Crocomire.
Omg this is the funniest thing I've ever seen. A million power bombs just to takeout a tounge. Guess Crocomire got nothing else to say now lol
Croc gets angry from the spicy meatballs
What’s the matter Crocomire? Samus got your tongue?
He looks happy to have lost his tongue
Haha, Crocomire always looks kinda happy... :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode Yes I'm noticing it more now I've focused on his face for extended time 😁
Perfection continues to impress.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Michael. :) Cheers!
Maybe the reason for the tongue taking damage is for the enrage against power bombs feature? And a programmer made the entity the tongue for kicks.
Really great content. Everytime I see one of your videos in my recommended, I know it’s going to be good. It’s also very cool to see that things like this are still being found in this game, even after all of this time. I wonder what will be found next?
He was still able to roar tho
The poor boy has suffered enough
So how exactly does Samus knock Crocomire backwards anyway? All this time i've actually just thought it was hitting his tongue.
Hitting anywhere in the inside of the mouth, I assume.
stuffing missiles into it’s mouth
Can't believe I didn't know this was possible after playing base super and ROM hacks more times than I've breathed. Also surprised I've found a bigger Metroid fan than myself lmao
Thats some dedication!
Worth it. 😌 Thanks for watching and commenting, Sas_aran! :)
Omg I can't believe what I just saw this is amazing
I watched another video involving Crocomire where the player used the Grapple Beam on him that somehow makes his graphics shift out of place, and his tongue is a lot longer than what we can see in the initial fight. Wonder why they shortened it.
Using the Grappling Beam on Croc is hilarious lol. And I'm not sure... 🤔 But thanks for watching and commenting, Kalaida. :)
Huh. Well how about that. Damn powerful tongue.
A legendary tongue, indeed. Thanks for watching and commenting, danmanx2! :)
This is really interesting
1:40 moonwalking samus
I wonder what the thoughts were of the developers while implementing this
"Hey lets make the tongue of croc destroyable by only using a ridiculous amount of power bombs. "
my assumption for crocs tongue being a separate entity would be cause of some color palette problems, although that wouldnt be very likely
still, only answer i can think of rn. specially since its like 3 am in the morning and i havent slept all night
:edab:
How does this prove Crocomire’s hp total? This fight is designed as a reverse tug of war. For all we know, he could have infinite hp until the acid bath
What? This is about the hp of his tongue, not crocomire himself
Did you just moonwalked Crocomire into the lava pit at the end?
Wait Crocomire shoots projectiles?! Been playing this since the day it came out and I never knew! Great video! 😂
Should exist some sort of reward for killing it that way. It is not coincidence.
what's the song during the 41 power bombs later bit? lol i recognise it
Im still baffled that people actually find things like this out...
Surprising info
Hey Mr. Chorizo, there is one thing you could try to science up:
Back in 97, during one of those crappy 10 hour runs with crappy %, I managed to, and very distinctly remember it happening, I managed to DESTROY RIDLEY'S TAIL.
It happened on the SNES, not Famicom, in case there's a technical difference.
Yeah, it took 82 power bombs to kill it, but it DID drop missiles so like, in the end worth right?
Oh, it's worth it even without the item drop. ;)
Could his tongue actually be a symbiotic parasite? Kinda creepy to think about.
We may never know....... 🤔
Sorry to be pedantic, but there's no such thing as a symbiotic parasite. Symbiosis requires the interaction benefit both organisms, whereas parasites by definition benefit only one organism (the parasite) to the detriment of the other (the host).
OMFG LOL. Moonwalking on crocomire AND super missiling his death bed. XD XD I CAN'T EVEN. XD XD
A tad excessive, perhaps... ;) Thanks for watching and commenting, Azure Hydra! :)
Wow, I thought doing the reset glitch and grapple beaming Crocomire to see his sprite freak out was crazy. Now I have another way to mess with him. I guess the tongue being a separate “enemy” from the rest of Crocomire’s body explains why his tongue disconnects when using the grapple beam on him.
Grappling Crocomire never gets old... 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting, GuineaPigDan! :)
Clearly that´s its weak spot
Yup, gottem.
Somehow this is both the most useless thing ever AND the most awesome thing ever. At the same time. Because Super Metroid is just that [BLEEP]ing badass.
Hahaha! I could not agree more with this comment. 😂
Wow xD that was awesome!
Thanks so much, AtKiba! :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode I love these kind of unseed details, I run My own experiments and in Metal gear solid also found these unused invisible objects that can be destroyed
That's interesting. Ridley seems to have some kind of heart or lung that opens and closes in his side when he's perched in the first encounter. I wonder if you can kill that too somehow.
Y'know, I'm starting to think that Crocomire is impossible to defeat without pushing him into the acid. 🤔
And the only way to break the spikes wall
Haha, I think you're on to something... ;) Thanks for watching and commenting, Noel! :)
In Metroid Confrontation this isn't the case, but it IS non canon.
I'm pretty sure that missile will save time in 100 percent 😂
Hahaha, might have to time it out to be sure. 😂 As always, thanks for watching and commenting, Ace Humpty! :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode and as always, thanks for sharing your knowledge ;)
reminds me of the snake heads from the final boss from Contra 3: the alien wars!
Haha, I can see that! :) Thanks for watching and commenting, neonmewtwo21!
Oh cool, gotta try that.
"41 PB later"
...guess not.
Just write to the game's memory to make his tongue's HP 0! Then ya only need 1 Power Bomb. ;)
Fantastic
this has to be the strangest thing ive seen left in a game that isnt an easter egg.
like there are too many questions:
why even have it this way?
was it a weird idea that got scrapped but the easiest solution at the time was to give it an absurd amount of HP?
even then, is the hurtbox for it not actually in the mouth since the pop for it was more to the back of Crocomire?
It's simpler than that. It's like this because crocomires tongue was easier to animate by making it a separate object from crocomire and just attaching it to him than trying to make it part of crocomires sprite would be. Then they gave it a shitload of hp so that no one will ever kill his tongue in a normal playthrough.
Crocomire can be killed without the lava?!
No, the lava/acid is required to kill Crocomire himself. But, his tongue is more vulnerable. :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode Poor dude now not only he is just bones but also tongueless.
DANG! What that tongue do though!?
So is the fact that he shoots fireballs afterwards just an easter egg from the devs, or proof of a redesign during development...or possibly the former because of the latter?
Oh, he shoots those fireballs before you kill his tongue as well. :) Just didn't show that in this video haha.
@@GoldenChorizoCode Oh yeah, I guess it's just been so long since anyone's actually seen them before killing him
I don’t get why Crocomire has such an issue with Orangina. Who is he, _Jake Peralta?_
Amazing! Lol. Who would have thought.
Is it possible to atack him with a shinespark?
You can “kill” his tongue, and there’s a speed running category for it? Just when you think you’ve heard and seen the weirdest stuff this game has to offer!
P.s Whilst we’re on the subject of our favourite meltable croc, it is possible to get behind him?
Right? 😂 The answer to your question is yes, and to demonstrate it, I'll refer you to Zoast: th-cam.com/video/rp8XPscu0wI/w-d-xo.html. :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode Crocomire killed himself! HAHA! x'D
Crocomire was a bitch until I beat him for the first time somehow and it then realized you were supposed to push him into the acid which made it super fucking easy since I just needed to spam missiles constantly.
I think you broke him
Can u have that many powerbombs?
The max is 50 in normal gameplay. :) You can either use glitches (Spacetime Beam, God Block, etc) or cheats to get enough Power Bombs before the fight, or you can be *very* patient and farm more Power Bombs from Crocomire's projectiles during the fight. :)
this is crazy.
What's crazier is that there's a "Kill Croc's Tongue" speedrunning category... 😂 As always, thank you for watching and commenting, Calvin. :)
How do you moonwalk?
does he need his tongue in order for him to be pushed backwards?
Hey, jaden da finger! Nope, he doesn't. After his tongue is dead, you can just shoot him in the mouth and he'll be pushed back like normal. :)
Samus got your tongue?
CROCOMIRE'S TOUNGE IS NOT ONLY A SEPARATE ENEMY, BUT HAS MORE HEALTH THAN RIDLEY?!?! That's the kind of thing Rockstar would do today! I need to know who put this in the game ASAP!
What the hell
IT COULD BE DONE??
Omg how were you walking backwards like that in super metroid 😂😂
There is an option in the start menu where you can select to have the (literally called) moonwalk option on or off.
What about grapple beam ?
What about it? ;) Jk, grappling Croc is fun as well. But in this video, Samus had a very specific mission.
Does the tongue _do_ anything? Fewer attacks without it, or something?
As far as I can tell, the tongue literally does nothing except exist as a separate enemy. 😂
It wiggles, that’s all that matters.
Never knew that
How did you get 99 super bombs?
And not enough super missiles?.... You used reset glitch or used a hack tool to get 99 and not 99+50?
I also noticed that you used missiles during the clip cut.....
Spacetime Beam. :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode I KNEW IT!!! This way you can use it on any version of Super Metroid.
NANI!?!? And hi
hi :)
Did I get the first comment I forgot
Ridley when he sees this: tell me why ain’t nothing but a heartache tell me why
Interesting piece of information, but I have a question. If the tongue counts as a separate entity with hp that can be destroyed, does that change the interaction with Croc?
Does the boss fight still have to continue as usual with pushing him into the lava, or does he just give up and "voluntarily walk himself" into the pit?
have you tried metroid dread?
Not yet! Soon, though... From what I've seen, it looks fantastic. What do you think about it?
Interesting
Wtf
Exactly. 😂
