In my opinion this is the best thrash album of all time for the easy and simple reason that it has everything, great riffs, harmony, lyrics, solos, speed, the entire structure of each song. It is not only about going as fast as possible but also having each of these components and it is the difference with the other bands, achieving each of these things. This album for me is number one, following Ride the Lightning and in third place is Megadeth with Rust in Peace, of course for me but everyone has their own taste and is respectable 🤘🏻✌🏻
@@abaddon1371 I think that we can all agree the bass _guitar_ is lacking, but it's pretty well known that James and Lars screwed Jason over by cranking the low end frequencies on their respective instruments as an excuse to leave Jason faint in the mix. As the kids say these days, they 'did him dirty'. Btw I recommend James Mason's 5 different AJFO mixes, each with the bass guitar at varying levels.
I love this reactions videos, because it's the closer i can get of that feeling of listening to this masterpiece of an album for the first time. Thanks
James recently said that Disposable Heroes was inspired by watching pro football with the announcer saying these players are disposable heroes on the grid iron. So in his words, James implies football and war have similarities.
As a long-time Metallica fan, my favourite album always seems to change. However, watching these two videos has pretty much cemented it as my number one. It’s truly their masterpiece.
You are bang on in that metal is about justified and directed anger, and attempting to get a sort of catharsis through the music. I’ve been to a lot of concerts, and the metal ones always have the nicest, friendliest people who immediately apologize for any accident. More typical rock concerts can vary, with some bands having truly horrible fans. I’ve never encountered anything but great fans at a metal show.
Doug, you REALLY need to do And Justice For All (the whole album) next - it's the natural progression of this, and was where their lyricism and complexity of songwriting reached it's height.
Thank you for taking the time to touch on the lyrics - one of my favourite things about Metallica is that you can go from headbanging to solemnly reflecting on the lyrics in the same song.
As somebody that was an early teen metalhead when this was released, I've just found your channel and been going down the rabbit 🕳️ of your metal listens and I enjoy them thoroughly. Something that has always stood out to me is that rhythm guitar sound...some of the best sounding metal guitar ever recorded.
As someone who was raised on classical music and for the past 30 years has been a die hard Metallica fan, I really appreciate your reactions. Great to explore the classical components of this music. Hopefully you will keep reviewing their albums. and hey,,, the "Black" album actually gets out of "E"! lol
Doug, you would love the feeling of playing Metallica on the guitar! Some of it is pretty basic, but it sounds hard at their tempo. Playing "Disposable Heroes" is so cathartic! All the downpicking releases so much aggression. It reminds me of the phone booth scene in "Dumb and Dumber" where the guy outside says something like, "I'm so angry I think I like it!"
Doug you are great. You interpret the spirit of Metal like few others. I congratulate you for spreading music in such an enjoyable and fun way. But above all with the heart.🤘
It doesn't get any better than this, and it will never ever get old! I'd love to hear more early Metallica on your channel, preferably Ride the Lightning. Thank you for everything you do Doug.
Kirk’s Solo on Damage Inc. is one of my favorite Metal Solos and I think it’s a perfect solo for a Thrash Metal song. And as a drummer i have spent many nights playing along to this album practicing . I feel like Master of Puppets album has a great variety of metal songs. Has Speedy 180bpm type songs, has some songs with elements of Prog like Battery has the acoustic guitar sounding intro, has some Heavy Metal style songs like The Thing that should not be. Orion I think is one of my favorite instrumentals and I would also say brings a bit of a Prog Metal Element to the record. Sanitarium is one of the songs that is slower tempo has more melodic feel and a song that when I want a slow metallica song Sanitairum is great to me. I think this album is a great example how to make a complete album where every song from Start to end has good writing, good musicianship, every body is on there game in there prime on this album I believe . I feel like the when I compare the Ride The Lighting album To Master of puppets . I feel like Ride has a Icey Stone Cold , Electrifiying feel. Master feels like the recordings are better overall sound quality than Ride. If Ride feels like Icey Rage then Master feels Like Firey Rage if that makes Sense
The intro to ‘damage inc’ that you said reminded you of Bach, was written and performed by Cliff Burton on bass. Yep. That was bass. He was just a beast
If I remember right, most of the solo's in Orion were performed by Cliff save for like one or two I think. Cliff was able to manipulate his bass sound in such a way that it sounds like a guitar, but it's actually Cliff's bass.
While Kirk does the majority of the soloing in Metallica, he doesn’t do all of it. Occasionally James is doing the solo. They’ve got different styles, and it is usually obvious when it is James. Just an FYI, as you don’t seem to be aware of this.
You're so fun Doug. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. If you ever make to ride the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, AZ, I'd like to buy your a beer or smoke you out. Thanks for making a good thing. Cliff Burton's classical music background shines. He was the George Harrison to Lars/James' John/Paul.
Loved this Ride….glad to see everyone enjoy your reaction! This album shaped my musical enthusiasm and love for METAL. Big THANKS TO YOU AND METALLICA for making this.
Watching you go through this album reminds me of when I went through it for the first time. Your comments on the thematic cohesion across all this album are so true, and part of the many reasons why this album is a masterpiece. In my opinion, the only other Metallica album that attempts to, and I think successfully, create this overall cohesive message is ...And Justice For All. I love Ride the Lightning and Kill Em All but I feel like at that time they were experimenting with their voice and story telling. Anyway, I'd love to hear/see you do another album listen of more of their old stuff irrespective of what you choose. Love your enthusiasm and musical insight your bring!

James grew up in an abusive Christian science household and watched his mother die of cancer without medical intervention. He has written lyrics over the years addressing his contempt and painful memories of his childhood. Leper Messiah.....
Wrong.. Leper Messiah was written when James and Cliff couldn't sleep one night and were up late watching TV and there was a televangelist infomercial preaching the word and asking for money ..that is the "Leper Messiah"
@@thrashmetal00 you are absolutely correct about that. I should have referenced the other songs dealing with religion and crazy beliefs (Dyer's Eve , The God that Failed) in my original post.
My God…I cannot explain how much I enjoyed that whole ride. You are very entertaining, my friend. It simply cannot be overstated…Master of Puppets is not just arguably Metallica’s (or all of metal’s) best album, it is literally 1 of the greatest albums, across all time periods and genres, EVER. Hard stop.
What a tragedy when they lost Cliff. It was the beginning of the end, for me. As you say, he was the glue that held them together, and he was a great composer. This album was their masterpiece. This album blew me away, as a teenager. I'd never heard anything like it. It marked me for life. So sad they couldn't create anything better after. They lost their soul. Jason tried his best to 'replace' Cliff, but they did't allow him to fully integrate into the band. And it showed. I saw them on the "And Justice..." tour. One of the best concerts ever, and a lot because of Jason. He's a beast, but they never really incorporated him into the band. After, it was too late.
I think what the lyrics to Damage Inc. means they have been through the drugs, been through family strife, been through mental institutions, been through war and now they becoming the damaging force, the victims incorporate together and go on the attack.

Thank you Doug for your wonderful listening party of Metallicas Master of puppets! Especially i like to thank you for last comment on Metalmusic. A lot of the Metalsongs is about how we treat each other and the anger about how bad we all at this. This is why I am a Metalfan since over 40 years! I love your show!
Keep on going!
Keep on rocking!!
Greetings from Germany!
Ralph
"RIDE THE LIGHTNING" ⚡ full album⚡ NEXT!!! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Damage Inc intro is based loosely around Come, sweet death. Apparently. One of Cliffs favourite Bach pieces.
Komm, süsser Tod
In my opinion this is the best thrash album of all time for the easy and simple reason that it has everything, great riffs, harmony, lyrics, solos, speed, the entire structure of each song. It is not only about going as fast as possible but also having each of these components and it is the difference with the other bands, achieving each of these things. This album for me is number one, following Ride the Lightning and in third place is Megadeth with Rust in Peace, of course for me but everyone has their own taste and is respectable 🤘🏻✌🏻
And Justice For All NEXT please!!!!!!!!
Otherwise known as the bass-less album. Lyric wise and energy wise it rocks, music intricacy wise, not so much imo.
Now, that's some heavy shit! 🤘
@@abaddon1371There's a lot of bass on 'Justice... It's just coming mostly from the kick drum and James' palm mute chugging
@@razeezar U can't be serious? That's some serious copium you are smelling there mate!
RUST IN PEACE NEXT!!!
Yes please.
Yes
HELL YES
He doesnt like mustaines voice 😭
Yessss we need this
I love this reactions videos, because it's the closer i can get of that feeling of listening to this masterpiece of an album for the first time. Thanks
James recently said that Disposable Heroes was inspired by watching pro football with the announcer saying these players are disposable heroes on the grid iron. So in his words, James implies football and war have similarities.
oh hey, cool seeing you here! love all the concert vids
Football is the sport of war...not for the violence, but that the goal is land acquisition. Go take that hill or go get that first down.
Another theory I've heard thrown around is that James was referencing the direction to (or rather, _not_ to) wipe.
Would be great to see you react to the entirety of ...And Justice For All :) Think you would have a blast with that one!
Really enjoyed these two videos!
Thanks for such an insightful review. I've heard the album hundreds of times but never thought about it on your level. Way to tie it all together.
James said Leper is about TV evangelist
There are comparisons to be drawn however
Maybe not in the way Doug perceived
I always thought of evangelicals too. But now I think of the orange buffoon too.😂
100%, the republicans and trump use religion to fool people into voting for them - ‘Corinthians Two’ anyone? 😂
It's clearly about the business of religion. And the pinnacle of that is TV evangelists, so it makes sense.
The real song titles:
1) Back to the Front!
2) Secret Bowie Tribute
3) Burton Baroque Waltz
4) Too hard for Lars to play live.
🤣
As somebody that was an early teen metalhead when this was released, I've just found your channel and been going down the rabbit 🕳️ of your metal listens and I enjoy them thoroughly. Something that has always stood out to me is that rhythm guitar sound...some of the best sounding metal guitar ever recorded.
As someone who was raised on classical music and for the past 30 years has been a die hard Metallica fan, I really appreciate your reactions. Great to explore the classical components of this music. Hopefully you will keep reviewing their albums. and hey,,, the "Black" album actually gets out of "E"! lol
amazing to see that even a classical musician can't help but headbang to metallica. master of puppets forever 🤘
Love your reactions. Its like listening to good music with a good friend!
love the devotion bro… got so intense you had to take your glasses off 😎🤘🔥
I THOUROUGHLY ENJOY your reaction; its like im listening to this for the first time… and time is fleeting
I feel like the when I compare the Ride The Lighting album
To Master of puppets . I feel like Ride has a Icey Stone Cold , Electrifiying feel.
Master feels like the recordings are better overall sound quality than Ride. If Ride feels like Icey Rage then Master feels
Like Firey Rage if that makes
Sense
Cliff said that the intro was based upon a piece by Bach
The intro to ‘damage inc’ that you said reminded you of Bach, was written and performed by Cliff Burton on bass. Yep. That was bass. He was just a beast
If I remember right, most of the solo's in Orion were performed by Cliff save for like one or two I think. Cliff was able to manipulate his bass sound in such a way that it sounds like a guitar, but it's actually Cliff's bass.
which song?
@@alejandrov.g.2417 Oh, Orion. Should probably change that lol.
Cliffs Bass solo in Orion is 30:15 in the reaction
While Kirk does the majority of the soloing in Metallica, he doesn’t do all of it. Occasionally James is doing the solo. They’ve got different styles, and it is usually obvious when it is James. Just an FYI, as you don’t seem to be aware of this.
The second solo in orion was james according to the liner notes.
Nice! Rust in Peace by Megadeth is another album that i remembered loving every song!
I grew up in the 80s with this line up. It would have been great to hear what this version could have grown into. Cliff is definitely missed and a huge influence on these guys. Thanks for sharing.
Delivered as he promised. 👌 Thanks once again mister. 🙏
In month I will fly to Madrid for their concert and it will be my third time to see Metallica live. I'm excited like it was my first time. 😁😁
Hope you will do more whole album reactions, happy for your attitude. 👍
Best Regards from Czech Republic 🇨🇿💪🇨🇿
Doug went from "I cannot stand the double kick" to "I like the double kick" in just a couple of years. Great achievement man!!
You're becoming a metalhead 😊 To many metalheads, me included, love classical music.
Also..the song about his mom and Christian science death is "The God That Failed"
@@thrashmetal00 you are absolutely correct about that. I should have referenced the other songs dealing with religion and crazy beliefs (Dyer's Eve , The God that Failed) in my original post.
@scottchrismon4492 np mate,
Yes, Hetfield is very underrated as a lyricist..
Hard stop.
10:00 ‘Holy Shit!’. We’ve all been there Doug 😂. Welcome to the family.
I got to see cliff in 1986. His arrangements are untouchable. He was the master of his milieu and there will never be another.
In Orion when you asked who was on that solo James or Kirk, it was Cliff on Bass.
Leper Messiah is on my Top 5 Metallica songs. Such an insultingly underrated song.
I think what the lyrics to Damage Inc. means they have been through the drugs, been through family strife, been through mental institutions, been through war and now they becoming the damaging force, the victims incorporate together and go on the attack.
Really love your headbanging in Disposable Heroes Doug! I can see you doing that at a gig :)
Disposable Heroes has such an epic guitar solo.
