Appreciate the insight on how the car feels. At this point, the big difference between people that review cars and people that know what they’re talking about is in the details on how a car feels. It’s so easy to be impressed by a car’s speed/acceleration, but it’s not that easy to talk about the subtleties that make a car great. Great job, Zack!
I love how, at the end, both Dai and Zack were still just kind of awe struck that all they could think of was to thank one another for the experience. THAT is how you know it is a great car.
I remember when this launched nobody really understood it but in more recent years opinions have changed and it has been on the top of many people's lists. It was ahead of its time. I never knew that it was already planned before the 650S launched, it all makes sense now!
I like sports car in general. The McLaren cars never called my attention till this video. If a car can be a sports car and civil at the same time. That's something I would enjoy living with. I wonder what else is like this?
Really a great 720S review.... But especially liked it when I realized, "Hey, I know that road!" and later "Hey, I know that track!" You forgot to mention how the power didn't miss a beat, even at 10,000'!
@@samandrew5643 what problems - all the reliability bull from haters comes down to bits of trim coming loose or minor electrical glitches. 99.9% of problems are solved by switching it off and on again. Way better reliability than ferrari or maserati
This was an excellent review. Concise and enjoyable and i agree with most of these points as i just bought a blue 720s spider with that electrochromic roof. I dont see stock what can top this car short of going way higher up the cost ladder!
I can only imagine what's it's like to have the ability to plunk down $300k or more on a supercar! But, if I were in that position, along with all the most up to date mechanical abilities, I'd want the most up to date electronics to go with it. If the appearance of the 720S is your dream car, this one seemingly has everything you'd want, but why scrimp on the infotainment system? They are using MB engines as of 2021, why not use their electronics too? The cost per car can't be more than a few grand, and it seems a car of this caliber should have the best of all worlds. 👍✌ P.S. Great vlog, and finances permitting, I would likely still buy one of these just for the pure performance this car offers, and McClaren knows it, but still want to cheat me of current electronics tech! 👎🤷♂️😎
Love the video. Phat machine, the 720 is. Hmm negatives. . . potential reliability and maintenance costs? And would you prefer this or a GT3 and the residual cash for five star accommodations on a perpetual road trip?
Electrochromic roof! I remember hearing about that on a concept car around 2000. I was wondering if it would ever make it into a real car for sale. ...Though for $10,000 I suppose I can live without it.
I live out here in Palm Springs and do a lot of traveling. The one thing I’ve noticed is the douchebag to normal guy ratio of McLaren owners. From Phoenix to Denver to San Antonio…it’s all of the same. Mother than that the cars are nice. Nothing I’m interested in but definitely a something to appreciate.
Not at the current prices but if you can wait another year or 2 this will be a bargain again just like during early 2020 during the pandemic, when they were giving them away practically lol you can get a better PERFORMANCE supercar for the money, however, it does come with a lot of problems, and expensive maintenance so be ware!
Actually, saying how much a car weighs without its fluids, is more like saying how much you weigh without your bodily fluids. Not how much you weigh without your head!
Actually the suspension system is a bastardized version of the active suspension that was being investigated many years back before GM squashed the research to keep the supply chain going for aftermarket repair parts(read greed).Electrics will eventually make this car look old and slow one day.I would rank it at 37.
It's pretty hard to do that nowadays. Safety standards are constantly evolving, and new technologies add weight. Airbags, backup cameras, blind spot sensors, parking sensors (which you can see on the front end of this car) none of those comes without added weight. I mean this thing is mostly carbon fiber and it's still 1.5 tons. Think how heavy it'd be if it were made of steel or aluminum. There's a lower weight limit that just isn't breakable unless the car is track only (ie not road legal) and thus immune to crash standards. Ariel Atom, basically in a class by itself. Throw in the Lotus/Caterham 7 if you like.
@@mattevans4377 It doesn't matter if you call it a tech problem or a safety problem, it amounts to the same thing. Crash safety tests have become more stringent, which means more and more reinforced monocoques, which means more structural mass (or more exotic and expensive materials to offset the potential mass increase). This is not a design choice, but a regulatory necessity. Similar regulatory evolution is why the side walls of cars have grown while windows (particularly side windows) have shrunk. Visibility isn't really a measurable statistic (or at least, it isn't a statistic that the NTSB cares about), but crash dummies flailing about and ending up hanging out of the car is certainly measurable.
@@redlion145 Agree. And cars are considerably more survivable to severe crashes then they were in the 2000s... I'd take a modern car over an older one any day.

McLaren suffers from quality control and their dealer network is really weak. I wouldn’t own one unless I had full coverage warranty and lived near a dealer or very good aftermarket service center.
I long for the day when automotive journalists (all of them it seems) stop destroying very expensive tires so they can drift cars ! The novelty and cool factor have passed.
