Army Combat Veteran Punished After Reporting Hazing

  • This week’s Urban Valor episode features Army veteran Luke Simianer. Luke was born in Nebraska, then moved to Virginia, and grew up in Section 8 housing.
The 9/11 attacks inspired him to enlist in the Army. Luke was only 17 when he went through Army Airborne school. He did a combat deployment to Afghanistan, where he had quite the experience with snipers, hard drives, and donkeys, to say the least.
Luke was reprimanded by his command after making an anonymous video about being hazed. After working several blue-collar jobs upon transitioning, Luke founded “Clusiv,” the world’s first e-learning platform for the blind.

Good for you brother. I am a Marine… and now a trauma psychotherapist. I treat veterans almost exclusively. I have treated vets with such intense trauma due to hazing. Combat is one thing. And this is another thing with elements that can be more damaging. The people you are supposed to trust with everything, with your life, are hurting you. That is a serious mind fuck.
So glad you came out the other side of it. More power to you. You are strong and you are with it. Whole perfect and complete. I hope for the best for you.

An 18 year old soldier I knew in the late 80s was on army exercise. He was small and continually teased by the much older men in his platoon.
On one occasion he was stripped and held over a barrel while other members of the group approached him with erections. He believed he was going to be pack ra’ed. He fought and screamed while they laughed. To them it was a joke. To him, he felt that had they been serious he had absolutely no way of protecting himself. He suffered jibes over this incident for months.
It really messed him up. This young man didn’t need to go to war to end up with PTSD.

I worked for a local government agency that serves vets and compromised of vets. The director, retired colonel, and my former supervisor, retired USAF E-8, took a bunch of actions that led to one of the lowest points in my life…while our job is/was to advocate for vets.
It doesn’t end when those folks leave the military, they continue to screw with us even after getting out.

Dude your story is great. I had my SSG begun to haze me because I refused to agree and go along with “we’re a brotherhood, what happens there, stays there. We all have to back each other up no matter what.” This was right after he was telling us about all the “fine women” were going to come across during deployment.
Ended up getting an article 15, but luckily other soldiers backed me and I was sent to a different platoon that was loaned out to a different company. We deployed about a month later, Within 90 days of deploying, I had all my rank back. They saw the problem wasn’t me, but my leadership.
I ended up not reenlisting and went to college as well and also have a successful well paying job.

I have 4 months until I complete my 6 year enlistment. I joined intending to make it a 20+ year thing but the “leadership” at my first and only duty station has been the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. First day on the line ever in front of a running airplane, ready to take off, I was threatened to be knocked out by a staff sergeant simply because I didn’t understand what he wanted me to do while he was pointing erratically at the ground to my left and then to my right. Fast forward a few years of dealing with similar shit heads and enough medical issues to warrant a med sep, I finally made staff. Only I realized that making staff meant that I would be responsible for every airman under me messing up. All the guys that made staff before me are getting shit on by leadership and forced to do additional duties beyond the scope of their experience, to the point where they are being forced to come in on weekends and some have even been demoted. I didn’t feel like I was ready so I declined the promotion and decided I’d simply try to finish my contract and get out. This triggered the boot lickers in the flight office. I became the new target and was under the microscope for an entire year. Imagine going to work every single day in fear that any little mistake you make will be completely blown out of proportion and threatened with paperwork and article 15’s because you admitted you weren’t ready for the responsibility of being in charge of others and didn’t feel like $200 extra dollars a month was not worth the extra stress. Mental health told me they were surprised I hadn’t killed myself yet….anyways only a few months ago I got pulled into the office and told that since I declined my stripe, Im lowering morale at the shop and am just a walking “fuck you” to all my fellow airmen. They told me I’m a disgrace and if they have any say in the matter, I will be kicked out before I am allowed to finish my contract. They tried everything to stack paperwork against me, but since I never got in trouble even since basic, their plan proved to be a difficult task for them. I will admit my spirit is broken and my new mental health counselor is the only reason I don’t have a mental breakdown every week at work. The only thing I can be proud of is I did not allow them to win! I am going to finish my contract and leave this shit hole behind. My experience here ruined my view of the military and I’ve become a very hateful towards the individuals that tried to ruin my career and essentially my life. I’m constantly burdened by their presence at work and the fact that our new commander forces us to sit in hour long All calls every week just to watch these dick heads get awards. There’s so many stupid experiences I left out of this rant but I could probably write an entire book of hate if I told all the stories from the moment I stepped foot at this base to now… don’t join the military unless you hate your life, and for the love of god if you do, please don’t take it so serious. Be courteous to those around you and do whatever you need to do to the best of your ability but be weary because the culture is built to step on eachother and stab your peers in the back to get ahead. Nobody is your friend and nobody can truly be trusted. Rant over…

Similar scenario happened to me. I PCS’d to Scholfield Barracks I was infantry and I absolutely loved the Army at the time.
I go to JRTC with my new unit and there were heat casualties everywhere. Young Pvt with no family and in the military to earn his citizenship collapses, he’s a heat casualty. Medic gives him the silver bullet and confirms his temp.
His Plt Sgt goes “bullshit give me that” he take the thermometer and begins to sodomize this kid over and over because he thought he was faking it.
I end up reporting this guy so now I’m in the bad graces of my new unit.
When we get back to the garrison my wife drops on me that she wants a divorce my leadership learns about this and pulls me out of my home and into a cool down room along with a bogus “No Contact Order” which essentially is the militaries version of a restraining order but the catch is the commander is the one that issues them and there is no reasonable suspicion needed or even proof and legally the commander could do this.
I had no access to my money and I couldn’t eat at the chow hall because I was married. So I was stuck eating protein powder and peanuts. After 3 weeks of that I gave up and contacted my wife so she could bring my new Debt Card that came in the mail. She did willingly and I broke the no contact order. Leadership gives me an Article 15 for this, I’m busted down to E1 from E4, 45 days of extra duty, and 45 days of half pay(I was about to make E5) all because I stood up for someone who was raped and I decided to not starve.
In response to my Art15 I decided to not lift a finger for that unit. I refused to do anything.
I told them, “send me to a different battalion or kick me out I will not stand for this I want nothing to do with this organization. You can kick me out you can throw whatever you want at me I will still win. This is my 2nd contract so I’ll retain all my benefits no matter what.”
So that’s what happened, I ended up doing my final Physical so they couldn’t physically punish me. I ended up sitting around for months. They would try and throw everything at me and honestly it felt like they wanted me to commit suicide. I was jumped and choked within and inch of my life NCOs they restricted my driving, they sat on my orders, they wouldn’t let me leave post, they would try and make me check in consistently through phone (I ended up ignoring calls and told them to reach me Via Email). I made it through all of that but it still was hard. I saw 3 other soldiers commit suicide in that unit, the kid who was raped tried committing suicide and failed, they ended giving him and Art 15 for damage Govt property (himself). I developed a drinking/anger problem that I still deal with to this day. My last week I hid in a closet and once I had my DD214 I ran to a taxi with only a backpack (divorce took everything)
It may sound like I was being petty and if I laid on my back I probably would’ve recovered but we talk about this thing called “Integrity” in the Army and if I wouldn’t allow that treatment to other soldiers than why would I allow it to happen to me?
I had PCSd to Hawaii in love with the Army, it taught me so much and really grew me, but I left Hawaii with only a bag and my life disgraced, defeated, my confidence was destroyed, I was extremely anxious, and was hostile towards people as a preemptive defensive measure. Now it’s been 3 years after the military. I wondered through life for about a year and a half. I ended up going to trade school and now I’m the guy who changes the light bulbs on those tall broadcast towers, I travel the nation full time and I make just over $200k a year. I’m 26, I turn 27 next month. I just got back to work from a 2 week vacation to Hawaii. So I guess I won.

I just medically retired from the United States Marines out of Wounded Warriors Battalion East Camp Lejeune. I was hazed and tortured while I was fighting in Afghanistan 2009 Helmand Province, "Operation Moshtarak, Battle Of Marjah," by, my leadership going through the ranks of Corporal up to Gunnery Sergeant, who kept what all they did to me and a couple of others "In House." My life, health, and sanity were threatened multiple times. I've stared down the barrel of an M4 rifle and a 50 cal machine gun by those who were to cover and have my back. They would stage mock executions to do body searches for food I wasn't to have and strip my pack of things I brought from home. They took and stole from me, l wasn't allowed to hygiene or clean my clothes, I was only allowed 4 hours to sleep and did 12-hour foot patrols a day with no rest for the rest of the day I stood post or clean make their food burn shit pots and dig an IDF bunker 6 ft deep 10x10 there I was made to sleep outside the compound in that dark pit, they would put me on post while they all slept and put me on every mission to give me better odds of being killed. The leadership took chow privileges away that the Afghan Army Commander would secretly feed me food because of my state of malnourishment and being pushed and overworked. We had a stray dog we named, "Dinner," because the Afghan people were selling her as food. She was like an emotional support dog for me, I always had her around. She would go on my foot patrols warning us of danger at times. While I was on one-foot patrol I came back asking where she was and was told a SSGT that would haze me had killed her. She had puppies that she took care of I asked, "What happened to them?" I was told they were each put in a sandbag and thrown down in the water ravine just outside the base. You couldn't imagine my sorrow. I wasn't allowed to use the Satellite phone when my family worried or write home letters and feared they would read them seeing I'm calling for help. Days I was harrassed to kill myself, and that they would take care of planning out an accident happened. I was told repeatedly if I was shot or wounded, no one was coming to help me and I might receive a bullet in my back. I was practically treated as a POW, no one knew what was happening to me, no one could save me. The only time I felt a little safe was being on "foot patrols," and I would take other Marines' foot patrols because I was allowed my weapon. When I got stateside I reported it to the SGTMAJ of the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion that started the internal investigation which didn't get approval for CID,JAG, or NCIS to get involved, so they kept it all again "In House" and they all got away with it. Injustice Trauma on top of Trauma. That's only the tip of all they did and the negative effects that changed us. For some, the worst happened. Google " Sgt Jeffrey VanDyke, Hazed Recruits In Boot Camp Recruit Needing Multiple Skin Grafting To His Bottom." Because of how severely Cpl VanDyke was hazed as an NCO with us in Afghanistan by our leadership. When SGT Jeffery VanDyke became a Drill Instructor, he did what was done to him by our toxic Leadership to treat others. He even tried to cover up the reason why he did it, so it wouldn't make him a rat to call out the hazing in Afghanistan. I stayed in as long as I did so I could stand in the gap for those being hazed and stopped many hazings. Did it hurt my Promotions? Yes. Why did I stay in Service? Because I wished as a young Marine someone would've stood up and in the gap for me to make them stop, so I stood in the gap for others that cost me, but nothing they could do to me could be worse than what was done to me in Afghanistan, I could take it, but at a cost. See you never know what someone has been through. The injustice is a prison. It gets weirder, the SNCO who started the Hazings retired a 1stSgt from the Drill Field, he was arrested for Drugs and weapon assault charges, pleads guilty but they send his case to Veterans court lightening his sentence by sending him to a fun camp practically. The him and his friend on TH-cam make a video for brownie points.

I've seen it, I've experienced it. The amount of disdain I got from senior leadership while I was getting put on limdu for sleeping disorders was insane. Nearly self deleted on a few occasions. To get busted down from E-4 to E-1 is most definitely due to some big shi.. every bust I’ve seen it’s usually reduced in rank by one grade.. like an OTH discharge.. hmmm🤔

I almost got felonies when I was 14. I went around my neighborhood pulling mailboxes out of the ground for fun for some reason😂🤦‍♂️ What really got me caught though was me breaking a statue and the cops got my footprints and matched it with my sneakers bc I knew lying would make it worse. Luckily my neighbors let me fix the mailboxes and pay for the statue and none of them pressed charges. 2 or 3 of the houses were retired firemen or retired cops though😂 So my one neighbor explained he thought he was getting threatened by someone. Once you turn 18 though, you really gotta think things through because people are a-lot less likely to be lenient. Fire hydrant on the projector screen is crazy tho😂😂
Bro is built like an Ox💪
Just wanted to add, that I said, “felonies” because I pulled like 7-8 mailboxes out of the ground which could be a felony for each mailbox I’d assume. That would’ve sucked for me at 14.

I am going to respectfully take this one with a grain of salt. We had to PT and do extreme workouts on deployments and at home while I was a rifleman in the USMC, and one of my peers never wanted to PT or stay fit. He later tried to call out our leadership for hazing, but me and everyone else could say we were not hazed at all. There were lazy people back when I was in that never wanted to stay up to par with what they signed up for, and always tried getting out of stuff. Some went to medical all the time to avoid doing their jobs.

In my experience from 20 years in the Navy, is that those that had no hazing, or had it mild, like to hand out the worst. They privately turn on you for not participating, or not allowing it all, until someone gets hurt or killed, then the winkers and nodders that allowed it, find very deep holes to hide in.
