It should be ok for a bowl orientation. Keep in mind that you may experience more tearout on the end grain that shows up twice with each revolution. More than if you were cutting the bead with a gouge. How much will of course depend on the type of wood and how dry it is.
Mike--another great idea. Because I know so little about grinding why did you not quench the tool instead of just letting it gradually cool? Would that have made it more brittle?
Usually I quench. Perhaps I was too lazy to fill my quenching container. However, there are those who say that if you get the HSS hot enough, quenching can cause micro cracks along the ground edge. I am not in that camp.
You might make one work. But it would take a lot more grinding to get the correct profile. And this works best for smaller beads. Many turners don't have a wore out 1/4" or 3/8" worn out bowl gouge to use for this.

As a beginning woodturner I am wondering why a bowl gouge would not work instead of a spindle gouge?
You might make one work. But it would take a lot more grinding to get the correct profile. And this works best for smaller beads. Many turners don't have a wore out 1/4" or 3/8" worn out bowl gouge to use for this.
