Garage door spring replacement

  • That’s not the way I did it before, I remember now I screwed the eyes into the roof but looping a cord round them and pulling the spring up into position didn’t work
I just used a short loop of wire and levered the spring up by resting the screwdriver on a block of wood, there was too much friction for the cord to pull round the eye.
Hope this is of help, JP

My husband and myself just watched your video, absolutely brilliant ! the same happened to him lol, and we are still laughing, if you two got together it would be like Laurel and Hardy....
Many thanks for the info, and at least you did it.

Hi Rachel I watched the film again myself after your comment and had a good chuckle too and that's the only thing its good for as its next to useless for doing the job, I could not remember how I did the work a year or so previously but just went with it, thanks for the comment and I'm glad it was of some use if only as entertainment after all, regards John

Well, I can definitely tell you, I'm still none the wiser how to fix my garage door.
    Thanks for help 👍😂

Yep, it's a crap film but it gets a lot of hits, that's the only reason I keep it live .
I have replaced my door with an electric roller shutter door, surprisingly it was only two or three hundred quid more expensive than replacing the existing, total cost £1400. I recon I replaced a spring three times over a ten year period, at £100 a pop, expensive and for the amiture it's a dangerous job to do, take care.
The new roller door is fantastic, looks good and easy to operate.
Thanks for viewing and commenting regards John from sunny Devon UK 😊

@@JohnPatrick58 I have an idea that may help me.
The frame jams the springs slightly which results in a massive twang when closing the door. Tried lubricating but no luck. I'm going to borrow a heat gun and see if I can manipulate the frame to allow the spring to pass freely 🤞
      Keep tinkering my friend

    • @JohnPatrick58
      @JohnPatrick58  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@deano1161 did you know that there is an inner spring inside the big outer one you can see, maybe that smaller spring is catching on as you open or close the door but slips off and that's the twang you are hearing. Come to think of it I think my one may have been doing that, yes I remember it did. Good luck with the job and I will keep tinkering for as long as I am able. regards John.

Forgot to add a crushal bit of information. The small internal spring may have broken off of its fixing point but then does the catching on thing, slips off and makes the twang.

I use a thin washer as a temporary way to hold tension spring extended by about a foot, this allows the spring to be inserted and anchored and then the washer removed to hook the spring assembly on to the door.

I viewed a 'garage door spares' web site , they show how to change the spring unit, it was so easy to do, the spring units cost about £60-£75.
Taking the spring unit apart to replace the inner spring or other components is dangerous as the outer spring will expand with great force once the base pin is removed.

Hi Rhys, I really didn't think making that film through, I forgot that the first time I did the job it went differently to my plan, I,m glad it made you laugh, so after all the move did serve a useful purpose, thanks for commenting, John from sunny Devon UK

Well done for completing the installation, I can see where you connected the top op the spring but WHERE did you connect the bottom of the spring, that bit eludes me 🤔

  • @JohnPatrick58
    @JohnPatrick58  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi there, the spring has no lower condition, it works by pulling against itself as there is an inner and outer part to it. That's a bit of a stupid video on my part, as firstly it is very dangerous taking the load of the spring and the film isn't really a very good "how to film".
I was thinking of deleting the film but it has had a lot of hits with mixed reactions, some get very annoyed because I don't take it seriously enough, others find it useful and some say it's highly amusing. Thanks for viewing and commenting, keep safe if you do the job yourself. By the way I have replaced the door with an electric roller shutter, luxury, regards John from sunny Devon UK

Thank you kind Sir, I'm a little ashamed of this film as a tensioned spring can be very dangerous, I was thinking of deleting this film but it had a lot of hits and I'm trying to get to one million. That door has been replaced now with an electric roller shutter type, lovely. Thanks for viewing and commenting, regards John from sunny Devon UK

ALSO….Just been looking at your reply to @MrFryfish and see you’re in in sunny Devon, I’m in Rainy Pinhoe, Exeter with the EXACT same Garadoor…..how weird ( if not 7 years down the line).
Anyway, good luck with the leccy door🙄

Ye the door is fab and only tow or there hundred quid more than a replacement manual, I have a motorcycle and, it's so easy to roll out backwards, press the close button and go, getting back in is just as easy, pull up, out with the fob and in.
If I remember right the replacement springs were £100 all that time ago and if they bust every five years or so it gets expensive 😊

There's no need to open up the rivetted bottom end box - nothing is fixed in there. Just take off the press fit trim at the top end.

Hi Jack, I'm a little ashamed of that video as a loaded spring is very dangerous as you will know, I don't want to delete it as it has had a lot of views and I'm trying to get to 1000000 hits, I'm at 890000 or so at the moment. That door has been replaced with an electric roller shutter now, which as you can imagine is so much easier to use. I fixed mine after ordering a spare spring. It was a lot easier than in this video!
You can prise the trim off with a flathead screwdriver - it's attached by a metal groove that pinches the side of the casing.
I then just followed the instructions that came with the spring. With the door propped open, poke the eye loop at the top of the spring through the gap at the top of the casing and attach the pin at the top.
Then pull the spring down (using gloves, as it's greased and could pinch your fingers) till the plastic collar is under the runners attached to the door.
Then just push the lower part of the spring into the casing and press the trim back on.

Do not change a spring like this!! This guy doesn't not know what he is doing and lucky to have his fingers still. The spring it located first with the retaining pin at the top then the door it attached when it is in the open position.
I am a trained professional that does this daily

Hi Xavier thank you for such a positive and constructive comment. You are absolutely right, I have now replaced springs three times, getting not much change out of £100 each time, I do plan to replace the door soon when I refurbish the rest of the outside decorations.
My methods in the film are rather poor and could be dangerous if someone copied me I didn't understand the weight and energy stored up in the spring.
Thanks again, regards from John in sunny Devon UK

Have had the same type garage door for over 23 yrs and it's still original spring and it's been repaired twice by making two loops in spring and joining them together like you would a keyring.
When it comes to refitting spring make sure garage door is open its a lot lot easier, pull out a good 14" of the inner spring and slip something in between the coils at the bottom to stop it going back inside the tube.
Then refit assembly back in to door frame lining up spring with the hole to slide securing Rod back through slide out small spring retainer ( I used a pen knife as it was close to hand) line up plastic part that slides into door replace side trim ( there's no need to remove bottom section which is screwed in place) and try the door. Hope this is of help
