@@BBash19 That's a tough one to beat. It's the best part of the song (that's not saying much but...). He gets SO much across in just a few measures. It really is an awesome composition within another musical composition.
Mike just released an album on Frontiers Records called Songs of White Lion where he did solo performances of a lot of his old White Lion classics. You could tell that the songs were in a different key but that was intentional. Mike said that he can't sing a lot of those songs today like he did 30+ years ago so he doesn't try. He still killed it on that album, though. The songs are truly timeless and they give us a glimpse of Mike Tramp 2023 instead of Mike Tramp 1987. He's one of those guys like Michael Sweet from Stryper or Jeff Keith from Tesla: he realizes that Father Time is catching up to him so he adjusts accordingly and is honest enough with his fans to be upfront about it. I can totally respect that.
Fellow guitarists know...the rhythm parts on this song are no joke to play at tempo, and the solo...fuggetaboutit. Even Vito doesn't quite nail it live compared to the studio recording. Its a monster of melodic taps and bends. Vito even said in an interview that the nuances and subtlety of such solos don't translate well into an aggressive live show and the simpler stuff goes over better.
That was when Vitto was self doubting himself and was when he did an overhaul in style making it more aggressive and simpler, being influenced by the current bands at time they were touring. He was also chained by the technology of that time, he couldn't get the clean arpeggios since the amps and pickups couldn't handle the gain and would turn to mush allegedly.
Even more amazing when you consider the studio cut was just him practicing the solo. Michael Wagener had the tape rolling and they cut it right from Vito's first practice take.
I absolutely love this song I used to love driving in my 67 red Firebird convertible and playing this song and I absolutely love the guitar part in the song blows me away I just love this song
This is a great song they never got the real recognition that they deserve Mike tramp sounds great and the band is tight and Vito brata is an amazing guitarist one of the best
Zakk Wylde said this song is the only Song he thought guitar tapping fit perfectly with he was not into guitar tapping. But he said the song it’s perfect with it.
Killer players. Wish Vito hadn’t dropped off the face of the Earth and we could have seen what else he could have done. The bass player of course is James Lomenzo who now plays for Megadeth which is a pretty darn cool gig!
@thedude4672 From what I read, he injured his fret hand around 1997 or so. He can still play classical guitar without too much trouble but it causes him quite a bit of pain when he tries to play electric. I'm not sure if his situation has gotten any better on that front. I hope it has. Of course, it's also entirely possible that he had his fun as a rock star and wants to live his life as a faceless nobody like the rest of us. Nothing wrong with that. Not everyone can live the life of a touring musician for their entire lives.
Really good performance but they should’ve focused on the guitarist more when he was playing- he really made the song extra special.. I remember this song from my youth even though I wasn’t into hair bands. Why? Because it’s a really good song! ✌️
Why did the camera guy move away from Vito's fingers while he was soloing? I don't need to see Mike Tramp waiting for the solo to be over. I need to see Vito working that fretboard!
As long as people get asked 'who was the greatest guitarist?' and the answer comes back 'EVH' or 'Hendrix' or (insert any even worse answer), then Bratta is vastly underrated.
@@thorman944 on a list of "greatest guitarists," Bratta has to be rated under EVH and Hendrix. He is a good guitarist, but he is way too derivative of Eddie. He fell into the same trap I do. I like the way EVH sounded so much, my tone, technique, phrasing, and note choice end up being a little too much like EVH..
I think it was due to White Lion's place in the pecking order of glam metal bands. They were kinda like Ratt and Skid Row: they had some commercial success but never reached the popularity of your Poisons and your Motley Crues and your Bon Jovis so people never paid as much attention to them as they did the more popular bands of the movement. Vito was a ridiculous talent for sure, though.
Here's something to think about. Vito Bratta constructed this solo. Many have copied it...but listen to it again. Could you come up with something so melodic and meaningful?
Because the director figures the lead singer is the most important member of the band. Just like the "After Hours" show with Ozzy and Randy. Camera cuts to Ozzy and drums and bass during the guitar solos.
@@JoeR203 yes but that was a more critical as there is limited video footage of randy because Ozzy and Sharon were too cheap to make videos for the first two records. And the live show wasn’t planned until after randy‘s death. Every second away from randy on after hours is a crime.

Against the guitar solos from other "comparable" types of mid-late 80s n perhaps early 90s rock ballads... Vito's solo here just stands alone.... melodic, thrilling, and (to be less obvious/trite) unmatched!
Sad.. all I think about is the model that played his love interest in the video Julie that was killed in a car wreck 😭🌈 Why couldn't he at least mention her at the end or beginning of this song. So strange cuz it sounds like he's singing it to her.. cause she is gone.. for real
Thanks for info. The other day I was wanting a good doc covering babes in Rick videos then and now zz top golden earing white lion motley Crue countless videos.. May she rip Julie.. For the time she sorta had the Paula Abdul sight resemblance and it was almost like seeing Paula in a cool White Lion video and song imo back then What year did she die is there a link?
Vito is on my top 5 of all time list for tone. IMO the top 5 are, in no particular order: Brian May, Carlos Santana, David Gilmour, Eric Johnson and Vito Bratta.
He mentioned a wrist issue ... I think he developed arthritis in his fretting hand. ..the only way to improve this issue... Is through stem cell injections... I have experienced. This and had the injection... But I'm not what I used to be ... In my playing.
Vito replaced Eddie as my favorite guitarist when I heard this song in '88. Still love Eddie, but Vito became #1 for me. I just wish Vito would at least upload some 5 minute videos of himself just noodling around on guitar. 1 or 2 videos a month would be enough to satisfy the fans. We don't need a band/album/tour. Just Vito playing.
Where did you hear that EVH was a big fan of Vito Bratta? In all the interviews of EVH I've seen and read throughout the 80's and 90's I don't remember him ever mentioning being a fan of Bratta at all.
C’mon director. You never cut away from the solo. Golden rule of filming music.
that's been the bane of my life watching live performances. the director never knows the songs and when to spotlight the soloist.
Vito is a great guy, professional, talented beyond anyone else, yet humble and generous.
Simply one of the best guitar solos of all time.
Simply empty sound without rhythm guitar during solo
Simply an overstatement. Vito is a great guitarist and highly underrated, but there are plenty better solos out there.

Vito is so underrated! One of the best there is!
He’s only underrated because he hasn’t made new music in 30 years. However, he received plenty of attention and accolades between ‘87 - ‘91.
Agreed
Absolutely !
i like vito and all but he's not a strong live player in the least.
Best there was
This is such a great song. Man, those were the days.
When this song came on the radio it was electric ..Reached number # 8 in 1988 .. So many memories.. Wait was an anthem..

That solo is incredible, never herd something like that.
Mike was pretty spot on vocally live. Nice job. I was at this show too :)
What a time to be alive 🤘this song is fkn incredible , a perfect pop metel song imo , and that solo by Vito bratta is bone chilling
You're a lucky man, Sean Naughton
Tough to pull off any “real” live stuff ...pretty good job here!
He sounded pretty gassed to me. Maybe better to do this song as an encore.
But Vito was spot on as usual.
He was pretty good. Probably should have done some cardio though.
Brilliant melodic solo by VIto.
Video Producer, “I got an idea let’s switch the camera to Mike right in the middle of the solo”
Yes let's watch him stand in the corner while Vito is shredding this solo
Vito Bratta....Amazing! I could listen to him for another 30 years!
