To be fair, he really is, yeah hes murdering people, but he's out in the streets, dealing with prostitutes and homeless people up close and personal, he's probably had more interactions with the dregs of humanity more so than Evelyn has.

@@delanorrosey4730 Nah, that has nothing to do with it. Her family is rich as well, although losing such a prestigious match might be felt in their bank account. You can also notice that she stops crying really quickly after Patrick leaves. Her crying was almost 100% staged.

I really wish I could still use the “ I have to return some videotapes” line to get out of an uncomfortable situation. The problem is that all of the video stores are now extinct 😂

The way he tells a complete lie and then the actual truth in the same sentence is brilliant.

Yes, it's the moment he realises he's lost his grip on reality and his psychosis has totally taken over. The whole scene is unrealistic (only in your fantasies do you just shoot everyone and kill them all with perfect shots) and is pretty much how a schizophrenic meltdown might occur. I have a close friend with paranoid schizophrenia and this is basically how things play out in their head all the time, just with added voices telling them to do stuff. You end up doing all sorts of stuff and end up not even sure if you really did do it or if it really happened. My friend once strangled and dismembered a cat during an attack, and the only way they know it happened was their partner confirmed it to them.
Also he shoots the security guard and then comes back and the guard is alive and he signs in.
I love how he shoots the janitor, like he really gave a fuck why christian was doing loops in a revolving door lol

They're just temporary skin puppets acting out scripts until they're replaced by the next batch. The story never ends. Notice in the end how Bateman doesn't even have a Scotch (they ordered dry beers but as soon as his friend says he wants one Patrick must drink one). In the end he realizes this but it isn't freedom it doesn't bring joy or relief he knows no matter what he does he can never escape

I've seen this scene like 10 times, but I'm just noticing now how, when Evelyn keeps asking "where are you going," Patrick humorously, for whatever reason eventually feels he's got to come up with some place, and uses his go-to excuse ("I have to return some video tapes"). He didn't even have to specify a place in the first place lol

I hear people say that a lot, but IMO the movie just isn't comedic at all (except for maybe the 'Hip to be Square'-scene).
It's not that I don't recognise the satire, it's that the horror outweighs it. Bale's performance is just too disturbing (and authentically psychopathic) for it to be funny: I see humour, yet I feel disgust.
It's not a bad juxtaposition, though.. It just asks a bit more of the audience's literacy.

Viewing this scene seperately from the movie (I've only seen clips) it's interesting as to what is real and what is hallucination. He fires 14 shots without reloading. He blows up a cop car with one shot from a handgun.

It is generally accepted that if someone comes into your building with a woman and introduces themselves as "Mr. Smith", you don´t ask any more questions. I wouldn´t be surprised if the reception log like 10-15 Mr. Smiths in it.

The rest of that dialogue is also brilliantly inane. He tells her several times, in no uncertain terms that he's breaking up with her and she fails to acknowledge his meaning.
I feel like she's a narcissistic as well, Patrick is definitely a psychopath, it seems she's only with him for status and friends
at 0:14 the backgrond tells us a lot about the different moods of the characters: she has the colourful wall of the restaurant and behind him is the chaos of people talking loud and walking around portraying both her naiveness and his evilness ... also his shots appear to be hand held and shaky and hers are in a steady tripod which starts to shake (1:11) as soon as she finally understands the seriousness of the situation... genius touch

The weirdness makes a lot more sense once you know the plot twist at the end. Even he seems surprised at how great his shooting is and how he managed to blow up the police cars in a few shots. Lots of hints...
Ah yes. Only in Hollywood is every patrol car made with C4 right in the frame and the killers spend 3x as much time at the combat range as the PD.
It's not necessarily meant to be real though. It is implied that most, if not all of Bateman's killings were in his head.

We are analysing his movie after all and if something is unclear or cryptic in the movie it means it's open to interpretation. The whole point of the film is that there is no correct answer, the audience are left to belive what they want based on what they've just seen. What the director says years after it's release doesn't change that.

I wonder how much of this movie actually happened and how much actually takes place in Bateman's mind.
He kills a lot of people, including Paul Allen and the women. Although his account of the murders gets increasingly bizarre and detached from reality as time goes on. He has no real connection to other people and they also are so self-absorbed in yuppie land, too focused on their business cards and restaurant reservations that they have no connection to him, so he just becomes increasingly disconnected from everything.

@@Screeno1993 Yes they're real. Most of them anyhow. The whole story is a comedic critique of yuppie 80s wall street.
You'll notice that everyone keeps mistaking Bateman for someone else. Like Paul Allen insults Bateman to his face not realising he's talking to him. The whole story is about how everyone is so lost in their own little world and quest for status and wealth that they wouldn't notice a psycho right under their nose. Especially since a psycho's behaviour is not dissimilar to their own. That's the critique of the story. And that wouldn't really work if it was all imagined.
The only things that made me feel it was all in his head was the chainsaw scene, the cat ATM scene and the obviously grandiose police chase thing. Especially that because it looks like he is having a psychotic episode. Well, he was.
@@Screeno1993 Aye though remember the fallacy of composition. Just because one part of something is right or incorrect it doesn't mean the rest of it is. He falls into a deeper psychosis as it goes on, partly because he has no-one in his life to anchor him in reality, everyone is so disconnected from each other. The later murders are increasingly fantastical. And that's what the final monologue is about, the one about how there's no exit sign.

The book has its moments too, and it's not just those included in the film. The chapter about Patrick and his colleagues changing their minds on where to get a reservation for the entire night or Patrick eating a jellyfish come to mind
