Thanks very much for this video. I had the leak, just a few drops on the ground about a year ago. At the time the dealership just replaced the seal. Then, in the cold snap we had this past December I found the red puddle underneath. This time they did the stub shaft/axle replacement per the TSB under extended warranty. Your video shows exactly what was involved and what they did. Thanks again!
I'd probably recommend to friends to NOT attempt this at home. I did this on my 2010 Milan 2.5 and found it to be problematic. The dealer would not lend me any of the tools and parts stores did not have a bushing puller large enough. I ended up using a pilot bearing puller on a slide hammer instead, I wouldn't recommend this as it can scratch up the case and it constantly slips off the bushing. The axle also fought me going out and in; in fact, on the new axle I ended up having to file down the C clip in order to get it to go in. Here's all the tools you can rent from normal parts store if you want to attempt it: Slide hammer Pilot bearing slide hammer attachment Bearing and race driver set Front hub/axle puller (makes it easier to not have to hammer the CV axle) CV axle pry bars 36mm axle nut impact socket Excellent video, good info

For some ridiculous reason, the Ford factory shop manuals and the Haynes manual both have you removing the two lower control arms which is very difficult and a real PITA. Your method of removing the upper control arm ball joint made it really easy. I've subscribed to your channel and I'm sure I will be utilizing you expertise many more times.
Ok I just did this job in my driveway. Great video, was extremely helpful. Bought the slide hammer tool from harbor freight. Looked like it was going to work great, not so much. Ended up cutting the bushing with a dremel then prying to bend and remove. Bought the bearing driver tool from harbor freight, worked great. I got lucky. My fusion had 120k miles, looked like the axles could be salvaged. Again, great video!
Pretty sure I nicked the bore a bit when I pulled out the bushing. I smoothed it out a bit with some sandpaper and cleaned it really good. Applied some extra locktite, hopefully it’s ok. It seems pretty snug so I think it will be fine. Thanks for the video. This really helped me. My bushing was in there really tight but the puller kit I got from Amazon did ok. I wish I had a longer slide hammer as it’s really cramped even with the shock removed.
thanks, u are a savior and your video is perfect. The instruction in the ( kit ) are so poorly explained that it gave me a impression that Ford want us to fail and bring them the vehicle, for an axle and for a transmission too.
I always take apart the whole caliper assembly like I'm doing a brake job when I pull half shafts out. Never thought to just remove those cradle bolts and pop the whole thing off. That'll definitely save some time. Thanks for the video.
That's the way Ford recommends to do it if brakes are not being repaired this way nothing gets messed up especially on ones that contain little spring spreaders etc.
This was super helpful.it was hard to do but i pushed through cutting the bushing l w a diamond file.took forever but after that it was cake. Thank you. Henry

Can you post the part numbers for the bushing installer and seal installer? I order 2 Motorcraft TX 684 kits also the part number on the extension bar you used to drive it in . This is also being done on 2008/2009 for escapes Thanks Robert
Planning on doing this in the near future. Thanks for your videos, I have been able to do a lot of repairs on my own. Will be draining the fluid, and doing a partial fluid change since I'm in there. Having trouble getting an exact answer for what type of fluid to replace with. parts guy stated all new trans use the ford Mercon LV ATF but I am skeptical as I have a 2010 Milan/Fusion Hybrid w CVT. Should it not use a CVT fluid?
Absolutely love your demonstration I find that you are 100% correct in your installation I do have the same problem. My axle go into the transmission is very worn and I need to replace the bushing I cannot find a bushing anywhere can you help me out
Well but look at everybody else's comments months and years ago I guess it's not the automated texts or anything sure wish someone would tell us what part that was everybody seems to be Clueless
Had one a few weeks ago on an escape. Sadly customer noticed leak 4 months prior and just kept driving until trans was slipping. By the time it got to me fluid was pouring out as fast you could pour it in. It actually wore through the bushing and damaged the trans case. You could move the axle shaft up and down a good 1/4 inch. All just because the customer was too lazy to bring it in earlier.
Oh wow that is lazy and now very expensive. This one was a fleet car and the Fusions have that shield underneath so I understand they didn't see a bunch of drips on the ground. This one actually came in for a check engine light on the evap system as the only complaint.
Fantastic vids that give me the courage to tackle such tasks myself. I have a G5M 5 spd man fusion that I want to change both sides (160k+ miles). CV axle replacement brand matter much so long as not remanufactured? Trying to figure out what ones come with the bushing and seal.
hi, i have 2018 hybrid ford fusion, recently have same CV axle leaking issue, already changed axle and axle seal, just wonder if i need the same bushing u mention to solve the leaking issue
I haven't noticed any leak but my CV half shaft is clicking like crazy so I ordered up a new one. Was going to let a local shop throw it in for me tomorrow afternoon but now I have learned of this bushing/seal issue and I'm hesitant to not replace all 3 parts at 1 time. I see where you told Steve you could do it for $200 so I'm wondering where you're located. My wife uses this car for work now and I want it done right. I'm not sure this local shop has all the tools required to do it correctly and affordably.
I just had to pay $620 at my local Ford dealer to have this done out of warranty...how is it, that with this problem afflicting so many vehicles and model years, with seemingly near-certainty at some point in the vehicle's life, that Ford has not initiated a Customer Satisfaction program to remedy this?
FordTechMakuloco Unless you're happening to travel through Indiana, probably couldn't happen, haha...of course, nobody seems to want to pass through the Hoosier state lately (for good reason)... I'm just upset because I had to do this exact same repair 5 years ago on my 2010 Escape. Same leak. Same bad axle shaft finish. Same TSB. Yes, I'm not happy about the cost, but I understand why all of the charges worked out like they did ($240 parts + $260 labor + $60 diagnostic + $60 shop fees/taxes). I just can't believe that Ford would let a known issue persist for so long without changing something at the manufacturing end of things...
+FordTechMakuloco Have you seen this leak happening on the RH side at all? 7 months later, I have discovered a leak on this side as well. No TSB as far as I can tell - what are your thoughts on replacing the intermediate axle shaft at the same time as the seal? Any idea on whether the surface finish of the axle on this side would also have been improved?
Repair shop just called and tried telling me they have to take the transmission apart or get a used trans and install it because the bushing is worn out and allowing the cv shaft to move side to side, ruining the seal... That's what most folks run into whenever leaving your vehicle in the hands of a repair shop that you don't deal with on a regular bases. or they figure you'll probably never be coming back to them, so all bets are off as/per how much they'll try screwing you..... Sometimes the worse thing you can do in a situation like this is tell them that there is a tool made to remove the inner bushing & that the left side has been the problem side when it comes to the cv shaft transmission seal leaking issue....... Cars been there a week & the guy just now calls with two ways to fix it as long as we hand him $1,500 (and it'll be ready by the end of the day) That's usually the case in one of those fuck the customer deals.... Thanks for posting the video. My stepson needs his ass kicked for not changing that bushing like I asked him to...
What is the part numbers for the removal tool and installer. I ended up using ready rod washers and nuts to get it out of a 2014 Escape. Do you recommend the axle being changed too?
+Raul Rivera The kits are right and are the latest kits. You need these kits to complete the repair. If you only replace one of the three items in the kit the leak will return.
FordTechMakuloco... Thank You for the great videos!! I have a 2013 Fusion Se with a 1.6GTDI l4 and I can’t find an axle shaft kit on amazon. Can you please link the correct axle shaft and seals for this year and model? I only see for 3.0 and 2.5 engine models and amazon says it can’t find a compatible part for my car. Thanks
Still haven’t tackled this yet as the local ford dealer told me I have to drop the transmission and split the case on the 2013 fusion Se to get a new bushing in. Is there a way to get the bushing out the way you show in this video?
+FordTechMakuloco why is the assembly kit you mentioned for the front right side, ford seems to only have the kit for the right side, could you explain?thnx always!!
For the Fusions, how many miles on average before you start seeing this leak ? Also regarding 6F35 transmission service, can I drain and fill with 5 qrts, or do I need to go to the dealership for something more thorough? Thanks!
These seem to vary depending on how they are driven, I have seen some very low mileage leak and some like my escape 6F35 125k miles and no leaks. Do I drain and fill it is the best way for this trans, just let it drain fully. Make sure you use Mercon LV.
FordTechMakuloco Thank you for your response! So, like other transmissions not being serviced by a fluid exchanger, do I need to drain and fill 3 three times in order to change out all the fluid (going through each gear before draining each time)? Also when I refill is it 5 qrts each time (total of 15 qrts?)? Thanks. Just want to do a thorough job at servicing the trans. without having to go to Ford for the fluid exchanger machine. BTW, I subscribed. great channel. thanks for doing this for fellow Ford owners!
FordTechMakuloco Brian,What is the TSB number for a 2010 Fusion 6F35? My driver's side seal is leaking and the passenger side is starting to seep. Thanks
@@ReclusiveMountainMan I drain and fill 2x (at 2 oil change intervals) at around 50K miles as there is no replaceable filter in these transmissions. It is cheap insurance!
We have a 2007 Ford Edge and we were wondering if they same applies to our vehicle as it does to the Escape and Fusion. Our vehicle is leaking in the same spot RH side. Also if you have an idea were to find parts besides a dealer. Thank you so much.
2013 Escape driving me crazy, has vibration around 45-50mph, goes away completely when off throttle. left side inner CV joint has play/wobble, not in the joint itself but where it goes in the trans. I really thought replacing this bushing would solve the problem but it didn't. The original bushing wasn't worn at all. Now I'm wondering if the problem is in the trans, like a worn diff bearing or bearing seat.
FordTechMakuloco I just installed a salvage transmission into my 2011 Fusion and after putting in several quarts of Mercon LV, I let it sit overnight to see if I had any leaks, which I did on this seal. My questions are, since I used new fluid, can I get by with not draining the fluid completely out before pulling the shaft? And after installing a different trans into these 2 cars, a 2011 Fusion and a 2011 Focus, do I have to have the Ford dealer program the new trans to the car? I’m pretty sure the Fusion will have to be reprogrammed but I’m not sure about the Focus. Thanks
I spent all day doing this...and still cannot get the old CV axle out of the transmission....Im not sure what the issue is...but it will not come out, whats the secret? I just ordered a cv axle puller too that works with a slide hammer...I still havent gotten to taking the bushing and seal...didnt expect this to be a 2 day project...
It's not necessary since you would have around lost 1 qt of fluid before even noticing it. I burn out my tranny on my fusion hybrid from leaking all the fluid but 1 qt.
I had no ideas some/any Ford dealers loaned out these specialized tools. I fabricated axle seal tools from caliper measurements. Probably would have saved 2+ hours if I could have borrowed the right one.
Sydney Townend I was unable to get my hands on that bushing puller, however I was able to successfully pull it with a pilot bearing puller for my slide hammer. It took me a few tries for it to finally catch the edge of the bushing, but persistence paid off. Good luck.
@@FordTechMakuloco I have a 14 fusion does this apply? The inboard joint feel loose in the transmission. I also have a vibration at 80mph. I road force balanced my tires and the vibration didn't change. I feel the axle is causing the vibration.
FordTechMakulaco,Questions:1. Can you provide the OTC Tool part numbers for the bushing extractor and seal installer (and any other specialty tools)?2. I see from your link to amazon the Motorcraft kit part number is TX-684 for the left side. Do you know the Motorcraft kit part number for the right side? Keep in mind the right side on my 2012 Fusion also has an intermediate shaft, is this included in the kit?3. Does the right side seal replacement require anything different than you are showing for the left side? Thanks again for posting this video!!
Could you please tell me the part number of the bushing and the seal? Terrible time trying to find the part. 2010 Ford fusion SEL 2.5 l front wheel drive driver side
Do you have any idea what a shop repair bill would look for something like this? How much should I pay? Also, how many miles is "too much" to purchase for a 2010 Ford Fusion in your opinion?
So any common problems with it that you know of? So far we've had ours back to the dealer four times now for the same problem and they still haven't fixed it yet. Got the car about two or three months ago. Wife brought it back in today. Every once in a while when the brakes are applied the car pulls real hard to the left like the right front brake isn't working at all. I've suspected something under the hood all along. They've replaced all rotors and pads and both front calipers. I'm really beginning to question their ability to do their job.
I have a 2010 Mercury Milan premier V6 3.0 liter. now i wonder do i have to take my transmission apart to change my half shaft on the driver side and the axle kits do come with the seals and bushings if I'm right because this video taught me a lot just by watching. I have the part coming to me i just cant afford the mechanic right now. help
Is this repair similar on the 44J transmission? I’m seeing some evidence of a leak on the underside of the engine when underneath for an oil change. 2013 Fusion Hybrid
I posted before, anyways I checked my dipstick for transmission after 33 mile drive going 80-90 back home. Keep car running and wipe dip stick and check and it says half and looks non red. 58k miles, if dealer looked at when they had to fix oil leak under warranty I remember seeing full reddish mark when checking in garage less oil change. Should I assume I have this issue? Why else would my dip stick say half after warmed up fluid?
+Ninjamaag the way this trans is filled through the dipstick tube it can give false readings until after the tube has drained now it seems you are getting the correct reading and should be adjusted
This is fantastic, I just found this problem on my 2009 Lincoln MKS on the last oil change. Now I feel comfortable doing the job myself.(With a 2nd review of your video). I'll be getting those parts and loaner tools from Ford if they will allow it.
There is no bushing or half shaft issues on the 6f50 but the seal comes out the same way as does the shaft, drain plug same area, uses the same fluid etc
I thought this was the issue on my father in laws fusion hybrid but after getting underneath it actually appears a that the passenger side cv axle is what’s leaking quite badly. I found a service bulletin that was a later release I believe from 2017 that covers the 2013 fusion hybrid passenger side but I can’t find any other information on this problem. Are you aware of this service bulletin. It seems to call for gear oil being used in the repair which could confused me.
Besides the transmission fluid, would everything else apply to the 2010 4 cylinder manual transmission? Or they shouldn't need the bushing replaced upon changing the axle?
Can you show part number of bushing i just had my cvjoint axle insttalled and it started leaking from seal need part number i have a 2014 ford fusion se with a1.5 litre can stop leake this is my second attempt to correct problem for told me they don't make a bushing for that fusion car can u help

FordTechMakuloco
Thank you for your response!
Thanks for subscribing! I would drain and fill it, drive fro a week then drain and fill it again the next weekend that is more than enough.
I have a 2010 ford escape with the same problem will the same parts work? Thanks in advance
i just need the bushing
We have a 2007 Ford Edge and we were wondering if they same applies to our vehicle as it does to the Escape and Fusion. Our vehicle is leaking in the same spot RH side. Also if you have an idea were to find parts besides a dealer. Thank you so much.
Danielle Young I would only use the Ford seals. Yours does not have the bushing issue just a sealing issue.
How do I find just the bushing?
2013 Escape driving me crazy, has vibration around 45-50mph, goes away completely when off throttle.
left side inner CV joint has play/wobble, not in the joint itself but where it goes in the trans. I really thought replacing this bushing would solve the problem but it didn't. The original bushing wasn't worn at all.
Now I'm wondering if the problem is in the trans, like a worn diff bearing or bearing seat.
Hi do you find issue ? i had the sam problem.
@@levussify it was actually the right side CV shaft, very strange.
The kid a genius,
Almost 40 definitely not a kid.
Thanks
Where can we find the tool/puller you used on the race to get it out?
thanks for sharing, does that applied to ford edge AWD too?
saddam al-rushdi No that has the 6F50 trans in it totally different.
Where can I buy the cv joint ? Ford sells the entire shift including the cv and joint and boots etc.
Great video!! You made it look too easy!
1:18 is it absolutely necessary to drain the transmission fluid?
It's not necessary since you would have around lost 1 qt of fluid before even noticing it. I burn out my tranny on my fusion hybrid from leaking all the fluid but 1 qt.
I had no ideas some/any Ford dealers loaned out these specialized tools. I fabricated axle seal tools from caliper measurements. Probably would have saved 2+ hours if I could have borrowed the right one.
We do it all the time to customers and shops in town as long as they buy parts from us of course.
Where can I loan or buy the special bushing tool from? Looking to do this job in the near future.
Sydney Townend I was unable to get my hands on that bushing puller, however I was able to successfully pull it with a pilot bearing puller for my slide hammer. It took me a few tries for it to finally catch the edge of the bushing, but persistence paid off. Good luck.
Another excellent presentation. Nice attention to detail. Can't wait for the procedure on the Escape. Thanks.
Me too the Escape will be much easier I love doing those. Thankfully the Escape is actually more common than the Fusions.
@@FordTechMakuloco do you have the part number for the bushing removal tool?
What about the Ford Edge’s?
@@FordTechMakuloco excelente video una pregunta maestro dónde puedo comprar esa erramienta para sacar el buje
@@FordTechMakuloco I have a 14 fusion does this apply? The inboard joint feel loose in the transmission. I also have a vibration at 80mph. I road force balanced my tires and the vibration didn't change. I feel the axle is causing the vibration.
I have a 2013 mkx and I have play in my driver side cv axle is there a bushing behind the seal on that model
Thank you for this. The link for the shaft bearing and seal - Thank you!
What is the tool number for the seal installer? I got one and it too big and said it's for the axle seal.
Where can I get a hold.of that removal seal tool?
Angel Meza I just use a flat blade screwdriver to cave in the seal itself and pop it out with an ordinary pry bar.
FordTechMakuloco I meant the tools need to get the inner seal and to reinstall the seals
Oh the inner bushing that is a dealer only tool or you can buy it online also but the cost of the OTC tools is allot.
FordTechMakuloco Do you have a link to the actual tool from OTC? Might be cheaper than taking the car to a dealer for out of warranty repair.
Is this also something to watch for on the 2012 3.5L model? I have a 2010 traverse too. Damn, I hope it isn't affected too.
For the 3.5l Sport you are using a totally different transmission.
The valve bodies on these fail and cause harsh downshifts and a few other concerns otherwise this trans is about bulletproof.
Muito bem explicado excelente dica obrigado.
i need to replace the passenger side bushing and seal. is it the same as the driver?
I have a 2010 Mercury Milan premier V6 3.0 liter. now i wonder do i have to take my transmission apart to change my half shaft on the driver side and the axle kits do come with the seals and bushings if I'm right because this video taught me a lot just by watching. I have the part coming to me i just cant afford the mechanic right now. help
Brasil não tem pessoas profissional igual a esses
Where did you get the tool to pull the inner pushing out and is there somewhere to buy this bushing without the rest of the kit?
it's a blind bearing puller
hey bro, little question , is the axle seal of the ford focus 2012 are the same size for both side? thanks
Hey, I have a 15 1.5L eco boost with same leak..can you point me in the right direction for parts etc?
Where do we find that tool to pull out the seal?
Hey where can I find that press to put the bushing back in, it’s been a nightmare
@FordTechMakuloco. I imagine the Mercury Milan is the same as the Fusion.
Can you post a link to the tools that you are using in this video? Thanks
I got into a 07 milan ,v 6,alot of squeaks underneath when engine gets hot,it drives me nuts,Ive seened many of your videos,
Take a good look at that RH mount I have seen many squeak.
Does this apply to 2014 fusion hybrid?
no
Is this repair similar on the 44J transmission? I’m seeing some evidence of a leak on the underside of the engine when underneath for an oil change. 2013 Fusion Hybrid
will this apply for a 08 fusion as well??
I posted before, anyways I checked my dipstick for transmission after 33 mile drive going 80-90 back home. Keep car running and wipe dip stick and check and it says half and looks non red. 58k miles, if dealer looked at when they had to fix oil leak under warranty I remember seeing full reddish mark when checking in garage less oil change. Should I assume I have this issue? Why else would my dip stick say half after warmed up fluid?
I have this transmission 2012 Ford Fusion SE i4
+Ninjamaag the way this trans is filled through the dipstick tube it can give false readings until after the tube has drained now it seems you are getting the correct reading and should be adjusted
This is fantastic, I just found this problem on my 2009 Lincoln MKS on the last oil change. Now I feel comfortable doing the job myself.(With a 2nd review of your video). I'll be getting those parts and loaner tools from Ford if they will allow it.
Your mks doesn't have the same trans, you have awd? Is it leaking from the LH Axle seal like this one?
FordTechMakuloco Yes, Its leaking from the drivers side. I have the 6F50 trans but It seems to look like the same setup. Are there major differences?
There is no bushing or half shaft issues on the 6f50 but the seal comes out the same way as does the shaft, drain plug same area, uses the same fluid etc
Is the passenger side any harder?? I think it might be leaking a little as well.. Driver side for sure though.
FWD it is about the same, if it's AWD don't even attempt.
What is the Parr number for the tool that you use to remove the sleve
Great video! What does a job like this cost to get done by a professional?
I was quoted $575
I thought this was the issue on my father in laws fusion hybrid but after getting underneath it actually appears a that the passenger side cv axle is what’s leaking quite badly. I found a service bulletin that was a later release I believe from 2017 that covers the 2013 fusion hybrid passenger side but I can’t find any other information on this problem. Are you aware of this service bulletin. It seems to call for gear oil being used in the repair which could confused me.
How bout for a 2013 Ford fusion se 1.6 engine?
Besides the transmission fluid, would everything else apply to the 2010 4 cylinder manual transmission? Or they shouldn't need the bushing replaced upon changing the axle?
Can you show part number of bushing i just had my cvjoint axle insttalled and it started leaking from seal need part number i have a 2014 ford fusion se with a1.5 litre can stop leake this is my second attempt to correct problem for told me they don't make a bushing for that fusion car can u help
my husband has a 2012 ford fusion se & has transmission problems he has recently replaced the driver seal axle & transmission seal & it still jerks what else can be the problem?
Where can I get the install tool? I seem to be having some incredible difficulty locating a store that I can purchase it from.
Is the bushing and seal the same on the passenger side as it is on the drivers side?
no
Hey. Quick question. Do the ford edges have that same tranny 6F35 or are they all 6F50 or 6F55? Any way you can tell by the vin?
