Elliot, I remember when I was a kid, my dad bought a TOYOTA for 250k RMB in the early 90s, then a S500 for 2.5 millions in the late 90s, and cars like Camry still sold at more than 200k even in the 2010s. But look at them now, Porches has to lower their prices by 30%, Camry dropped to 140k and many don't even bother looking at it. What a great time for Chinese consumers, big thanks to all Chinese automakers and the government for lifting up this industry.

@@paulb1951Well first of all it will come to North America - Mexico, Jamaica etc. But longer term such vehicles will mean that US produced vehicles cannot be exported as they will be so far behind modern vehicles. Eventually the demand from consumers will result in this becoming an election issue. Paying $100,000 for a poorly engineered, poorly built vehicle when the whole world can buy better vehicles for $20,000 can't last. Also, according to the terms of USMCA, they can also be built in Mexico so if Trump/Harris block this they're putting the whole North American trade pact in danger as well, further harming US prosperity. Eventually one Chinese company will take the chance.

Xpeng Motors is proven to be very very durable, they are even better than old Toyota or Lexus! The new Toyota and Lexis because of technologies and excessively used rare buttons are now far less durable than they were before 2020. Lexus and even more Toyota had to reduce costs, as they lost a lot of money during the COVID-19 period. Honda and Nissan are now much better than them for quality, but for technologies Xpeng Motors (and Nio) are recognized as being much more serious and consider each little thing very accurately to spare any risk of wasting!

Yeah the price for Europe you calculated is what everyone expects - BUT sadly, even long before tariffs are even where discussed, all chinese manufacturers added about 100-120%% on top of the chinese price... Examples are the BYD Dolphin, in China around 15.000€, here in Europe it starts from 32000€ and this is what every single chinese car manufacturer is doing and why the cars are failing hard in Europe... Because they often more expensive than even European manufacters like VW, Opel, Peugeot and often even worse in range and charging, driving comfort etc.... And they don't have a service network yet - so why would anyone buy a chinese car right now.
I really hope XPeng and the others are changing their really bad first impression they are leaving right now in Europe and start to offer good pricing. At 25000€ this car would be great and sell like hot cake...
And before everyone starts yelling: "it's because of European tarrifs" - no it is not, they are just trying to milk European costumers, but we don't fall for this...

Most people especially in America dont buy a car to drive it until the wheels fall off so i don't know what people are commenting about when it comes to reliability. The most I've seen people do is own a car and sell it to buy a new one after 5 years or lease it so they don't have to worry about maintenance and repairs when the warranty expires. China is way ahead in battery tech than any Western or japanese or Korean car maker especially BYD, which actually started out as a battery company before becoming a car manufacturer. You buy chinese EVs, not chinese petrol or diesel cars because that's not their specialty.

It’s not to conclude these cars are not reliable but to indicate the world is changing, we no longer hold on to an antique car for 20 years, at least I prefer a new car when warranty expires and don’t care if a car can last 10/20 years or not.

How much a car costs doesn’t stop at the purchase price. In Australia car insurers are about to introduce a new set of parameters to use when calculating the cost of repairing EVs. It is expected that insurance premiums for EVs will increase substantially. With that in mind, calculating the total cost of ownership enables customers to see the real cost not just the purchase price.

    • @SWR112
      @SWR112 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Funnily enough UK EV insurance is coming down because they usually are parked at night plugged in secure. New EV’s are proving cheaper to repair and EV specialist repair centres are opening up. The price of the battery packs have fallen 33% in two years to replace and new measures and techniques mean they can check the battery if in a accident and pass it ok rather than a few years back they were scared to warranty a pack of in a bump. Manufacturers have lowered the price to replace the expensive camera systems to the repair centres. They also found out EV car theft wasn’t really a thing. One main member of a car theft gang keeping his identity secret said it all when he said they didn’t like EV’s that usually more difficult to steal and they would rather target ICE cars they can sell on easier and could even break for parts.

@@SWR112 Thanks for replying. I suspect one thing driving insurance premiums here is the problem with Tesla battery pack repairs. That is Tesla don’t repair battery packs. As yet there are no third party battery pack repairers. So Teslas are more likely to be written off. Incidentally Tesla EVs have been the top selling brand here for a few years. I would be glad to see insurance premiums come down but at present that is not likely, in the short term at least.

Cars like Xpeng is really great for sure. However, even I cannot "write off" Corollas that easily. They've been around for generations, years, decades and even centuries. They've been repetitively economical, easy to drive, spaciously enough and off course totally dependable. Sure electric motors can turn such tables but mind you Toyotas have numerous of highly dependable parts. Toyota's weakness is not being totally committed to EVs though there are few like BZ4X and in Japanese cities (probably a few) have C+ Pod.
All in all I would like to have a good Chinese EV over a Corolla but it's simply too early to say Corolla is done, way too early.

It's a bit silly to compare a car that has not stood the test of time yet with the Corolla, a name that has sold tens of millions, and has built a very strong reputation for quality and reliability, with decades old Corollas still running with no issues. I'm not saying the Xpeng doesn't have a chance, but quality takes time. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

What I was saying is that it's stupid to compare an established product that is almost synonymous with quality to a new product from a startup from a country that honestly and objectively doesn't really have the best track record when it comes to quality car manufacturing. You can't just assume that a new product will be of high quality just based on a first impression when the product is in mint condition.
Anyone who has access to this product can go out and buy it. I'm not saying they should all wait. Maybe it's high quality. Maybe it's not. It can all work well now, but will it work well after someone will have daily driven one of these cars for 10 years? 5 years? 3 years? Quality needs time to be proven. Can I trust a 30 years old Volvo? Yes. Because I know what to expect. I like shiny and futuristic things, but not everything shiny and futuristic is also good.

No thanks. Rather have a 10yr old Corolla.
At my age, I doubt I'd be able to buy an EV I could trust. The current batteries need to go and until new safer battery tech comes in, I'll always be at least 5 years away from a 2nd hand price I could afford.
Potentially my UK Gov. could put me off the road with the current crass 'everyone in EV's' timetable.
But then I maybe dead before that, as I was close to being run over by 2 EV's, both within 8 days of each other!
Even with the new added sound, they are almost silent still!
I was half in the wrong on the 1st one, slightly walking out into a supermarket car park, but did look right to see an EV and stopped 1 metre from being in his path way. He didn't see me and carried on at about 10mph (the car park limit).
The 2nd one, yesterday in a hospital car park, I was walking very slowly (feeling I'll) and had to cross a few tiny side roads.
I just remembered to look right/behind me when I got to a corner. The driver is supposed to toot their horn when it's that close, but he didn't. He just turned into the corner. Again he was at the allowed speed, but again, I couldn't hear the EV!!

The drive is not quite as good as a 3 SR, but it’s close. It can beat a BYD on a track by a mile. Efficiency is far better than BYD, Aion, about the same as Model 3. 30% bigger boot than Model 3. it is kinda hard to believe that they are that cheap... I suspect when it comes out of China to export markets it is either way more expensive as they are increasing quality for exports (as communists have always done) and local cars may not actually have all quality parts, or they are subsidized a lot... I dunno. Yes, I know China has cheaper workforce but lots of place where cars are being assembled have that, it is not just that. And materials and stuff cost money, they will not be free just cause they are from China.
