In 82, we were engaged to be married. That came in '83. In 2002, after 34 years together and almost 20 wonderful years of marriage, he passed. We did have it all.
I remember taking Vietnam refugees to thrift stores and walmart. (1982). This was on a school bus 50 passenger bus as a Sw'er. These were good times. Now, I have a stroke. I'm 68 years young. May GOD give me 35-45 more years so I can teach.
I was 19 with a full set of hair in 82......I still have a full set of hair and its still mostly black. Maybe its good music like this that has kept my youth. lol .
February 2025. I listen to this song all the time. I remember this being one of my dad's favorites, whether we were in the garage working on a woodworking project or on the boat at Bear Lake in southeast Idaho.

Greetings Bertie. I love this song. I played several times a day while on vacation in Key Largo. It was the perfect song to listen to in the morning, then at lunch , dinner & on the water watching the gorgeous Florida Keys sunsets on the sunset cruises. This song is a timeless classic that will new grow old. The African Queen boat docked in Key Largo has be repaired & renovated. Now it is able to sail again for couples cruises.
I was a South Florida resident when this song exploded. It was all over radio, both on Top-40 stations and adult-contemporary. 13 million youtube views says this song has some staying power!
I had just moved to Florida about the time this came out, and then it was followed by Miami Vice being a huge hit. Jimmy Buffett was still big at the time too, it reminded me a lot of his "Come Monday", kind of a similar laid back sound. Those early 80's seemed like such easy, breezy days compared to now. People weren't quite sure how to follow the excitement of the 70's, and everybody was just kind of laid back, letting the 80's settle into place, wondering what path things would take next. It felt like a great time to be in Florida and soaking up the tropical vibe on the beaches, and at the tiki bars and cocktail lounges ( remember the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?), it was the perfect atmosphere for it. This song was kind of one of the last of the songs that still had a 70's sound to it, after that it was all about the new wave and the British bands hitting it big. I will always love this song and thrilled to see so many others feel the same.

A long time ago, my Mother was sick and very anxious. I bought her a book about natural healing. It suggested listening to “Key Largo” to reduce stress, and it helped her calm down and stop worrying. I was living in South Florida in 1982 when this song was popular. I remember this playing on the radio of my 1980 Monte Carlo while driving to pick up a gorgeous blonde with green eyes and a smile that left me speechless that I had somehow talked into going out with me. She really was something. Still is, she's watching Netflix in our 'family room' right now, I married her in Miami in 1984. I smile whenever I hear this song.

This probably won’t be seen by anyone but my Grandma, who grew up in Tarpon Springs FL where Bertie grew up said she knew him fairly well. She told us he used to go over her house and hangout with her and her dad every so often. She got married and moved and forgot about him for a number of years till she said she heard him on the radio and couldn’t believe it! She is the reason I got to know his music! I always was so fascinated how she knew him! Anyways she’s passed away now and every time I hear this song I think of her❤️Miss her very much.

Bertie, I was the music director and midday DJ in South Carolina when Cat Family Records released this song. We played this thing in rotation even after MCA records wanted us to send it back because they were re-releasing it. The listeners were more important and they wanted to hear the song, sooo... we replaced the record when the newer release came in. I know how you feel. I was in love with a woman who was married with a child. She and her husband were in a tumultuous relationship that it is a matter of time it would end in a divorce. I tried to wait it out instead being a homewrecker. Then surprisingly, she had another child with her husband. I was in my early 30s and I thought perhaps I was wrong, their marriage would last. I decided it was time to look elsewhere I am not getting any younger. Soon I met another woman who would end up to be my wife. I gave a wedding invitation card to her, and she said she's planning to get a divorce. I couldn't leave my fiance. Soon she ended her marriage. With two children, she remarried to a wealthy man who was at least 18 years older than she was. This was over 20 years ago.

Bertie once supported himself as a sponge diver, and began his career in show business at the age of twelve as a ventriloquist. No wonder his voice is so unique as he would have built up lung capacity. He was also a drummer for Tommy Roe. So yes he had it all and made the most of it co-writing this song and making it one of the most memorable songs of all time. Once you hear it he hooks you like a Tarpon so that you have to keep playing it over and over again flooding you with memories of that special love you had and maybe lost and your life was never the same again.

I read in an interview with the lady in this video that she was directed to look unhappy in the video because their love was fading. But in reality, she was having a great time and wanted to smile, and some of that happiness still came through.

It was the perfect song to listen to in the morning, then at lunch , dinner & on the water watching the gorgeous Florida Keys sunsets on the sunset cruises. This song is a timeless classic that will new grow old. The African Queen boat docked in Key Largo has be repaired & renovated. Now it is able to sail again for couples cruises.

I was a South Florida resident when this song exploded. It was all over radio, both on Top-40 stations and adult-contemporary. 13 million youtube views says this song has some staying power!

I had just moved to Florida about the time this came out, and then it was followed by Miami Vice being a huge hit. Jimmy Buffett was still big at the time too, it reminded me a lot of his "Come Monday", kind of a similar laid back sound. Those early 80's seemed like such easy, breezy days compared to now. People weren't quite sure how to follow the excitement of the 70's, and everybody was just kind of laid back, letting the 80's settle into place, wondering what path things would take next. It felt like a great time to be in Florida and soaking up the tropical vibe on the beaches, and at the tiki bars and cocktail lounges ( remember the Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?), it was the perfect atmosphere for it. This song was kind of one of the last of the songs that still had a 70's sound to it, after that it was all about the new wave and the British bands hitting it big. I will always love this song and thrilled to see so many others feel the same.

I was living in South Florida in 1982 when this song was popular. I remember this playing on the radio of my 1980 Monte Carlo while driving to pick up a gorgeous blonde with green eyes and a smile that left me speechless that I had somehow talked into going out with me. She really was something. Still is, she's watching Netflix in our 'family room' right now, I married her in Miami in 1984. I smile whenever I hear this song.

This probably won’t be seen by anyone but my Grandma, who grew up in Tarpon Springs FL where Bertie grew up said she knew him fairly well. She told us he used to go over her house and hangout with her and her dad every so often. She got married and moved and forgot about him for a number of years till she said she heard him on the radio and couldn’t believe it! She is the reason I got to know his music! I always was so fascinated how she knew him! Anyways she’s passed away now and every time I hear this song I think of her❤️Miss her very much.

Bertie, I was the music director and midday DJ in South Carolina when Cat Family Records released this song. We played this thing in rotation even after MCA records wanted us to send it back because they were re-releasing it. The listeners were more important and they wanted to hear the song, sooo... we replaced the record when the newer release came in. Years later and living on Amelia Island Florida, you and your band came and played at the Shrimp Festival. Great memories, man. Thank you.

I know how you feel. I was in love with a woman who was married with a child. She and her husband were in a tumultuous relationship that it is a matter of time it would end in a divorce. I tried to wait it out instead being a homewrecker. Then surprisingly, she had another child with her husband. I was in my early 30s and I thought perhaps I was wrong, their marriage would last. I decided it was time to look elsewhere I am not getting any younger. Soon I met another woman who would end up to be my wife. I gave a wedding invitation card to her, and she said she's planning to get a divorce. I couldn't leave my fiance. Soon she ended her marriage. With two children, she remarried to a wealthy man who was at least 18 years older than she was. This was over 20 years ago.
My uncle did that. Married someone other than his 1st and greatest true love. Weird. (Only jokin'! 🤔Still puzzling tho').

Legendary is questionable, but, yeah, this song has been drifting in and out of my consciousness for a few days now.
Bertie once supported himself as a sponge diver, and began his career in show business at the age of twelve as a ventriloquist. No wonder his voice is so unique as he would have built up lung capacity. He was also a drummer for Tommy Roe. So yes he had it all and made the most of it co-writing this song and making it one of the most memorable songs of all time. Once you hear it he hooks you like a Tarpon so that you have to keep playing it over and over again flooding you with memories of that special love you had and maybe lost and your life was never the same again.
I had it all once, and then it was all taken away... 30 + years later... my heart is still broken... What a blessing it is when you have love, enduring love...

I read in an interview with the lady in this video that she was directed to look unhappy in the video because their love was fading. But in reality, she was having a great time and wanted to smile, and some of that happiness still came through.
