  • How To Build Mixed Voice | Mixed Voice Exercises | Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
I personally believe that "Mixed Voice" may be one of the most
misunderstood and elusive concepts in singing.
    And here's why:
Coaches love to use buzz words and fancy phrases about singing to make themselves look like they know what they are talking about.
    I'm not kidding.
It's called "Tribal Knowledge / Job Security."
Do you know what a funny explanation is for an expert?
Someone that knows a "little" more than you.
This way they can wow you with "bafflegab."
But have you really looked closely to see if these self proclaimed
experts have truly apprehended the concepts and methods they teach, demonstrating first with their own voices and then with other students proving out what they teach?
This is actually a major reason I started KTVA.
In all my years of singing, touring, recording and teaching, I cannot
tell you how frustrating this was for me.
I have studied under the world's greatest vocal coaches and most of
them had conflicting and or very incomplete information. Few of them could actually sing (and even if they did, was it something I wanted to sound like?)
So at KTVA, I go out of my way to show you what is legit and what
isn't, with a view towards helping you get past all the bafflegab and
    get straight to great singing.
    With that said:
In this video, I discuss "Mixed Voice."
    What is it?
    How do you get it?
    How do you apply it?
I demonstrate it (not just in this video but many others on my youtube
channel and in my singing course).
Getting to mixed voice is a process.
You must build it in stages.
    AND
It MUST be consistent with building the rest of your voice correctly.
After you have established the strong building blocks for singing:
    1) Support
    2) Upper torso relaxation response
    3) Open throat technique
    4) Breath control
    5) Building chest voice
    6) Building head voice
    7) Building the passaggio bridge
THEN you can start to "mix" between your chest and head registers.
This folks is the correct and only way to build healthy long lasting mixed voice. (I cover all of this in my singing course)
I hope you find this free tutorial helpful and I look forward to great
    singing with you!

Hey Ken, how is it going? In some of your videos you were calling the high notes of Operatic Tenors "belted chest voice" but they were actually using mixed voice like every other singer. No men can sing higher than their Primo Passaggio in chest voice, which for Tenors is around B3-E4. What you call pulled chest voice is simply a yelly mixed voice. No singer uses chest voice in their high notes, chest voice is a term used for low notes. Please answer if I am wrong.

Ken, it seems that learning to be a musician is a lot like exercising where you have to be disciplined and put the time and work in to see the results. When I was young, I began teaching myself to play the guitar. To become faster and faster on the guitar, I have had to keep building strength in my fingers and forearms playing scales endlessly and guitar solos endlessly and doing exercises as well as learning chords and getting better and better at moving from chord to chord and then learning to play in tempo along with songs. No matter how much we know as musicians there is always more to learn. I used to have to buy the sheet music and the C.D. or tape or record to learn a song where as now the music is all free on the internet. Thanks to Eddie Van Halen for the invention of guitar tabs or I never would have been able to read guitar music or learn anything. You are proficient as a musician and singer and are extremely honest. Ads by other vocal coaches who promise people they can be great singers in thirty days is such a scam. Life is tough. Brutally tough and nothing is for free. We have to do the work. Ken, we are all extremely fortunate to have you as our vocal coach (we are learning from the best) and that you share so much of your knowledge with all of us. Thanks for all the outstanding lessons and videos.

I think I finally found my mix last summer after almost 14 years of singing, but I'm not sure. It feels like the sound it goes into my head but my chest is still engaging somewhat and adding weight to it. I've tested it against my head voice and it feels and sounds a lot different. I'm a bass so the possibility of hitting those notes I always envied (A4 and up, my current "mix" likes to rest at about the Bb) is super exciting!

Did Chris Cornell sing with mixed voice?
I've been singing for more than 10 years, but without sing lessons, so, even though I'm more "competent" than people who just started singing recently, I still feel like I'm not as competent as I should be considering the years I've sang, and that includes not being able to sing in mixed voice.
I get so frustrated because Chris was capable of hitting F5 effortlessly and I can barely get past D5! (with chest voice, and it's painful)

Hi Ken, I have troubles singing in mixed voice when it comes to vowels I, E, and U. Although I could easily sing mixed using vowels A and O (I could go all the way up to C5 using these vowels easily). My passagio is at F#4, and the song requires me to hit A4 in an U and E vowel which I have troubles hitting. I tried modifying the vowel to an AH and AE to compensate for it, but it isnt exactly the sound I am aiming for. How could I improve my mixed voice so that I could hit those notes in those vowels? Is there any particular exercise?

I can't hit high notes like this in morning .
I have to eat before and drink , and talk a bit and sing a bit .
When i did a very heavy vocals session in swizterland , i wake up well , i eat , drink breakfeast , i go to the studio walking to the studio with nobody in the " village" just the sun , the snow and fresh air , and doing warm up things , normal things , sang 4 songs of a 1978 Whitesnake bootleg i have in headphones , to wake up gravel , a bit power , support to be well prepared without beign too high ( it was raw , more balanced then , unlike 1987 and slip of the tongue ) , then i Shut up .
      I drank 2 teas .
      Then we started .
Also , in that stuff , get well the melodies even i had very strong agressive stuff , and be judicious , especially with a Mutt lange kind of producer that even you did well , that push you into hours of takes , so not be out of your register too often , because 2 hours straight you can be flat and not hitting something that well , especially 5th octave mixed screams .
      Have a reserve .
I did 4 hours takes straight with 30 min pause . Extreme stuff but with a 70's basis technique but pushed.
And i did a good job...
And i surprised the producer that i could speak normally after unlike guys like Lamb of god guys he recorded and stuff he did after a day of take ( i have not the same technique by the way ) .
The next day i just shut up the entire day , and drink water , tea and not eat any pimented stuff like my collegues at restaurant .
The day after , i did a similar thing and i warm up a bit longer , because i was hitting higher register notes in the old way .
I am very chesty and use high larynx stuff ... i had the high notes .

Been singin about a year. Lots of videos on my page. I’ve got a really deep voice, that seems to come with 100 various tones. A lot of times I find myself struggling to find them when I need them. Sometimes it literally feels like I Can’t repeat the same sounds. My voice and it’s tones seem to change so much from day to day and it’s driving me nuts. Any suggestions? Hate sounding great one day and horrible the next. One day I can vibrate your chair with a G#1 and the next struggle to even get a decent tone on a B1. My comfortable range is B1-B3

I have a lot of different exrecise but i still coudn't find my mix but i have a powerful chest tone and i am a base type, my problem is i can't hit a highnote if the pronouncuation of the word involves "right vowel" like "thing", "pra", "wi" and so many. I can only belt in a way of shouting with loud tone volume in pure chest register.
I can't sing all high songs of air supply maybe because it needs mixing? to reach high notes like changing the key?

Ken, with you it's like magic. The way you use your eyes to teach is very helpful. Before I saw your videos I was so frustrated. As a karaoke singer I was baffled how to increase my range, and I was shocked when I heard the answer: I needed to open my throat to sing higher. As someone who has worked in the sciences, I thought shrinking the opening in my throat would enable me to sing higher, just based on physics. I'd go to sing, and I'd come home with mild pain in my throat for each time I tried to sing a little higher, but as the years went by I was never able to add a single note to my range. Thanks for this lesson. You are a very good teacher.

It's been a month since a start to practice this and I think a got it. Just wondering, at one point the mixed voice really sounds like a falsetto (more than a chest voice), I guess it's normal (seems logical) but is there a way to change that so it sounds more like a chest voice ? Power ? Volume ? I don't get that x)

Hey Ken! So I can do the sliders at a fairly low volume smoothly across my passagio, but what I'm having trouble with is both a.) singing falsetto/head voice without straining, and b.) using compression at low volumes to make my falsetto less breathy. If I go really high, I can sound fairly clean, but once I get into my passagio or chest voice, my voice becomes extremely breathy at low volumes. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? Thank you.

I'm a high Baritone/low Tenor and I've tried to stretch my chest voice with the straw vocal exercise... and it actually worked...! I could sing 6 or 7 notes higher than I'd been able to sing beforehand, which was the highest Tenor note (with my chest voice), but I felt a lot of strain when I did this, and even though I can hit the highest Tenor note more comfortably, now, I still don't feel that comfortable hitting higher notes with my chest voice. But if I want to go from my chest to head voice, I usually need 2 or 3 chest voice notes to match the note in which my chest voice usually flipps into head voice... And when I try to sing the lowest note I can, with my head voice/falsetto, I always start feeling resonance in my chest as I get lower, but my voice/falsetto usually breaks at E3, and flips into chest voice at C3, usually.
I've been trying to do (at least) one good slider (mostly from chest to head voice) for over a month now... But to no avail, apparently. So... I'm pretty sure that I could say that I've seen no results, yet...
Can someone please give me advice, based on experience or knowledge?

So you mentioned that we have a speaking register, a call register and a head voice (reinforced falsetto) register. Then you also mentioned that mix voice is a mix of chest and head that varies in percentage as you go through the appropriate range. So if my understanding is correct the call register and mix voice seem to occupy the same area of the voice. Is mix voice something we use instead of the call register to get a lighter sound?
I guess my underlying question is what is the difference between the call register and mix voice?
