Good mixed voice is a combination of both forward placement and vocal space down and back. It is also about letting go (let that larynx relax) to let your voice to go where it needs to go and just grow to fill the void of your natural resonating chambers. This is an excellent tutorial.
I did many weird sounds when I was a kid just for fun and by revisiting those sounds as an adult I am developing my head voice, mixed voice, raspy sound, vibrato, melismas and even screams. It's like we all have all the tools inside us but we just don't know until someone else tell us
@@semu8030 This is SO true. We all the same basic anatomy... the same tools.. Some of us learn how to utilize some of the tools all by ourselves... MOST people need to be shown how to use them! Nothing wrong with that either!
@@chrisliepe oh of course not, most of the stuff I've learned was by watching your videos and listening the isolated vocals of certain songs (many of them in your channel as well) and you already know but it's magic what you do, the way you teach. It's not about learning new techniques, but playing with what you can do and let your voice evolve naturally
Awesome video. Clear instructions. My trouble with fry was hearing a singing judge call it inauthentic. Never knew I'd internalise the statement and have since then avoided fry. But glad you've broken the myth.
All judges suck haha... I know first hand how toxic the mindless opinions of those put in positions to 'judge' are! Those judges should stop judging and just sing or do something else that provides value to other's lives.
Loved your videos since I first saw them. Through your work I've started to learn support, and this playful method of starting with the physical is unlike any other teaching style I've seen.
Again I get stuck and discouraged on this journey and without missing a beat, Chris puts out another insightful video that covers the exact thing I am most frustrated about. Thanks so much for these perfectly timed slivers of hope, man! Wishing you the best!
You sound like a mix of Klaus Meine and Freddie Mercury at 6:02! 😮Klaus Meine is the main singer in a music group called Scorpions. 😄 Thank you for these videos, Chris. They are really fun and helpful to many, including me. You're doing great work! ☺
I love your channel Chris, it's the best thing that's ever happened to my voice! I tried a lot of different vocal coaches and made a little progress. I kind of gave up on singing for long a while. But when I found your channel a little more than a year ago piece after piece locked into place. I never thought I could learn to scream but after 9 months of practicing making weird noises (mostly while driving) I found my false chord scream 😄! A couple of months of weird falsetto noises later and now I can find my mixed voice. Currently I'm working on my compression and I'm having so much fun with it. Sorry but my wife hates you, but that'll probably go away after I write her a couple of songs 😅. This is probably not the right place to write this. But I kust wanted to take a chance and hopefully this will reach you. I wanted to tell you that I started dreaming of being able to express myself through my voice since I was 16 and now I'm finally on my way to unlocking it! And it's in huge huge part thanks to your course and your TH-cam channel. I can never thank you enough!!
Omg I've been missing your videos cause I wasn't getting notified I checked in to see what was happening I'm so sorry Chris happy to be back though thank you man much love and a merry Christmas 👍👍
HOLY FRICKING SHI- THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO MUCH WITH YOUR CHANNEL I LITERALLY CAN BE ABLE TO DEVELOP MY MIX VOICE. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! long time ago, i have heard about mix voice and find it super incredible but i really have no interest in finding it, but until one day i am trying to learning this particular song that seems i cant reach the high note except going to falsetto/head voice which sounds BAD because that i dont have a thick loud head voice as thick as literally the PREVIOUS note of my belting chest, until i notice that the original singer uses mixed voice??? i was doubting that he uses it because it doesn't sound really like any difference with the chest, and the fact that the singer is a tenor and i'm a baritone just confirmed the fact even further PLUS there aren't any analysis video on that song i learn because tbh song analysis are rarely made except for those very famous high belting songs.... with no other option i really have to learn mix voice go surfing all over youtube and starting to notice that the singer is probably using mixed voice, which motivates me to even learning mixed voice, i tried searching on youtube and start clicking these videos at the top seatches, look at their channels, but it's just something missing, once i thought i achieved the mixed voice but then i started thinking "if this is mixed voice, then how would be my falsetto be in this note?" and turns out that i was using falsetto but in a louder volume.... i started getting sad and unmotivated that time but then i realized I HAVE TO SING THIS SONG. so i HAVE TO search another video but only being stuck with all of these same yt channels til i found yours.... and the answer to it was VOCAL FRY..... which is something easy for me, because it's literally like what it is it's a register "everyone has", and i really really really really thank YOU so much for giving all of these videos on the internet... LIKE THANK YOU. how can your video didnt show up when i searched about this. THIS IS INCREDIBLY USEFUL well now i have like a half-good control of my mixed voice, i often crack, but practice makes perfect, i'll probably will be able to hit that high note one day...... but with mix of course, not chest :)
@@chrisliepe I can't stress this enough. I'v been experimenting the past years so much with voice placement and how to approach tone, and also how to control high notes. And it was always hit miss, and what you said in this video is Exactly what I was looking for. This single video was more valuable for my voice then all I researched and tried the past years. And that was a lot. The moment I moved my larynx down while doing the high vocal fry I felt instantly that it's what I'm been looking for all this time. Complete game changer, breakthrough. For me at least.
That feels comfortable right off the bat , thank you Coach and may I say the comedic aspect of your video's is otherworldly ( I literally sing "I've been searchin " out of the blue sometimes ) because it seems so unintentional . Cheers !
Nice tip! I think it's good to keep in mind the fry is just a vocal means to the end of reducing unwanted tension. If you want to actually pop at the beginning of a musical line, that's cool, but it aint required by any means! Operatic tenors and baritones have been singing with 'cry' for hundreds of years without a fry sound.
Thank you for these videos, Chris! Mixed is such a tricky vocal technique to master and it's so nice to have these different angles to analyze it from to try and get better at it!
I'm sitting here and laughing so hard. Love your video, and I totally agree with you😁...I have a problem with the word "me" in my Mix Voice. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not. I have singing lessons with a Nashville coach, and she uses fry a lot. She taught me that for the first time.
Wow, what a great tip! Dude, I don't think I've seen you talk about this singer, but MAN do you sound like Robert Plant on a few of those notes. Particularly Bar 199, I was like - Woh! That's Led Zepplin!
You know Chris Bro! I discovered something on stage man. You can be as practiced and have all the techniques. Even get your song spot on. However, I found if i forget all that on stage. Have my interpretation to what the feel and the groove is of the song. Then just cut sick, It is kind being vulnerable, In that i find that at times i will miss a line or feel like i totally fd up cause i got lost in the song. To be clear this not inappropriate in anyway. But i found another 50% of the audience, and the look on peoples face is priceless. But what is trully valuable is this crazy freedom you can have in performance. So cool too, when I can just rock on stage and I am so relaxed chilled. Merry Christmas Bro!
Loving these videos as I'm more concerned about technique than I am specific notes. I can fix that on my own and most vocal coaches just give analogies instead of a way to get there. Would love to see some stranger vocalist like the guys from the Mars Volta, closure in Moscow and Opeth (specifically the growls from them). Thank you so much for rekindling my passion to try again. I really need this to add vocals to my tracks.
Think i just solved it.. the problem i find is people describe having an open mouth, big spaces, but it actually feels incredibly narrow and tight, and also very little air push. Feel almost like i am pressing the sound out.. learning to sing is sooo hard😂 love these videos tho
YOU. Are seriously a wizard. I've been struggling so much with high grit and 5 minutes into the video I got it. You are the freaking Mr. Myagi of voice
I love your channel man free coaching, i actually learned how to use my mix by a rockstar from journey arnel pineda, because he sings open vowels and i was trying to imtate it, now when i sing i can belt with ease and no sore throat even i sing for 3hrs.
My vocal coach told me my passaggio/break is almost like a hole in my voice right now for those couple notes. Really need to nail down mixed voice for it I think
thanks Chris, will definitely try this out soon (it's like 2am at the time of writing this comment. don't wanna wake my parents and neighbors lmao). quick question tho, is there a better way to like, know if your airflow, compression, support is balanced? or if it is enough or is it too much? what happens to me recently is when I try to sing, it feels perfectly fine, but I'll only realize i'm compressing or pushing too much air far too late and I can already feel the fatigue. happens so much more when I'm with friends singing karaoke. 2 challenging songs in and my voice already gave up. but of course, I guess just lack of practice or not enough warmups or bad warmups, but I hope you shed a bit of light into this. btw, really love your videos, only videos on yt that really helped me finally sing the songs I've always wanted to sing and is making me love my voice day by day.
I have a whole free course on it :) !! check it out at mymusicalvoice.com :) It's called "7 highly effective exercises that won't annoy your neighbors!"
Hi Chris, could you please tell me what microphone you prefer for recording of vocals with distortion? Or what are you favorite microphones for the recording of vocals? Thanks!
@@chrisliepe I found myself listening to your cover of bang bang, and at the 2:20 mark I hear you sing the lyrics "you need a bad girl to blow your mind!" and its so powerful its a strong mix! that what Id love to, I get so excited when I hear people hit those notes, always get chills
What does "bringing resonance or placement back" mean? I've heard a lot of people using this term, but I haven't heard a clear explanation on how to actually do it.
One of my kids once asked my best tip for learning to sing and I just came out with ' er..imitate Chris from Family Guy (as well as Liepe) and then you'll be able to sing' ! This video kinda backs that up I reckon, well a bit anyway!
I can make some ridiculous sounds trying these different things in your videos, but never seem to relate it to anything close to mixed voice. I can never keep my throat feeling anything like low pitched fry when going higher pitched. I make my voice sound brighter and edgier in a rather non-musical way, but not much else. I certainly can't do any of it outside the range of my chest voice. Puzzling.
I've been messing around with imitating 'Meatwad" from Aqua Teen Hunger force. It's hard to duplicate, but I believe there is something there advantageous...
Also after a couple of days of experimenting with this approach I'm noticing I'm getting a lot easier access to my upper range but it feels very unique. It's not strained but it's not tension free either, it feels like I'm squeaking notes out like a balloon. I was wondering if that is correct?
The tricky part for me is still wondering if Im taping into the fry part of it. Like If I try to add compression to my voice, kinda slow it down a bit, relax it, the compression sounds like fry to me, but is it? and is this the type of sound we are trying to add to the mix or is it something else? this is the best I can voice if what im doing is fry
Very much so! I'm not tense here at all... There is an intensity about what I'm doing, but it's not tension. Join my free course linked in the video description to learn how to support properly so you can do these things without being tense!
YES! Stop 'trying' to hit higher notes and experiment with resonance and placement primarily. ...Like I show in this video. The high notes will come if you put placement and resonance first. I can help you do this in my courses as well!
For some reason my voice gets super compressed in my throat and ends up hurting, even though I can now go higher than ever! Not sure if I need to drop my larynx or what. Any way to fix?
