A lot of my reading since then has been in areas like strategic intelligence, history, media studies, economics, geopolitics, literature(William Gibson, Grahame Greene, Don DeLillo, Gore Vidal, etc.) security studies and grand strategy. It's never too late and universities have all kinds of programs like "life-long learners" etc where you can still apply to get a new degree or be non-degree seeking. You can also do self-study or a lot of universities may even have local partnerships where they are offering classes in partnership with like local libraries or something like that
Great video! I just enrolled at AMU for Political Science and this was helpful. I do have two suggestions for newbies. The first would be People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn. I wouldn’t have even blinked at politics without it! The other would be a substitute for the Communist Manifesto as that’s kind of dense for someone knew to theory, and I’d suggest Principles of Communism by Engles. But that’s just me, smaller and it’s easier to digest.
If I had to add a book to this, it would be freakonomics by Levitt and dubner. I'm in the 11th grade and after reading this book, it has changed my view points on American politics. Highly recommend.
The Communist Manifesto alone is sufficient at setting the world stage, I think. As most states expand laws, restrict freedom all governing leans to, and leads collective ownership. 'Empire' is more a retelling of The Manifesto skewed in praise of Marx, less in a unbiased governing theory which The Manifesto covers. Having said that, it does give insight to neo-communist's and their view of the world stage so far needing to progress toward a (Lets hope I don't trigger crazies) new world order, of sorts. To each their own, just a second readers take.
@@dralel1381 The Communist Manifesto says almost nothing regarding international relations in comparison with Empire and a book from the 19th century is hardly sufficient at setting the world stage today. Hardt and Negri's other works, Multitude, Commonwealth and Assembly hugely expand on their Empire theory which is so much more than a simple praise of Marx. Absolute works of genius.

An odyssey through America over the course of several decades, while focusing on the evolution of different parts of society. An eye opener on the "American Dream".
Goodness, I don't even remember. I think he said Mein Kampf....which again, is a useful test in the study of political science from a foreign policy analysis standpoint.

I think pretty much all of these should be readily avialable on Amazon and some are trade publications you can usually find in regular bookstores, like a Barnes and Noble in the US. For international buyers, I'd check amazon or just google the title.

I recommend it too. I also highly recommend Aristotle's _The Politics_ , and I strongly prefer the translation by Sir Ernest Barker. I was amazed at how relevant it still is to our own age.

There are so many good books on politics of developing countries. I actually teach this as a class. The three books I used last semester were Dead Aid (Moyo), The Bottom Billion (Collier) and Challenges of the Developing World (9th edition) by Howard Handelman and Rex Brynen (2019).

Hi Dr. Maiden, I plan on double majoring in PoliSci and Economics with a minor in Communications. Would you say this is a valid choice, with all honesty please 😂? I've been told Econ is extremely difficult and shouldn't be double majored if I am to double major at all. I know I am definitely going for some type of PoliSci/Govt degree, but I really don't know what else to get with with even as a minor! Please help! 😭
These should all go together perfectly well. There will be quite a bit of overlap in elective options across those three concentrations. The key to stacking majors and minors is that you've got to plan ahead. To fit it all in, you've really got to think about building your course schedule in advance. Know where/how all the required courses for each program will fit. You'll need to be thinking of things like prerequisites. Very likely, you'll have to take some of your econ classes in a specific sequence. Even some of your polic sci classes can sometimes expect that you've had a micro or macro econ class first. If you're worrie about the workload for econ, you could always start with Econ as your major and poli sci as your minor. When you're comfortable with econ, you can move poli sci up to a major. But plan as if poli sci is going to be your major until its not. Does that make sense?
I have one thing to remark although I love Orwell I really think there is a book that beats 1984 easily when it come to dystopian world I really believe brand new world by Huxley is more suited for how our world turned out.

It's not for everyone, but in terms of authoritarianism, doublespeak, alternative facts, and the insidious ways in which people go alone with the erasure of their rights, its a good foil for something like More's Utopia.

You need to look at the admission requirements for the programs you're looking for. In most cases, you need an undergraduate degree in a related discipline before you pursue master's level work. You'll also most likely need to take the GRE for U.S. programs. In most cases I would find it highly unlikely you could apply and get into a Master's program in IR without a completed undergraduate degree in a related discipline, ideally political science, international studies/affairs, or something similar. "Why Nations Fail," I've read it, it is popular but in my assessment just so-so. The authors seem blind to the counter arguments that can be made against their position, so I do not find it convincing. I recommend these 7 books instead: The Bad Samaritans - a history of developmental economics How Asia Works - case studies in developmental economics How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor - a theory of developmental economics The Revenge of Geography -- a sweeping survey on the classic literature of how geography to a large degree determines economic development and geostrategic military advantage; basically, a theory about limits imposed by nature and the accidents of history IQ and the Wealthy of Nations -- another book about limits; I know it's depressing, but it has to be confronted. If there are biological limits on the ability of public policy to lift nations out of poverty, then we should know that. Essay on the Principle of Population (Malthus, I prefer the 6th edition which represents his maturest and fullest reflection on the subject; the industrial revolution, powered by fossil fuels, has caused his theory to fall out of fashion, but the first Siberians who wandered into the peopleless wilderness of North and South America may have thought for a while that they too had escaped the limits imposed by nature) Limits to Growth (still unrefuted, the next 50 years will tell us whether the the late Jay "father of system dynamics" Forrester's World3 computer model is right or not; if it is, 2020 to 2070 should turn into a dystopian nightmare, because we have been tracking the model's "business as usual" scenario pretty closely, which is dismayingly supportive evidence for the essential correctness of this seemingly robust model)
I'm not a big Ayn Rand fan myself, but there's plenty of works you could use as a foil to Marxism. It really emerged as a reaction to Liberalism/capitalism. So if you're a fan of international relations, anything in the field of Liberalism or political economy focusing on the spread/benefits of neoliberal capitalism would be a good foil. I can come up wit a list of titles. Most of what I use in classes for beginners is textbooks that compile original sources!
These books are great for indoctrinating political science students into being a good leftist. You forgot Das Kapital by Karl Marx a nice long boring read if you have trouble sleeping at night. I also recommend Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant, the guy responsible for influencing philosophy, along with Hegel, toward that utopia you speak about, socialism aka communism, and all of the other evil socialist ideologies like fascism and Nazism. One essential book you really should include is The Prince by Machiavelli, the father of modern political science, which teaches power politics and real politik. Every political leader has a copy of this book. Another good book is The History of Political Philosophy by Leo Strauss. Students need to study political philosophy from Plato to today. They need to understand just how screwed up these guys were and how there is always a flaw in every philosophy and ideology. And finally I think another one is Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand by Leonard Peikoff. Also it's important to study the documents that or nation was founded on, The US Constitution, The Declaration of Independence, The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, The Federalist Papers, and Anti-Federalist Papers. Throw in some Thomas Paine, like The Age of Reason and Common Sense and I think you have a pretty good foundation for political science. There are a lot more books, but these good starters. They teach the student about limited government, something our politics needs desperately. I know it's a bit too conservative for most Wokies, but we have way to many people trying to social engineer the world into that dystopia in 1984, btw that's a good one to keep on the list. It's where we are heading.
I always tend to think about left/right debates as purely subjetive. It's all a matter of personal perspective. What may feel "left" to one person can feel "center" to another. As to this particular list, quite a few are general methods books. Some are works of literature. And keep in mind this is one person's list. You could ask another political scientist for their list and get a completely different set of texts. These were highly influential to me and informed the way I think about political science.
You are very confused. I find that teachers with advanced degrees are not all that advanced. If you are a political science major, you need to know the American system of government. You need to read the Philadelphia Convention notes and the state convention ratification notes. You need a class in originalism. I suggest Brion McClanahan's constitution class on the McClanahan Academy which is on line. Best money you will ever spend. He sticks to the primary documents like glue. University professor's typically learn from establishment text books. Powerful tax free foundations give billions to universities and as a result political science, economics, and history have become agenda based. This means you have been trained or indoctrinated in tax free foundation viewpoints which benefit a small group of people. You need to learn about the 1952 Reece Committee congressional investigation on how education was changed by tax free foundations to get Americans to accept collectivism. You also need to read Adam Smith's "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations." Economics, history and government go hand in hand. Otherwise you get theory which is not new but has already been tried. McClanahan will give a good understanding of the Anglo-American political tradition.
I think it depends on one's individual positionality. Depending on how right-leaning one's views, anything--no matter how conservative--will be seen as left-leaning.

I'd be happy to learn more about Marxism and the like but only to debate accurately against it . Do you think this type of debate is tolerable in today's education system ? Most of your books you suggested appear to be more left leaning in nature and I just want to clarify your position on the matter .
@@freedombro I can give an example from a current course I teach: Intro to IR. I teach a host of theories of IR, which all provide different theoretical perspectives on the nature of the international system, anarchy, and cooperation. I typically go over Realism, Liberalism (not the same as Liberal/Conservative liberalism at all), Marxism, Social Constructivism, Foreign policy analysis, post-colonialism, and IR feminism. These are all wide-ranging theories that trace back to as early as Thucydides. Some might strike a student as being very liberal in the sense of liberal/conservative while others might be more conservative. Still others exist in an interesting space outside of liberal/conservative...they're just an interesting way of viewing the world or a critical way of analyzing human behavior. No labels needed. I always encourage debate in my courses. Of course, not all professors are the same.
As an aside, I can say my students typically really enjoy the lecture I do on Marxism. So much so that it often comes up in my performance reviews each semester. I only have an hour and fifteen minutes to work with, but I provide a nuanced look at the theory in terms of classical Marxism as well as the expansion of Marx's theory by scholars like Wallerstein, who developed world systems theory. It's a useful foil for understanding Realism and Liberalism, just as they are useful foils to use against Marxism. All the theories work in coordination with each other to make a complicated web of social history.

I recommend it too. I also highly recommend Aristotle's _The Politics_ , and I strongly prefer the translation by Sir Ernest Barker. I was amazed at how relevant it still is to our own age.

At the moment, I’m in iran and I have books about this topic written by iranian professors but I want to read this topic in english books too because unfortunately the translation of social science is very weak in iran generally and it’s more confusing and baffling rather than informative.

There are so many good books on politics of developing countries. I actually teach this as a class. The three books I used last semester were Dead Aid (Moyo), The Bottom Billion (Collier) and Challenges of the Developing World (9th edition) by Howard Handelman and Rex Brynen (2019).

Hi Dr. Maiden, I plan on double majoring in PoliSci and Economics with a minor in Communications. Would you say this is a valid choice, with all honesty please 😂? I've been told Econ is extremely difficult and shouldn't be double majored if I am to double major at all. I know I am definitely going for some type of PoliSci/Govt degree, but I really don't know what else to get with with even as a minor! Please help! 😭
These should all go together perfectly well. There will be quite a bit of overlap in elective options across those three concentrations. The key to stacking majors and minors is that you've got to plan ahead. To fit it all in, you've really got to think about building your course schedule in advance. Know where/how all the required courses for each program will fit. You'll need to be thinking of things like prerequisites. Very likely, you'll have to take some of your econ classes in a specific sequence. Even some of your polic sci classes can sometimes expect that you've had a micro or macro econ class first. If you're worrie about the workload for econ, you could always start with Econ as your major and poli sci as your minor. When you're comfortable with econ, you can move poli sci up to a major. But plan as if poli sci is going to be your major until its not. Does that make sense?

I have one thing to remark although I love Orwell I really think there is a book that beats 1984 easily when it come to dystopian world I really believe brand new world by Huxley is more suited for how our world turned out.

It's not for everyone, but in terms of authoritarianism, doublespeak, alternative facts, and the insidious ways in which people go alone with the erasure of their rights, its a good foil for something like More's Utopia.

You need to look at the admission requirements for the programs you're looking for. In most cases, you need an undergraduate degree in a related discipline before you pursue master's level work. You'll also most likely need to take the GRE for U.S. programs. In most cases I would find it highly unlikely you could apply and get into a Master's program in IR without a completed undergraduate degree in a related discipline, ideally political science, international studies/affairs, or something similar. "Why Nations Fail," I've read it, it is popular but in my assessment just so-so. The authors seem blind to the counter arguments that can be made against their position, so I do not find it convincing. I recommend these 7 books instead:
The Bad Samaritans - a history of developmental economics
How Asia Works - case studies in developmental economics
How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor - a theory of developmental economics
The Revenge of Geography -- a sweeping survey on the classic literature of how geography to a large degree determines economic development and geostrategic military advantage; basically, a theory about limits imposed by nature and the accidents of history
IQ and the Wealthy of Nations -- another book about limits; I know it's depressing, but it has to be confronted. If there are biological limits on the ability of public policy to lift nations out of poverty, then we should know that.
Essay on the Principle of Population (Malthus, I prefer the 6th edition which represents his maturest and fullest reflection on the subject; the industrial revolution, powered by fossil fuels, has caused his theory to fall out of fashion, but the first Siberians who wandered into the peopleless wilderness of North and South America may have thought for a while that they too had escaped the limits imposed by nature)
Limits to Growth (still unrefuted, the next 50 years will tell us whether the the late Jay "father of system dynamics" Forrester's World3 computer model is right or not; if it is, 2020 to 2070 should turn into a dystopian nightmare, because we have been tracking the model's "business as usual" scenario pretty closely, which is dismayingly supportive evidence for the essential correctness of this seemingly robust model)

Communist manifesto is a theorized manifesto, Ayn Rand wrote novels. To get a different perspective I’d suggest the law by Bastiat

I'm not a big Ayn Rand fan myself, but there's plenty of works you could use as a foil to Marxism. It really emerged as a reaction to Liberalism/capitalism. So if you're a fan of international relations, anything in the field of Liberalism or political economy focusing on the spread/benefits of neoliberal capitalism would be a good foil. I can come up wit a list of titles. Most of what I use in classes for beginners is textbooks that compile original sources!

These books are great for indoctrinating political science students into being a good leftist. You forgot Das Kapital by Karl Marx a nice long boring read if you have trouble sleeping at night. I also recommend Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant, the guy responsible for influencing philosophy, along with Hegel, toward that utopia you speak about, socialism aka communism, and all of the other evil socialist ideologies like fascism and Nazism. One essential book you really should include is The Prince by Machiavelli, the father of modern political science, which teaches power politics and real politik. Every political leader has a copy of this book. Another good book is The History of Political Philosophy by Leo Strauss. Students need to study political philosophy from Plato to today. They need to understand just how screwed up these guys were and how there is always a flaw in every philosophy and ideology. And finally I think another one is Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand by Leonard Peikoff. Also it's important to study the documents that or nation was founded on, The US Constitution, The Declaration of Independence, The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, The Federalist Papers, and Anti-Federalist Papers. Throw in some Thomas Paine, like The Age of Reason and Common Sense and I think you have a pretty good foundation for political science. There are a lot more books, but these good starters. They teach the student about limited government, something our politics needs desperately. I know it's a bit too conservative for most Wokies, but we have way to many people trying to social engineer the world into that dystopia in 1984, btw that's a good one to keep on the list. It's where we are heading.

I always tend to think about left/right debates as purely subjetive. It's all a matter of personal perspective. What may feel "left" to one person can feel "center" to another. As to this particular list, quite a few are general methods books. Some are works of literature. And keep in mind this is one person's list. You could ask another political scientist for their list and get a completely different set of texts. These were highly influential to me and informed the way I think about political science.

You are very confused. I find that teachers with advanced degrees are not all that advanced. If you are a political science major, you need to know the American system of government. You need to read the Philadelphia Convention notes and the state convention ratification notes. You need a class in originalism. I suggest Brion McClanahan's constitution class on the McClanahan Academy which is on line. Best money you will ever spend. He sticks to the primary documents like glue. University professor's typically learn from establishment text books. Powerful tax free foundations give billions to universities and as a result political science, economics, and history have become agenda based. This means you have been trained or indoctrinated in tax free foundation viewpoints which benefit a small group of people. You need to learn about the 1952 Reece Committee congressional investigation on how education was changed by tax free foundations to get Americans to accept collectivism. You also need to read Adam Smith's "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations." Economics, history and government go hand in hand. Otherwise you get theory which is not new but has already been tried. McClanahan will give a good understanding of the Anglo-American political tradition.

@@freedombro I can give an example from a current course I teach: Intro to IR. I teach a host of theories of IR, which all provide different theoretical perspectives on the nature of the international system, anarchy, and cooperation. I typically go over Realism, Liberalism (not the same as Liberal/Conservative liberalism at all), Marxism, Social Constructivism, Foreign policy analysis, post-colonialism, and IR feminism. These are all wide-ranging theories that trace back to as early as Thucydides. Some might strike a student as being very liberal in the sense of liberal/conservative while others might be more conservative. Still others exist in an interesting space outside of liberal/conservative...they're just an interesting way of viewing the world or a critical way of analyzing human behavior. No labels needed. I always encourage debate in my courses. Of course, not all professors are the same.
As an aside, I can say my students typically really enjoy the lecture I do on Marxism. So much so that it often comes up in my performance reviews each semester. I only have an hour and fifteen minutes to work with, but I provide a nuanced look at the theory in terms of classical Marxism as well as the expansion of Marx's theory by scholars like Wallerstein, who developed world systems theory. It's a useful foil for understanding Realism and Liberalism, just as they are useful foils to use against Marxism. All the theories work in coordination with each other to make a complicated web of social history.
