Megaman legends with uncapped resolution and texture filtering looks amazing unironically. I can't believe it's low poly style in combination with it's bright colors hasn't been emulated more often in our modern indie game scene
Yeah, like, I've seen maybe a handful of games that go for a style like this. Most games that emulate a PS1 look are all horror that think low-poly hard-to-make-out monsters = scary :/
@@empty5013 when has art direction ever been easy? I can think of a couple of games with a really similar style in direction that could work with megaman legends' style
It’s kind of insane that the best modern example of this style is YIIK: A Postmodern RPG of all things. Despite how insanely mediocre that game is, the art really is great.
Not the same art style as this at all but an indie game that comes out later this year "the big catch" I recommend looking at its trailer, strong ps1 art direction

This game doesn't look like it's limited by its graphics, it doesn't look like the creators would've been able to come closer to their vision with better technology. It's achieved that ever-elusive quality of timelessness quite excellently.
It's all about art direction. Realism has nothing to do with quality, it's how you apply the style you're going for, be it realistic, cartoony, painterly, low poly, etc. Limitations brings resourcefulness and for sure we had a lot of great instances of great art direction in retro games (lots of bad too but that's par for the course). At the end of the day it's about preferences, but yeah to me this gane has very enjoyable visuals, thanks to great art direction (especially the facial animations (texture swaps) are very effective here). Another great example and perhaps my favorite of that era were the N64 Zeldas. The visuals in those games (esp. MM) are amazing at conveing the gloomy/weird/creepy ambiance. I don't find then ugly at all. Other than personal bias towards modern/realistic games I really don't understand this sentiment, it has the looks of its time and most of all it achieves what it sets to. The music/sound ambiance helps a ton too, though. It's the whole that's truly effective, and those games have a pretty solid and unified package, as far as art direction and conveying feeling through immersion/the environment goes. Love the voice acting in this game though. Coupled with the facial animations, they certainly were a highlight of my time playing MegaMan 64 (finally played through MML2 recently, also dope! Misadventures is next and I'm really curious to see how that one plays. Haven't gotten to it yet).
zelda ocarina of time and twilight princess looked so earthy organic and natural while cartoonish. people love the look of wind waker and breath of the wild but i cant help wishing they didnt abandon that old art style

its hilarious how this game will conitnue to look good as time goes by while Graphics that are themed as realistic will look more uncanny and worse with every passing year its a testament to how good anime styled or strong art style can make an game age like fine wine
That looks like the same robot Eggman fought tails with. So in Sonic Adventure, Eggman has nearly the same looking robot as she does fight against tails. Four legs and all.
