Step 1: Add 9 ounces of water. Step 2: Add 4.5 ounces of pva glue Step 3: Mix well Step 4: Pour into new container and stir again Step 5: Add 250 grams of Calcium carbon (chalk) into seperate beak Step 6: Slowly add it into liquid while mixing Step 7: Repeat step 5 and 6 (total of 500 grams) Step 8: Add 120 mL of paint to liquid Step 9: Mix liquid (if you want thicker, add more of the chalk) Step 10: Mix till consistency you prefer (He used approximately 750 grams). Step 11: Store well Now you got Homemade Gesso. Thanks for the video!
I just buy a 5 gallon of PVA primer, then add a gallon of flat ceiling paint to it, (or a mix of 5 to one) done. Lasts me for about 30 or 40 canvases. The art market would have you believe they put magic turds into their stuff, but its just simple flat latex paint with a PVA additive.
Thank you so much! I started playing with acrylic paint and currently am very low income. The tips you offer are so helpful and replace things I thought I needed like Mixing Medium and Gesso when the ingredient are so much cheaper! Thank you thank you thank you!
Clive, just a question concerning the PVA Glue - In the US, we usually use Elmer's Glue-All, but I know it has a slightly positive Ph level and acidity. The concern is that it could eventually turn yellowish in the finished artwork, especially in areas of white paint. Is your PVA Glue a bookbinder's glue, or is the UK PVA glue a different formulary from the US's PVA?
Loving your homemade gessos & modeling paste tutorials!! Thank you for your well thought out & executed tutorial videos. By any chance, have you made your own crackle paste yet? If so, I'd love to see how you do it. Thanks again.
Love all of your recipes, Clive, trying them out, and they work! I live in Mexico and sometimes certain items are difficult to buy locally. From Essex, to Montreal, and finally here in Mexico. Cheers, amigo.
Thanks for this information. I wanted an alternative to commercial gesso made with animal components, so this looks like the answer for me. Great idea!
Tried doing this. Measure the H2O and PVA glue carefully. Mixed thoroughly. Was only able to mix it 400 grams of the calcium carbonate. Even at the first 250 grams, the mixture got really thick - I could stand the wisk up in it. Put in half of a 62 mL tube of paint. I tried gessoing a wood panel with it; the mixture is very translucent. Can I fix the glop I've made or do I start over? Help!
Great information! I never thought to make my own gesso. Will try this when I run out! Question for ya - can we use student grade white paint (instead of artist quality) to tint the mixture or would the extra binders and junk cause an issue? I have so much leftover student grade titanium laying around from early learning lol Thanks for your channel! :)
Thank you didn't realise you had a shop as just brought some from Amazon as I saw your video on texture paste so thought would give it a go. I shall certain,y buy from you next time and will pass on to my mixed media crafts no friends your video as we all think the pre brought stuff is expensive. Loved your videos so easy to follow..
Could you use a colored acrylic paint to give it a good base color? Also, do you have a cost estimate for the quart or so of homemade Gesso you produced?
M Rayner I believe here in USA we have to use talc, (like in baby powder) was thinking possibly buying white chalk and pulverize into powder... The measurements should be the same with white talc. (Makes me wonder if that ingredient is used in explosive devices here)
um ~ i don't think so. talc is magnesium while calcium carbonate is calcium. talc might work for ground but i don't think it's the same thing as chalk. since calcium carbonate is basically antacid/calcium supplement it's probably a good idea to check the health food store or a supplements store like Vitamin Shoppe. i honestly think u can crush up school chalk and get enough for a small batch. back to school's soon which means we can get back to school clearance for pennies on the dollar. if i spot school chalk for cheap(like those crazy 80% off and penny sales) i'll give it a shot. gesso's ridiculously expensive for what it is.
CLIVE I'M NEW HERE and was delighted to find your site. I've only just come across your tutorials, I love them thank you for the information, I have subscribed! One for the girls though Clive; us girls do plastering as well you know ;) lol
It’s basically a resin as far as PH it’s not that technical PVA is a polymer vinyl acetate and if very stable it’s used as a glue and sealer in all industries from building to decoration it’s thinned down with water to make mod podge for art and design so I would assume the PH is ok. If you unsure use acrylic resin but that is very expensive and is basically the same with a few differences. PVA is used in a lot of domestic and art supplies Hope this helps
For how long will the gesso last ....I.live in Australia a bit warmer here... also a message for the Australian asking where to get calcium carbonate ...I get mine from a very large pet shop as they feed it to the horses as a supplement
+mick mick please forgive me but that formula is my own and is a patented formula I can not give this information out but it is available on my website store for purchase thanks Clive
Baby powder is not the best it can be used but it’s a talc too fine and very unstable chalk is best but if you use it mix to a smooth paste first then add the paint slowly until you get the thickness but it will separate and needs stir every time before use
Hello Clive! thankyou for these amazing tutorials. Sir i wanted to ask you that when my painting got dried there were cracks formed between it. And it even started fading. Is it only because i didn't used gesso before painting?
That's actually not true, sir. It's not the medium that makes something fade, it's the colour itself. For example aureolin is a colour that fades by nature. Fugitive is not the same as lightfast. Dyes are not lightfast. Most pigments are lightfast, in other words, they don't fade when exposed to light. For your information Daniel Smith watercolours do not fade (90% of them) when exposed to light(see a study that Jane Blundell, who is an expert on watercolour, did on her blog.
Cliv5art thank you for your sharing on how to make an homemade gesso.but can you please write down all the ingredients below? Thanks😊more power to your channel😊
Thank you for your recipe. I saw other recipes with baking soda. I tried one of them, but I didn't like the results. May be I did something wrong, but I am wondering if it is ok to use baking soda instead of calcium carbonate?

+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich hi Lindsay how surprised I am been wanting to talk for a while but you know I'm shy I tried plaster of Paris but found it did not work so well not sure why I know they are similar things but I believe other things have been added to plaster of Paris that's why I use just plain calcium carbonate or chalk it's fine ground stores well and never given me any problems but give it a try let me know what your findings are Contact me via messenger if you wish would be good to colab one day all my best Clive
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I can't really comment on shop bought products I do know they settle they do evaporate but I'm unsure if that will thicken then it's possible but may lead to contamination from air Bourne particular or my cat lol I make mine because I control the thickness of it being latex based a skin can form if I leave mine open for long periods Clive
It’s exactly the same don’t be fooled in thinking shop is better than home made it only the shops want you to buy from them artist have been making and mixing paint for 100s of years so it’s something I have learned. To save money
CLIVE5ART powered chalk..wow! 😁 Thanks for response..I think this is what I know as whiting used to clean off lead cement when making stained glass window.
It depends how you want to make it more gesso powder more grain less powder less grain what I show is my mix so it can be adjusted just add more paint or pva to adjust
I ordered the gesso powder from your website😀. Can you explain how the mixture changes by adding more of either glue or water. I got that the tooth changes depending on the amount of gesso powder. So what happends with more/less water and more/less glue?
You took all that time to weight everything then you just threw in a few more scoops of chalk in at the end. Why were you trying to be so accurate to begin with?
Step 1: Add 9 ounces of water.
Step 2: Add 4.5 ounces of pva glue
Step 3: Mix well
Step 4: Pour into new container and stir again
Step 5: Add 250 grams of Calcium carbon (chalk) into seperate beak

+Chris Rogers that is not easy to do it is possible but I have never got it quite right maybe one day
I'll be lookin' forward to it.👀😆
Helpful re gesso and use of digital scale with zeroing out. Thanks again Clive
Love all of your recipes, Clive, trying them out, and they work! I live in Mexico and sometimes certain items are difficult to buy locally. From Essex, to Montreal, and finally here in Mexico. Cheers, amigo.
Thank you happy to help
Great lesson Clive, I'll try to remember to make my own Gesso, God bless and have an great evening.
Thanks for this information. I wanted an alternative to commercial gesso made with animal components, so this looks like the answer for me. Great idea!
I’m currently working on a new lesson covering new gesso ideas
hi clive5. for the calcium carbonate, is agricultural grade suitable for making gesso? or should i use technical grade??
Wat is the difference between Pva glue & jus regular school glue?? Plus...thank u so much 4 ur channel...
Nothing it's the same product ... Thank you
I love it! Smooth smooth... perfecto 👌
Thanks 🙏🏼 ... we can make it thicker adding more CC.. or less if we want it thinner ah!!!
Hello, can gesso be used also as a primer on glass bottles? Thanks
Tried doing this. Measure the H2O and PVA glue carefully. Mixed thoroughly. Was only able to mix it 400 grams of the calcium carbonate. Do use expensive stuff student grade is fine even house hold emulsion can be used, thank you 😊
+CLIVE5ART I meant don't use
Great accent and it's easy to listen to while getting the most out of your instructions. Any idea of cost comparisons?
Thank you didn't realise you had a shop as just brought some from Amazon as I saw your video on texture paste so thought would give it a go. Thank you 😊 it's so expensive and overrated making your own saves £££
Thank you for sharing. My question is can you use this for black gesso as well?
Thank you for the details !!!
Could you use a colored acrylic paint to give it a good base color? Also, do you have a cost estimate for the quart or so of homemade Gesso you produced?
You could yes I guess the price depends on the materials you can buy it’s difficult for me as I’m in the UK and unsure of the prices around the world
I wonder if Elmer's washable school glue can be used for this. Thanks!! Really appreciate your tutorials.
All pva glue is washable or should I say wipeable
Which white paint to pour in!? Any brand or any type in particular!? Please let me know..!
Thanks a lot.
By the way why do we need gesso in painting?
Can you use talcum powder instead of calcium carbonate?
You can try but calcium carbonate does have more bite you can get it on eBay or my shop at www.clive5art.co.uk
M Rayner I believe here in USA we have to use talc, (like in baby powder) was thinking possibly buying white chalk and pulverize into powder... The measurements should be the same with white talc. (Makes me wonder if that ingredient is used in explosive devices here)
Talk is just very fine chalk it's not used in explosives that's a different chemical
um ~ i don't think so. talc is magnesium while calcium carbonate is calcium. talc might work for ground but i don't think it's the same thing as chalk.
since calcium carbonate is basically antacid/calcium supplement it's probably a good idea to check the health food store or a supplements store like Vitamin Shoppe.

what shops can you buy Calcium carbonate in England? I can't buy online
www.clive5art.co.uk. Shop
I think I used mid podge for the glue....anyway I added powder...water...mixed....came out AWESOME
As long as it works it's fine

Hi how long does it keep fresh please ? and should it be kept warm or cold place thanks i have subscribed
Can I leave the white tube paint out without undermining the integrity of the gesso? Thank you!
Yes the paint just gives it a white colour that's all
Hi can you you use white wall paint instead of acrylic paint
Please tell me what is the difference between this gesso n the gesso in your other video ...clear gesso one?
One had calcium carbonate and white paint the clear does not have paint
Hi, can i use acrylic waterproof, instead of gesso? Tks.
Unsure sorry
I've only just come across your tutorials, I love them thank you for the information, I have subscribed! One for the girls though Clive; us girls do plastering as well you know ;) lol
Thank you yes I know girls plaster also sorry 😐
Pinkhill 36 I'm enjoying your videos so much I'm prepared to forgive you just this once 😊😘
Is chalk powder i.e. calcium carbonate and plaster of Paris POP the same? Nice demo, thanks
For black gesso, should I use fluid acrylic or tube? Thanks so much for sharing! Luana
+Therese Jarecki don't think it matters fluid my make for a smoother mix but I've not used them
Can you tint your gesso with other then white paint to prep a canvas?
Yes you could
That water, does it have to be Evian or could I just use Spa or Vichy?
Whatever works
If we make this with glue for a sealer, if it gets wet, won’t it reactivate and get sticky?
Hey Clive? Would Gesso-ing a canvas make it ready to soft pastel on? Instead of constantly buying the expensive pastel paper?
You can as long as you seal it afterwards you could use hair spray to seal it
Good idea Clive but I'm not sure the PVA is ph neutral, would this have an effect on the longevity of any painting on top of this surface
PVA is used in a lot of domestic and art supplies
Hope this helps
How archival is the PVA? Both in terms of acidity and eventual brittleness? I know the cal. carb. is fairly inert, along with the acrylic paint.
Well I've been told it's fine but there is no way to know for sure as it's only been around for 50 years or so
For how long will the gesso last ....I.live in Australia a bit warmer here... also a message for the Australian asking where to get calcium carbonate ...I get mine from a very large pet shop as they feed it to the horses as a supplement
Gesso had a long shelf life as long as it's in an air tight containers
That was my concern too ..
any pottery materials supply will have it.
can you tell us please what to mix for the blending white so I can paint like Bob Ross but with acrylic ,and many thanks
+mick mick please forgive me but that formula is my own and is a patented formula I can not give this information out but it is available on my website store for purchase thanks Clive
it's OK I understand the only thing is I live in Australia can you send over here
+mick mick I do actually have orders going this weekend
Thank You for your videos! Real help, Now do I have to use destilled water for gesso?
I always boil my water and let cool just what I do
Is it possible to use other colour paint like orange?
You could but don't see why or you will have just orange
clive-can I use this to prime my canvas before oil painting?
Yes that is what it's used for
Clyde - is this a good recipe for when you use OIL paints, or is this just for acrylic painting?
All media types
Sir..step #8..what kind addid liquid paint...i want to learnd about this plzz..thnk..
thank you for this simple, economical way to maintain my gesso levels.
+Regena Baine your very welcome
Can I use flotrol and directly add calcium carbonate to that?
You could for a clear gesso
is it less expensive to make your own or buy the cheap stuff at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby? I live in the US also.
Well yes as you can then mix it to your own mix I like a very gritty mix you might like a smooth mix you can save ££££££
thanks.
Happy to help
Happy to help

Can i make gesso with a flour mixed with baking soda and water sir?
It can be used but I’m unsure how stable it would be
What do you suggest should be added to avoid mould ?
+Joanna Skor nothing if you use pure or boiled cool water
Caco2 is very very common in Indian villages used to whitewash walls
Good to know
I used baby powder and it keeps clumping . Is it normal that each time I want to use it I have to mix it vigorously?
Baby powder is not the best it can be used but it’s a talc too fine and very unstable chalk is best but if you use it mix to a smooth paste first then add the paint slowly until you get the thickness but it will separate and needs stir every time before use
hmm I wonder if I should just throw it out then. Thank you for replying
Hello Clive! thankyou for these amazing tutorials. Sir i wanted to ask you that when my painting got dried there were cracks formed between it. And it even started fading. Is it only because i didn't used gesso before painting?
+Omer Siddiq possible but sounds like over thinning of your paint with water or a poor surface
the cause of fading could also be because of colours that were not lightfast.
as far as i know acrylics are light fast only water colours are fugitive
That's actually not true, sir. It's not the medium that makes something fade, it's the colour itself. For example aureolin is a colour that fades by nature. Fugitive is not the same as lightfast. +Dawn Bartlett your welcome all my videos can be found by typing #clive5art in the search bar
How many days or months can we store it ??
Can we use white flour by chalk?
Flower will go mildew over time
Do you know how much the paint weights? I only have a 500ml pot and it would be a lot less messy if I could use the scale :)
I’m going to remake the video as I now have a new recipe so I’ll use scales in that one
Thank you for answering! Looking forward to see the new video :)
Could I use plaster instead of chalk, like what you use to fill a hole in the wall ?
Yes you can make sure you don’t put too much in as it will set it’s basically the same thing it know as gypsum
You save y life. can i use titanium dioxide as well
You could but it would be expensive
hi @clove5art , if I made 500gm gesso , so what was the quantity i have to take of all this product ,,,, please tell me by numbers of quantity and if I haven't calcium carbonate so can I use normal user Chalk and grinding on machine ? please tell me
Hi this video is the new one try that out How to Make Homemade Gesso Acrylic paintingth-cam.com/video/221CrWWxhBA/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for sharing.
What paint did you add?
From the video the recipe is 1 part PVA glue, 2 parts water, and 6 parts chalk - the text above currently says 2 parts chalk and 6 parts water - was a bit confused but got there in the end. Thanks for the recipe though!
Not difficult for me to get confused lol
Can we use this gesso for oil painting?
Yes as an under painting
so 1 part PVA, 2 parts water, and 4 parts powdered chalk? I am making a quiche while I watch this so I might have mixed up the ratios. Also what are your thoughts on using plaster of paris or baby powder instead of chalk? Those 2 items are easier for me to find than powdered chalk.
Good lord, I think I'll just go buy the gesso.
Expensive hobbie buying paint you can make yourself in bulk tho
I got so many lumps mixing the Gesso :( How do I remove them? My chalk immediately got lumpy...
Can I use this on my stretched canvas?
Found answer (yes) on another Comment.
Thanks!
How long does it keep? Do you keep at at room temp?
It will settle it can be kept for several years in normal conditions
Can I add some natural fiber to give texture?
Yes it can be used if you wish I would experiment with small amount to see what works
thank you so much for sharing your receipe...gesso is so expensive now and days. can you possibly did a video on creating "heavy gesso?" thank you again. love your videos.
Heavy gesso ??
So excited to find your videos...is the paint any old cheap paint?
Any white acrylic will be fine
If anyone know plz tell me if we could use this gesso for oil painting
Yes as an under painting
Clive is this also what manufacturers are also calling chalk paint? Or is that something different?
Yes chalk paint it's used in shabby chic furniture
Would this work to prime wood for painting too?
Yes it can be used
Clive, do you think I could add plaster of Paris to thicken economy grsso that is too thin? I want a thicker gesso:) thanks!
I was also thinking about leaving the lid off the gesso for a few days to thicken it too. what is the best option?
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich hi Lindsay how surprised I am been wanting to talk for a while but you know I'm shy
I tried plaster of Paris but found it did not work so well not sure why I know they are similar things but I believe other things have been added to plaster of Paris that's why I use just plain calcium carbonate or chalk it's fine ground stores well and never given me any problems but give it a try let me know what your findings are

+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I can't really comment on shop bought products I do know they settle they do evaporate but I'm unsure if that will thicken then it's possible but may lead to contamination from air Bourne particular or my cat lol
I make mine because I control the thickness of it being latex based a skin can form if I leave mine open for long periods
Clive
Could you do a video of a light/medium weight medium (that dries transparent)? Would be awesome
Just use elements glue or school glue it’s latex based but fine thin no more than 30% with a water
Great video Clive. How did you find out how to make Gesso? Will it be as good as the shop-bought stuff?
It’s exactly the same don’t be fooled in thinking shop is better than home made it only the shops want you to buy from them artist have been making and mixing paint for 100s of years so it’s something I have learned. To save money
Awwww...I added sum WHITE and it's beautiful...smooth
Hi, I am new here, like your valuable posts, iam a beginner, thank you
Thank you
Thank you, very helpful! Someone told me that he uses sodium (baking soda) instead of chalk. Is this an option / did you try it?
Could work a natural product gritty but would it react with the other ingredients and if so why don’t manufacturers use it
Good points! :)
What paint is that?
Made some last year...still good...just had to add a little water
It does evaporate
Thank you for the recipe .... am wanting to try it!!!
Thank you
Thank you Clive.
Isn't gesso supposed to be somewhat thicker than paint ?
Not really traditional gesso made with rabbit skin glue is thin
Thanks again Clive much appreciated!
+angela maxwell your welcome
Hi Clive - another Brit here - where would I get calcium carbonate from?
Ok I have some on my shop page www.clive5art.co.uk check there in a few days just got a stock in
Pet feed stores, cheaper.
Am I right in thinking calcium carbonate is the same as whiting?
It's powered chalk 🤔
CLIVE5ART powered chalk..wow! 😁 Thanks for response..I think this is what I know as whiting used to clean off lead cement when making stained glass window.
My gesso turned out very chalky and absorbs a lot of paint when I use it. Should I add more white paint or glue to it or do something else?
It depends how you want to make it more gesso powder more grain less powder less grain what I show is my mix so it can be adjusted just add more paint or pva to adjust
I ordered the gesso powder from your website😀. Can you explain how the mixture changes by adding more of either glue or water. I got that the tooth changes depending on the amount of gesso powder. So what happends with more/less water and more/less glue?
The white powder,, what is that ?? Sorry I did not understand
Calcium carbonate or chalk
What is the difference between PVA glue and fevicol MR ? I mean can I use fevicol MR which we get in art and craft shops instead of pva glue ??
I've not heard of that
would you use this homemade gesso for your professional paintings , ones that you will sell? Thank You good video have a good day
Yes basically it’s the same as shop bought if not better
You took all that time to weight everything then you just threw in a few more scoops of chalk in at the end. Why were you trying to be so accurate to begin with?
Great video Clive, thanks for sharing! I was just watching Lindsay's geso video and she said to tell you " Lindsay The Frugal Crafter says “Hi!” "
+Suzanne Rowe I know you thank you
