    Just a minor word to the wise, technically tempera is made with egg yolk, egg white is used to make glair. A drop of dammar varnish helps preserve tempera mixes on the pallet and the painting. I did a lot of mixed media work with acrylics ~40 years ago I mixed in all sorts of things, and I still have some of the samples. I was a printing ink chemist / painter back then. I can tell you that using a lot of polyol eg glycerine can increase drying time to be unacceptably long and it can migrate via the substrate. PVA glue varies in quality, some I tested tended to go orange around the 2 decade mark. I found that with care you can introduce drying oils into acrylic paint and make it more compatible with oil paint; despite the old artist's rule of 'fat over lean' my oil/acrylic mixes are still looking new and flexible after 40 years! My best tip: A small amount of benzyl alcohol helps really thin acrylic paint flow from the brush to the canvas but don't over do it.

      I think you are absolutely right, adding these things will most likely yellow, crack or peel over time.

    I hv been using glycerine with rose water 50:50 with a few drops of lemon to lighten the skin tone and remove dryness. This is my mother's old recipe.
    Amazing that I can use it in acrylic paints too!
    Thank you Clive.

    Hi Clive, a very interesting video, thank you. The vegetable glycerine might come in useful for glazes as a traditional egg tempera painter. Egg tempera is made from the pure yolk of an egg that has been diluted with either water or white wine. If using white wine it also serves to preserve the tempera binder. Egg white is not used in the tempera binder at all but can be used as a glaze over the top of a tempera painting or as a base when painting Cyrillic lettering over gold leaf gilding. It helps to stop the tempera on the gold from coalescing into beads which can be very frustrating. Cheers!

    KY Jelly is also sold here in the states under the name Taylor lube and it is used as a lubricant in food service machines such as soft serve ice cream machines. We have "dollar stores" here that offers off brands for (you guessed it) a dollar, and water based personal lubricant is available..

    I gave up on acrylic and went back to oils a while ago. The main reason being the rapid drying, which doesn't give much time for blending. But this might be worth trying. Thanks.

    I use Acrylic for cartooning, Abstract artwork and some illustrative Realism, so I had to figure out how to make the colors more Opaque. I found that adding Acrylic White to the individual Acrylic colors makes the colors more Opaque. It is a bit tricky because too much white starts to change the original color. Also adding Water Color Gouaches to Acrylic helps to make the colors more opaque and less transparent. This video is very informative and I will be experimenting with some of the ingredients to see what I can do with them.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Try also using a mixing white it will make the paint more opaque but it's less lightly to change the colour

    Wow wow wow!! I am new to your channel and I absolutely love and appreciate your "tips"! The gesso tip was an eye opener!! I did my first big abstract painting yesterday, and struggled with blending and blending too fast. I painted with white acrylic first, I should have done with gesso. "Good to know". I have been a closet painter/ draw /sketcher because I never took lessons but never thought I was "good enough". So now I don't care, I want to be better for me. Thank you for sharing! Wow! So cool! I have wanted to start painting for several years .....well almost my whole life, so I'll just say over 4 decades! I did do a tiny painting months ago because I've heard it can possibly help with my depression, it's been really bad for quite some time. I was pretty frustrated because my paint would dry up sooooo fast and that's not great when your a beginner trying to take my time, AND trying to get me 12 year old son to paint with me in Hope's he would like it and want to get into painting. I do feel painting helps quite a bit with depression, however my issue is just getting everything out and set up ....and clean up, lol. It's like a wall I just can't climb for some reason. I would love to get over that! These tips have given me a great feeling as I see the glycerin and KY will definitely help with the frustration thus making painting more enjoyable. I am ambidextrous so I have sooooo many crafts I like to do, even getting a lil business off the ground. I feel doing that would change my life for the better! Having debilitating depression really sucks and has put a huge "damper" on my life and I'm desperate to change that. You have given me hope with painting and I am finally looking forward to getting all my painting supplies out once again .....hopefully more then once, lol! Thank you! Wish I could share a picture of a painting or 2 afterwards!

      Bought some hair gel cheap in Wilko my wife asked why you want that ? I don't have much hair and told her I only wanted about a teaspoon for painting, Clive's idea. She's going to use the rest.

    So I can use glycerin (which I already have a lot of) as a drying retarder, to allow me to wet blend much easier? I'll have to see how well this works on miniatures, because that's what I work on most these days. Thanks for yet another great video, Clive, much appreciated.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes actually it was used as an additive in the early days in the paint mixes these days there are other chemical based additives which are more stable glycerin can make the paint sticky and only a few drops should be used with water it can also effect the drying time.. manufacturers do say don’t use it but they did for years it’s just that they want you to buy there products so take care while using and try a few samples to get the right mixes

    Glycerin also retards the drying time, it works quite well for that. 😊🎨 I should add, once dry it won't be sticky.

      It's important not to add too much or it will not dry

    Found your video while looking for an alternative to water (since I just learned about underbinding.)
    I was searching desperately for something that wouldn't cost me ten dollars a bottle, and then I found you!
    So, thank you!

    Thank you! I love the workability of oil paints, but am allergic to the odor of them. The vegetable glycerin is an interesting add, and I have some in my pantry. I think I will give it a go.

      Don’t add too much as it will make the paint sticky and will take a while to dry out

    How many years does it take that vegetable glycerine to dry?? One word... Liquitex! I started out in high school painting with acrylics and am amazed by all the beaUtiful colors there are to buy nowadays that I bought some although I've been studying watercolor for the time being. This was certainly an interesting demonstration and I use vegetable glycerine, lanolin, and castor oils mixed into lotions for foot callouses so have a huge bottle of it. Can see where it would be a substitute for gloss medium and useful for slowing down drying times.

      Veg glycerin was used in the early days of paint manufacturer the driving time varies along with amounts used small drops in water works best

    Thank you. Research into Rembrandt's methods and materials has shown that he mixed glues , silicates and other things to effect the properties of his paint. Emulsion painting with oils is very interesting and does not require toxic solvents. Tad Spurgeon's has a wonderful web site about oils, emulsions and additives.

      @@CLIVE5ART I should say it was made of plastic, not at all heavy duty. This one looks like a much higher quality.
      Nevertheless, essentially the same thing.
      Also, being left handed, I now remember trying to reverse the thing using scotch tape.
      P.S. I'm an artist today who does decorative painting and tourist portraits in Central Park, here in New York.
      Thanks for the tips.

    re KY jelly... Veterinarians use lube by the gallon. There is general lube that runs $10-12/ gallon. the non spermicidal lube used for artificial insemination is around double that. Of course smaller quantities are available but i dont think spoilage is an issue.
    check out Nasco, farm and ag, Safe lube or General lube.

    Well... great job!!! You experiment with different types of things with acrylic paint like me.🤗😊🥰 I found out over the years that not all acrylic paints can be placed in the freezer to be used at a later date if put out too much paint on pallet. Ateza dries like cement when put in freezer and can not be used. But..... 🥰😊🤗❤ glorious SYSTEM 3 ACRYLIC PAINT ❤ is the best acrylic paint in the world!!! It can be frozen in the freezer for months and still defrost to be used on the canvas after months of freezing it on my pallets as I tend to paint different works at the same time. I also use to mix Windsor and newton oil /winton oils with system 3 acrylic paint straight from the tubes together on the pallet no water no linseed or turpentine or other dilution. Just the pure oil paint from the tube and the acrylic straight from the tube mixed them fast together to create a nice thick butter of vibrant colour and paint with it on the canvas to create vibrant works that keeps its vibrant colours even after 20 years. The paintings still looks vibrant 🤗❤🤗
    Keep on experimenting it's the artists nature to do so. And its different strokes for different folks so keep up the great work my friend 🙌🏾💕

    Hi Clive, just came across this video as wanting to move into mixed media after 6 months of getting fairly good at water colours. Excellent 'video' I can assume you are teacher or presenter as I am, if not, you are bloody good my friend. I wish all TH-cam artists were as clear, to the point, very detailed, interesting and you made it fun. Will certainly see what else you have done. I am wanting to try doing large canvas abstract murals but want to cut down the costs to practice. Can you recommend any standard DIY primer paint for creating a base on hardboard or MDF . Also your opinion of stretching cotton dust sheets over a home made frame and then again a base for gessor. It is just for me to try out an urge to slop on paint on a large scale. In my early years teaching would do large murals (mainly DC/Marvel superheroes) at the back of my classrooms for the kids. Recently travelling through Italy using Airbnb my host was an artist and invited me to his studio where was working on a very large mural, was fascinating and has really given me the desire to have a go.
