    Speaking of being like making batter, here's a PRO TIP from a baker, we typically make cake batter by weighing the dry in a bowl then adding the wet, this makes less lumps and is easier to make a smooth gesso!

    May I recommend starting with less (perhaps 1 cup instead of 1.5) distilled water and then add everything else. That way you can add more of the water until desired consistency is reached. I just feel that’s a better option instead of adding more calcium carbonate. If you somehow add too much water and it’s too thin, you could then add a touch more CC until it’s right. :-)

    Hi Clive, thanks for all your tips! I really like your videos. I've got a question, does this homemade gesso ever go off? Also I've seen the other video where you make clear gesso and you used a powder with three ingredients. Would this work just the same if I only used the calcium carbonate and no white paint added?

    Thanks for the informative video. I'm using thick canvas. After drying my paintings and rolling them up, after a while the painting gets cracked. I tried to roll them in a big roll but it didn't work. Could it be because of the texture of my gesso?

    Ive just bought some canvases (Quantum Art thick edge canvas) and it says it has all ready been prepared with Gesso would you still do it again with your own before you paint on to it? And thank you your tutorials are really good and easy to listen too.

    Hi Clive. I've never been taught to use gesso, was told to wet the canvas!!! Now I know that's a terrible thing to do, I'm trying to make my own gesso, I bought johnstones white matte house paint & Pva , can I use bicarbonate soda or baking soda instead of the chalk?

  • @duchett743

    I followed this recipe using calcium carbonate and my gesso came out very chalky, very absorbent base. It begins to lift off the canvas when I apply any amount of water or water down paint. Any suggestions what I've done wrong? It's quite a mess and not a good surface to paint on.

    I often need gesso as a primer for projects that need to be wet sanded. I have that using a water-based polyurethane finish as a binder works well for this. It has been my experience that the acrylic gesso sold in stores cannot be sanded. It clogs the sandpaper.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes texture paste is basically acrylic resin with marble dust but I have made a good paste with pva and cc add the pva slowly to the cc make sure to get rid of lumps or you could use tile adhesive but take care it could crack that’s why marble dust is used it’s more stable

    I thought Plaster of Paris was calcium carbonate, and I'm pretty sure that's mainly what it is. BUT, I made some gesso using it and it was very thick using your amounts. I used some of it right away and I think it was ok, but I've never even seen "real" gesso so not sure. Anyway, just looked at my sealed container with what was left and it is solid. Hmm...

      Calcium carbonate is chalk plaster of Paris is more of a gypsum and will thicken in Walter

      In the US, Calcium carbonate is sold as hydrated lime or whiting. It is also sold in grocery stores as pickling lime. I don't know if your British chalk is exactly the same, but you don't want to breathe much of the dust, because it is caustic. Plaster of Paris is calcium sulfate (gypsum) that is heated to a high temperature to drive the water trapped in the mineral out, then ground into a powder. When you add the powder to water, it combines with the water, crystalizes and becomes solid. Over here, we call calcium carbonate lime, and what we call chalk is sticks of hardened plaster of Paris used for drawing on a blackboard or sidewalk..

    Is calcium carbonate the same thing as whiting?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically yes tho whiting does have more of a pigment look about it where cc is more grey. Whiting is more expensive and traditionaly used in gesso

    White does gesso have to be white? Why I as is because alot of the time people stain a canvas/board before starting a painting. So why not cut out the middleman and make the gesso a neutral stain colour, by mixing in a little burnt umber.

    My question maybe silly. If you were making white gesso would you need the paint? I know most PVA dries clear. Is this the reason?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you don’t add the paint it would be clear gesso the paint helps to seal the canvas also

    Hi Cliver, thanks for uploading. I have a question, does this Pva damage canvas with years due to acid? Can this gesso be used to prime a canvas You will roll when dries?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use it then roll the canvas yes as to rot then no one knows as it could take over 100 yrs and it’s not been around that long to know for sure
