    As someone too far away to attend, I've really been enjoying the coverage of this event!

    Nice! If I wasn't on the west coast I would have loved to go to that.

    I used to have diskette cabinets filled with AOL floppies that I formatted and carefully lifted the labels off of that would be used as storage for files from BBS downloads and sneaker net from and to friends.

      When I was in college (mid-90s), those floppies would litter the mail room floors of the dorms. We would scoop them, since floppies were $1 each back then.
      When AOL switched to CD-ROMs, we learned how crappy CDs performed as coasters. The sweating water would bead on the surface then drip onto the table.

    Hey! I had the Compaq monitor that went with the speakers at 10:16 , with an old Win98SE tower that I'd gotten from Circuit City! Those were amazing speakers back then. Seeing those brought me back a bit.

    I had to cringe when I saw those Ditto 2Gb tapes... I worked at a place back in the day and we sold some of those new with systems. Had nothing but problems with them. Biggest issue I recall was the drive would fail somehow and not recognize the end of the tape and unspool it off the reel. I think they about all eventually failed that way. Thanks for sharing some photos and video of the event, wish I could have been there!

    The floppy disks and the software on them is probably the most valuable thing from an archiving perspective since many are close to irretrievable failure if not past it, I found switching floppy drives being used to archive, had the largest impact on readability, Sony external USB drives you may have better luck.

    That box at the end of the video looks like a box to a Imagewriter II...I would know as I have one. Found a ImageWriter II in box with original packing material on Facebook MarketPlace. Even had the rubber things that went on the rod that holds the printer head. They were there to keep it from moving around in shipping and are meant to be removed before using the printer so that's neat. My ImageWriter II is yellowed but still works great. I think I only paid $25 for it too. It even came with a bonus item. A Apple IIe printer cable for connecting the ImageWriter II to a Apple IIe. This also came in it's original box. No idea what to do with it though as I don't have an Apple IIe.
    Had to get a different cable off eBay to connect my ImageWriter II to a Macintosh SE (and now my LC III) so this cable is just sitting in my closet right now.

    I'd love to see a video on your Ditto drive at some point. We had one with the first computer I ever used, but it's long gone. I bought one on eBay, new in box, only to discover that it was DOA... The rubber on the wheel on the inside had melted, so it couldn't advance any tapes.

    Really nice meeting and chatting with you guys. FYI, the PB1400 uses a shielded power adapter like the 3400 and G3s. That one you got is a 5300 adapter.

      @@Mac84 The seller told me it was a 1400 too (he was really trying to offload it) and I tried to correct him, but it obviously didn't take, haha.

    I never could get myself to pay those high prices for the Iomega 100mb zipdisks especially considering cds held 650mb and AOL kept a large ready supply of 1.44mb floppies on hand.

  • @keithwhisman
    @keithwhisman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You needed those io switches when you had devices that insisted on using the same IRQs a headache the then new plug n play standard brought to an end. Before plug n play we had to manually assign settings via pin jumpers on the cards and they all had them such as ide controller cards, sound cards, graphics cards and the damn mother boards had jumpers on them for setting multipliers and base clock speeds such as 4x25mhz or 2x33mhz and the dream of having 2x50mhz and that was just 486 and I don’t think we ever did get a 2x50 but it would’ve been faster than a 4x25
