pretty sure the reason dolores couldn’t hear the house cracking is because the doors were flickering and everyone’s powers weren’t working (like luisa feeling weak). edit: yes i understand that the party being loud could’ve been a contributing factor, i was just suggesting an idea
Also one of the animators of the movie revealed that Dolores's room is soundproof so that could explain how she didn't hear abuela talk about the miracle dying, although it doesn't always work. Edit: forgot to add a small important detail
Am I the only one that felt like Bruno didn’t get the proper apology he deserves? This man literally spent 10 years wasting away in the walls and he doesn’t even get a apology from anybody!
Not all apologies have to be verbal-if anything, a long-winded apology would almost feel forced or false. Actions speak much louder than words, and the way he was welcomed in the end (joyfully!) is a good start (but not the entirety; it's an ongoing process) for a more 'active' form of making amends.
@@qara_ch 100% agree, it's not like he was looking for an apology. What Bruno wanted and needed was acceptance, and that's what he got, with the acceptance the apology was implied
Not all apologies have to be verbal. Besides Bruno didn’t want an apology. All he wanted was to be accepted back into his family. He was accepted back in no questions asked.
@@glugging It's his trauma speaking, actually! When you're basically raised in abuse you it becomes a reflex to internalise that guilt and preemptively apologise to avoid getting yelled at. What his sisters did by interrupting him and saying "it's alright" is them making amends in their own way (re: my first comment in this thread) They're basically telling him "it's okay, it's not your fault, we're just happy you're here again and we miss you" and his heart must have been close to bursting at that moment.
What I liked about Encanto was that Mirabel wasn’t fixed but rather accepted In the end instead of making her save the magic and become the most powerful and respected, they had the family stop giving her unrealistic expectations and just accepted her for who she was even if she didn’t have a gift
I believe there were underdeveloped characters simply because there was just too many characters. The Madrigals are a big family, so it was probably best to focus the screentime on the more relevant characters :(
Yeah I want a series for more of the characters story, they did sneak in some Pepa story on the sidelines, her pressure being the emotional impact of having to hide her true emotions to not be a nuisance. In the end she's dancing and letting out rain clouds which shows her bond with the family is patched and she can feel how she wants now. Camilo was going to have a story but it was cut out for screen time and I wish they snuck some bits in, he was gonna have an identity crisis about how people only like him when he is not himself.
I also don't think it's necessary to expand all of them. As the movie works without them but it still leaves room for expansion, either through the Fandom or a sequel/series. Also leaving some things open like that furthers audience engagement as we can see with all the Fan content being produced.
I feel like if an hour was added to the movie, with everyone getting a song it would’ve been so much better. Like Camilo singing about him starting to have to think when he turns into Himself and how he doesn’t know who he is. Dolores singing exasperated about hearing everything, how she can’t take it and how she is just so sick of having to keep people’s secrets and ignore their words when she is faced with them. Pepa could’ve sung about how done she is with always holding her feelings back and being shamed for it by Abuela. Julietta shaking and having a song similar to Luisa, being scared that if she can’t help someone, if she isn’t useful - she shouldn’t be there. Also??? We were robbed of Felix and Augustus (maybe even Mariano) singing about how it is to marry into a magical family. Oh and Bruno and Mirabel singing angry songs at Abuela because in a way she did all of this to them (yes she was traumatized too, but she made the family toxic). And lastly Abuela realizing what she did.
I feel like Dolores hears everything and nothing. She's probably become kinda good at ignoring what she's hearing when she's having fun or she hears so much that it tunes out somethings
My take is that she knew Bruno was there all along, but couldn't exactly just tell everyone including Abuela "guess what, Bruno never left and he's inside the walls!"
I doubt it. There’s a fan song called 'Turn it down' and it sounds pretty close to being a canon song. It goes over the stress Dolores feels having to always hear things she doesn’t want to and how she can’t get a break for a second. It practically eats at her. If they had that song in the movie, we would’ve gotten more out of her character.
We all know the perfect movie doesn’t exist, but this definitely turned out better than the last, mainly because I can feel how much passion they poured in it. They tried, I believe such a concept would have worked best for a TV show so each character would have gotten the screentime they deserved, Camilo barely has five minutes and yet he’s a fan favorite.
I kind of get the feeling that Dolores did hear the house breaking, abuela talking about the miracle, etc. but, just like the other children, might carry a lot of pressure to be perfect. She probably doesn’t always say or voice what she hears, or is very selective about what she shares with the family. She uses her powers for the “good” of the family and never to try to “ruin” or hurt the family. Clearly, she saw how her Tio Bruno was treated for hurting the family, and probably wanted to avoid that guilt and shame.
@@autumnrose9655 I mean she was only trying to save the family, besides with big news like that I would wanna tell as well. If my family was in danger as well as the house and magic I would be scared
@@HImitsuRose4869 That doesn't make any sense at all since that vision was created 10 years ago. This isn't something that would put the family in any more danger knowing about it now than they would have hearing about it 10 years ago. There was no evidence that they were in such immediate danger that it couldn't wait til after the proposal. To me the actual reality paints her a lot less favorably which is that she was intentionally trying to ruin the proposal with her gossip because she secretly didn't want it to go well because she was in love with the same guy, and was passive aggressively trying to mess things up. I see no other reason why she couldn't have waited til afterwards to tell them. She specifically chose to do it at a time where it just so happens to mess up the proposal with the guy she likes when she could have just waited til after he left to spread the news.
My theory is that she only answers specific questions, like she doesn’t speak until spoken too or she feels like it’s really important for her to say something
Honestly if this movie just had 5 more minutes to add a scene where we see the family after Mirabel is lost and the house is destroyed would have made this movie feel next level for me. I absolutely loved when abuela yelled at mirabel because it felt so raw and real. It’s the exact response that many parents and head of households would give to what they deem an “out of control” child. That sort of toxic response reminded me of my own family. Everything wrong is “because of you” not them. That’s why I was a little disappointed with the quick turn around of abuela and just the house getting restored so quickly afterwards. It would have been amazing not having mirabel in a scene for 5 minutes and just being able to see the damage from Abuela’s perspective. Her slowly realizing just how broken this family is because of her, without the magic getting in the way. She could have seen how worthless Lucia felt without her strength, or how her placing her ideals on flower girl was crushing her (maybe her even noticing how she didn’t like the romantic dude at all), or her seeing how devasted and panicked mirabel’s parents were. Or her seeing how dorales isn’t in pain anymore without the magic. Or her just seeing how entirely lost everyone was in who they were without their magic. And even a scene where abuela gets bombarded with questions of what to do now by everyone and it taking her back to how she felt before when her village was attacked and her husband lost. I feel like just a 5 minute scene establishing where the family was without mirabel and magic would have really put more depth on abuela, would have established how important mirabel is to the family even more so, and shown the thinking and processing abuela went through after her fight with mirabel and before meeting back up with her. I think it also would have made the backstory of abuela a lot less out of no where and there could have even been a cute line where she said that when the house was being destroyed she felt herself go back to when she was all alone after her husband died but she realizes that she’s not all alone cuz she has all of her family and the strong head mirabel there to help her. Idk I just feel like there was a part missing when the house was destroyed and everyone was just kinda there but we get nothing, just a cut to mirabel at the lake
This is 100% what the story needed. I felt the sudden mood shift between Abuela yelling at Mirabel and Abuela apologizing to Mirabel *hard*. Encanto needed five minutes to focus on the Madrigals' full reactions to losing their home and gifts, not just fifteen seconds of back dialogue and quick shots of 12 worried faces
I don’t think Abuela immediately changed her mind. Her facial expressions suggested she was shocked because either she had never thought about how she herself could impact the family, or she was shocked that someone would talk back to her when she’s the matriarch maybe. Anyways, it definitely took some time before she realized her own mistakes, which is the scene you’re probably asking for.
@@DoodleSamurai Except it isn't sudden. Her "mood shift" happens immediately after taking in that she's the reason the miracle is dying because she has no reason to believe otherwise. She isn't your average uncaring authoritarian -parent- matriarch, her actions are out of fear and confusion at what she thinks is Mirabel trying to hurt the family, and those words from here are a pretty big revelation that she has a whole night to mull over (okay maybe that should've been shown).
It’s normal for a parent to get upset with their kids behavior, especially when they are not listening or being flat out disrespectful, but to use demeaning language and constantly raising your voice, and not listening/ properly addressing your child’s concerns is a problem. It also doesn’t help to tell someone that “this is all your fault,” because even if it is, it’s not helping your relationship with your child at all. It will just alienate them more.
My friend kept saying that the ending was stupid because mirabel never got powers ,, that would make the ending stupid? Her family finally sees mirabel that’s enough she doesn’t need powers to be loved or accepted by her grandma, she is enough by herself.
I agree it's just sad since let's be honest there is going to be a sequel, and when it comes, Mirabel won't be as interesting if they actually leave the town, BTW in the sequel, I think someone will get sick, and they will need to find a cure.
Wait, didnt she get a gift actually? The casita, the front door of the casita, is her door. She is the glue of the family, thats her power. And one day probably replace the Abuela. The casita got cracks everytime Mirabel was angry or hurt because of her family, connection to the casita and family is her power
12:18 I just realized why Dolores didn’t hear the house crumbling: It’s because when Casita was falling apart, the magic was going wonky. Luisa noticed because she could feel her strength had gone poof in that moment, but the entire town and her family (minus Mirabel) was in Antonio’s room. It would’ve been super loud and crowded, so Dolores probably didn’t even realize her power had been muted (pun not intended).
She was also covering her ears due to how loud a party is to her, so there's all that noise near here that she's actively trying to ignore plus super hearing flickering
Pedro's love for his family was what created the magic in the first place. The magic died because they started to only value each other for their gifts. Once they remembered how much they loved each other outside of their gifts, their love brought the magic back. It's not that they still needed their gifts even though they had the power of family, the power of family created the magic both times. I love the song "All of You" because it's them learning that the miracle is each other, not the gifts.
It’s also a great direct contrast to the first song in the film. The first song only talks about their gifts and such, the last is all about them as a family
@@giga_chad9 true! The first song valued their gifts, and the last is all about being special in their own way. (Last song made me cry the first few listens ngl)
Just to clarify, the way the movie was written was heavelly based in a Latin-american literar genre called "magical realism", and in that genre the magical is just considered a "normal thing" like gravity and whatnot, so the magic is like a everyday thing and so doesn't need an explanation, most people don't know how gravity works we just know it's there and don't think much about it. So, putting the explanation of the magical to the side the story can focus on the character's journey and grow in a more natural way, experiencing his world the same way we experinence ours. That is not the best explanation but I think it can get the poin across. Btw, I don't know if it's because I am brazilian and I grew up with this type of storie, but I didn't feel the need of a explanation and loved everything else 10/10
I love that! it provides for the opportunity to create a magical world, without having to use up screentime on explanations which don't contribute to the purpose of the story
In my culture as well in Borneo, growing up hearing stories about spiritual beings, our ancestors believed in Animism before Christianity came. It's strange that we don't practice the same but we don't question the idea of 'magic' and we still celebrate these beliefs today.
The biggest issue with Dolores isn't even her powers not making sense it's the fact that during the dinner scene they tell us that like her character trair or whatever is that she can't keep a secret - she literally couldn't keep a huge family issue until after dinner or something - and yet she?? kept Bruno secret for like 10 years?????
Encanto isn't a princess movie. There's no princess, prince to marry, or even leader's daughter. Give Dolores a break btw, she heard these things, she just didn't tell anyone because she knew they wouldn't believe her.
@@apll9146 yes but abuela would most likely find a way to turn around against her if she spoke about it, and also you saw how mirabel was treated for just even breathing brunos name so for all we know dolores couldve been afraid of being an outcast of her family idk just my opinion
"or even leader's daughter" The Madrigal's CLEARLY have a leadership role in the encanto, and are the closest thing to a monarchy. And with Mirabel and Abuela being the only ones without gifts, it seems like Mirabel is next in line to be the matriarch of the Madrigals.
I feel like the lack of development for some characters is a good set up for a series. Like I want to know more about all these characters, their powers, how they adapt when casita is rebuilt and not to mention Bruno coming back to the family after 10 years?? Like c'mon Disney it would be stupid not to at this point.
I feel they may do something similar to Tangled series. That takes place in the time gap at ending of movie. That could be 1st season and then next season be about what happened after house finished
I believe that the director of Encanto told in an interview that they are thinking about making a series going in more about the family and other characters that didn’t have enough screen time. :D
Yeah they are definitely gonna do that, I feel like that's why there was a lack of development for some charaters so in a way they probably did it on purpose-
When I first heard Isabella’s verse I thought it was weird how she had the only positive sounding one, but after watching the movie 40,000 times it becomes apparent she thinks it’s a terrible one because she’ll either never truly be herself or she’s cursed to keep up this perfect facade for the rest of her life.
the thing about waiting on a miracle is that you really have to listen to it a few times to fall in love with it. when I watched the movie for the first time I thought it was alright, then later when I relistened to it I became obsessed lmao
One thing about "We Don't Talk About Bruno" that I didn't catch in theaters but I did rewatching the music video was actually how heartbreaking Isabella's prediction was. It sounds great since she is the only person who had a positive prediction from Bruno, but what caught my attention was the madrigal (music term) when Mirabel was assembling her prediction. Isabela sings "And I'm fine. And I'm fine" and that compared with the unattainable expectations from Abuela made me realize that Isabela probably kept wondering when the "life of her dreams" was going to start. I don't know when he made that prediction, but it had to be before Mirabel's gift ceremony. Just something I realized.
Also, it might be she was scared that Bruno made a misreading of her vision, that Mariano's the 'life of her dreams', and is scared that she wouldn't really love the idea of having that be her fate.
Not saying this isn’t a plot hole cause it is, BUUUT Dolores not hearing when casita started getting cracks & stuff could be explained by the fact that the doors were flickering when it was happening. At the end of the movie, once the doors start flickering & eventually go out they completely loose their powers.
Yeah I thought of that too, but then she follows it up with hearing Luisa's eye twitching all night, which was the same night Abuela said out loud that she was worried about the magic
@@beaniiebrian She can be, but I honestly like the plot holes lol. They aren’t destroying the movie in any notable fashion, and some of the best parts of Encanto is how open to interpretation and fan theories everything is. Sometimes plot holes just oughta be filled by the people looking into things. It’s funny how MatPat hasn’t clung to this movie’s leg and slobbered on it by now.
@@beaniiebrian or what I've been thinking is that the music and all the commotion that was going around Antonio's party drowns down her ability to hear farther away. Maybe she wasn't concentrating that much of the noises that are outside.
Dolores cannot hear anything when she’s in the room because apparently from the lead designer they made it so that the doors could avoid hearing things so she would have a more relaxed environment in fact she’s a person that whispers and covers your ears when things get too loud
She knows Mariano writes poetry every night I like the thought that she’s just sitting on a balcony risking all the noise just to her him 🥺 and that’s how she heard Luisa
Why antonio should tho?tbh the ending of all of you is better than a verbal apologizes, they are giving mirabel the regonization that she deservers,no every apoligizes need to he verbal, changes in behaivo are way more big
@@meme-bu8qu just isabela and abuela did that tho- every other mistake made by the other members of the family (like forgeting her in the photo or something) were pretty much unitencional and not malicious
I thought when the house came back to life, it was because of Mirabel. It made me think that the HOUSE, the cradle of the magic is HER. Watching it again, every time the house shows cracks is when Mirabel is stressed or upset, first showing up when she gets subconscious confirmation that she isn’t actually part of the family at Antonio’s ceremony the way the rest of the Madrigals are. The house gets worse the more she “sees the cracks” in the family roles, and tries to help or fix them and ultimately gets yelled at for changing the status quo (which is absolutely what happens with children in families who think differently and sees what expectations are hurting who and tries to say something about it). So I wasn’t at all mad that the magic came back at the end because it meant that Mirabel felt part of the family, FINALLY, and that’s what brought the magic back. Her gift IS the house!
Yeah. And plus, when she touched the candle, she touched her dress before opening the door, she touched HERSELF, WITH THE GIFT. Mirabel is now part of Casita ^^
Also, in We Don’t Talk About Bruno, the whole family says “He’s here!” This is obviously referring to Mariano showing up for the dinner, but can also be foreshadowing Bruno being in the walls.
Antonio dropping into the background when he did makes sense to me. He and Maribel had that strong relationship when they were roommates in the nursery. After he got his gift their relationship changed. Of course they still were family and still loved and cared about each other, but they weren't going to be close like they had been before. With the way the family saw things, he moved forward with his life while she stayed behind.
Literally the moment he got his gift abuela mentioned how he will have to work hard with it to earn their place in the encanto... He was missing for the movie for she did not want to drag her 5 year old cousin into danger and he had to work
When Mirabel “doesn’t get a gift,” she actually does get a gift. Her gift is Abuela’s gift that was pasted down because Abuela can’t live forever. A lot of you new this already
Agreed, I feel like the family misinterpreted the gift ceremony because of her not getting a room or an "active" power. Casita itself is her gift, she is the heiress of the Encanto.
I've actually come to believe that Casita/the magic intended for Mirabel to remain in the nursery because that's where she's needed. As the most empathetic of her entire family, she can guide and comfort the younger members as they face the unknown when they come of age and receive their own gift. The idea of her being not just the future matriarch of the Madrigals, but the living embodiment of the candle is even foreshadowed in her present to Antonio. On some level, she even knew that his gift would have to do with animals. She is in the nursery because that's where the family needs her and the needs of the family are what she most wants.
@@AustynSN if she had not been there Antonio would have been just as messed up as the rest, he is only sane and safe for she basicly raised him while everyone else was to budlsy serving the community!
This was honestly probably my favorite Disney movie, simply because of the genuine problems they show that happen in most large hispanic families, like issues with not speaking about how you feel in fear being criticized or belittled because “you shouldn’t feel that way, other people have it worse” as a means to ignore the way you feel, rather than confront it and help the person. This along with so many other issues with being in a large family where every person has a role and gets either everything they want, gets showed love the most, gets blamed for everything, the one who has the burden of having everyone’s problems being pushed onto them so they can solve it, the one who struggles to know who they truly are and only replicates what they see in the family, the “perfect” person in the family who everyone compares themself to which obviously the “perfect” on has the hardship of keeping that reputation and doing everything right, the emotional one who gets overwhelmed easily, or just quiet one who prefers not to speak because they’ve never been believed, or always thought to be lying for attention, along with so many other problematic roles that most hispanic family’s have. I absolutely love that they genuinely showed these traits in different characters that fit along with their gifts; as much as I’d love to have them go more in depth with different characters and their specific struggles, thoughts and feelings, i don’t blame them so much just due to have so many characters with limited screen time and budget. Claps to you my friend for the commentary though! Honestly couldn’t get enough with your videos! Can’t wait for the next reaction video! Edit: spelling/grammar
@Ꮮ 2002 bruno is the kinda person that would blame himself for some problems and bruno knew her sister personality and still decided to make a joke about it im not blaming bruno it wasn't his fault and i think was more mad about bruno leaving rather than ruining her wedding
MatPat has a theory that Dolores is actually going insane from being able to hear literally everything all the time and is actively working to destroy the magic, which explains a lot of the information she withholds
I think she was just always told to keep her mouth shut about the things she hears all the time as a child and that just made her really soft spoken. That and she didn't want to see her beloved fall in love with her cousin who implicitly did not want to get married. "DON'T TALK ABOUT BRUNO"
Antonio's relationship with Mirabel doesn't get ignored just because they stop hanging out as much - even after his powers he's doing everything he can to be LIKE her, acting as a caretaker the same way she does by offering his room for Bruno's vision, and also passing his stuffed animal along to him as he needs it more. He completely idolises Mirabel and wants to grow up to be just like that. I also love during the Casita's collapse how it uses the last of its strength to rip key parts of itself off to build a small shell around Mirabel so she doesn't get injured.
Yeah, all the way we are showen what massiv impact she had on him and he returns her support of leading him to his door what he was to afraid to go by himself in the end!
And it's quite scary having that implication, because it makes sense. One's a medic, one manipulates the battlefield, one sees the future and preps for it, one can act as recon, one can act as a spy, one's literally a tank, one's can also control the battlefield via foliage and has medical and battle capabilities (basically a swiss army knife), and one can use animals as another form of recon. Not to mention that Pepa's side of the familiy specialises on spycraft while Julieta's has military essentials.
@@Vekcrazah yeah, my concept of there powers all related to life or blend together some how..how Juliet Isabella Peppa and Antonio all relate to nature and growth. Weather, nature, animals food/nourishment. While the others are enhanced ablities. Louisa with her super strength Camilla with his ability to basically shapeshift and then the Lord has her ability to hear everything
I like the theory of Dolores wanting the magic to fail so her awful gift of hearing every secret and loud noise in the town will go away. Also, her love would no longer be pressured to marry to Isabela.
I honestly believe Encanto did an excellent job, especially with a huge cast. I think they handled each character...surprisingly well. Antonio, Camilo, and Dolores aren't the main characters of the story so I expected the level of depth the characters would get in the movie. But again, they handled it pretty well because you have a sense of who each character is and each of their personalities. In the opening song, Mirabel explains how Camilo does everything in his power to make others laugh, and throughout the whole movie, from start to "what is that? Not a house." He was the comedic character. It was also heartwarming in the end to see Antonio being the one to walk Mirabel to "her" door as she did for him at the beginning of the movie. Still emphasizing the close bond between him and Mirabel. Dolores not telling everyone about Bruno being in the walls of the house, could be explained in the song "we don't talk about Bruno," where she says "It's a heavy lift with a gift so humbling." I'm not 100% positive if she was referring to Bruno's gift here or her own, but it would make sense that she understood the pressures Bruno felt with his ability, and so left him to do as he pleased...also I'm still curious to know if she has the ability to turn her powers on and off at will. It would be odd if she was the only one in the family who couldn't(but I guess you could argue Antonio, Julieta, and Pepa's gifts...though if Pepa focused she could "stop" her powers). Even when Abuela asked Dolores about Mariano's incoming proposal, it seemed as though she had to focus...but who knows. I enjoyed the fact that our main character didn't have to go on some grand expedition and it focused mainly on the family, within the home. I loved the deep and relatable themes, ranging from generational traumas to anxiety(family, world, and self pressures/expectancies). If I could describe the movie in one word it would be "relatability," despite its obvious fantastical elements. Overall great animation, great actors/singers, great characters, great songs, great themes...Great movie.

@@crist3809 Sir, it’s a Disney movie made for children. A movie that deals with family, and the issues/conflicts within a family. @@crist3809 I guess we have two definitions of the word conflict. Conflict does not fall under a single category of something fantastical or life threatening, it can also deal with the emotional struggles of a family. The laziness or the plainness you felt watching, was just the reality of actual family issues. It’s subtle, if everyone could see/tell a toxic relationship no one would be in one. Like I said before the reason I loved this movie was because it felt the most realistic, the magical element was almost not a factor. We stayed in the house and focused on helping the family. In life you are more than likely not going to have to defeat a big villain, or traverse a whole continent to find out where your magic came from. I wouldn’t want you wasting your money either, so maybe do a little more research before watching a movie. It was fun chatting but I have to go to work now, have a good day.

15:54 for her. That vision wasn’t a good thing. Because the life she wanted/of her dreams wasn’t perfect. And she thought the only thing that could make her family proud was being perfect. See what I mean?
It was and it wasn't, at the same time. She said "the life of my dreams", which sounds like it did mean the life she wanted. The reason she wasn't happy is that she thought the vision *wasn't* coming true, with Mariano on his way to propose to her that night and her feeling like she had to accept.
@@dbseamz I’m pretty sure she was just singing that to hide the way she actually feels. Isabella never wanted to be perfect, but felt she had to be because Abuela viewed her gift that way and she didn’t want to let her down.
@@dbseamz I mean in all the time when Isabela is singing her part you can how her face changes when she’s up and nobody can see her (frowning her eyebrows and looking really sad about it but when she descends to a part where she can be seen her face changes to a happy-neutral one and in the end of the song she sings: I’m fine, I’ll be fine along Dolores (you can see her face here being sad too) so, yeah she wasn’t happy with her future, she was just making what everyone expected of her and more what her abuela expect her to do. Probably thinking that doing so would make her prediction true.
This ended up being my favorite Disney movie. I personally loved Waiting On A Miracle and liked it better than Surface Pressure. Unfortunately they had to cut alot of scenes to keep it under 2 hours. But after Antonio got his gift, he was supposed to help Mirabel get to Bruno's room through his room. There was also supposed to be a memorial for Pedro that was healing for abuela and the family but it got cut and instead it only showed art of it in the credits. The time limit is also why the endings a bit rushed. I think a series could show way more.
I wouldn't just say that it's everyone's powers simply acting up because of the house breaking, I have reason to believe that everyone with the exception of Luisa was still in full control of their powers; It's the characters themselves that were having a panik attack after hearing the news in whisper-down-the-lane fashion from Dolores. Camilo doesn't just turn into random people, when he 'glitches out,' you see him transform into Mirabel and Bruno; which are the two subjects of the extremely saucy bit of news he just received. So obviously, they're on his mind. Félix does a spit take, which is equally as disruptive, because of the truth bomb he just received. If he had powers they would have glitched out too. Pepa's powers, as previously established, are heavily influenced by her emotional state. After hearing that her NIECE MET UP WITH BRUNO (after literally just having a whole musical number about not talking about Bruno), AND NOW THE HOUSE IS GOING TO FALL APART AND IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HER FAULT, of course she's going to fuck up the weather and generate a mini cumulonimbus over her side of the dinner table. And OF COURSE she's not going to be able to soothe herself with "Clear skies~" after hearing this terrifying AND INFURIATING news. Luisa's powers seemed to have a bit of a head-start in the 'fading away' department, as she opened up to her little sister first and her door was the only one seen flickering. She was the only one at that point who was able to express to themselves (and Mirabel) that they feel their powers are more like a familial burden and that they wish they didn't have such heavy expectations. (We later learn that Isabela does feel the exact same way, but such feelings were likely subconscious until the musical number she had with Mirabel, *after* the dinner. Isabela wishes she didn't have to sacrifice so much of her own personality just to be Perfect, and we see after she learns to 'let it go' so to speak, she's genuinely a happier and more genuine person despite everything happening.) Luisa feeling weak despite her own insane strength, became a vicious cycle as her quickly fading confidence compounded on itself to the point that she couldn't even move a piano anymore.
@@sidneysaldevia81 also at times you see her covering her ears to mute the noise so i doubt she notice she power going off if she was covering her ears at the party cause remember it would most likely be a nightmare because of how loud it is
One thing about Encanto having a wide cast means that there are too MANY possibilities for the plot to go. I think I see a Disney series -The pressures that come with taking over as the head of the family for Mirabel. -Luisa could probably still have some hangups about shouldering the majority of the family's burdens. -Isabella's struggle to find purpose in her gift. (She was forced to make flowers before, but now she can make anything, but what SHOULD she make, and why?) -Pepa being forced to control her emotions every moment of every day. -Julieta having to make food every time someone is hurt and that being her only purpose. -Antonio being unsure of what his powers mean and how it can benefit those around him. -Camilo feeling that he can never truly be himself around others because he always has to show off his gift. -Dolores dealing with the burden of her over hearing (or maybe trying to find a partner who is okay with her knowing everything about them) -Bruno being excommunicated from the family. Not to mention everyone else who DOESN'T have a gift and how they feel or integrate with the family.
I think there is a lot of deep meaning in Encanto. There is an underlying focus on mental health and the dysfunction in family/human relationships, the psychological toll on each person. The Madrigals often claim to be "fine" (how many times was that one word said?) despite falling apart on the inside. This includes the "perfect golden child" Isabela, who says it during We Don't Talk About Bruno (subtle hint: she's not fine, even with her "perfect" life). Mirabel I believe is meant to inherit Casita and the Encanto Miracle from her Abuela, keeping the family blessing going strong even when Alma gets old and presumably dies (she's already at least 68-70, judging by the fact that her kids are 50). The "failed" gift ceremony may actually hint at this: Mirabel doesn't get a room because the whole house will be hers. Some day future Madrigal kids will get their gifts from Abuela Mirabel (or Tia Mirabel, or Cousin Mirabel). Mirabel seems to have a rather psychic link to Casita as well. During the opening sequence the house actually helps Mirabel set the table, rolling the plates right to her so that she barely has to do anything at all. And this happens while she is having an entire conversation with the coffee-geeked kids from town. Mirabel didn't need to ask, Casita just did exactly what she needed at the moment. Abuela is the only other Madrigal who we know can interact with Casita so directly (i.e., why wouldn't Luisa just ask the house to move the piano for her if she could, other than possibly pride?). Mirabel is primed to take over for Alma when Abuela is elderly and later deceased. And with her empathy towards the needs of her family, she can do it better than her Abuela did, as well as showing them all a better way.
What I love in encanto, it is not framed as anyone's fault, no one wanted to harm anyone and everyone is treated with a lot of empathy. People rarely ever hurt us out of maliciousness, but Ignoranz and being wrapped up in their own shit. What they need is to communicate, not play a game of who is to blame! Julietta clearly loves mirabel to pieces, but that does not change that shè fails to be there for her in a meaningful way for example
Yep and the magic returned, because everyone especially Abuela Alma learned the true value of the gift and that is their family itself. Plus, Mirabel didn't exactly forgive Abuela Alma but she is more than willing to try. Damn, Encanto did it better than the Last of Us 2.
Even though the rest of the family had little screen time, you can see little moments of their characters getting fleshed out, like Felix giving antonio a thumbs up when he asked the animals to warm up abuela's seat, or when the magic died Camilo's first thought was "What about antonio?" showing how much he cared for his brother, (also every scene that shows Felix as one of the best disney dads ever), and all those little things in the background. Also Camilo was supposed to have an identity crisis in the original plot but that sub-plot was cut out sadly, but it would have made a lot of since and would have given him a song and given him more character growth.
Why didn't you mention Bruno not getting the proper apology he deserves??? He spent 10 years hiding for Mirabel's sake and was villainized by many people (INCLUDING some of the townspeople)! Mariano is a good guy, not a self-centred douchebag, he just falls in love easily, so I don't get the red flag. Dolores was pretty excited to finally have Mariano.
Mirabel is not a princess! Her family isn't royalty, nor are they the local equivalent the way Pocahontas and Moana are daughters of chiefs. (Okay, Abuela sort of runs the town, but "granddaughter of a mayor" is not even close to royalty.) Mirabel has no love interest, meaning she doesn't gain royal status through marriage either. And while Mulan is considered a princess despite not being either of these, she was kind of given honorary status by the Emperor himself after saving the entire empire of China. Mirabel sort of restores her entire town, but again that's not a big enough scale--she's from Colombia and the at-the-time ruler of Colombia never interacted with her at all, let alone in a ceremonial way like Mulan and the emperor.
@@4ngiel0ver yes, that’s the wording Disney uses. But since most Disney protags are heroic I think the emperor thing played into it too-otherwise Jane from Tarzan, Honey Lemon and Gogo from BH6, and Nani from Lilo and Stitch would all be called princesses too.
No idea abt their threshold, but BH6 made a similar amout to moana, they just didnt make em princesses probably so they could sell them as baddass feminist bitches or some shit
Mirabel's on the list of Disney Princesses off of the wiki and that's literally all we need to know. Unless Disney themselves confirm/deny it, she's a Disney princess.
I think that Dolores was actually referring to Mariano when she said ‘i can hear him now’, there’s also a few foreshadowing lines throughout the movie that’s she knew Bruno was there the entire time.
I think she really was referring to Bruno that time. My reasoning is that before she says "I can hear him now", she says " _it's like I hear him now_ " -- and generally such a phrase implies that the person in question is not there, and isn't gonna show up any time soon, in the way that Mariano is about to. We're not supposed to know Bruno is there, so it works. I can think of a couple movie quotes like, "I can almost hear him speaking to me now"; "it's as if in this moment he's right here with us"; "at times I still hear his voice/see him" etc. where "he" is a character that died, left or went missing, and remains in the heart and mind of the speaker still. This usually is done to be funny cuz the "dead" character is right there, somehow unnoticed by the speaker, but there are plenty of sad/serious scenes where they say this sort of thing. Obviously when Bruno is revealed to be living in Casita, we realize Dolores probably legit "can hear him now". But before learning that, her verse "it's like I hear him now" might serve to illustrate the fresh relevance of what Bruno told her long ago, as at that moment the man of her dreams arrives to get engaged to her sister.
i think that "its like i hear him now" its bruno saying that repeating in her head, due to the fact that shes anxious about marianos proposal to isabela
I really wanna know why they thought he never cared about the family. Yeah he may have seen terrible things about the future BUT THATS HIS GIFT. HE CANNOT CONTROL WHATEVER THE MIRACLE GIVES HIM.
With the "I want" princess song, I think it's less of a "I WANT" and more of a beg of finally feeling like she would be included in her family, finally gain the love and respect she's longed for ever since her gift ceremony failed. Everyone got it automatically through the miracle, except her. She isn't wanting something more in life, she wants what the rest of her family has, what she was stripped of thanks to the miracle itself.
I feel like casita is a sort of way to express what mirabel's feeling so when she get back together with her family casita also get back (alive??) Idk lol or maybeee her power is the relationship between her family and her, the front door of casita also shows the madrigals together when mirable putting the doorknob so yep my brain can't last long on this one
In all honesty it fits perfectly with what’s going on. The family is screaming for Mirabel to get away from the danger, even at the expense of the Candle. They value her life over the candles. In the same way they value their family’s lives over a portrait.
Agreed, Tangled is way better than Encanto What do you thinks a better movie? A retelling of a fairy tale with epic graphics, epic characters with an epic villain Or a magical family being scared of some drunk dude living behind some walls
@@Lalaloopsies_United Both are very good. Tangled is probably the better movie overall, but Encanto has better music and more memorable characters. Plus, people can relate to Encanto more, but I do like tangled.
All the characters and their gifts do in fact serve the plot of the movie. Each character, their personality, how they use their gift and how they are treated by Abuela Alma according to their gift or lack of gift, enriches and deepens the overall story of generational trauma. Also, Dalores' gift is that she can hear everything at all times. Like being in a crowded train station with everyone talking at the same time. You can clearly hear what one person is saying if you focus your attention on them. That is why Dalores can hear some things and not others. And she definitely didn't hear the house cracking during the party because all of the family members gifts were weakened at that moment.
Tangled is still the best. Characters are so lively, the music is catchy and they finally did something unique with the world instead of making it a single scene movie. I love that iteration of Rapunzel
I wonder if Dolores was fine with the magic vanishing because it meant she would know peace (normal hearing). She wouldn't proactively stop her family from saving the magic, and gave Mirabel clues because her cousin *wanted* to know. But if no one asked her, she would let things run their course.
Yeah, also, she was in a fucking party at the time that happened, try hear anything when you are already compleatly drowning in noise, it's a wonder she did not just faint
I'd like to critique your apparent "critique": 1. The crack could not be heard because Mirabel was most likely having a premonition or dream. The directors ensured there wasn't a barrier between reality and the dream, putting us in Mirabel's shoes; like Mirabel, we question whether it's real or not. 2. Dolores could not hear a lot of plot relevant things because she has taught herself to filter things out; it will be extremely overwhelming to hear everything at once. 3. The reason Antonio was not involved in Mirabel's life right after he gets his power is important, as it further spotlights Mirabel's loneliness and her family's negligence towards her. Once Antonio gets his own room and powers, he has no need for Mirabel. 4. Your title is misleading. You said you loved the movie while pointing out very few things that don't make sense, but proceeded to title it "Encanto DOESN'T make sense". I guess this is to attract traffic but still. 5. One movie critique that I found in the comment section that I agree is in regards to Abuela's sudden change in mannerism that doesn't make too much sense. It would be far more impactful if the directors emphasise the responsibilities of Mirabel in the family; when Mirabel left, if the family members suddenly bombard Abuela with questions, hesitations, and emotions, Abuela would realise her family is long broken even with the magic, and understand Mirabel's point of view in the fight prior to the house's collapse and Mirabel's part in the family.
the alternate story was Mirabell learns early that she will destroy the magic and didn't get a gift for no reason and turns spiteful. she destroys the magic on purpose.
Frankly, "Waiting on a Miracle" is one of the BEST "I want" songs imo, because its particularly relatable to people with self-confidence/self-worth struggles. All the other ones are neat and all, but don't feel even remotely as personal. They're all about "I want to do more in life," while Mirabel's is "If I had a gift, then maybe I could finally feel like I matter."
I heard people say that isabela and camilo was actually trying to stop mirabel to save her (Idk the source i just saw a comment abt it) and maybe about dolores not hearing is that there were too much celebration and abuela just wrnt to the candle and because of the noise in antonio's room dolores couldnt hear it?? And heard luisa's eye twitch when the party was over
@@Vionnea Yeah, at that point it kinda gets so dark that you only really know she’s swinging in the general direction of the candle/Mira/Camilo. My headcanon? Her first instinct is to go to the candle, but she quickly repressed it to grab Mirabel first, hoping to grab the candle as well.
This movie is honestly tied with Coco for one of the best movies Disney has ever made. The animation, the realistic characters, the music. It's nice to know that Disney is still occasionally capable of putting out original stuff and not just soul sucking remake dribble that does nothing for nobody.
@@gagiibaaji2774 Disney animation studios and Disney-pixar studios are two completely different studios employing completely different people if thats what you mean. Just owned by the same mega corpoation. It's as if youre saying marvel movies are made by the same people. Then i guess you can add maybe infinity war into one of the best disney films ever made.
Bruno had me thinking: so many men in history were feared as sinister and mischievous, secretly plotting the downfall of everyone around them and manipulating circumstance to their favor. I wonder how much of that is just perception, and if meeting any of them will reveal them to just be socially awkward dorks (possibly with OCD?) who were just doing their best despite how everyone saw them.
If Luisa was feeling weak it safe to assume that other's magic was acting up, so Delores power could have stopped working then... and not to mention Abuela and Mirabel were both awake while everyone else was supposed to be asleep. Also when the cracks were happening there was a LOUD party going on.... and even if we don't consider the party I'm sure she could easily write off the sound of cracking to the earth shifting, or rocks breaking, all of which would have been in range. "Why didn't you hear this conversation you living wire tap?!" Delores: "Sorry for being a human and having human needs".
Some of the magic 'weakness' is mental, I think. Luisa had been carrying the weight of the family on her for a long time and as such, the first to 'crack' in a sense. Mirabel confronting her about the magic weakening just sent that into overdrive.
I think Dolores gift works pretty consistently. She wouldn’t have heard the house coming apart because the miracle was fading out for a few moments, ie Luisa felt weak and such. And I feel like with such a powerful gift she might hyperfocus on certain sounds, so when luisa’s eye was twitching that’s all she could focus on at that moment. And while I would’ve loved more fleshed out characters, especially with Camilo, who’s identity crisis was a scrapped story line, there’s only so much you can include in a limited time frame for a movie.
I agree, thought they did give the spotlight to enough characters in my opinion. First Antonio, then Luisa, Bruno, after him Isabela and Abuela, also Mirabel of course, I do feel they could have had fit one more family member in if they shortened/deletrd some less important scenes, like per example, Bruno's room could have been a lot shorter and It wouldn't have changed much.
Maybe Dolores couldn't hear the house breaking because it was like a VISION to Mirabel of what would happen in the future. It wasn't happening YET as remember, after she told everyone the candle almost went out they found the house alright and nothing wrong with it.
Maribel did got a gift: Healing Factor and in the sequel she will get adamantium skeleton and claws; there, I said it, it's official, my uncle works at Nintendo. Trust me.
Luisa said that when the house was cracking she felt weak so we can assume the same thing happened to Dolores or however you spell it. Also, we see that the house can’t effect the inside of rooms so we can assume that the window frame is technically a part of it he grandma’s room
12:12 personally I think that Dolores' gift is like an on command thing, like a light switch, cause in the scene where Abuela asks Dolores if they have dinner with Mariano she lifts her ear up to the sky(presumably 'activating' her gift) and she says what she hears, so she probably wasn't listening in to not ruin Antonio's big night. Just my thoughts, great video! Edit: so uh from watching people talk about Dolores more I have come to realize it is NOT something that's on command. From extra details from her portion of we don't talk about Bruno being almost entirely whispers, to her doing finger clapping cause regular clapping is like ear-rape turned up by 20 with fireworks cause she has to put her hands over her ears when people are cheering and clapping for Antonio receiving his gift. So uh, yeah its not on command.
Really? As someone who was born in Brazil it is very common here, like we all here have an annoying cousin or brother who just messes with everyone, playing tricks and such, and Camilo seems to be that type of cousin/brother, and this mockery I've seem a lot, where a girl is dating someone and he says: tá namorando!, tá namorando! (She's dating! she's dating! Something like that) embarrassing the girl, or another one where he imitates the person she's dating (like Camilo) making fun of him doing the kissy mouth, and normally it's just a prank and him acting goofy, not with something suggestive but that's just my opinion.
(20:40) I agree. I would have liked to see the other family members tell Alma about how they really feel. I know Mirabel is the one Alma hurt the most, but she caused a lot of pain to the entire family. It would be nice to see them backing Mirabel's words and would have made the final river scene seem so abrupt.
12:09 Luisa said that she felt weak when this whole thing happened, so probably Dolores also lost her gift, but she didn't notice it because of the party around her.
WHEN YOU SAID THAT TANGLED WAS THE BEST PRINCESS MOVIE I SAID THIS: this man knows what he is talking about and i respect and fully validate his opinion because tangled is a cinematic masterpiece and no other movie can top its visuals and songs and plot (encantos a close second tho)
i also loved the fact that they made the story revolve around the casita and not making the protagonist go somewhere far because ultimately the problem is inside the house and inside the family - the generational trauma and familial pressure.
the scene that the house is falling apart is very interesting, the people with gifts in the family tried to save the miracle while just fails because they are losing the gifts, but Mirabel is the only person that reached the candle. It was like, she doesn't need powers to do the things cause she naturally live without a gift, so shes used to do the things in the hard way, while the madrigals that have a gift dont rlly know how to deal with things without the powers. "The easy way is not always the best way" or something like that u know?
adding to that i feel like casita knew that mirabel was like the one "destined" to fix the underlying strife the family had within their collective relationships and wasn't actually letting the other family members help because casita wanted it to be mirabel
It’s shown when Agustín (another without gifts) and Julieta try to reach Mirabel, the Casita intentionally pushes them out of the building- to protect them. Better than anyone else, both Mirabel and the Casita understand one another. When Mirabel says “Casita get me up there,” the Casita knows that Mirabel won’t stop until she has the candle. It takes every effort to protect her with the last of its magic from the breaking house. Funnily enough, I think Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno all would be happier without their gifts.
My family are all immigrants from Greece, Macedonia, and the Balkans. They gave up everything and even changed our last name at Ellis island so we could fit in more. We gave up our culture, our religion, and even our origins in order to come to America. After a huge fight between me and my γιαγιά(grandma in Greek) similar to that of Alma and Mirabel’s in July of 2021, I found comfort in this movie when I couldn’t visit my dad for two years (because he lives with her). My father really didn’t do anything about this ongoing issue until December of 2022 when I showed him this movie. Greeks have a tendency to sweep family problems under the rug until it hurts people(we’re also all very autistic so it makes communication harder). We all cried and held each other when the two make up at the end. Encanto still continues to be my favorite movie because it helped mend my family back together. It helped my family recognize the cycle of generational trauma and grief: one that we have chipped away at for almost the past year. I know it has helped many other families who have stories like mine, especially in the Latino and POC communities where it is nearly ingrained into their day to day life. I am so glad I happened to come across this channel, and I hope you have a wonderful week. 🧿
It still grinds my gears that the movie sets Mirabel up like she should just be ok with YEARS of emotional torture from her grandma. Past trauma does not make it okay to inflict it on others. Alma needed help and on one could really help her but for Mirabel to just be like "sure grandma lets just let the past be the past" left a bad taste in my mouth.
I think she forgave her because she saw how much the past hurt her. I mean she realized why her grandma did the stuff she did and how much trauma she experienced while being alone the entire time with no family expect her kids who can’t do much. I would probably be a little bit forgiving as well and wanna make amends as well
@@Br00ke291 Im all here for forgiving people who you know is ready to change, but the fact that Mirabel apologizes to Alma for not helping before is toxic AF and even more emotion al toture. If they just changed it to Mirabel not forgiving her grandma right away but still giving her a chance to change and then forgiving her later would be an amazing lesson for kids. That forgiveness does not come easy and that you have to prove that you a going to change. Letting young people with abusive families feel like their feelings are invalid right after their abuser says that they are sorry is very damanging
The whole time the resolution was happening, I was so worried that it would turn out like Raya and the Last Dragon, where certain wording that could have easily been altered ended up tanking the whole movie's message for me, but I think Encanto thankfully avoided that problem with Mirabel's line of "There's nothing broken that we can't fix together." That way, it feels less like Alma is being let off the hook for the years of emotional baggage she left on her family, and more like Mirabel is giving her the opportunity to fix her mistakes and reassuring that her family will be there to help her every step of the way.
22:55 I actually like that they got what they wanted Gifted people shouldn't have to lose their gifts to be appreciated as people so if they lost it it would kind of damage the lesson of the film yknow
i personally love the fact that abuela alma is so fuckin scary in the start of the movie. makes you really able to feel what it's like to be a kid with a disapproving family member in a position of power over you- it IS scary and makes you worried how they'll view your every action, and you can GET that with the fear you feel when abuela interacts with mirabel, it really puts you directly in her shoes. then when you grow up, if you talk to them and understand them, instead of being scary they feel like... a person. a person who may have fucked up a lot, as people oft do, but a person. that shift in feeling with the character just felt really realistic to me.
I have a little of my own criticism for encanto such as: the characters need more detail, the ending was rushed, there is no clear way of knowing if abuela just repeated what happened, and overall I just want to see more of the characters because there was some… confusion.
Actually, for the Abuela one, u actually do know that she won't repeat what happened. Otherwise, Luisa wouldn't be relaxing at the end of the movie, Pepa wouldn't be able to have a cloud there while dancing, and Isabella wouldn't be able to have a colorful dress.
I would honestly have loved a 3 hour movie with a song for each character and I would have liked a scene where Bruno yells at abuela a ton like with Mirabel but other than that I agree with you on the 9/10.
The argument between Abuela and Mirabel definitely was one of the most intense arguments in Disney; it makes you feel like you're in the middle of the fight. The voice actors did such a good job, and the animation of the characters conveyed the mood perfectly
Personally I think the side characters don't NEED to drive the story along in order for them to be written well. It's the main character's job to do so . Mirabel is the one who drives the plot NOT the side characters so I don't see it as a necessity for the side characters to do much in the story as it takes away from Mirabel's journey. And that being said I think the subtle ways the movie shows how abuela's pressure and expectations can be damaging to the characters (like pepa's frequent overthinking and Dolores having to listen to the man she loves talk about having babies with her cousin and Mirabel's mother having to constantly remind Mirabel that she is worth it and Bruno having to deal with alienation) by the way they interact with Mirabel is quite smart actually. Not to mention the fact that characters like Camilo have their own unique personalities which is why he is a fan favorite without actually doing too much which can take away from the story's themes surrounding the relationship between her and abuela as well as Bruno and abuela But I do think that Bruno's arc was too abrupt and the fact that everyone accepted him just like that (especially Pepa) despite having sung a whole song about how they don't talk about him. It made sense for abuela to accept him ( because of her arc at the end) thought
i honestly dont think pepa (or anyone else in the family) genuinely didnt like bruno. sure, she may have been bitter about her wedding but she has a considerably larger amount of pressure on her to keep her emotions in check and act in accordance with abuela, who has seemingly dictated that bruno shouldnt be mentioned since all the villagers see his gift as bad. and apparently camilo is supposed to be around the same age as mirabel (assuming people are getting that from the art book or extra info about the movie shared by the people who worked on it), anything he would know about bruno would be from word of mouth from the older people in his life and hes just being showy and making bruno seem scary and evil. i thought pepa and julieta immediately rushing to hug bruno was a very sweet moment
raya sucked tbh, it’s not appealing, the colour palette it’s pretty dark giving a sense of sadness, raya is a mulan wannabe, not interesting at all…encanto is super entertaining, aesthetically pleasing, the songs were a 10/10, storytelling and message very necessary and also it’s based on a different culture, what else can you ask for???
Wild take. I thought Raya was a lot more engaging due to the change of setting and fully fleshed characters. Also, if anything, raya was a avatar the last airbender wanna be, not a Mulan wannabe.
@@frostfeather6584 Raya and fully fleshed out characters should not belong in the same sentence The moment the movie was done, I already forgot the names of the characters that weren't Raya or Namaari (and I remember Namaari for how infuriating her character was)

The most unrealistic part of this movie was Abuela apologizing lmao.
pretty sure the reason dolores couldn’t hear the house cracking is because the doors were flickering and everyone’s powers weren’t working (like luisa feeling weak).
edit: yes i understand that the party being loud could’ve been a contributing factor, i was just suggesting an idea
Oooooooh you’ve got a point there
Lmao, I think that she was just overwhelmed with the party? Like jeez, there's a party with music and drunk people (probably) yelling over each other.
She’s also in a room full of people, they’re all playing music and dancing so there’s a lot of noise
@@Cherry-Explosion (probably not)
Also one of the animators of the movie revealed that Dolores's room is soundproof so that could explain how she didn't hear abuela talk about the miracle dying, although it doesn't always work.
He was accepted back in no questions asked.
fr for some reason he apologied to them o_o
@@glugging It's his trauma speaking, actually! When you're basically raised in abuse you it becomes a reflex to internalise that guilt and preemptively apologise to avoid getting yelled at.
What his sisters did by interrupting him and saying "it's alright" is them making amends in their own way (re: my first comment in this thread)
They're basically telling him "it's okay, it's not your fault, we're just happy you're here again and we miss you" and his heart must have been close to bursting at that moment.
What I liked about Encanto was that Mirabel wasn’t fixed but rather accepted
In the end instead of making her save the magic and become the most powerful and respected, they had the family stop giving her unrealistic expectations and just accepted her for who she was even if she didn’t have a gift

@@frauleinzuckerguss1906 and they did do quite a bit of extra story telling through symbolism with Pepa.
Disney: We don’t talk about Camilo
I feel like Dolores hears everything and nothing. She's probably become kinda good at ignoring what she's hearing when she's having fun or she hears so much that it tunes out somethings

I don't know but what about she hears luisas's eyes twitching???
@Anne Elyssa Hernandez she could have meant for the rest of the party. Like "she danced with Joe all night"
I really hope she has a soundproof room because honestly, especially as an autistic with sensory issues, her “gift” sounds like hell.

I would agree with you however Delores spilling the beans during dinner has me disagreeing her not trying to ruin the family’s image.

They probably were tight on time to be honest

Also she is probably to scared to stand up to Abeula (not sure if I spelled it right)

"or even leader's daughter" The Madrigal's CLEARLY have a leadership role in the encanto, and are the closest thing to a monarchy. And with Mirabel and Abuela being the only ones without gifts, it seems like Mirabel is next in line to be the matriarch of the Madrigals.

That's what I thought too! It began to dawn on me right at the scene when she yelled at Abuela I was like,
"Oh my gosh! Is that her gift?! Sweet!" XD
She also has the closest relationship with La Casita!
Yeah. And plus, when she touched the candle, she touched her dress before opening the door, she touched HERSELF, WITH THE GIFT. Mirabel is now part of Casita ^^

The double meaning of the lyrics is so clever. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

When Mirabel “doesn’t get a gift,” she actually does get a gift. Her gift is Abuela’s gift that was pasted down because Abuela can’t live forever.
A lot of you new this already
Exactly! Throughout the entire movie, only 2 people can talk to and understand Casita, Abuela and Mirabel.
Agreed, I feel like the family misinterpreted the gift ceremony because of her not getting a room or an "active" power. Casita itself is her gift, she is the heiress of the Encanto.

Honestly after seeing Mirabel's room situation in comparison to her siblings, I think Casita should be brought down into the "deserved" tier

If you watched strictly for conflict, I don’t think Disney would be the best choice, since story is really the big focus for a Disney animation. Again made for children. If that wasn’t good enough for you I apologize and I suggest you branch out away from Disney. You’re entitled to your own opinion. I loved the movie, you did not.

@@dbseamz or, she's scared that the vision was misread, but had to act happy because it's 'what she's needed by the family'
It kind of makes sense because during the party at the beginning, everybody’s powers weren’t working right
I wouldn't just say that it's everyone's powers simply acting up because of the house breaking, I have reason to believe that everyone with the exception of Luisa was still in full control of their powers; It's the characters themselves that were having a panik attack after hearing the news in whisper-down-the-lane fashion from Dolores.
Isabela wishes she didn't have to sacrifice so much of her own personality just to be Perfect, and we see after she learns to 'let it go' so to speak, she's genuinely a happier and more genuine person despite everything happening.)
Luisa feeling weak despite her own insane strength, became a vicious cycle as her quickly fading confidence compounded on itself to the point that she couldn't even move a piano anymore.
Also it's a PARTY of course it's gonna be noisy when theirs constant music along with unending steps it's a *miracle* Dolores didn't faint
I think I see a Disney series
-The pressures that come with taking over as the head of the family for Mirabel.
-Luisa could probably still have some hangups about shouldering the majority of the family's burdens.
-Isabella's struggle to find purpose in her gift. (She was forced to make flowers before, but now she can make anything, but what SHOULD she make, and why?)
-Pepa being forced to control her emotions every moment of every day.
-Julieta having to make food every time someone is hurt and that being her only purpose.
-Antonio being unsure of what his powers mean and how it can benefit those around him.
-Camilo feeling that he can never truly be himself around others because he always has to show off his gift.
-Dolores dealing with the burden of her over hearing (or maybe trying to find a partner who is okay with her knowing everything about them)
-Bruno being excommunicated from the family.
Exactly, it's all there if one cares to look!
When will my reflection show ...who I am ..insiiiide

Why didn't you mention Bruno not getting the proper apology he deserves??? He spent 10 years hiding for Mirabel's sake and was villainized by many people (INCLUDING some of the townspeople)! Mariano is a good guy, not a self-centred douchebag, he just falls in love easily, so I don't get the red flag. Dolores was pretty excited to finally have Mariano.
The red flag was in reference to deloras. Not him. He was calling her a stalker.
@@NeggieKnight I'm not calling her a stalker. I was just saying that's what he's talking about.
Nah Mariano is def gonna be a future cheater. He falls in love way too easily.
Mulans qualification was because she commited an act of heroisim

I think they were double-entendres.
@@maynot And in her earlier verse, she's using present tense "I CAN always hear him sorta muttering and mumbling" not could.

I really wanna know why they thought he never cared about the family. Yeah he may have seen terrible things about the future BUT THATS HIS GIFT. HE CANNOT CONTROL WHATEVER THE MIRACLE GIVES HIM.
Because they're dicks
With the "I want" princess song, I think it's less of a "I WANT" and more of a beg of finally feeling like she would be included in her family, finally gain the love and respect she's longed for ever since her gift ceremony failed. Everyone got it automatically through the miracle, except her. She isn't wanting something more in life, she wants what the rest of her family has, what she was stripped of thanks to the miracle itself.
Is no one gonna talk about how Mirabel brings back the magic?
I think Mirabel's miracle is Casita. I dunno just maybe
I feel like casita is a sort of way to express what mirabel's feeling so when she get back together with her family casita also get back (alive??) 13:09 THAT TRANSITION IS SO SMOOTH WTH
Is it just me or did anyone else get angry when no one thought to save Abuelo Pedro's portrait while casita was collapsing?
In all honesty it fits perfectly with what’s going on. The family is screaming for Mirabel to get away from the danger, even at the expense of the Candle. They value her life over the candles. In the same way they value their family’s lives over a portrait.

Yeah even with the flaws, Encanto is good definitely better than Raya.
I wonder if Dolores was fine with the magic vanishing because it meant she would know peace (normal hearing). She wouldn't proactively stop her family from saving the magic, and gave Mirabel clues because her cousin *wanted* to know. But if no one asked her, she would let things run their course.
Many people speculate that she was.
I actually like to think she's just autistic, and the times she covers her ears are just her sound hypersensitivity at work.
Yeah, also, she was in a fucking party at the time that happened, try hear anything when you are already compleatly drowning in noise, it's a wonder she did not just faint
I'd like to critique your apparent "critique":
They should make mini movies for each character showing where they went in encanto and what they did like a cool connection
I heard people say that isabela and camilo was actually trying to stop mirabel to save her
(Idk the source i just saw a comment abt it) and maybe about dolores not hearing is that there were too much celebration and abuela just wrnt to the candle and because of the noise in antonio's room dolores couldnt hear it?? And heard luisa's eye twitch when the party was over

Given she winces from the fireworks, it's probably more passive

watching a CHILD teasing his older cousin by making kissy faces, mocking etc. and thinking that there's something suggestive is actually weird
It's sadly accurate. :/ Some cousins joke like this
Yup
Clearly Camilo isnt a child or a kid he is 15 years old. Well if u mean Pepa's Child (i can understand that)

Luisa said that she felt weak when this whole thing happened, so probably Dolores also lost her gift, but she didn't notice it because of the party around her.
Delores’s “hm” makes me laugh already, but as you added the chair every damn time just killed me
WHEN YOU SAID THAT TANGLED WAS THE BEST PRINCESS MOVIE I SAID THIS:
this man knows what he is talking about and i respect and fully validate his opinion because tangled is a cinematic masterpiece and no other movie can top its visuals and songs and plot (encantos a close second tho)
i also loved the fact that they made the story revolve around the casita and not making the protagonist go somewhere far because ultimately the problem is inside the house and inside the family - the generational trauma and familial pressure.
the scene that the house is falling apart is very interesting, the people with gifts in the family tried to save the miracle while just fails because they are losing the gifts, but Mirabel is the only person that reached the candle. It was like, she doesn't need powers to do the things cause she naturally live without a gift, so shes used to do the things in the hard way, while the madrigals that have a gift dont rlly know how to deal with things without the powers.
"The easy way is not always the best way" or something like that u know?
There's a reason Batman sometimes refers to powers as "a crutch".
adding to that i feel like casita knew that mirabel was like the one "destined" to fix the underlying strife the family had within their collective relationships and wasn't actually letting the other family members help because casita wanted it to be mirabel
like implying that this is her power, strong empathy, mediation and mending relationships
this could certainly come from her differing perspective on life without a gift to help her like you said
It’s shown when Agustín (another without gifts) and Julieta try to reach Mirabel, the Casita intentionally pushes them out of the building- to protect them.
Love the comedic editing you do. The Monster House edit had me cackling!
You gotta be one of the most underrated review channels out there, I love your videos sm lmao
Same, thank you for bringing this up. That neatly wrapped-up end left a really sour taste for me.
@@josefinejepsen1748 yeah, no. When did Mirable apologize to Abuela? I don’t remember her apologizing at all during their reconciliation
22:55 I actually like that they got what they wanted
Gifted people shouldn't have to lose their gifts to be appreciated as people so if they lost it it would kind of damage the lesson of the film yknow
i personally love the fact that abuela alma is so fuckin scary in the start of the movie. makes you really able to feel what it's like to be a kid with a disapproving family member in a position of power over you- it IS scary and makes you worried how they'll view your every action, and you can GET that with the fear you feel when abuela interacts with mirabel, it really puts you directly in her shoes. then when you grow up, if you talk to them and understand them, instead of being scary they feel like... a person. a person who may have fucked up a lot, as people oft do, but a person. that shift in feeling with the character just felt really realistic to me.
I have a little of my own criticism for encanto such as: the characters need more detail, the ending was rushed, there is no clear way of knowing if abuela just repeated what happened, and overall I just want to see more of the characters because there was some… confusion.
Encanto is just begging to be a show
Actually, for the Abuela one, u actually do know that she won't repeat what happened. Otherwise, Luisa wouldn't be relaxing at the end of the movie, Pepa wouldn't be able to have a cloud there while dancing, and Isabella wouldn't be able to have a colorful dress.
title: "Encanto DOESN'T make sense"
Film Theory: *im gonna end this man whole career*
I would honestly have loved a 3 hour movie with a song for each character and I would have liked a scene where Bruno yells at abuela a ton like with Mirabel but other than that I agree with you on the 9/10.
I was just thinking this would be EXCELLENT as a six episode mini-series.
10:19 "no gift'" she literally stops time, shes a stand user, she has the world
I thought her Gift was making people break into song
IT'S THE MIRACLE THATS WHAT MIRABEL'S GIFT IS
Yeah. My immediate thought at that scene was "Superspeed".
The argument between Abuela and Mirabel definitely was one of the most intense arguments in Disney; it makes you feel like you're in the middle of the fight. The voice actors did such a good job, and the animation of the characters conveyed the mood perfectly
and they weren’t even in the sane country nevermind the same room. It’s insane!
20:00 Dude, watching a door fall has never gotten me this emotional.
Not to mention the fact that characters like Camilo have their own unique personalities which is why he is a fan favorite without actually doing too much which can take away from the story's themes surrounding the relationship between her and abuela as well as Bruno and abuela
But I do think that Bruno's arc was too abrupt and the fact that everyone accepted him just like that (especially Pepa) despite having sung a whole song about how they don't talk about him.
Can I point out that abuela whines about mirabell having no gift but she doesn't have a gift either
raya sucked tbh, it’s not appealing, the colour palette it’s pretty dark giving a sense of sadness, raya is a mulan wannabe, not interesting at all…encanto is super entertaining, aesthetically pleasing, the songs were a 10/10, storytelling and message very necessary and also it’s based on a different culture, what else can you ask for???
Good writing? -_-
@@zachtemoro2116 the writing is pretty great lol
Wild take. I thought Raya was a lot more engaging due to the change of setting and fully fleshed characters. Also, if anything, raya was a avatar the last airbender wanna be, not a Mulan wannabe.
I liked the aesthetics and color palette in Raya, but the dragon character and poor attempts of comedy kill it for me.
@@frostfeather6584
Raya and fully fleshed out characters should not belong in the same sentence
The moment the movie was done, I already forgot the names of the characters that weren't Raya or Namaari (and I remember Namaari for how infuriating her character was)
