    Do you think if I used buttercream as the base (white) the fondant hair would stick to it?

      It won't work as well no. Buttercream is too soft for this design. And the weight of the fondant hair will push into the buttercream as well

      I have seen this same design done with buttercream and modeling chocolate. It worked well.

    if i used a box cake from the store would it work just as well?

      I'm sure it will, as long as you don't carve it. Sometimes box cake from a store can be very crumbly

      It was a 9 egg coffee cake recipe, I.e. a 3 egg mixture per tin
