Moose Hunt: 6.5 PRC (Browning Max Long Range)

  • Our fall started out quick with a muley, but we beat the bush for almost 2 weeks looking for elk. Nearing the end of the rut and as the moose were just starting decided we might have better look with moose. Sometimes things happen really quick as within 20 minutes of calling on our first morning trying for moose we had one on the ground.

Hey Tom H. I had to read through Nd see what round he was shooting, it had been a bit si ce I saw the video. I know they shoot a 6.5 creed on a coyote video and I wanted to see if it was a 6.5 creed or a 6.5 prc they used in the moose hunt in this vid. Turns out it's the PRC with a 147 grain projectile. After researching the round and advertised velocity from Hornady for these rounds I would have to say that it has very similar energy to 270 win with a 140/150 gr. Bullet. Yes the diameter of the bullet is. 264 and is a bit smaller than a .30 cal or .277 cal. I would have to give the nod to this being an acceptable moose and elk round. Lots of moose and elk have fallen to smaller rounds, 257 weatherby, 25-06, 257 Robert's, 243 win, 6mm remington, 240 weatherby etc. There may be bigger cannons out there with more energy ( the big 300's ) but it ultimately comes down to shot placement as you know. Out of curiosity, what makes 6.5 calibers " shit rounds " ?

Great video. Your respect for the game we hunt is inspiring. The 6.5 prc gets a lot of bad press for not being big enough for elk/moose. When shot placement is good there is no mistake that 6.5 prc will do the job. If shot placement is not good then no matter what cal you are shooting it can fail.

I don’t need to ask about it’s ability on large game anymore. Great video! And, VERY pleased to see the ethics involved in your decision to take the second shot. You were lucky.....first shot appeared to be left of center of the chest and with a 6.5, again you're relying on luck. As for if he was going to spook and taking a shot at a turning moose, have you ever considered not taking the shot? If you can't ensure a clean shot/clean kill, then let the animal go. Now I have taken a frontal shot on bull moose however with a 300 WinMag. The animal dropped where he stood because I had the horsepower to back it up. With a 6.5, not so much.....

trey jackson hey Trey I upgraded from a 6.5 creedmoor for more downrange energy. This caliber with high bc bullets carries its energy better drops and drifts less. If you look at a ballistic app you’ll see what I mean. As for recoil with the muzzle brake there isn’t any. Less than a 243. Stacy is 105 lbs and can watch her shots and says it doesn’t hardly kick. I think this caliber will take right off. For me it seems to be the ultimate caliber and on paper and is proving this in the field.

I hope that you are 100% vegan, if not the hypocrisy here is comical. Rest assured if you go out and enjoy nature you’ll eventually witness cruelty in nature, but not from me. This was quick and ethical, not hunting for sport nor antlers. It’s a way of life that I respect you don’t understand. But don’t kid yourself the meat you find in any grocery store likely came from an animal that lived a very hard life and quite possibly died in a manner worse than this. Here a good example of what going out and enjoying nature might show you.

@@creativelife9879 You don't get it. We'd rather eat healthy meat that we harvest ourselves, not processed beef from a store. Our money that we pay for a license goes towards conservation, better habitat, etc. We support local businesses through our efforts. How much money do you give to the conservation of animals? You come on here with your own perspective, but have no idea what this really means nor do you help with the conservation, we do, the population management/conservation is directly related to us hunters. You do nothing but hide in the shadows and comment, but don't do anything to help.
