We take pest control seriously in NZ. Possums and rats are a huge risk to all our native bird life. I grew up on a cattle ranch and we (and other ranchers) did ear notching and branding. Ear notching might fit the bill. Wildlife researchers also tag small animals. A check with a Washington State University or Oregon State professor might get you the advice you need.

I have a wild Norway rat, like these wild ones. Had him since he was 2 weeks old, he was on deaths door, very lethargic. He is an absolute amazing pet. Very social and loving. I did have a pet rat as his brother (bought after I had him for a month) and he unfortunately passed away already though they were close in age. My wild one was vetted and both were neutered. Behavior is a bit different than the domestic one. Also oddly enough, he is cleaner, has designated areas for defecating, whereas the domestic one didn't. But still, knows who his 'mother' is and as I said loving. Did not watch the kill trap part obviously. Nope.

    3 comments:
    1) I'm excited to see more rat traps. Especially ones that use other rodents to take advantage of their social nature.
    2) That spring is way overpowered; be careful.
    3) The locking mechanism on your wooden crate needs a small redesign. The center of gravity could potentially dislodge the lock on it's own (as I'm sure you noticed).

I would be curious if you could set the traps in a gauntlet configuration where they are laid next to one another with an isolation pad to avoid false trips from the previous trap. Theoretically, they could be set up in all four directions with Judas in the center,

Honestly Shawn, please don't bugger about and try and be brave with live (wild) brown rats. A guy l know of was helping to shift a garden shed, they knew there could be rats underneath it because there were the tell tale holes. They moved the shed, big sticks at the ready and some ran out. This guy cornered a rat against a wall, it jumped up and literally "Went for the jugular", indeed it bit straight through it!. They tried their best to staunch the flow but despite their best efforts he was dead before they reached the hospital. Don't risk it mate, hell hath fury like a cornered rat!
