the title should say through not thorough.
To avoid having to "reset the rat" between tests, you could have made a maze were the rat starts from the largest hole box and has to go through incrementally smaller holes. Another thing you could have done instead of manually moving the rat between partitions is making a little canopy box to allow the rat to move between neighboring sections.

i trapped a rat in a bathroom last year. it was hell to catch it. it charged me multiple times. they are FEARLESS. i used a cardboard box to block its flying charge attack. 2-3 foot jump is insane! i tried putting down all kinds of snap traps but i watched it do triple salchows on them, setting them off without getting snapped as it ran the gauntlet. i had twenty rat-sized snap traps from diff manufacturers! i squirted it with some water (it didnt like being wet) and finally got it with a hockey stick. it avoided my big net. it didnt go in my live catch trap NOT ONCE. i didnt know fighting a rat would be this tough.

Omg I would be gray headed. They terrify me. Also had one trapped under my kitchen sink cabinets. I had sealed it's entry way, thinking it had already left prior. It had apparently hid and was there the whole time I had worked on the holes. Then it was trapped, so I opened the door just enough to throw a block of poison in with it. Figuring it had to eat something.. sometime. Barricaded the doors for 2 -3days until no more noise. Found it dead thank God. I could not have handled a fiasco like you had to endure.

That third rat just got progressively more chill as it learned how things went.
It got progressively more dehydrated... It was probably very weak by the end.
Ok, so we know the diameter of a round hole - but what about a "slot" like you did with the mice? I think slots/gaps are more common than round holes in buildings.
If you modify one of your side pieces you could slide the acrylic over instead of moving the rat each time.

Interesting, it looks like they don't like to chew on the plastic. I really thought they'd gnaw through that easily. It would be cool to retest this with the plastic roof but with wood front holes. I bet they can gnaw through the wood down to 1", maybe smaller.
They love the flavor of plastic used as electrical insulation and the synthetic rubber used to route vacuum around an engine.
Show them the owl decoy… they will fit through the smaller ones…

So they squeeze trough a hole between roughly 3,5 cm and 3,8 cm. Good to know!
If I would have Rats over here (which I have not, thnak God!) I would compare this to our German Rats.
But maybe someone else does it?
I have lived in this house for 52 years. I have never had rats here, although there has always been a compost heap with kitchen waste. Rats have been coming into my garden occasionally for a year now. I've watched them with wildlife cameras. Because there are cats, hedgehogs and other animals here, I only set live traps and snap traps in boxes. The rats don't come often and I caught 4 rats (2x 2 rats) last year.
The best way to manage a rat infestation is make sure they can't get in in the first place. Once you've got them, they are damn hard to get rid of. I had an infestation in my garage a couple years ago, and the holes they entered through were pretty small - like 1-1/4".
The rats you used in your tests were Norway rats, which are thicker and need larger holes. I was infested with black roof rats, which are thinner and can get through small holes. I which I could send you a couple live black roof rats for you to test with.
BTW, the rats in my garage chewed through cans, so I'm very surprised that one couldn't chew through the plexiglass.

A tunnel with increasingly smaller holes might be an idea.
Growing up, us kids would have to pass through the utility room to get outside to the porch. I kept hearing a scratching noise under my dresser at night. My dad would just scoff. Until mom discovered a huge rat was living under the dryer! Dad and my uncle went in there with waders and baseball bats. All hell broke loose, them screaming, the rat squealing, bats slamming everywhere. Every time I walked through there after that my toes would curl.
I expected they can chew through that plexiglass easier...
Now that poor rat has to explain to his wife where he's been all this time...
"Honey I just want a DRINK!"
That is good information and I thank you for passing it on, but if I ever find a rat in my house, I'll be too busy calling to reserve a rental truck and packing to search for the entry location.
They played you, there way to smart. They knew exactly what you were up to so they figured they will wait until either you left or the dark. I know this is obvious but it just shows how smart they are. great videos.

I think it would also be interesting to see how they can fit through rectangular gaps. They are more common than round holes. Like a garage door that isn't fully closed or a poorly fit basement door.
Rats are very smart!!! I actually trapped one that kept visiting my yard and eating the bird seeds. I was surprised how loud it was squealing. It was a live trap and uninjured. I gave to someone to take away. Fortunately I haven’t seen any more. A building was being torn down close to my home.

Mr. Woods. I am always entertained by your videos. But, with all due respect, you are out of your damn mind for doing this experiment with the rats. Thank God you weren't bitten.
My guess is that as long as they're in the light, with you being there acting the big scary predator, they are too frightened (or perhaps angry) to figure it out properly, but as soon as they're in their element they calm down some and manage to slip out.
I mean, they know you're blind in the dark, that's why that rat ran past you to escape instead of going the other way or attacking you.
Glad to see you wearing gloves for this test. It was enlightening to see how hard they tried in the dark, vs your control environment. Please protect yourself, as you said these creatures carry disease.

I've seen a skunk crawl into a old 3" pipe before.
I watched a small skunk fit through a chain link fence hole, they are all fur.
Would be interesting to see your mouse test again, with mice forced to escape as opposed to entering the box. Great video!

Could do a video for a slit, like the crack under a door. Do for mice too. Kind of scary how small of a hole/slit they can squeeze through!

Enjoyable vid Shaun. I did liked you were trying to experiment although I was getting a bit concered for the rat that couldn't get out for 2 days as it was without water. However I don't see the point of this experiment....the hole size needs to be small enough to trap them all, not just the oldies! I use 1/4" mesh live traps for that reason.

I feel like the rats could have gone through the smaller holes with ease but just because they knew you were there they didn't wanna escape, but the second it was dark they immediately ran.

Not exactly on topic, but: I was thinking about bucket traps meant to kill with water, and if there were a way to make it more humane by adding something that make it more humane--like a paralysis agent or something. Is this remotely feasible?
Most bucket traps aren’t designed to kill, they just trap the mice in the bucket. How you deal with them afterwards is up to you.
