I'm continually surprised by the beauty of Romania. Also, that would be the worst road ever to break down on in the middle of the night. Bears and Dracula :)
Did you noticed none of the bears put a step on the road? They know the road is human teritory, even if you get out from the car,as long as you are on asplalt, they would not aproach you. For them the humans are a nice specie who shares with them some strange food, very tastefull wich is not found in the forest,no other specie shares the food, but the same humans became agressive if the bear invades their territory.
@@sandvenexplorer A man came running to a village mechanic shop with a terrified face. The mechanic was sitting at the entrance with a dog next to him. The real reason is that there are more and more bears. After the 90s, bear hunting became prohibited. Another reason to mention is that a mother bear gives birth to an average of 3-4 cubs in one birth. They have adequate food in the forest, but with a population of over 6000 bears, there is not enough area. A bear needs at least 100 km of territory to stay, to live there. The authorities have done what they can, but the worst part is that deforestation is a huge problem. The main countries where wood and logs go are Austria and China. What do you think about this? These countries are so hypocritical, they protect their forests, instead they give a lot of money to mafia companies for deforestation in our country?! How does that sound to you?
Don't break down and have to hike to get help! I'm not banging on people for feeding them... However, if they really get hungry, especially pre-hibernation, they will consider humans a food source.. And, if you don't have food for them, you may be on the menu! I love watching them relatively speaking, out in Alaska and Montana in the US.. However, I always (without fail) have my bear bells and bear spray with me... JOKING! Glock 20 10mm w/Underwood xtreme penetrators across my chest.. And, if I'm way out.. A number of extra magazine.. They’re incredibly close there Chris, they make you humans look like a sushi conveyor belt on that road. I noticed those NL tourists feeding the bears, that’s got to be illegal? Beautiful animals though.
Many feeding them yes....bad idea, the only bear needing some food would be "threelegs"...not illegal. Both foreign tourists and Romanians do it I think..guess better to feed them than BEING the food, haha
@@sandvenexplorer I’m sure feeding them is encouraging them to wait by the roadside. But me day they might not be so patient. 🤷🏻♂️ Poor old Three Legs, I wonder if she got caught in a trap and had to leave her leg behind?
If they gave a big fine for feeding it would stop....say around 500 Euro...yes maybe that is what happened to Threelegs....but I doubt traps are a problem here....maybe a car ran her over, maybe a bear ripped her leg off when she was a cub and she survived cause of food from tourists...bears can take A LOT of pain and still go on I have read.
@@sandvenexplorer I’ve heard that too, bears, like cats, have superb endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. It’s interesting to ponder what happened to Three Legs, as you say, the abundance of food will have helped her to live.
@@sandvenexplorer, there`s actually a fine for feeding the bears, that goes between 600 euros and 1000 euros. However, it is hardly enforced because almost everybody feeds the bears. There`s also a draft for a new law which is supposed to triple the fines, but people will continue to do it, as it is very difficult to resist those cute puppy eyes they make when you pass by them. We love our bears in Romania, we call them "old man Martin", or "the old ones" or "the elders". Back in the days we had a special feasts for them, 3 times a year, once in summertime, once in the autumn and once in February. The most important day dedicated to the bears would be the 2nd of February, when they were supposed to predict how long the winter would last by coming out from torpor and seeing its own shadow or not (a sort of Groundhog Day). The bears are seen as wise, and they could give you either advice or some sort of healing from ailments, if they felt benevolent.
The first one i saw by the side of the road i thought ‘wow’. But the more you see, you realise why. So dangerous for the bears! Please dont feed them. Humans, cars and bears do not mix well. Amazing to see them so close up, but so many must be injured or killed on the roads. 😢
@@sandvenexplorer Decades ago before they made a law against it, some people here and there would feed black bears...I saw a recent video of a man walk up to a black bear, let the bear smell his hand, then started petting it on the head. It was in the wild and you can hear his motorcycle idling in the background. I guess he knew the bear from when it was a cub or at least adolescence. It must be fun to play with one the way a person plays with his pet dog.
Another reason that wasn't mentioned, I see no one is talking about this: bear behavior has changed over the last 30 years or so, because winters have become mild, with high temperatures, the climate has changed, temperatures are increasing every year by 1 degree. These bears no longer hibernate like in the old days when there were long, frosty winters with very low temperatures.
There are more than 8000 bears in Romania but deforestation by an Austrian company made their habitat of some of them disappear
"Progress"...sorry to learn that. Thanks for watching!

That road where bears travel in their holidays to see tourists.
Romania has the biggest bear population in Europe
Second-most if you count Russia 😊
@@curly_wyn Do you count bears in Asiatic part of Russia too?
It’s clear that food is being thrown from the cars and this is why the bears line the road. Dangerous situation. Bears anywhere would react the same.

Why are there so many bears there compared to other areas of a similar geographic size?
The forest is still quite pristine, although logging increasing....good environment still , and little hunting.
What are those bears like compared to our black bears and grizzly bears?
They are basically just regular brown bears/grizzly, with a very similar size and behavior to the interior brown bear/grizzly in North-America..
