Recently came across your channel and loving the content. Quick question on these monitors: they only have RCA unbalanced and 1/8" stereo unbalanced inputs. How do you recommend connecting them to an audio interface with 1/4" balanced outputs for monitors (e.g. Scarlett 2i2)? Are there any cons to using unbalanced mono TS cables out of the audio interface's balanced outputs to iLoud MM RCA inputs? Thanks!
@1:53 I guess you might have really meant "arm's-length width apart" (not shoulder-width.) Not only arm's length is more or less what you illustrate with your hand separation later, but also it would form an equilateral triangle with each speaker also at arm's length from the center of our head. So speakers on either side of a screen at more or less an arm's length from each other, and also each of them at an arm's length from our head.
I like how you mention they're flat. So they''re all round pretty good to make music on and then try on different speakers/headphones and it still sounds good? I had HS5's before which were great but just moved into an apartment and want something a little smaller. I also don't need them to be crazy good monitors just good enough to make my own music on and have fun. I also use DT990 Pro headphones which are good for keeping a flat-ish sound. Sometimes I pair with Sonarworks reference
Great review as usual. BRAVO and thanks! My question: are they also good for listening music in a medium room. I mean not as "nearfield" e.g. infront of the speakers. Thanks
Thinking of using replacing my adam AX3s with these. The highs are de-essed with the ribbon tweeters. Low end is not a issue since I have a tumbler 10 to pair them with. Hmmmm.

@Robert Martin I did, in June 2020. They still work flawlessly, though I have never bothered to test the Bluetooth function or reverse the audio cord (since I have an audio interface). I have to note that I take proper care of them (wipe dust regularly, knob on their back is always actually below 0, I only accidentally had a peak once but it seems it didn't affect them). As for the performance, I can definitely confirm that for the amount of money they're sold they may among the best (if not the best) performers in their price range (especially if your desk is small/lacking space in which case they are unbeatable). I've been using them for music production and casual use (music listening and general audio output) and sound-wise, they punch way above their weight. Sure, they're not completely neutral (the sound reproduction is fairly balanced and neutral honestly) but hey, is there a system that is? Even the much more expensive ones often fail at that. Low end gets cut off at like 55 Hz and it's pretty audible, but how IK managed to pump out 55Hz out of these juniors is beyond everyone. Besides, if I have to work on low end I usually do it through headphones. I'll add that I've used them with two different interfaces (dirt cheap Behringer UMC22 for over a year and SSL 2+ for a couple of months now). At first I couldn't say if there was discernible quality of audio reproduction, but once I played FLACs and produced using my go-to samples and VSTs I could defnitiely hear even more sound info and depth. Ok I've gone off the rails a bit 😂 All in all, if you can get them and are limited by available room in your workspace then by all means buy them. Or even if you aren't, still get them, it can't be a bad choice. Though it's important to say that iLouds are strictly near-field monitors for small rooms (up to a meter of working distance would be the max functional amount at sweet spot) and that's applied if you're doing technical sound work. If, on the other hand, you have enough space on your desk then there are alternatives in that price range (Adam T5V, Presonus Eris E5 etc.). Whatever your scenario might be, Micros are a great buy. All the best ✌🏻
HI there, thanks a lot for all your videos on these monitors. Could these be used for similar uses as the Mixcube? or even the MTM's? or am I better of going with the Mixcubes?
What kind of main monitors do you have now? The Mixcubes are VERY VERY useful, but are not full range monitors. So they wouldn't be used as mains. They're more like a microscope for your mixes.
I bought and received them yesterday. I'm blown away by the way they sound. Still working on the set up... what would you recommend: leave them on the desk or raise them from the desk to the ear level height? Next purchase will be a audio interface and was thinking about the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen Usb since i'm tight on a budget at the moment. By the way, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your opinion on the iLoud Micro Monitors.

@@ari.2406 i have them for over a year now and still own them. As with everything, it all depends on how you treat your speakers or monitors. They still work fine and at the moment i only use them for listening to music. Had to drop the music hobby due a job switch. People who reported they lasted a very short time didn't treat them right.
Well I just purchased a pair on Reverb.com after I saw this video. The new ones with the mic are cool but I’ll wait for when I have my own place to create a nice home studio. At the moment I’m super mobile
Speaking about 3 db down point, why you do not metion that below 55 Gertz the frequencies are cut off by DSP **very hardly**. Which is unnatural, and will not allow you to apply any EQ correction.
They are good untill they are not, which with Ik multimedia hardware is the norm, i went through 3 Iloud's and now my Micromonitors are failing due to I think the cheap link cable which has broken on my micromonitors and also two of my friends have had the same issue.. I've had zero luck with Tech support who originally told me they would send me a link cable to see if that was the issue, they asked for my address for posting, which i gave, and a few days later received a reply with a link to purchase the cable from their site.. I will never buy Ik Multimedia hardware again, cheap components and dire customer service.. Plenty other options out there with a better history of making solid hardware..
Hey this is great! Let me ask you, I am a guitar player who uses amp modeling software, but I am always listening to with my Headphones. I have an iPad 10th generation. If I plug the ipad into the Iloud, would they sound good?
It's the darn bluetooth. Luckily it deactivates once it finishes searching. Pretty much renders useless the bluetooth capabilities, as the ringing persists when in use.

Hey I know your comment was from 2 years ago, but wanted to know if you got the iloud micro monitors , cuz I too work out of a semi truck. If you did get them do they sound good ?
i have watched about 10000000 reviews for different affordable monitors on youtube. But what allot of reviewers seem to forget to mention is what and how are the speakers connected to? Makes a ton of difference. That’s a big reason why people say there’s no bass and others say theres too much.. A good preamplifier or audio interface is important.
Could you please tell me if these monitors have buzzing sound when being on but not being used like some speakers do? I plan to use them as my primary desktop speakers, so this is important, but I cannot find any hands-on information on this.
I'm listening in to a pair and they do have a hiss. The first 30 seconds or so when turning on while they scan bluetooth there is some extra hissing noise too. But when this ends, a slight amp humm with a hiss is certainly audible on this pair; sitting about 60 cm from them, with or without sources connected, different power sockets, flat eq settings. I turn their hardware volume down on them as possible which makes it kinda bearable, YRMV. Once audio is reproduced I don't notice it. Also be aware they sure do lets say 'feature' some pretty nasty port turbulence around the 50hz mark with very audible wind noise and chuffing at medium or higher levels and sustained notes (For anyone with a pair want to experience this, play 'These foolish Things' Jimmy Smith on Softly as a Summer Breeze record open.spotify.com/track/5yih6kBPAUIyKuN3M9doR2?si=9PIEgFxlTkGqz5J2ZWngeA ). Important to know if you're going to use this for certain genres with a lot of tones in that region. They sure are great sounding and impressive monitors, but they do have their quirks.
@@deegeeooh Thank you. It's very important to know it. I was looking for little monitors, with bluetooth, and without that annoying buzz sound, when not in use.
Nullll1111 the Avantones probably. Especially if you only have one set of monitors. The iLouds are great, don’t getme wrong. But the avantones are like specialized surgical tools. The iLouds are “real world” reference monitors. I use all three when mixing. The more the merrier!
They are two very different animals. I'm assuming you're talking about the Avantone mix cubes. So it depends on what you are after. If you are looking for detail, especially in the high end , then the ilouds. However if you're looking to really explore your midrange then the Avantones. I think the ilouds will give you a better representation of what folks are hearing on a range of bluetooth speakers.
I've owned them for a year as well, and _when they work_ they sound ok. I find that mine will simply cut out (they don't power down) when a loud note or something with hard attack (like percussive organ sound) then in about 30-60 seconds they come back on. It's infuriating. They're not being played too loud nor are they being overdriven. I'm not happy.
@@c3ajeff That should be fine. What interface are you using? You might want to check the output levels from that. Obviously the overload circuit is activating for a reason. Let's hope it's something you can fix by chasing the output gain staging. I use focusrite interfaces and the applications that come with them do have output controls that sometimes need to adjusted. Also if you're using some sort of monitor switching station, you should make sure that it is running the outputs at the proper levels +/-4db. I have the presonus Monitor station and I have to program each set of outputs for the monitors I use.
@@GaragebandandBeyond I'm using a M-Audio M-Track 8X4M for my interface - it has a master gain knob and yes this happens when it's turned up a little but not a _LOT_ . (I also have a pair of TC Electronics FX150's in parallel with the IK's, no monitor switching - yet) I understand gain staging principles and follow them _carefully_ . What it seems like to me is the overload is switching on prematurely or perhaps I am just expecting too much from the little monitors. Honestly I think it's reasonable to expect some satisfying volume levels from 3'-4' away... but anything above a very low-moderate volume level and they kick out. My other 'monitors' have no problem. Ironically, I _just_ looked it up and I bought them 11/30/2019...
@@c3ajeff Damn.... I was hoping the problem was there instead of inside the iLouds. They should be able to get to a decent volume before doing that. My guess is that the sensor is going bad. Are there any cons to using unbalanced mono TS cables out of the audio interface's balanced outputs to iLoud MM RCA inputs? Thanks!
I love mine! Amazing little beasts!
thanks for the review, I've been looking at these, will hopefully buy them soon
Awaiting my delivery tomorrow can’t wait to experience them
@1:53 I guess you might have really meant "arm's-length width apart" (not shoulder-width.) Not only arm's length is more or less what you illustrate with your hand separation later, but also it would form an equilateral triangle with each speaker also at arm's length from the center of our head. So speakers on either side of a screen at more or less an arm's length from each other, and also each of them at an arm's length from our head.
know it's an amazing engineering .I hope very soon I will buy this
.
Thanks for the recommendation! Just ordered a pair!!
You are going to LOVE them!!!
Thanks
Definitely yes! I have a pair that are connected to my record player now, they sound amazing!
Thank you, got a pair and I like them a lot.
Thinking of using replacing my adam AX3s with these. The highs are de-essed with the ribbon tweeters. Low end is not a issue since I have a tumbler 10 to pair them with. Hmmmm.
Can i connect this with a xlr cable to my interface?
That’s one of the greatest video on these I‘ve seen, thanks a lot! Are you still using them after all and what do you feel a couple of years later? Thanks!

Do you still recommend these in 2023, I really like the price range since I can just plug them into my laptop without having to go through an amp. Im no profesional but the fact that they are small and can connect via Bluetooth make it ideal for my desk as a music enthusiast.
Definitely yes! they are fantastic.
I Wonder how it fights with genelec 8010, which are actually as small, and money wise quite competitive with this on second hand market
I got mine about 4 months ago in white and love them
That’s awesome! The white ones look awesome!

I received mine for Christmas, I guess 2 1/2 years ago now, still use them every day, and have had no quality issues whatsoever.
@@trigliderider that's great to hear. Thank you a lot!
@@ari.2406 did you ever buy them?
Ok I've gone off the rails a bit 😂
All in all, if you can get them and are limited by available room in your workspace then by all means buy them.
00:53 you don´t need a ton a volume during mixing either. Check advice from CLA
@@GaragebandandBeyond Oh my bad, so my mains right now are Genelec 8030's. Ahh okay, I think I'll stick to getting the Mixcube in that case.
I would like you to do a review on the new AVANTONE CLS10's. I really think they look interesting. Would love to hear your thoughts.
I just bought a pair of the white ones they had them on $199 special on IK’s website, I hope they’re good
I bought and received them yesterday.
Yeah!! I'm glad you like them! I leave mine on the desk, it's really up to you and what you want.
If you have budget restrictions, get the original Focusrite 2i2 used on Ebay for $50. They are really good.
@@GaragebandandBeyond i'll play around some more to see or better, listen, what fits best for me. I certainly will have a look around for the original Focusrite 2i2. Thanks. :)

I am a lot motivated now for these. Looking for some small reliable speakers for my ipad n kronos keyboard
try putting them a meter apart and stand/sit about 6 feet away from them and you will hear a much louder bass and better sound over all
are you in a treated room? most likely this effect is caused by phase cancellation due to your room geometry
great review, thanks
Are they suitable for general use beside mixing, like watching TH-cam and Netflix?
YES They are incredible for that!
Well I just purchased a pair on Reverb.com after I saw this video. The new ones with the mic are cool but I’ll wait for when I have my own place to create a nice home studio. At the moment I’m super mobile
why is the background music SO LOUD dude?>
Speaking about 3 db down point, why you do not metion that below 55 Gertz the frequencies are cut off by DSP **very hardly**. Which is unnatural, and will not allow you to apply any EQ correction.
these or FRFR for guitar home playing?
Do these make sense for electonic piano or drum practice?

Hey this is great! Let me ask you, I am a guitar player who uses amp modeling software, but I am always listening to with my Headphones. I have an iPad 10th generation. If I plug the ipad into the Iloud, would they sound good?
Yes, absolutely! They work great for that.
My give off a 1600Hz ring for about 24 seconds when I first turn them on...any idea why?

It's the darn bluetooth. Luckily it deactivates once it finishes searching. Pretty much renders useless the bluetooth capabilities, as the ringing persists when in use.

@@ari.2406 I do still have and use them and they work just fine. However I feel like I don't use them as much as maybe a sound engineer would or a music producer. I use mine like regular speakers for just listening to music and playing games. I bought these with the intention of using them for music but I never got around to it. As far as speakers go though they work and sound great and the small footprint is what sold me.
@@Asuma492 thank you for replying! Even though you may not use them for music and sound engineering, I guess that daily gaming and music listening sessions surely take up some hours, or am I wrong? Nevertheless, thank you once again! :)
@@ari.2406 Yeah for sure, I'm definitely a casual gamer at this point since I don't have the time for it. I do listen to a lot of music at very loud volume and the speakers do well. @@Asuma492 that's good to hear. I'm looking for a good subwoofer to go with my ilouds. What do you recommend?

i have watched about 10000000 reviews for different affordable monitors on youtube. But what allot of reviewers seem to forget to mention is what and how are the speakers connected to? Makes a ton of difference. That’s a big reason why people say there’s no bass and others say theres too much.. A good preamplifier or audio interface is important.
These are self powered and can connect with 1/4 inch cables or RCA.
All the info can be found on the website of the company.
@@GaragebandandBeyondyes of course but the source matters
"its not going to break your ribs"
I mean, if I'm going to buy a speaker, I don't want it to break anything lmao

Thanks for the review! I got them a few days ago. There is a light hiss and a irregular higher frequency buzzing. Do you get that too?

If you were to choose your next monitors after the big ones what would it be - iLouds or Avantones?
Nullll1111 the Avantones probably. Especially if you only have one set of monitors. The iLouds are great, don’t getme wrong. But the avantones are like specialized surgical tools.
The iLouds are “real world” reference monitors. I use all three when mixing. The more the merrier!
I thought so too. Thanks for the answer!
Nullll1111 you’re very welcome!
Where do you have the volume knobs set to?
@@GaragebandandBeyond The volume knob is set to 80% (I've tried various settings ... no joy) I know not to dime a monitor amp.
You might want to investigate getting them repaired. If you write to IK, let them know that you have discussed this with me. It MIGHT help, no promises.
