"Never question what you're drawn to. Just shoot it." is still the best advice for street photography that I've ever heard. Both coming from you and The Photographic Eye. Even if other people don't end up liking it, the point is that it made _you_ think, and it got you into the process, and it got you shooting. That's what matters the most.
I enjoy watching the few seconds before each shutter click -- it's fun to see the visual shift that sparks you to capture the picture (such as the arm moving into the sun at the 5:38 mark). I'd appreciate a video where you pull a bunch of moments like this and talk about what was catching your eye. Cool video. Always fun to see budget gear doing its thing.
One of my favorite cameras of all time was one of the GX1's predecessors, the GF1. It had amazing face detection AF for the time. I took to shooting it at waist-level with the 20mm on the streets of Paris because I could trust it to grab faces that were in frame. It looked like a tourist camera, too so it wouldn't freak out Parisians. What a great package.
James, these are easily some of the best photographs youve ever shared with us, IMO. This was a wonderful set and I would definitely purchase a nice book of these if you were to publish one.
Your GX1 video last year actually got me to buy one/get into photography. After a lot of swapping around I now use a G9 and Ricoh GR (2013), thank you for sparking my interest! Best hobby I've ever had.
I’ve had a G9 for 4 years (paired with an Oly 12-40 2.8) and I adore it. Was thinking about a Ricoh or similar but already own the Lumix 20mm. I just can’t justify the mad prices on these smaller cameras lately for what’s going to be a one-a-month camera (if that)
@@MarcosCodas yeah MPB is asking $600-$700 for a gr i which is pretty expensive, I got mine for $410 on MPB because there was dust on the sensor that I cleaned, worth every penny it goes with me everywhere!
@@PlzReviveMeBro ever since I got my iPhone 11 Pro I haven’t been able to financially justify the purchase of a point-and-shoot type camera. I use the G9 for work, but for everything else, the addition of the telephoto lens on the 11 Pro and the color science have really won me over. They’re the reason I switched from Android and the only reason I’m still using an iPhone.
The one thing I noticed is that you're street walk photography is really good now. I remembered when you went out with the G9 a while back now, you were not as confident about street photos. You're an awesome photographer mate. I use my GX85 as my black and white cam these days. Although my Z6 ii is my primary now.
I don't normally like presets, but I have to say that yours suit the 'holiday in Italy' vibe 100% perfectly! I liked the phone shots from last week, but I think I would use the £52 camera and the other £1300 would pay for a holiday in Italy rather than waste it on an iPhone.
"Waste" on an iPhone. I totally understand, but... Oh man. I shot with everything over the years. 300D, 1D, 1Ds, 1Ds2, 5D, 5D2, 7D, 5D3, D700, D800, D610, A7s, XPro1, XT1, SL, M9, M240, GH3, GH4, GH5 M2... Just got the iPhone 14 Pro. That 48MP sensor makes all the difference. I don't believe how good it is. That 2x crop of that sensor... Surprisingly good. The exposure is always spot on. I think I'll just use an ILC for telephoto stuff on trips.
Nice. Thanks for sharing. I like these old cameras that can be slipped in the pocket when out and about. Plus one for MPB too. I have bought three things from them now and have been very pleased with the service.
When I was in Amalfi in 2002, on my honeymoon, all I brought was a Canon ELPH APS film camera, and I got some lovely shots. When I returned for my first anniversary in 2003, I brought only a Sony DSC-U30 2.1 MP fixed prime lens digital camera, and again got some gorgeous shots. You do not need an expensive camera to take memorable photos. The DSC-U30 is one of my favorite cameras of all time. It was the size of a large pack of gum, had a 33mm f/2.8 equivalent lens, a 1/2.7" sensor, and could shoot an entire week (sans flash) on two NiMH AAA batteries. It even had a little convex mirror on the front sliding cover to help you frame arm's length selfies. Imagine if Sony or anyone, really, made a modern equivalent!
I picked up a Canon 6D from MPB last year. It was a fantastic buy. One of the smallest and lightest full frame DLSRs. Pick up a used Canon 40mm 2.8 lens as well and you are good to go for a fraction of the cost of a new full frame mirrorless Canon kit. You'd have enough change to get to Positano and back a few times! It has a fantastic quality sensor that renders images in a more "film-like" way than most cameras, helped by the relatviely large pixels on the 20MP sensor. This may sound pretentious, and it probably is, but I think it's a great camera that was always overshadowed by the 5 series Canons.
James, I absolutely love your channel! It is one of the few I can binge for hours. Many channels are really good but too many are absolutely crammed with facts and tips but without personality. Your self proclaimed 'boring' videos do end up working because of a little waffling (as you say). Keep it up! I do like the new budget, gem, bargain, fun.... cheap (or whatever) 'series'. Sure, all the new fancy Z8, Z9 top of the line cameras packed with cool fancy features are alluring but seriously, what n00b or hobbyist working a normal day job can justify a $6000 - $8000 setup!? Not me but some can. Anyway, I'm waffling now so again. Keep it up! Thank you.
James, this will probably be incredibly annoying, but these are once again some of my favourite images of yours. I swear a tiny camera has some magic sauce. I think in some way the physical agility must contribute to creative flow and awareness or something, because I swear you always nail it having a bit of a walk about with a pocket camera.
So good! I bought the GX1 about two months ago, I wanted to start my photography journey with something cheap, and I love it. Just bought a Sony a7iii for the better low light performance, but I will absolutely be using the GX1 still. Love the content mate, so much fun to watch!!
Please could you do another video with this camera, I’ve managed to grab one myself, and would like to see some more content on it. The photos turned out great, they’ve got that film look to them, which I’m after, as I’m sick of paying ridiculous prices for film now days
i've bought the exact same camera and lense after watching your first video with the gx1 and im so glad i did. As my first camera it is perfect and it is so much fun to shoot with it. Happy to see you still using it and the pictures of the trip are outstanding!!!
Love this. It's so easy to get caught up in the thinking that having the latest and greatest gear will take the best images. This is inspiring - and reassuring :D
Used MPB for the 1st time 3 weeks ago buying and a used Fuji x-s10. Packaged arrived quickly and camera was as described. I like that you see photos of the actual product before purchasing it. Price was a lot better than KEH but I have bought numerous camera equipment from them also with no issues. Photos from Italy were fantastic. My great grandfather died in WWI fighting for Britain. Grandmother was born in Burnley. Mom was born in Canada before moving to the States. Always enjoy your videos!
It's so easy to get caught up in all the hype over the latest camera gear; I was getting weary with the constant stream. Your video brings it home to "have fun" with whatever you have or can afford. I love my Lumix GX80 with 14mm or 20mm primes for wandering around. Enjoyable video. 👏👏
There's a guy in my town who'll replace the cell from your battery with a new, generic one, with same voltage. Not the most elegant solution, but for really old stuff, works like a charm. I'm 100% sure you'll be able to find someone like that in UK.
I've got drawers like that. Full of dozens of things you could never throw away making it almost impossible to find anything. Nice vlog as always James.
amazing stuff, loving the tones and atmosphere and vibrance in these. your photography looks like an amalgamation of film and digital. digital made organic, like "how it felt in that moment"... it's really really beautiful. also this is such a lovely place that i had never heard of until last week. it looks very much like the south of France so I was quite surprised to find out this is actually south of Napoli.
Some of the best 'road' photos I've ever done were done with one. After it went belly up I got another. I got cranky about the lack of an EVF and sold it. I might have to find another because it was insanely fun with that lens. You're so right about the denoising. I got 'just fine' 11 x 17 prints too.
Bank holiday because you put a hat on a man - love it!!! Hahahaha. That's about how much many I know in Australia cared about it too. Not a lot. Great little explore and wander with that little camera. Makes me want to enjoy my little compacts in a bit of a city/town wander.
Brings back memories of my GX1, and it's weird 'double shutter' sound, seemingly a slight shooting delay too. I found it quite annoying, and by comparison, preferred my GF1, unfortunately sold to get the 'better' GX1. The 20mm lens is a gem though...
I love the one with the blue roof and the red and white parasols. And the guy lifting his arm. That's what I call photography, catching the magic of the moment. I got a Lumix G6 (used from MPB, 150 €) and can relate, these cameras are good enough for great shots and small enough to carry with you often, without attracting too much attention. The only thing I sometimes miss is a faster and more reliable face/eye detection, but I'm not going to spend 2,500 € on that. Oh and btw, I always carry two spare batteries with me ;)
Love the shots of the quirky (to me) vehicles, as well as the ones with locals doing their daily jobs... and... and all the other shots too! Nice to see the GX1 out again. Love it's shutter sound. I owned its rival, the Olympus E-P1 back when it was new - tried one recently and didn't really like it, funnily enough. I do like my old (2006) Pentax K10d though! Cost about the same as your GX1...
A few months back, I picked up an old Olympus E-PL2 in great condition, shutter count just under 3K, for US$30. I use it with my vintage primes (28mm f2.8, 50mm f2, 58mm f2 and 135mm f2.8) and it's a blast. The only thing i'm not so keen on is the lack of a viewfinder, in the really sunny Philippine weather, but a cheap folding sunshade for the screen helps out with that. A cheap used Olympus VF1 to use on it would really make my day!
Thank you for this interesting, well made video. The photos look great. I've just waded into the compact camera waters for the first time, and find they're a blast to use and produce results with which I'm very happy.
"We're putting a hat full of diamonds, on a man." That made my day, another quality video James. You have inspired me with your camera switching, (much to the annoyance of my missus), to do some camera experimenting of my own. I now have a pair of Olympus cameras, EM1 Mark iii and EM 5 Mark ii, and I love the pair of them, not brand new but built to shoot, photographs of course.
I use Panasonic's great EVF with my GX1 (DMW-LVF2). It's tiltable which I use often in waist-level mode. Also beware of shutter shake on the 14-42 pancake zoom between 1/60s - 1/200s on these bodies. The original 14-45mm kit lens from the G1 is alot better and sharper too.
Hi James, really love the video and I really like the mood you put in the photos that you take. But be carefull because in Italy privacy regulamentation are kinda strict, for example you can't publish the photos with people, private property, licence plate and everything that could contain private life of people (including jobs and habits) without a written or recorded permit from the subject. Without this permit you can incur in a felony for privacy infringement.
I used to have one of these, but I just didn't love it that much, eventually sold it. Years later I picked up a GX85 and it solves most of the problems I had with this one, it has a viewfinder, it has stabilisation on the sensor, and it can shoot at super fast shutter speeds so you don't necessarily need an ND filter, at least not for photos, the video's better, there's a little less noise, its a little sharper, it has faster AF and a higher hit rate, its actually great, but they still sell for a lot more than 50 pounds, but it is everything I had wanted at the time I originally bought this GX1. I just wish it had the 20mp sensor, but I like the look of the pictures so I suppose it barely matters. I do wish they had been quicker about getting the 20mp sensor into more cameras, mft used to be all 12mp, then they were pretty quick to make them all 16mp, but when the 20mp sensor came along, they got stingy about it and continued to release multiple more generations of 16mp cameras. Back when I originally had the GX1, I thought they'd have gotten to 24mp by now and stopped there, and I still wish I lived in that timeline.
Ive been thinking about this set up for a while. Im pretty much sold. I primarily use a Nikon z6ii and 35mm lens, but this setup is way way more compact, and i wonder if for more travel , city etc i will notice a huge difference.
I love my GX1. As you say, it's tactile and image quality is good enough. I love the accessory viewfinder as well. Not up to modern standards in all aspects, but a pretty large and good view. I would never have bought the viewfinder myself, but it came with the (used) camera. It makes it a different camera, ergonomics wise. I always wanted to make a grip for it, maybe I should do it now.
In this age, newer photographers subconsciously tend to be repetitive and monotonous. It's nice to see something different and actually educational from an experienced photographer, of course. Keep creating and teaching us who're trying to find ourselves through mastering the craft. Keep uploading more good content. Best wishes, sir.
Nice, but I'm done trying to live without a viewfinder. Lately I've been reaching for a little Pentax K-S1 with the Pentax-F 28mm f/2.8 lens. (That's 42mm equivalent!) I have a lot of history with Pentax, so it's all familiar territory for me, and that pentaprism viewfinder is beautiful on bright, sunny days.
Ahh man i was trying to buy this camera for the last two weeks but i keep losing bids. But i ended up getting the gx7 for the same price so im buzzing. Thanks to your video! Im super excited to start this photography journey
Thanks James for another great video! I really like your photo's and editing style. You make it look so easy but off course i have to keep in mind you have many years of experience. You achieve great results with the GX1 of any camera i suppose! :) keep up the good work.
Why don't you try Sony's Xperia 1 James? It's got a shutter button, textured back and sides to add grip, Alpha camera inspired control on the app, and they are even lockable so you can handle the phone like any camera without worrying about accidentaly changing any settings, have detachable SD card tray without the need of any tool, also the Raw files are lighter than iphone's Raw. The latest mkV model have the latest Dual layer sensor from sony that enables it to be used in ni time pretty well.
I cant believe it, i bought this camera the day after i saw your last video since i wanted to shoot more and thought a pocket camera like this would be ideal for that. It arrived yesterday, and I see this on my recommended 😂
Was in Italy recently with a current gen Fujifilm and a LUMIX GM1 and ended up liking a lot of the LUMIX shots. I really enjoyed pairing it with the 85mm equiv f/1.7 stabilized lumix lens. Still quite small. I have the pancake you use here (1st gen one so maybe even older, got it new over a decade ago) but I do find at normal focal lengths I really prefer the Fuji. But being able to carry the GM1 with a longer lens as a second body because it's so compact was really cool.
You have a cold? Take something with zinc. Nice camera! I do like oldie-goodies. My favorite film camera? Olympus XA. (Sorry, partial to OM) digital? Pen f. It’s old (bought used). Filters, good idea. 😊
My first camera was a Panasonic GF1. I still have it in a box somewhere, just need to see if it still charges up:) The 20mm was one of my favourites as well!
Thats the lens that taught me a lens can be great for stills but bad for video. Noisy slow auto focus and the aperture seems "jumpy". But for stills, it's crisp and creamy and can see in the dark
This type of videos make me realize that I don’t need to buy the newest just go out and shoot. I’m still using my Panasonic LUMIX G85 with a Leica 25 mm F1.4 and I love the results
I use for street-photography my Lumix GF5 for 50 € plus a pancake-zoom-lens or my bulky sigma 1.4 lenses. Always big fun and good results. I like it more than the iPhone 14 Pro. And with a 14-140 mm lens, it is the perfect travel camera.

A cheap used Olympus VF1 to use on it would really make my day!
Thank you for this interesting, well made video. The photos look great. I've just waded into the compact camera waters for the first time, and find they're a blast to use and produce results with which I'm very happy.
The original Olympus OM-D EM10 holds up pretty well for photography slightly better than the GX80/G80. A good travel/street camera
Beautiful photos as always! Makes me want to go back there just by looking at them
That tiny blue car is a good shot!
The plank shot was breathtaking and I’m so glad you waited for it
Really enjoy these fun videos, it’s still great to see the thought you put into composition.
I use Panasonic's great EVF with my GX1 (DMW-LVF2). It's tiltable which I use often in waist-level mode.
Also beware of shutter shake on the 14-42 pancake zoom between 1/60s - 1/200s on these bodies.
The original 14-45mm kit lens from the G1 is alot better and sharper too.
your work is simply amazing and inspirational!!
I was in Sorrento in March. Amazing little villages and great for photograpy if you remember to take your camera. :(
I used to have one of these, but I just didn't love it that much, eventually sold it.
So jealous of the weather! It has mainly been miserable here in the Netherlands, so I'm longing for summer! It's beautiful there in Italy!
Ive been thinking about this set up for a while. Im pretty much sold. I primarily use a Nikon z6ii and 35mm lens, but this setup is way way more compact, and i wonder if for more travel , city etc i will notice a huge difference.
I was not ready for the "putting a hat full of diamonds on a man" bit 🤣
Great shots! I think focus beeps are quite vintage too😂 perfect! Would love to see jpgs for reference too! That AInoise tool take ages 😅
I love the red and white umbrella photo. I thought I saw Waldo.
5:01 when you take shots like this do you say anything to the person? Tip them if an artist?
Love the pictures colours!!!
The GX1 also takes better photos than any smartphone today.
"...we're putting a hat full of diamonds on a man..."
James, your sense of humor always makes me laugh!
Thanks for a great video!
Fantastic stuff! Definitely in a groove, having a good time; you could shoot anything. Great to see, inspiring to watch, great lens!
Nice find. I have to check the serial number because I just sold mine to MPB :)
Favorite was the blue vw bug in front of the sea. Heading to this area soon. Best video to get an idea of what it’s like
I'm all about following this gem hunt. Great video, James!
Wow. gx1. My bday gift my dad bought me when I was a kid. I still keep it to these days tho I bought myself a g80 couples of yrs back then
Just nabbed an X100T for $325 locally. Cheap enough to carry every day but still produces a great image
Those roads are frightening. And beautiful.
I just love your videos. Brilliant!
This tactility thing just won't leave me alone! It's making me want to buy a camera.
I love the contrast and colors on @5:27 . Wonderful shot. Did you have to tweak a lot afterwards in post?
My first camera was a Panasonic GF1. I still have it in a box somewhere, just need to see if it still charges up:) The 20mm was one of my favourites as well!
Love the photos around Amalfi
I knew I stil need my pocket Olympus... Cheers, loving these videos, James
As Italian from the southern I have to say that you have a great eye to emphasize some great details I could never do despite I see them everyday👍🏻
diamo troppo per scontate le bellezze che ci circondano
roof that gear does not matter! RESPECT
Insane it's been a year since that video in Tuscany, that set was beautiful!!!
Thats the lens that taught me a lens can be great for stills but bad for video. Noisy slow auto focus and the aperture seems "jumpy". But for stills, it's crisp and creamy and can see in the dark
Best description of the coronation ever 😂
Hat full of diamonds on a man 😂😂
This type of videos make me realize that I don’t need to buy the newest just go out and shoot.
