The hundreds of millions poured into Formula One by BMW in the 2000's resulted in no driver or constructor wins, but from it came a foundry built for light-alloy castings with maximum precision, an in-house electronics department containing a prototype production facility, and a team of engineers at their disposal. This would lay the groundwork for a new project to bring F1 engineering into a road car and thus the S85 was born!

Thats ok, I'll take quality over quantity.
everyone calls them unreliable, but more people need to understand this is a supercar basically with supercar maintenance, you take care of it, it takes care of you :)
In 2025 400hp it’s pretty slow car
@@dailypovs7800 500* and what do you drive that makes 500 slow?
My tuned S58 is far more reliable. So much fun taking the engine bay apart to replace spark plugs every 10-12kmi
@@Derkenblosh2that’s good you don’t drive it daily cause that’d be idiotic to drive a sports car daily putting hundreds of miles, if not, thousands of miles into it
Daily'd an E92 for 5 years. no oil leaks and eventually built up to full bolt on. They are reliable if you do your (expensive) maintenance and mind your fluid levels, they are solid.

But man, these cars were legendary
Back in 2000s when BMW and Audis were producing insane cars as well as Porsche
Only morons ruined them to the point of needing rod bearings from new.
The fact that they said change every 15k miles is wild. I remember working at O’reilly back in the day, and customers were buying the Castro 10w-60 by the bulk because these engines kept on burning oil
@@MrPabs23 It's a racing engine. They burn oil.
@@Edison73100 oh ok
@@Edison73100 Only at (generic parts store) for a few years a while back, but I was made to understand that many if not all BMW's burn oil by design.
The E60 M5 is legit my dream car. Interlagos Blue, White leather interior, and a 6 speed manual.
One drawback with the manual tho. It has terrible gearing from what I heard
Mine is lagos and silverstone leather. I love it so much
For those who think an oil change and wiper blade replacement are vehicle maintenance...this isn't the machine for you. For the people who know better, this M's for you.
Thank you, mines are still going strong. You have to do the schedule maintenance. When it says do it, you cannot abuse these engines, they aren't toyotas
Rod bearings is the regular maintenance
@@matthewliek7935 regular? How many miles do you put on yours? You do it once every 100000km/ 60000 miles!
That‘s usually once or twice over its lifetime…
Although I also know cars with well over 200000km. It‘s three times then and totally affordable if scheduled with the regular oil change.
Show me the Lexus LFA (which is an incredible engine - no doubt) that was driven >120k miles and tell me the maintenance cost. Then we can talk about reliability/ maintenance cost again!
@@striezlmuc Nah he is just talking about how these engines are notorious for spinning bearings. You can replace them with aftermarket ones and they will likely never need replacing again in the car's lifetime, but the stock ones are known to be kinda crap
The biggest downfall of the s85 are the people who don't understand how to maintain them. It is an engineering masterpiece that will not tolerate deferred maintenance. You cannot in good faith complain that the engine is too expensive to maintain when it is a bespoke unit. This is one of the greatest road engines ever produced.
A v10 can be normal to maintain like the audi r8 v10
@@LoopBooost The Audi v10 is way more run of the mill engine shared across many models that was spawned from the 2.5 5cyl. Not saying that it isn't a good engine too but it just isn't as special as the S85.
If you own this car you know how special it is ..just pulls and pulls to infinity nothing like it ! ..only car guys who are into maintenence should also own these . They need to be preserved and those who do will be greatly rewarded
Your videos just make me love every car/engine/platform. Don't ever slow down bro you're killing it❤

And learn how to not throw your wrench at the wall when your S85 does an S85
it changes oil automatically, all you have to do is fill up.

damn, I was so immersed that I thought this was just an F1 special till the halfway point and the story came back to the sedan. Great story telling
It's amazing to think that the V10 era of F1 was Ferrari's golden period yet they never made a V10 for the street. This is why, as an owner of a Ferrari, I also own an E60 M5.
Another great video. Keep up the good work!
And the mad men in Italy would make that v10 scream proper, its a shame they never brought it onto their road cars forsure
coolest, best sounding, most technologically advanced, and most unreliable v10 ever made
It is what it is. 😂
not best sounding
You forgot LFA and best sounding and reliable 😂
@dailypovs7800
Even if you account for the amount of maintenance the S85 needs
It's not going to get close to the price of a LFA
Because the LFA was made to be a Halo Car for a Whole brand (same goes for the Audi R8, Porsche CGT, etc..) but The E60 & E63 were different things
Not to mention the LFA came years later.
After all, for the average enthusiast the E60/E63 is the better choice
Plus this will be the only time in history that a manufacturer will offer a FORMULA 1 DERIVED V10 in A SEDAN.
Even if it's unreliable, it's still a crazy thing to have
@@othmanabdallah3135 There wasnt an e63 M5? BMW codenames go 0 for sedan, 1 for touring, 2 for coupe, and 3 for convertible. Do you mean the M6? I think only the facelift with the v8 got that.

6:52 I know exactly what you mean, but to clarify they were competitive and did get wins, notably in '03. Just no driver's or constructor's championships. 'A generational tear' is right! No one was touching Michael and Ferrari at that time. 😤
Other than that, love the quality of your work and the effort you put in! Glad to see a brotha getting his recognition out here. 🤙🏾
Finished a weeklong work , at home having dinner and watching this, can't get any better evening for me. Thanks for making it, it really was time for it so sad when these beauties were made new, I wasn't in financial situation to get one.
Thanks 337 SPEED for making such a thing !
One of the best intro's I've heard, that V10 getting louder and louder, could've listened to that for another 15 minutes!
this is the best format to learn about care history. in a short format. i love watching these as i learn things about other cars i didnt know about or knew the history.
I don‘t get those negative comments of the wannabe experts hearing complaints from people that give a sh.. on maintenance and abuse those engines until they break. It‘s not an inline six. Those cars are simply too cheap to buy and if you think you can neglect maintenance, you have to pay the price…
I don‘t get why everyone is obsessed with the rod bearings or SMG, too. Regarding rod bearings: Just get them changed once with an oil change/ max twice over it‘s lifetime!
Compared to other 500+ hp naturally aspirated engines, it‘s still a bargain and everyone driving an engineering marvel like the S85 should be able to afford it.
Drive it warm, do your maintenance and it‘s one of the most reliable engines out there! Have 165k km put on mine without any other issues than standard maintenance and a clutch changed at 142k km…
Speaking of the SMG: Don‘t complain if you don‘t understand it‘s a manual. It‘s not an automatic and sure terrible if you don‘t know how to drive it. Once you understand the tech behind, it perfectly suits the deive train! It‘s buttery smooth if you like and if you deive it hard from time, to time, there’s nothing else that compares to a SMG. Everyone can drive an automatic or DCT, but the SMG is so much more involving.
Every engine has it‘s flaws! People that complain about the S85 but drive an N62 complain about valve stem seals and water pipes… Guess you get it 🙄
There's so many aftermarket rod bearings, most of them are resized gape and one time job. You don't even need to remove the engine to drop the pan.
@@striezlmuc finally someone who knows what they are talking about. Can’t wait to fire up mine in March.
Man I loooove this channel. Keep it up legend

Man.... I REALLY appreciate you doing this video! I've always appreciated the S85 engineering and performance, but plauged by its issues. Great video and editing! 👍👏
Keep the good stuff rolling. I want to see the S70 next.
My dad owns an STI which he loves but he forever talks about this particular bmw M5 with the V10, literally his dream car, although he isn't knowledgeable about the in depth of the car, i can understand why he loves it. Another amazing video 337 , you're excellent at this, keep it up!
Most people who criticize these cars have never owned one. There is no such thing as a cheap to maintain European high performance car that can run 200mph. Ive had mine for ten years. Interlagos/Silverstone/SMG. I’ve performed preventative maintenance, changed oil every 3,000 miles and sent off samples for analysis twice a year. I made it to 150k miles on the original drivetrain before tearing it down for a full rebuild. It put down 468 on the dyno before the rebuild and feels even stronger now at 161k. I’ve owned many fast cars and have a couple others in my stable, but there is nothing like the E60 S85 driving experience of sound and an 8k redline. They’re becoming unicorns and are rare even at BMW meets. I keep it because it’s the last naturally aspirated BMW M5 that will ever be made.
Please keep making amazing video art like this. It will stand the test of time when we are no longer able to enjoy these cars, we can come back here and be reminded of them!
I have a e60 m5 with 6 speed box and she has 140k miles on the clock. If you maintain properly, they are pretty reliable.
Those videos of that guy toying with the cops in his S80 (in whatever EU country) is literally a real-life Need For Speed that many know this platform by.
Wait a Volvo? Those V8 Volvos are under appreciated and under valued. They can make 400hp and still be reliable. Dont know much about them, except Yamaha made the V8. Was used in the Noble M600 if I'm correct. Same engine was bored up to 5.0L for super gt racing.
SPEED, I'm an E39 fanboy since day 0. When the E60 came out, I was disappointed. The body design was not subtle, the engine was "straight out of a racecar" and there was no manual transmission available upon initial release. But as time goes by, the E60 has earned my respect in besting the E39 in every driving dynamic way. What's more important, your production here has seriously made me consider a ten-cylinder Bavarian four-door in my life. Thank you for showing me yet another awesome perspective of this engineering tour-de-force.
Ive seen well cared examples of S54 and S85s, some above 300000 km with no bearing issue (tracked from time to time). All had same thing done, oil change at 3-5000km. Yes it costs but a lot cheaper than engine swap lol
You did the E6X Proud good sir. Job well done.
I just spent half the video explaining to my wife how awesome your content is, how nerd it is, how competent you are and how your voice is just perfect.
Peace friend xx
Love the videos, more people gotta realize the newest thing isn’t always the best. In the world of performance engines that were over built from the factory & are still used years later by enthusiasts is a testament to that
Prices are going up as we speak
Where do you see that ?
Yes as more BMW V10s and SMG gearboxes are being destroyed
@@dyaanahmad5079 That doesnt mean that more people want to buy the car. As technology progress, 500HP becomes less and less appealing than before
Your videos are so cool. It’s sweet going super in depth on the technical stuff and putting it all into a story
This shit should be an actual weekly televised series. My favorite car channel and also weirdly enough the one that drops the least amount of videos lol. It’s all good tho keep @ it 💪🏾
Knew about the potential problems/cost before I leased mine for 3 years. That car was amazing. The harder you pushed it the more it responded. Was my favorite car. Drove it a lot with the windows down for the beautiful music it made.
loving how it incorporates asset to corsa footage for each episode yet it’s so ingenious
This car was my dream ever since I was a kid so I bought it. the s85 is such a great engine but only for those that are willing to take care of it. Not a single check engine light, not a singe issue and no tow truck just a lot of oil changes (every 3k miles/5k km) and a unholy amount of gas and thats about it I take care of it like it’s a supercar sounds crazy but it’s the only way to enjoy the s85.
I literally just saw/heard one of these on the road....
I'm still in awe of the sound it makes.
FINALLY...... I've been asking for this episode for years
man your videos are getting better and better. Thank you for your time and effort into making these. I hope you'll create more BMW related content though.
One of my favorite cars based off of its engineering feats finally getting recognition
What an awesome video thank you for putting the time in and making this one man! 👍🏾
every now and then some engineering dreams find their way into reality, that was the e60 m5. my neighbour had one for for a few months, i used to time my walk to work in the morning to coincide with his cold starts. there are not many cars that can do, and this car will live forever in the hearts of real petrol heads.
love your use of ambient background tracks for the content, really well suited. 👍
Your videos are truly the highlights of my day… thank you 🙏🏻
often overshadowed by the smg issues, the e60 m5 is just one of those cars where when they are working right its absolutely perfect. the sound is incredible, even the smg the shifting speed for a mechanical gearbox controlled by hydraulics is incredible. the m5 is an absolute monster, these cars sail from 150-200MPH. german companies like g-power have strapped dual superchargers and taken these cars to 230MPH.
The engine check sign whenever rev counter is shown - is subtle 😂😂😂 I love this attention to details and the car too

Got to work on one, very complex
@@punksidegamingdrummingandg5156 I imagine they’re quite complex and expensive to maintain, given that Audi only ever made them for one year. But I always think of that engine when the topic of weird engines comes up, like Audi just did it to show they could.

I miss my 2006 M5, oh how I wish I didn’t let my wife drive it for a year back in 2016 because I’d still have it today. Well spilt milk and all. That car gave me 8 good years with only one major issue, the starter went out in 2014 other then that I never had any “major” issue.

I owned a 2008 e63 M6. I was lucky enough to have had only an engine cables issue: they melted. I had the electrical harness of cables replaced for €800 plus labour (16 hours!).
I sold the car after that but I am still grateful today to have experienced Lambo gear changes in a bmw thanks to the robotised manual gearbox
Love your explained series man. Keep up the good work!
Just wanted to say your videos are top notch and fantastically researched and detailed.
Soundtrack on this episode is insaaaaane
That unique-to-2000 Williams-BMW livery didn't always translate that well to the video game textures and McDonald's Happy Meal cars of the time, but on the actual race car itself it happens to be one of my all-time favorites. Not very colorful, but it's very smart, very classy. I think I also saw one in the BMW museum near my house when I was a young kid, along with the V12 LMR, and that's part of why I like those two so much as an adult.
People just love to hate BMWS trust me.
I don't drive my M6 often due to owning other cars. Sometime I think about selling it, but it only takes one drive to make me grin like crazy and accept the fact that they cost a lot to maintain. In our era of boring electric cars, nothing beats rowing my 6-speed near redline in a tunnel...
My father owned one. It was glorious, especially when he bought an aftermarket exhaust. God the school run was glorious.
I absolutely love your videos. Well laid out and how you convey the written word into car poetry is amazing. God bless you brother.
This is one of those cars that come one in a million; It came out doing the impossible, to this day BMW have not delivered anything like E60 M5's.
The S85 will be unanimously loved. No other super-saloon can beat this car hands down.
Toyota/Lexus 2UR-GSE. "Only" 472 HP in the IS500/RC500, but it lasts. Buy it once, change the oil every 5K and it's good for 150,000-200,000 miles. Having worked on BMWs as a tech up through the E46, the newer ones may be great.....but only until they're not, which is far too soon. These S85s do not not FW 190 engines. No thanks.
I love these videos so much they make my skin crawl and give me goose bumps
Waking up to a new 337 video in the morning 😊
