Before that Jones had split decision with Santos, Anik claims that Santos beat Jones better than Reyes did. And before that, Jones won a decision vs Anthony Smith who just lose to a Middleweight on short notice.
Let's not try and rewrite history. Jones *_was_* pushed by Reyes & Santos, the fights were close, *_but_* Jones outgrappled both at a time when the UFC's rules/scoring really benefited grapplers. Even if the grappling was nothing more than a TD and some _pointless_ control. A la DJ vs Cejudo 2.
Antony Smith was also on a tear, at his physical peak and was genuinely dangerous when he fought Jones. To try and discredit that win now, by comparing that Smith to his current standard is disingenuous.

There's an old saying in boxing: "As the heavyweight division goes, so goes boxing." I think someone put it in Dana's head that the same is true in MMA. When Ngannou left the UFC, Dana must have thought that would jeopardize the legitimacy of the heavyweight belt and, consequently, the whole UFC promotion. It became crucial for him to elevate someone else to the mythic stature that he's now giving JJ. You have to understand that, in Dana's head, the survival of the UFC is now dependent on defending JJ at all costs, whether by giving him easier fights or lashing out at reporters, as witnessed in that video.

I think the whole Jones discussion was a diversion to escape questions about the 303 card. IMO, it was mediocre at best, props to Pyfer, Talbott, & Poatan for saving the event. The rest of the card was unmemorable.

Dana White, to me, is the type of person who thinks he can buy everyone with money, and that was always the case. Because as much as he's been complaining, Jon Jones always came back the second the ufc brass dangled a check in front of his eyes. Why is it that everyone is overlooking Stipe Miocic because he got knocked out by Francis Ngannou, So what? He actually did the smart thing and took plenty of time away from getting punched in the head to allow his brain to properly heal unlike 90% of the fighters on the UFC roster. Every one counted him out after Daniel cormier knocked him out cold saying he was never going to be the same again and then guess what He took the time waited out, light his brain heal and then He came back and won the next two title fights against cormier. Francis Ngannou has the power that he has in his hands because he's juiced to the gills on performance enhancing drugs, If you look at pictures of him when he first started training in MMA and even when he first came into the UFC he was a lot smaller than he is now, everybody that he touches With one of his punches usually gets knocked out so why is Stipe singled out. I believe that he is going to shock the world when he fights. Jon Jones, I believe he's going to knock Jon Jones out cold, Stipe has really good wrestling take down defense And he has crisp, clean boxing and devastating knockout power, He has been putting on weight the right way putting on solid muscle.
