If DDP happened to be black, not a single person would have had a problem with his statement. Exactly how Leon Edwards did the same thing in the exact invers situation and no one said a thing. Purpose 1: Piss of Izzy to get into title talks. Point out that Izzy is disingenuous and hypocritical and only uses his heritage when it suits him. He paraded the belt in Nigeria for glory, said good luck and then he left again.
Purpose 2: Promote his gym in South Africa as the premier gym in Africa to attract the next gen African fighters.
Purpose 3: Indicate that training in Africa and training in first world countries are not the same. Does Auckland and American gyms get government sanctioned power cuts on a daily basis due to gross mismanagement and corruption? No. He trains with local fighters only and does not have the luxury of multiple UFC fighters in his camp. Puts his achievements into perspective. This is where a lot of fans / media are ignorant.
Purpose 4: Setting an example for kids and people in Africa that they can achieve success from home and that they can make a difference and that you don’t have to immigrate to be successful. Africa losing talented people only worsens the current situation.
But lets go for the easiest and clickbaitiest narrative: Racism.

This is insane. You acknowledge that DDP needed an angle to get attention, nothing like controversy. But he was smart about it. He stuck to a truth. And this writing off everyone's reaction as the racist's celebrating... it was the reaction that exposed the strangest little hypocrisy going on... the black man is British, the Chinese person is Australian, but the white person, generations deep, isn't allowed to claim his African status, and most certainly can't point out that Africa can burn as far as UFC champions are concerned. If you knew anything about history you would know that the Dutch never invaded South Africa, they settled in the Cape, which was sparsely populated at the time. Also, the first. dutch settlers were only men so they intermarried with the Khoisan people, which is why the majority of people now living in the cape are of mixed decent and speak Afrikaans while having Dutch surnames. South Africa was later taken over and colonised by the British.

DDP's comments was not based on where they were born, but more about where they build their mma career. He is the first one who did it in Africa. That doesn't take anything away from what the other African champs achieved, it doesn't make them fake, and Dricus never called them fake.
For Dricus to say he's the true African and the 3 black African champs are not - it is quite distasteful when you know the recent history of South Africa. Black South Africans are only recently taking their country back from white oppressors.
I think Dricus did this initially to force a title fight and build hype but its definitely a controversial statement coming from a guy who has Dutch heritage.
