- My lab notes for this month so far.
Basically, i've been optimizing sodium production. So far i can get it up to 60-70% yield just with cleaner techniques.
I've been making more hydrobromic acid and have and improved method of making it using sulfuric acid, and purifying it using sulfur or sodium metabisulfite.
i've also have a new piece of lab equipment called the clevenger apparatus.
I think i may have indeed solved the glassware degradation problem. But i want to run more testing and optimizing first.
You should make glassware made out of homemade glass that can be used for this purpose and will not dissolve in sodium hydroxide. If you can of course

It's awesome to see chemistry like this. I was always under the assumption that chemistry has basically been "figured out" and the only improvements that could be made involved hundreds of millions of dollars. It's awesome to see that improvements and discoveries can be made in an amateur setting (not implying you're an amateur, but your setup isn't out of the reach of the normal person.)

I really like this format of video for lab notes, where we get a broad overview of everything that's going on and get to see and understand your thought process on a variety of experiments. Think it's good, and sort of follows the "patch notes" model from games where you give us the really important, relevant information.
Also, a new video on the acid production would be appreciated, at least by me. Higher production values always worth it!

I definitely like the mixed-bag format for lab notes. Though I might also suggest that if you have a lab notes to make with a lot of content about just one topic, you could create a separate video for that. But if you have a bunch of smaller stuff to report on, condensing it into one lab notes video like this is definitely the way to go.
And far be it from me to discourage you to create videos about new and improved processes of topics you've already covered. I'm sure everyone would love to see updates and revisits of old content with new techniques. :)

I like this format. The topic-to-topic doesn't bother me at all. That said, some topics might be better served by a more focused video.

yeah an updated video on hydrobromic acid would be a good idea... not only does it contrast with your previous one, but it shows one of the joys of amateur chemistry - finding better ways of doing things thanks to time and experience. Love these lab notes videos with lots of updates... They always add some joy to my day...
Updating old work with better procedures is always encouraged =) Whatever you chose to do, you do fabulous work!
Regarding video types:. I think both formats are helpful for several reasons. The traditional focused single topic videos are good because they make specific knowledge available and searchable. The lab notes style adds value in revealing the thought process behind trial, error, and progress. I think it also addresses the misconception that these videos are insanely profitable and don't require support. One video on the final procedure (when perfected) will be great, but it masks the months of effort and the expense involved to reach that result.
Your lab notes approach helps teach people how to think about chemical process problems. That is very valuable work.
I would definitely enjoy updates to old videos. Improvement of existing processes is just as essential to chemistry as it is to many other subjects.
whatever video you make and get out there is great for me. given the adpocalypse and the number of creators i follow that have given up or cut back (or beg for some other form of sponsorship), it is a pleasure to see any of your stuff. thanks
I really like these combined lab note videos! They show that chemistry isn't as clean and easy as some videos make it look.
This format is pretty nice, and this way you can hear from us while you're doing the experiments which one's we're especially interested in.

And playing think, what's the reason you don't use stainless steel with a glass lid and pressure release valve? other than wanting to use just glass :)

I like the combined format. No problem with multiple topics, and like you say little things won't be left out. I also like the idea of revisiting prior topics when new methods or information are available.
I'm enjoying the Lab Notes videos. It's interesting to see what happens behind the scenes and the development of the process.
You should record a new video of the improved preparation of HBr -- so that viewers can have direct access to the best method of preparation.
BTW, your new preparation of sodium metal has my genuine admiration. A beautiful piece of work.
Have you seen Stanford's new NaK based flow battery results? Would really like to see that recreated
Yep, i've seen them, However, they require something called "beta alumina" for the membrane. Making that is not easy, requires thousand degree temps and expertise in electrophoretic manufacturing. I'd definitely love to try, but the capital cost of getting the equipment and taking the time to learn it is very high.
Ah yeah, I saw that. I wondered if membranes from more common materials would work for short term experiments as that selection seems to have been chosen to keep sodium from leeching through. Others might work for a little while before there's a leeching issue.
Current format is great! Its fun to see your thinking behind the projects as they progress. Also, I certainly would watch an updated HBr synthesis video.
Personally I support any videos which update older, dated methods with more improved, modern ones. Optimization never hurts, be it speed, cost, material availability, or percent yield. Regardless this channel has taught me a lot and is actually one of the main reasons I took an Honors Chemistry course in College. Thank you for inspiring me. Keep up the good work.
I LOVE the Lab-note vid's! Gives insight into the highs & lows of research/experimentation. I also like the idea of a complete updated video of a process you already posted...maybe give a version number? Good luck and my the gods of inspiration and broken glasswear look kindly upon you.
i've been subscribed since the early days and i gotta say the format you have now is pretty much perfect for what you're doing.
I love the lab notes videos. It's awesome to see what you're doing and what you're thinking, and that you're alive (lol). It's a lot better than no videos until a breakthrough and lets us give feedback on what you're doing, including having other amateur chemists (and possibly professional ones) chime in on ways you might be able to achieve what you're looking for.
I think the lab notes is a great format, you might not even need to seperate them. Infact i think this is a good way of presenting on your channel, that way you can show people your reactions as you go, answer peoples questions in follow up lab notes and then upload the optimised reactions seperatly (if people were interesting in your optimisation they could go back to your notes).
This is actually very encouraging to me. Ive started my phd in chemistry and am in the optimisation stages of a reaction. It's nice to see how other people conceptualise optimisations and gives me a better understanding with how to approach mine.
Yes. Make a full video of the HBr.
Great format. its much more comprehensive. And sure, if you have a better process for HBr then a video on it would be cool.
Also I don't mind you redoing/updating older videos. A, It gives you content to post so we know you didn't have your hands burned off and B, you don't really have to abandon longer projects for the chemistry

Please keep this lab notes video format. It's a nice view into how research can go off into tangents or be parallelized with other topics.

Absolutely like the lab notes even in pseudo-random order. Great for teaching techniques, particularly the techniques of problem solving as opposed to recipe-following.

I like the “lab notes” format it is interesting to hear all of the things you have been working on. Because you aren’t going into step-by-step procedures I would not expect to go back to these videos to reference them about a specific topic. Instead they let the viewer understand how much work you are putting into the channel even if it does not immediately result in a standalone video.
I would go an make the the new updated procedure video as it is easier for people to see one video that to have to watch two and combine them.
i like this way, because it is a fluid and efficient way to present how everything has been going for each experiment
I like the updates grouped into a nice little lab notes video and i thought it was a pretty elegant solution to keep people up to date with what you are doing. I also think that if your further optimizing techniques from topics you've already covered i think it's a good idea to make updated videos. I love your videos keep up the great work your one of the big reasons and inspirations I'm becoming a chemist myself.
This is great lab note information. Anyone who has run experiments knows when they find methodologies that can be applied to different applications it's note worthy at the moment of discovery; otherwise might be forgotten.
I think it may be a good idea to keep using the Lab Notes format while you're working on various experiments, and then film another video in which you can explain the optimization process after you've finished a determined project.
This way, we can follow your progress and maybe try to help in case of necessity, but we can also look for a reaction once the proccedure is optimized.
I'd also like to see the new process to purify hydrobromic acid because it's something I've been planning to be working on for a while, and i think it's interesting to keep all procedures updated with the best result.

Titanium can be mechanically applied to glass surfaces by literally rubbing it on. It would also be cheaper than a titanium container of sorts. The titanium oxide layer formed should be very chemically resistant. Of course, it’s still opaque, but it might be an option for coating the most vulnerable areas of the glass.

That may be a good idea since only the bottom parts of the glassware seem to show damage. Whether titanium is chemically resistance enough to survive the sodium making process is yet to be seen but it's worth a shot
Yeah, the reason I suggest it is mainly due to the removal process generally requiring piranha solution, but I got that information from Applied Science who may not have tested it using many of the chemicals used in this sodium production process. I DO know that from my experience, I haven't been able to remove it without also removing the underlying glass it was embedded in.
Only problem I see is getting your hands on authentic titanium, similar to nerd rage having issues getting Platinum

Improvement is always good. There is nothing wrong with redoing a video updating it with stuff you've learned since.

Updates on improved processes such as the bromide process sounds like a good opportunity.
I really like the current format for the videos with the lab notes on all the related topics. It paints a more complete picture of what's involved to get to something that works. Given the usefullness of hydrobromic acid, it would probably be worth a complete video, especially if you're running the process currently anyway.

I enjoy the lab notes version that encompasses all your ongoing work. Then have separate detailed videos for processes that warrant the extra detail. Updated processes would also be useful so some people who haven't watched all your old videos don't have to go to two or more videos to get all the information.

Definitely hbr video if it’s easy. You are such a wealth of knowledge and really look forward to all your videos. Hell I’d be all for revids of any of the old stuff you think is low quality video or whatever or have improved methods for. Keep it up and stay awesome skin!
I like the "What your doing now" update. Covers a lot of ground but very good.
I really like these quick videos on the topics you are focusing on and then make a more detailed video of some of the stuff.

If you add a table of contents to the description with links to the timecodes for each topic, you could have the best of both worlds.

I prefer separate videos. Guess I'm the only one. No matter what, I'll still watch.
Love this format! Also great for updating little tweaks to your existing procedures, but maybe in the future if you have tweaks for the same procedure spread across several lab notes videos then that's the time to condense them and make a new full procedure.

Separate lab notes would be nice thing when there is much to say about specific topic. This combined way of explaining is good, because it covers a lot in a small amount of time, also, it is very interesting to connect all the dots while You are covering several themes... Thank You for all Your presentations! Highly educational, and interesting, because they are practical, and also well explained, so people like me, with not much experience can follow, and still learn!

i like the format of these lab notes videos as they are currently. you do a great job of working through your thought process leading up to any breakthroughs and i feel like segmenting this into more videos would take away from that. sure facts are great but the process leading to discovery is just as interesting. the same goes for making updated videos when you refine reactions to higher yields. anyway have a good one!
I'd be fine with a new HBr video. Ideally I'd like to see videos for all four hydrohalic acids, but that could be understandable hard to arrange for obvious reasons.

I think you should do Lab Notes videos for progress on projects, especially long term ones like this, and have monolithic standalone videos (maybe longer-form?) for the synopsis of all the work up to that point. Sorta like the separate videos being the boss of a dungeon, but there's still loads of stuff to do before you can beat or even get to the boss.

Awesome. Thanks for the update. I'm liking these videos. It would be okay to make more focused lab note videos but I'd rather have more content. This style is also valuable to me, giving sort of behind the scenes insights into how a professional approaches amateur chemistry and research. The myriad topic presentation reinforces how much work is actually going on to make quality videos.

A video on the on the new HBr production would be neat. The increase in yield for the sodium project is great to hear! Now, that glassware damage seems hard to get around; is there nothing you can switch out the hydroxide ion for? I'm just an amateur, so it may not be possible to use a salt other than sodium hydroxide, but that's what I'm thinking.

I like the current format, it's sort of like a stream of conscious chemistry which tends to be good about including the issues that crop up as they occur and the solutions that are developed, as they occur. Excellent vids, good luck on the glass.
Current format outlining all of your current work in one video is great. I think some experiments deserve self containment though.
I would like an updated hydrobromic acid video. Also as far as lab notes go, I am pretty neutral. Love your content regardless.
One more thing. I’ve thought of setting up a distillation with sulfuric acid and NaBr wherein cold water is passed through the condenser jacket to condense Br2 and the vacuum adapter run to a graduated cylinder full of water. The rate of HBr evolution could be controlled by the temperature and if you had a fritted bubbler, there should be little to no problem dissolving most of the HBr in the water. That way, you’re producing 2 very useful chemicals at once. The ratio of Br2 to HBr could even be adjusted by changing the concentration of the H2SO4. If dry Br2 free of acids is desired it could just be redistilled. That way, no Br2 is wasted. Ive been wanting to try this but I don’t have adequate ventilation for preparation of pure, liquid Br2 nor do I have a good idea for a way to store it aside from ampules.
Actually, both formats work really well. You can do mix-bags like this to break up larger projects or knock out some fun-sized projects while you're doing something big.
