Lab Notes: Back from vacation, and trying to make lithium (and failing) - March 27th 2019

  • So i've been trying to make lithium in a similar way to making sodium as shown in previous videos. But lithium synthesis appears to be very slow. Fortunately, this proves that all our previous samples of sodium that was made using lithium is probably very pure since lithium cannot be made under the same conditions.

    As a geochemist, one of my biggest complaints is that there is no journal regarding what not to do. There have been times where I have tried a new techniques that I just know should work because the stoichiometry says it should, but when I do it, if things happen, its all the wrong things, only to find out that one of my colleagues tried a similar or the same process years ago and figured out that it didn't work then. Having a published "What not to do" journal would make life that much easier. I am glad I get to see other chemists fail (and you didn't fail, you learned it just took a LOT longer than you expected) and let other people know what they did and how it failed. For this I take my hat off to you sir!

    You can do it at room temperature with electrolysis. You do it with Lithium Phosphate and Sodium Phosphate and a salt bridge. At the reducing side, you build up a saturated solution of LiOH. past a certain concentration, the water reaction to LiOH is too slow and you get a buildup of solid lithium on the cathode. I haven't tried it but I did do an experiment that suggested making a salt-bridge using agar and NaOH works. So you get ion exchange from phosphate to hydroxide. The Sodium Phosphate is there in significant amounts simply for ionic strength in order to raise the solubility of Li3P04 to reasonable levels. There is at least one patent on this.

    While lithium hydroxide doesn't have an appreciable reaction with glass in the molten state, lithium metal does - this is why you can't melt lithium in a glass ampoule. Maybe try a different container with the same reactants and see if it helps? Something like stainless steel, if you have a setup for it?

  • @danielrouw2593
    @danielrouw2593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Just an observation, reaction rates appear to be in order of lowest melting points. Could phase limit some part of the reaction?

  • @mx._dobro-spec
    @mx._dobro-spec 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed that trend in reaction rates, and have planned to attempt this reaction with cesium. I have cesium carbonate which I've used to make cesium from a reaction with lithium, and mixing a solution of that in ethanol with an ethanol solution of sodium hydroxide should precipitate sodium carbonate and leave a solution of cesium hydroxide. This could then be dried with lithium tert-butoxide (although, now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I didn't think lithium metal would work), mixed with dry mineral oil (I have some that once had cesium metal in it and now is probably very dry and contains cesium compounds), and reacted.
    But I'm quite busy these days, so you might get to this first.

    I get my Lithium by opening 2032 batteries, I was amazed by the quantity there was in there.
    I discovered it when I needed to make a dummy/proxy 2032 battery for a project. when I opened a 2032 battery to empty it I noticed that inside the battery-button one side had a thick slab of Lithium which I could scrape of with a screwdriver.

    For making sodium from aluminium instead of magnesium, because of the highly unreactive aluminium oxide, I recommend finding an organic compound that is able to react with the aluminium oxide (alcohol or others with labile H) and expose the reactive aluminium layer? As you mentioned, the thermodynamics tells us it's favourable, so why not try that route? Also, find a counterion that binds well enough to aluminium, but not too strongly, so that the reaction will still proceed. Could try (i-PrO)3Al, I'm not sure. Just a hunch.

    Sodium aluminate isn't always NaAlO2. It can form various ways kinda like how sodium silicate can, so that might mess up your reaction more than you expect. I suspect that, like lithium, liquid sodium metal can also react with aluminum metal (which is in excess, so you know it is present enough to cause problems) to form intermetalics that probably won't break up even in a dioxane cleaning.
    Aluminum's lower reactivity than magnesium (particularly at these temperatures) doesn't help get the reaction started enough for the above possible problems to start causing issues. Since aluminum isn't very alkaline like magnesium, it may run into a problem that the catalysts just aren't enough without going to much higher temperatures where they probably aren't stable anyway.

    Hey, we all need a break sometimes. I'm excited to see how the Li and K experiments progress.
    On my own, I've been playing around with ascorbic acid as a reducing agent; so far I've used it successfully on Cu and Fe salts. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for alkali metals, but I'd be interested in what its limits might be in that regard and why.

    • @cal7103
      @cal7103 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ascorbic acid will theoritcally wont work because it needs to be in a solvent, which will most likely react with the metal. The alkali metal atom is an extremely strong bond to the hydroxide. So it may not be possible. You can try, but most likely it wont work.

    • @scabbarae
      @scabbarae 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cal7103 Yeah, should've specified I was wondering about using a less reactive solvent, although of course that might make dissolution difficult. Like I said, I don't expect it to work so simply, or it would have been done already, but fun to mess around with.

    Did you try a strong base as a catalyst? Such as, precisely, potassium tert-butoxide? My own theory about this way to reduce alkali metal hydroxides is that the use of a strong base abstracts a proton from the hydroxide, and the rest of the reaction follows. With potassium, the potassium tert-butoxide is formed in situ (it is a stronger base than KOH). With sodium, probably sodium-menthoxide has a greater pKb than sodium hydroxide. Since lithium hydroxide is a weaker base than potassium hydroxide, I wonder what would happen if you tried with a tiny amount of KOH (or potassium tert-butoxide) as a catalyst, and not an alcohol.
