I don't understand why they can't just put your "questionable" videos behind an 18+ disclaimer instead of giving you a strike. There are plenty of other videos about questionable stuff not even close to educational given that treatment.
Yt is just BS, there are however workarrounds like bitchute but we'r looking for better alternatives... not to back up videos but to back up comments because they are way more valuable

If you believe the coalescence issues stem from charge on the sodium, could you test with a nonreactive (eg anodized titanium) pair of electrodes running a small current through the solution? That might be enough to get the smaller globules to begin merging together at the site of one or the other electrode, and if you keep the voltage low enough it shouldn't cause any unwanted electrolysis reactions. I would predict that any globules would stick to one electrode on contact, and readily coalesce with others on the electrode, while the other would repel the globs.
You should fight this. Yes the video might be dangerous but it's educational and to go and make something from your video would be the fult of the person who attempted it. In that video you took all the precautions necessary to not put your self in too much danger. Plus not being able to recuperate the lost revenue is pouring salt into a wound.

Even those if you want to take it to the eventual conclusion, It's the dose not the chemical. A cooking show explaining how to make a triple layer double fudge cake would essentially be poison to a diabetic.

You should appeal the strike and action taken against you. You do put disclaimers and warnings in your videos before you do the procedure, after you explain the basics of what your making. So, you should be able to fight this action taken against you as it's not fair.
The fundamental problem is that the strikes are largely automated, and if the case is elevated to an actual human, that human is unlikely to be an expert on the video's subject matter, and hence unlikely to make an informed judgement.
But also, of a human evaluated the contents of the video, they will see that there is a disclaimer/warning saying not to reproduce what was done unless you have had proper training to do the type of procedure, and even then it's not advised to do it.

The strikes really suck. This was one of the first channels I subbed to. Even stayed subscribed for that year or two that he was at a new workplace, and couldn't film anything at all. When he came back it was such a happy moment. Hopefully the channel lives on for a while, and he's able to release at least a few more great projects.
You should do what CodysLab did, and create a backup channel in case anything happens

Wouldn't it be possible to wash your Urushibara nickel precursor with dilute H2SO4 to get the zinc oxide out similar to how you described washing your zinc metal?

Have you considered putting high-bitrate versions (what you upload to youtube) of these videos into a torrent or something? So people can still get a copy of them if you channel gets shut down.
I say torrent, because paying to host all of them online would probably be expensive if they're rarely downloaded.

When I saw the sodium cyanide video I thought of the classic Ngaio Marsh mystery novel Death in Ecstasy. A woman is poisoned using sodium cyanide. One of the suspects owns an 1890s book on chemical oddities and several other suspects have access to it - and it describes a method of making sodium cyanide. The entire synthesis isn’t given, and maybe it’s not based on a real one, but it uses sheep’s wool, iron filings, and sodium carbonate among other things if memory serves.

That sodium cyanide video showed up on my recommendations about a week ago. It is probably not a coincidence that this occurred when it was deemed a strike against your account.
If I were you, I'd start uploading videos unsafe for TH-cam, as well as other videos that got sacked a looong time ago, to other platforms.
Problem is that nobody is on those platforms. TH-cam has a de facto monopoly on video sharing, at least in the English-speaking world.
This is why, to me, "it's a private company, it can do what it likes" is no defence any more.

@@tmfan3888 In fairness to western governments, tech companies are an exceedingly tricky case for policymaking. You can't break them up because they are natural monopolies; you can't nationalise them because their services are not confined to any one nation. Regulation is probably the best solution, but it remains very difficult because the amount of data these companies carry is just mind-bogglingly vast. It's tricky for anyone to regulate, let alone a domestic government that has a thousand other priorities.
Have you ever tried trioxane in place of dioxane for the sodium purification/coalescence step?
I've done thorough research on terpin hydrate production, found nearly all possible receipts and tried synthesis by myself... successfully.
There are several important points regarding this synthesis.
Firstly, acid concentration and temperature matter a lot. Depending on these two parameters, you either get desired product or a lot of byproducts and various junk. Terpin hydrate is the product of hydration of terpenes, which occurs at low temperatures (30C and below) with 15-65% strong acids like sulfuric or nitric. If temperature is higher or acid is much more diluted, dehydration occurs instead of hydration.
So, you have good chances to get terpin hydrate out of your first run (unless you let it get too hot), just need to remove organic layer, neutralize aqueous layer and maybe wait a couple of hours (since the product has a tendency for oversaturation).

@@NurdRage You're welcome! Actually, I did this research and syntheses to kind of assist you in trying out terpin as a catalyst.
A quick update: neutralization of acid in the aqueous layer might be unnecessary, crystallization centers can be created instead. For example, by simply wetting a glass rod with solution, letting it dry and scraping formed crystals back into solution. On the other hand, complete crystallization can take up to 24 hours at RT this way. According to literature process is somewhat accelerated and yield is improved by warming mixture to 35C (looks like terpin hydrate has the lowest solubility in water at this point).

If you can't have stuff on TH-cam, *please* find another place to have it up. Your videos are arguably among, if not the best on TH-cam, and the knowledge and experience you bring in your videos cannot be underestimated.
I'd argue that while some people could be idiots, the net benefits of having the Sodium Cyanide synthesis video outweigh the risks, not the least of which being the fact that if people want to do something, they'll find a way to do it, using less safe methods and increasing the risk of something going wrong. At the beginning of that video, you outlined the risks and created a strict procedure that would be safer than other alternatives (If memory serves- I haven't seen the video in a while, and it's not like I can watch it again now, due to the situation)

Could you add a small amount of magnesium at the end of a run to coalesce the sodium?
Great as usual. what about using an excess of sodium hydroxide but add a large solid chunk of magnesium metal. It might react slowly due to the lower surface area but still give the desired charge effect. Also would you like us to keep a backup of your videos for you in case of a ban?

For what's it worth, in my old days I have tried Urushibara nickel in many versions and never got any decent results from it. For people looking into nickel catalysts, I would suggest looking into homemade Raney nickel from a Al/Ni oxide thermite reaction instead.
At first I was startled that your terpin hydrate scheme seemed to show a migration of the tertiary hydroxyl group from the ring carbon to the isopropyl carbon, but then I decided it was a mistake :)
It goes through a double bond intermediate as mentioned in the video.
you can also purify nickel from actual nickel coins, which is a mixture of Nickel and Copper. Dissolve in HCl, then run it through a chromatography column with cellulose using first acetone-hcl as a mobile phase, then dilute hcl.

I know this is random but the talk of nickel chloride made me remember. Does nickle chloride react with aluminum? I tried this with nickel chloride I made with pottery grade nickel carbonate after about 30 minutes no reaction occured but according to the reactivity series it should work. What could be the issue?

Ocimene, terpineol, cymene, limonene, Pinene, linalool, myrcene, caryophylline, even beta: these will have future use in advanced organics, even cubane synthesis starting points, perhaps.
Zinc powder can sometimes have a pasty texture to it, it just means it's very fine, the color should be much darker though, powdered zinc has a dark grey appearance, when I used Zinc that looked like yours in organometallic reactions it was completely unreproducible.

Hey Nurdrage, I may be able to send you some samples of catalyst used in hydrocracking and ethylene production/purification.
The sodium globules may also be coated with some gunk that prevents them from coalescing. I saw a video that used a bit of isopropanol in oil to clean the surface of sodium or potassium. Perhaps n-butanol or some other alcohol with boiling point above 100 C will work?
The gray powdery precipitate presumably is magnesium hydroxide with some very fine sodium particles. Can it be separated by mechanical means? Like, if you could raise the density of the liquid to 1.0 or so, the sodium should float, while the Mg(OH)2 should still stay at the bottom. But I can't think of an easy way to do that...
You could also get a very fine stainless steel mesh and make a sieve out of it and a steel can.
NurdRage, I feel like it’s messed up that TH-cam removed your video on sodium cyanide synthesis. I can sort of see why, as it is a toxic substance and can be used to make drugs (although it has way too many other uses for this to be justified). Specifically I refer to benzyl cyanide. Easy to make from benzyl chloride and any metal-cyanide compounds. And benzyl chloride is a precursor to some drugs as well I might add. Also easy to produce from benzyl alcohol and HCl. Both BzCN and BzCl are fairly sought after for the production of amphetamine and methamphetamine. I’m sure that can’t be the sole reason why your content was taken down, but it might have played a part. Many people have pointed out that chemistry is limited to a set of reactions, all of which are used for licit purposes, but some can be used otherwise for illicit purposes. It’s just plain unreasonable to ban all chemistry videos from TH-cam as soooooo many can be used in the manufacture of controlled substances. I mean, a large portion of Nile’s videos can be used to aid in the production of amphetamines and substituted amphetamines. His video on piperine, for instance, helps with the synthesis of MDMA or MDA, via the piperine -> piperic acid -> piperonal -> MDP2P -> MDMA plan. Or his somewhat suspicious video on methylamine, also used in the manufacture of methamphetamine and MDMA. Then there’s his video on N2O production. It is exactly copied to make oxycodone from codeine in a catalytic hydrogenation. Anyway, my point is that chemistry is too universal for it’s removal from educational channels like yours. Sorry for the rambling! I’m rooting for you NurdRage.

@Dawson Taylor - I am on the same page. NaCN is very important in terms of inorganic chemistry, particularly in the recovery of metals. NaCN is also much easier in terms of post process disposal (sunlight, hypochlorite, etc) than some of the other process options such as highly concentrated oxidising acids.

How would the zinc oxide get through the filter? It should be insoluble in water and methanol. Or is zinc chloride coming through?
Okay so question: im doing a research paper (for high school) on sodium production and im having trouble getting sufficient yeilds. My set up is a 250ml erlyenmeyer filter flask with some tubing attached to the filter thing and running into a graduated cyclinder thats capped lightly with a stopper on a hot stirring plate. I added 150ml mineral oil, 15g sodium hydroxide, 20g of magnesium ribbon, and about a gram of lithium. I then heated for about 8 hours between 120-150. I then added about 10ml of tert butyl alcohol and raised the temperature to a range between 180 and 250 for 24 hours. I didnt have the best stirring (magnesium was a little too big). When i checked it out, I was getting a dense gas coming off of the solution (im assuming it was mineral oil) and not much of a change other than some of the magnesium turning slightly yellow. i started putting in more alcohol and the solution started to bubble and lose heat, but quickly came to an end. I kept adding until it stopped reacting (30ml ish). I never noticed any bubbles being formed and only got about half a gram of sodium (i think atleast). Is there anything wrong with my procedure?
Too much alcohol. do not use more than 2mL for that amount of magnesium.

Is it not possible to centrifuge out the sodium dispersion from the slurry? There are some DiY mechanical solutions out there using string whereas a commercial option may only cost a few hundred dollars.
You can easily centrifuge it and I believe he discussed this previously. He wants to make the process accessible with the least equipment possible. He already has discovered significantly more simple methods that require slightly more uncommon equipment, but is dedicated to making this viable with only cheap, domestic chemicals and with basic labware. For the same reason, he doesn’t use palladium as discussed above.
Maybe add a surfactant to mix the terpene/water layers?

I'm not sure if it's legal but since you're Canadian you can get nickel metal from some older Canadian nickels, dimes and quarters.
Are these dimes and quarters still used as currency? Than it is illegal. If they are not accepted anymore it's legal. Pretty much the same rule everywhere in the world. Can't destroy actual currency, but who gives a damn about old currency?
+@@Metalhammer1993 To answer your question: yes they are still used, it's just that none of their modern coins are made of actual nickel just like old pre-1982 bronze American pennies are still used despite their change to copper-plated zinc in 1982.
I'm not Canadian so I don't know how their laws are, all I know is some of their older coinage were made from pure or nearly pure nickel which you will no longer find in their more modern coinage.
It's illegal, but the chances of you being caught if you do it on a small scale are almost non-existent.

BTW even if it wasn't illegal I still wouldn't condone destroying coinage (even older ones) for their metal content but if others are willing to take the risk then go ahead as it's none of my business.
