I agree. When you really pay attention and listen to Eddie's rhythm playing it's almost unbelievable that he came up with some of those patterns, let alone Dave coming up with these melodies over the top. Crazy good stuff.

I, as well, love the intervals in Light Up The Sky. One of the best things Ed ever recorded.

  • @donald-parker

I always thought he approached rhythm guitar like the right hand of a keyboard player and did a really good job of keeping sonic separation between his guitar and Mike's bass. They had a huge sound for a trio and I think this had a lot to do with it. And it takes a lot of trust in your bass player to do that. Which speaks well to both Ed and Mike.

It’s so cool seeing someone that knows some music theory actually explain all of these intervals. These are things I’ve been playing since the early 80’s but never knew the names of the intervals and how they work. I just figured them out, out of necessity. People would ask me how I was playing those riffs and I could never explain it because I had no idea. I always wished I could teach, but I’m no teacher. I wish I had a teacher like you back in the day. My path would have been quicker.

Charlie, this is amazing. Watching this was SO eye opening, I almost cried. There's so much I've learned watching this ONE tutorial, and I'm 60 this year, and Arthur is setting up in my joints...so I don't need to tell you that chord formations on the fretboard are not only frustrating, but painful. Voicing out these phrases while not needing to be a phalangeal contortionist will be bringing me SO much joy for my degree of noodling.
And while EVH will basically remain Royalty of this type of playing, I'd urge you to open up Dirty Weapons from Killer Dwarfs, and give Mike Hall a quick listen. These types of 3rd fill rhythms are all over that record, and sound no less awesome.
From the bottom of my ❤; thank you..for opening up a very easy to comprehend tutorial for this ol' noodler...
(I'm linking this one to my brother, who is also an aspiring noodler😉)

Thanks, I listened to Dirty Weapons based on your recommendation here...that song kicks ass! And yes, a great example of those same types of riffs. Sorry to hear Arthur wants to move in...he's a bad roommate. I just turned 56 and know a little about joints...if there's anything you can do to minimize systemic inflammation, it can really help! 🎸🎸🎸

Arthur hates curcumin! What is curcumin? It comes from the spice, tumeric. It is a great supplement to take for inflammation and as an alternative antibiotic. I get the NOW brand on amazon. 👍 Hope your jointers are feeling better soon.

Most of us have likely done some of this, but aside from feeling like a cheat because it’s so technically accessible, I for one have never fleshed this out and exploited it. Even as a youn'un I always said there's something diff about how he and Hendrix played. They weren't chugging bar chords like most other players, but I couldn't put my finger on explaining what i meant. I wasn't till I was older where I could explain exactly what you're talking about. These 2 guys made me always try to NOT play straight bar cords when I was trying to make up my own music. Nice vid! SWEET TONE! What's yer set up feller?

Cool comment - thanks!!! Tone is coming from Tonex…. That “capture” is from a guy called Top Jimi…. Specializes in VH tones.

OMG Charlie, my hat is off to Edward VH for his spirit of innovation. Thank you for highlighting his expertise and finesse that too often goes unnoticed. I'm working on this!!

Excellent tutorial Charlie. Thanks so much for giving me a little more to work on. I never truly appreciated the power of intervals until now.

Great tutorial, and glad to see you are a fan of British amplification! Is that a Lacey VC50? I had one in my giggling days, it was a bit of a monster but after upgrading the tubes and speakers it screamed so sweet ;)

Good eyes - that is indeed the VC50. Longtime Laney user, and have had several Marshalls also. Thanks for commenting!!

Cool video and nice guitar. I've always loved King Edward's rhythm guitar playing too. He just dug into those strings. Which VH song is that from 2:18 to 2:40?

Love how you break this stuff down. Removes a lot of the complicated "mystery" and makes playing this stuff more approachable at different skill levels. 🤘🎵🎸

Can I have a do over? I began guitar in the dark ages too. No videos. No iPhones. Just albums, the radio and your ears. Yeah and emphasis on barre chords with lame books that had tabs which didn’t sound like what was actually being played. . Give a kid a crap a## guitar with high action and heavy strings on a fat neck , then make them think they need to hold a fully barred F chord for multiple measures. That’s one way to lose enthusiasm.

Hey, do you know how to play the double stop intervals like this, in Harmonic and Melodic minor scales? I was trying to figure it out but it was not right. I can not find a single video on youtube on how to do that!
