The tone he's getting is THE sound. Of course it's his technical mastery. But I now feel a craving for a junior. His touch is everything don't kid yourself.
It’s not “everything”. You can learn that touch, but if you do it on a strat it won’t sound the same. A bad player will sound bad on any guitar, but equipment matters. Besides craving for a junior is just a sign of good taste so keep that up. I’m gonna be looking for a TV double cut Jr shortly myself.
Bought the course yesterday. A very wise move. Dylan is a great educator. He gives a thorough and clear presentation without dumbing it down. Only problem is that I keep looking for the like button and the comment field. So I'llI have to do that here: 👍👍👍👍👍 😎 Kudos to Rhett for helping him spread the message. ✌✌
Great great playing both of you. I've been playing slide for 45 years and it's such a joy to see you younger folks being so good at explaining the physics of melody shapes and slide playing technique. Cool when Rhett just slightly touched the chords behind Dylan's explanations, gave it a nice harmonic context for everything. Thanks guys!
Dylan is one of the best TH-cam finds I have come across. He belongs on major stages around the world doing his thing. He also seems like a really humble and down to earth guy. Someone you want to root for. Get em brother. You are a beast.
Dylan seems to be a great teacher and genuinely humble guy for someone so talented. Always avoided slide because the songs I'm playing are mostly standard tuning, but it would be cool to be able to use it in soloing.
Strangely, I came to learning slide via an unlikely path. I am a keyboard player who got turned on John McLaughlin in the seventies, which led to an obsession with Jan Hammer and pitch bending on synth, which led back to guitarists. As you point out in this video, the slide gives you great expressive opportunities to play with pitches in beautiful ways. For me, it is almost like one of those new midi synth controllers that let the player do things that are hard to do on fixed fret/fixed keyboard instruments. Dylan sounds great and, since I play slide only in standard tuning, he has reinforced the route that chose long ago. Very inspiring. Thanks to you both.
This was great! Very usable, relatively uncomplicated shapes. The practice suggestions (e.g. "try playing a drone alongside" or "come up with a lick without the slide and then learn it with the slide") are actionable enough that I'm gonna try them next time I pick up my guitar. Thank you for this!.
I learned in a modified open G because the wood bodied duolian Dobro came with this tuning when I got it. Sounded like a cross between Sun House and Keith Richards. Can’t wait to try all this in standard. Thanks. I love how in standard you have all the major triads on the dgb strings and minor triads on the gbe strings. Melody is all about the triads for me. Well done guys
I started playing slide way back in 1975. First in standard tuning, then in open E and G and finally in open C. Standard tuning is the most flexible if you put the slide on your ring finger and you can fret behind it and get the best of both worlds, using the slide more as an accent/vibrato while not fearing out of tune notes in runs. Open tunings lend themselves to idiomatic riffs associated with each tuning.
Cool. I’ve been teaching myself standard tuning slide and exploring a similar approach. I need to take his course. I’ve been doing open tuning slide for a while, but there are Hill Country Blues songs (Going Down South) that are in standard but the break played by Kenny Brown is slide. Doing that while thumbing a drone is wonderful.
This was neat to watch and some cool ideas. Slide on standard tuning is definitely not easy to make work. The only guitarist I think who TRULY mastered it (in a non-blues style) was George Harrison.
YES 🙌: George had a different thing going on and it wasn’t Blues, it had that kinda Hawaiian thing to it, I Loved his Slide Playing, I think he might of double tracked some of it as well, it was definitely unique to his playing.. God Rest his Soul he was Great 🙌⭐️❤️🌞🎸
Other than not needing to learn a new tuning I wonder if there are other musical benefits to go with standard or if you were only going to play slide would open be better ?
This is great. I also started in open E many years ago but I’m such a fan of George Harrison’s slide playing I had to learn to do it all in standard tuning. Also, for a juicer slide tone, try the glass Liquislide. It’s amazing.
rhett is a time traveler , he is in the led zeppelin bath blues festival 1970 video 1.56 in , he is laying on a grassy hill with sunglasses enjoying the concert ...
Did the discount offer go away? I just tried and see no discount with that link. I would buy with that break, but probably not right now otherwise. It is great stuff.
How high do you recommend the action to play a slide like that?? Or is it best just to go down to the luthier and say can you set this up for slide get a new nut and everything??
Great Video! My slide issue is not the scale shapes but keeping the slide from banging on the neck. The only fix I've found so far is raising the action and heavier strings. Which means I can't really play slide on my main guitar since its set up so low. I've tried glass and metal slides and still cant get it right. Any suggestions?
My suggestion is learn to play Masco Blues by Martin Simpson (available on YT). A slide instrumental played in open G on an acoustic capo'd at third fret. If you can learn to play that half as clean and clear as Martin you will be able to play slide on just about any guitar however low the action! (I've been trying to learn it for around 20 years on and off and have just about mastered the first four bars....)
So it goes, 1. Dylan, 2. Josh Scott, 3 Rhett? Oh wait! Forgot which channel I was watching! 1. Dylan, 2 Rhett, 3. Josh. Gotta keep these things straight.
So, you didn't specifically state it (unless I missed it), but my guess is that the "normal" way to learn to play with a slide is to use an open-tuning because you can press the slide up against a single fret and grab a chord with all 6 strings? Or a pair, or whatever -- any combination of strings you pick will be a chord because of the tuning, yes?
Failed so far to find a slide that properly fits my pinkie finger. I know my technique and enjoyment of the technique suffers because my slide is too big and it’s skews the physiology.
I love the sound of slide but can never be bothered to try it because I hate changing tunings. I need something where i can quickly go back to playing without slide if I need to... So this is awesome.
Stop saying "Like" and "You Know" all the time. It may be ok in America but in countries that speak English, it is really annoying. Your videos are great but like really, like, hard to watch, like, you know .....
Thanks so much for having me Rhett, had a great time talking about some standard tuning slide! 🤘🏻
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Harrison was mostly a standard tuning player right? And a very unique slide style he had too.
@@Neptunestef I think he was... A good example is How Do You Sleep?
Thank you Dylan, it was a helpful video. One question: How do you set your action for playing fretted and slide styles?
Love your explanations Dylan!
@@chanchopancho glad to hear it was helpful! My standard-tuned guitars are all set up with pretty much average/medium-low action and 11-49 strings

This is how I’ve always played. Standard tuning slide on the pinky finger. The one real difference in our playing is that I’m not very good.
Great video, thanks Rhett & Dylan. I've attempted this in the past, time to get back to working on it.
Dylan seems to be a great teacher and genuinely humble guy for someone so talented. Always avoided slide because the songs I'm playing are mostly standard tuning, but it would be cool to be able to use it in soloing.

I love when you bring Dylan on. Great video
Excellent, insightful approach to making Slide Guitar playable while still in Standard Tuning. Thanks
As someone who's been dabbling in Slide in standard for s little while now, this was ridiculously helpful

I really admire you guys with the slide. I’ve been playing guitar and bass almost 40 years and I stink when slide. I stink on guitar too but I tried 😊

Dylan intonation is amazing. Many people just suck at the basic including me 😅😅
Thanks, guys! Not enough gets said about standard tuning slide. Well done!
Uh-fuggin'-gree with your accolades regarding Dylan... 🤘
Dylan is the bomb!! Been following him for awhile.. great player & teacher...

Dylan sure makes it look easy. Great playing guys !
Very well played and great sound my friends!!🎸

Holy cow, his tone is liquid silk! Thanks for sharing this!
Love all your videos , you’re an amazing musician and you never cease to amaze me!
Damn cool video Rhett! You both are killer players! Gonna go work on my slide playing a little now. 🎸
this was killer. I don't play slide but it made me feel like it is possible. thanks
Thanks Rhett!
Great lesson, thanks guys!
Great video, thank you Rhett!
Amazing video, right up my valley
Killer lesson!
Okay I'm sold. Std tuning slide it is.
This is how I have always played slide (mostly through ignorance) feeling wrongly justified watching this . Many thanks
Thanks! 😊
Good stuff man ! Going to see Warren in a few weeks !
Wow! I love this video. This is great!
Glad to see you two hooked up!
Great tone
Blimey that intro sounds great
Really impressive.

When he played great gig in the sky that was amazing. And it's hard to do floyd justice.
What slide is your guest playing?
He sounds better on one string than I do on several.
🎶😶🎶

3:24 for first 3 notes my brain was like: Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker 😄
George Harrison is the standard tuning slide master. Check out "How do You Sleep" solo.
I have a ring finger slide, although it feels too large. Unsure if pinky wouldn't be easier.
That amp sounds like M A G I C !!!

Rhettmeister Shull!!!
First thing I noticed on Dylan’s LP Jr was the truss cover…Denton was a mate and he is so missed. 🤘🏻🫶🏻
siiiiick
Sounds like Eric Clapton from the cradle kind of tone I dig it

Yes, this is correct. Open E is the most common tuning for slide, for that reason.
What gauge strings are we using?
Content is awesome… BUT…. the sharpness of the camera and lens… nice!
Hey! I just clicked the link for 50% off. Is $150 the discounted price?
What’s up Dylan and Rhett??
I’m betting even without the slide, he’d still kick anyone’s ass on guitar.
Failed so far to find a slide that properly fits my pinkie finger. I know my technique and enjoyment of the technique suffers because my slide is too big and it’s skews the physiology.
I noticed George Harrison played slide on the second finger, not the small finger.
Slide guitar separates the men from the boys. I'm boys
I expect to see Josh from JHS here soon…
Doesn’t Josh play slide in Drop D?
Please, Paul Gilbert is better than Josh
Josh has better slide tone, right?
I love the sound of slide but can never be bothered to try it because I hate changing tunings. I need something where i can quickly go back to playing without slide if I need to... So this is awesome.
💜💜👍
Josh Scott’s slide tone is better… 😏
💥🔥 SICK 🔥 BURN 🔥 💥

I can only play slide in standard tuning. I suck at open tuning slide....
I prefer my ring finger for slide. 🛝. Good discussion. I prefer open E or G tuning. Nice playing.
