Very cool stuff. Quite like the Jonas Wood paintings though I would say the drawing technique has more in common with Van Gogh's mark making who obviously antedates Hockney by many years. For the pictorial space I'm seeing a more Alex Katz vibe. Fun theme to do a take on Manet's Dejeuner Sur L 'herbe . Even like Cecily Brown's piece. There I said it. ! Big fan of Rachel Harrison's work.
It's very much painting as drawing. The flat planes of color are more or less a backdrop for the marks. In that sense, I would say his work is a further iteration of the work of Jasper Johns (the crosshatch). ... What (I think) he has in common with Van Gogh is a fondness for the composition of Japanese prints (e.g., Hiroshige's Nagakubo No. 28).

Very much appreciated as always to see such excellent gallery spaces to view art otherwise unseen by your viewers. A suggestion in kind to the videographer, when moving in closer on a painting that the camera be level as well that the entire painting be in view, straight on and still motion for a brief second in the least. 😁

Love the pronunciation of Quarles! That’s my last name as well, and think I’ll start pronouncing it that way! 😂
The Surname, Quarles, has an English derivation. Maybe you’ve heard of the famous english poet from the 1500’s Francis Quarles. Anyway, not sure how Christina pronounces it, but our family pronounces our same surname similarly to quarrels.
