The motive behind the "soul ripping/being trapped in his realm" is that 2017X assumes that the player would love to be turned INTO the character they choose to play as because its their favorite character, the same reason he's "become Sonic". He thinks he's freeing them from their mortal prison to roleplay as their favorite characters, and who wouldn't want that, right?
Um Actually, 2017X doesn’t rip people’s souls to trap people because he wants them to roleplay as their favorite characters. He believes that people ARE the characters and they’re just trapped within a flesh prison.
Wiki also stated that raven (the owner of 2017x) is gonna change him making him different from what sonic legacy interpreted him as, he has a unfinished story for now, but he has a big potential.
Fun fact: 2017X litterally just paints his arms and feet to look like Sonic's gloves and shoes Hell, he even paints his *eyes* green to match Sonic's (Or atleast I think so according to the art)
My favorite part about "Sonic" is how he isn't exactly evil, like his other .exe counterparts. He ain't a good guy, but at the same time he isn't a bad guy. He's just delusional, and if he took your soul, he wouldn't hurt you, again, unlike his counterparts. Also, I gotta say, his design in the original story is still pretty good. Specifically his "story-accurate" recreated designs on the Sonic Oddities Wiki.

Only specific characters have the potential to take him out in a solo encounter like Shadow(without inhibitors or Super Form), Silver(Psychokinesis Break/Super Form), Blaze at base would bully him cause his powers are mostly Pyro based but she MUST take her burning form to even go on par with The Beast Form, Mephiles and Iblis as Solaris could handle him but will have a hard time but they'll eventually win, Knuckles(Hyper Form) no explanation needed for him, Tails(Super Tails) he will survive but would be able to severe injure 2017X, Neo Metal could handle him but Overlord would def win just like on same diff with Solaris and finally The REAL Sonic alone would give him trauma(Basically characters in their stronger/strongest form would win). Mostly 2017X wouldn't go after characters if they're like together in a group as much as I've seen tho. (Saying this all based on the info I got overtime)
