The original Tomb Raider games are like comfort food. Such a peaceful zen experience exploring with cool music and minimal other people or character interactions.
I’m glad they didn’t just cut tank controls. It is so engraved into my system seeing how the new controls work bothered me greatly(the way she moved just looked so off).This is how to do a remaster help the new players but let the veterans play it like we remember. It’s perfect.
Yeah, looking at the walkthroughs it seems the new controls don't quite work with the platforming. The stages were built around the tank controls after all.
How can it be smoother? you can't even backflip without drawing your guns first. And as you cannot grab while holding guns, the modern controls are just a step backward in the moveset.@@moudacouldashoulda195

I'm honestly surprised you didn't point out the fact that whenever the characters talk, there's realistic mouth movement, just like in real life, that's another feature added to this game trio.
A couple more features they've added, from what I spotted in other videos. 1) In Tomb Raider 3, Lara can roll in and out of crawlspaces, just like in Chronicles. 2) If you press action as Lara is about to run off a ledge when she drops, she can quickly grab the edge to keep herself from falling like in Legend.
I think I tried one of these for like 20 minutes one time as a kid, not sure if it was the original or a sequel… but I’m glad I finally get to play them in full.
I was 13 when i first played tomb raider in 1996. Glad to be old enough to have experienced these masterpieces back then when i was a teen. Counting down the days for this collection ❤
About the frame rate you should mention that when you switch to the original graphics mode the game locks to 30fps, only the remastered runs at 60fps and over
There was a duck roll? I didn't even know about it. I only recently found out about the summersault when swan diving and the fact you could move sideways when monkey swinging.
Seen the footage and thank god for it. It will make getting out of crawl spaces much easier. Although you may still need to check what is on the other side just in case there is a trap ;)
I really hope that a retail version will come out at some point. What I also wish is that they remaster the other 3 Tomb Raider games from Core. Angel of Darkness in particular needs a control overhaul and bug fixes. The game would definitely look really good with RTX lighting and graphical update.
Loving this remaster, downloaded it last night and played for a good 3 hours ( haven’t played video games for that long in YEARS). All I can say is it’s a dream come true. Also very nicely done video thank you!!
I’m genuinely excited for the remaster. Been literally counting down the days until release. Even though this is a remaster it FEELS like we’re getting a new Core Design-era Tomb Raider game for the first time in 24 years. Super hyped!
As far as I knew the gold versions of the TR games were lost media at this point other than the TR 1 and 2 Mobile ports wich did include the gold expansions as well. Good to see them finally accessible again
How quickly you people forget PC "downloadable copies" of those been around on the internet for many years. the Gold expansions dont even need the disk to launch with right files copied over to where its installed. In any case I'll of course get around to buying steam copy eventually for TR3 and its xpack mostly, not to mention CUSTOM levels when it inevitably becomes a thing people make for it. Fans already been busy uploading all kinds of weapon and outfit texture mods! 😅
4x more quicker if we could also get the TR3 sprint/roll animation working as well via PC tools and animation editor. or more simply have a program that can go ahead just port all of 1 and 2s levels to TR3.
When looking up it’s always a black sky, in the original love how it’s just a blue sky now or in the lost valley it’s a moon light and in the Saint Francis volley is a dusty sky ❤❤ and love the snow in the temple
because money, TR4 is the longest game and would require a lot of time. let's hope it comes later. it would be best if we could get 5 and 6 as well, but I strongly doubt that it is not coming
@@The_Str4nger "Games as DLC" makes sense when the main application is free, so you can pick and choose which games to add to it, such as Sega Genesis Classics, Capcom Arcade Stadiums, and Halo remasters. It doesn't make sense to force you to buy the trilogy in order to play the 4th game.
Things I have noticed watching videos posted of the remaster are the quicksand doesn't move anymore which means unless you have a good memory of where it is then you will only realise when you start sinking, also, sometimes the new lighting shows things that were supposed to be hidden by the dark like collectable secrets and also creatures that were supposed to be hidden for jump scares, it also sometimes hides markings on ledges/walls that let you know if they can be climbed or not. Another thing is the water effect, you can't tell if there is water at the bottom of a long narrow drop because it doesn't move and the movement effect that tells you if the water is moving rapidly in a certain direction is not there either meaning you will only know if it's going to force you to go in a certain direction by jumping into it, of course, all these problems can be got around by switching to the original graphics but then if you have to do that then that kinda defeats the purpose of having the remaster. I still pre-ordered it on Steam though I just hope they get around to sorting out the issues.
I can’t wait to use the Catsuit (TR3) as her suit of choice in the Venice Levels in TR2 & The Antarctica Suit (TR3) as her suit choice in the Tibet Levels 😊. Also, it brings me joy that we finally get to see the items she picks up & retrieves in TR3 because boy it was a PAIN to see her pick up the item & it wouldn’t display it on Screen.
That Subtitles example "with the Tommy Gun on my keyring?" 😍. I'm 33 and Tomb Raider 2 was my first game. FOR 20 YEARS I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT GUY SAID UNTIL NOW!
They are still a thing in the TR3 portion of the remaster from what I saw from someone showing off the jungle level a day or two ago, still functions as a consumable item as well.
The annoying thing is hitting a wall and falling to your death, because back in the day there were no internet guides and just gaming magazines to walkthrough at the cost of 20 dollars or more depending on where you buying from
Another feature you forgot to mention is a higher polygonal count specifically for Lara. She no longer looks blocky with a pointy bust but rather more accurate to how she looks in promo material of the time or the cover art of the games.

I’m so happy they have modern controls now. I grew up with Tomb Raider, but tried tank controls a bit ago and couldn’t do it. Now I can relive this with a more comfortable control scheme!!
It looks slightly jank for a modern "remaster", BUT I can't believe how authentic it feels. It's refreshing to see a remaster that isn't so arrogant as to "modernize" all the things that make these games what they are.
Between this and Nightdive, we're finally getting games that look like our unrealistic expectations of 3 decades ago, instead of our unrealistic expectations of today.
OMG THEY DID A REMASTER OF THE CUTSCENES TOO !!! It was the thing that scared me the most, having the old graphics in cutscenes. But now this is soooo good !! Can't wait ❤
The in-game cutscenes run in real-time in the engine, so a graphical upgrade to the engine will affect them as well. You will be able to switch between old and new graphics.

Finally, subtitles. I can't understand anything when music is playing at the same time (even in my native language) + accents make it even harder to understand
The action indicator is hilariously the one thing that improves Classic TR as a whole XD Many times it wasn't clear with what you could interact and with what you couldn't Or interactable objects were sometimes very hard to see This is actually an issue mostly with TR4 and 5 But I am glad they somewhat acknowledged it in the trilogy

I'm an elderly gamer (42) so played all of the originals and absolutely loved them. Just got the PS5 version of the new game with all 269 trophies! Will be attempting the platinum. Great video :)

I never played these games for more than a few minutes when they were new, but I was interested in trying them out more. I think I’m going to enjoy this release, especially with the updated controls.
I like that they changed what the harpoon gun looks like. The og made it look like a weird supersoaker with it being orange. Wouldn't have been a big deal but she carried a harpoon gun on the back of the tr2 box and all i could think was "why couldnt we get one of those?!"
They really should add the save crystals as an option to allow a harder mode for experienced players. Without it the games are easier than they were 25 years ago
@@mod7930 I was hoping to play TR2 with save crystals as a hard difficulty mode (TR3 style) or extra hard (like TR1). Without crystals it loses a lot of its tension that older games have where if you messed up it actually had a consequence
@@cjshields2007 Me too. TR2 is my favourite of the PS1 Tomb Raiders. However, it does tend to lack a bit of tension due to the "save anywhere" save system when comparing it to TR1 and TR3. Bit disappointed with their removal from the games, tbh.
It is worth noting that the action indicators become especially useful since certain items (keys mostly) are very hard to see in the remaster compared to the original. Probably something to do with them being a more realistic size and no longer a 2D object which always faces the camera.
I’m really excited because this will be my first time playing the originals. Now all I need is a remaster of the original resident evil trilogy and I’ll be set
never played a minute of this game but there were those in the household I was raised with that did.... So I see the huge improvements visually, and I do think that when they remaster and also make a game better that is cool as heck.
I got this on Switch. Great to have a game run at native resolution in handheld mode. Looks pretty good on the OLED Switch. It’s just a bit dark in some areas but thankfully you can turn up the brightness without it affecting the blacks since it is an OLDD and you can switch to classic graphics for a brighter look. I am forcing myself to learn tank controls because everyone say they are better.
These games are incredible I'd play modern controls cause I did play a lot on classic, so I know what it's like. I want to check the new control scheme
I think they did a perfect job with these remastered games like i love that they kept the old geometrical forms and also the graphics which are just a little upgraded not too much it's just perfect. Doesn't feel like a new game but at the same time it'll be so refreshing to me :)
The ps1 hd remasters coming to ps5 will forever be one of the greatest gaming moments imo. Every single one has been absolute fire and a dream come true as someone that grew up on PlayStation 1. These Tomb Raider remasters crushed it. They even added the dlc for shit's sake.
If you enter Photo Mode (L3+R3 in-game on PlayStation) while the classic graphics are on and there are particle effects (blood spatter, water splashes) on-screen, switching to remastered graphics causes a glitch - the particle effects remain classic while all other graphics are remastered. Try it! Doing it the other way around makes them disappear.
These 3 games were what made me a gamer as a kid and made me realize I like girls. So happy for this remaster as this was some of my fondest childhood memories. Great video thank you
The crazy thing about photo mode is that there's no limit to how far away you can get from the character, as long as you don't bump into any solid objects. I've never seen a game that lets you do that before. And i discovered that you can even drop into photo mode at the moment when you hit a switch and the camera jumps to a different place to show you a door opening. Kind of a cheat really, but I'm definitely taking advantage of it!
the photo mode is pretty crazy! It's really nice for scouting. You could also use the camera in photo mode to hit certain triggers, which meant you could use it to trigger secrets and even hit the end level trigger remotely. (in tr3 only). However I believe this part of it was fixed in the latest patch.
The ! Mark helped me So much recently playing in the Cistern level in 1. A rusty key blended entirely with the darkened textures and without that notification I would have been stuck forever looking for it.

The modern controls are pretty bad because you can’t sideways/backwards jump or step backwards on a ledge for a run up. These are pretty important mechanics in the game. Also pretty shattered there’s no Keyboard support. Aside from that killer remaster. Perfect quality of life upgrades and everything else left as it should have been.
Action indicators are vital in Tomb Raider 2 because otherwise you might miss some of the harpoon stashes. The retro graphics feature is also useful for this.
Correction for you: The PS5 photo mode combo is L3+R3, not L1 and R1.

Extremely happy they've added these. The crawling sections in TR3 were painfully slow, they will be much more bearable now.

The added aerial movement from the later games added into 1 already makes things interesting for how quicker it'll make moving around

I think I'm going to keep indicators off. It was part of the original games to make you investigate what would be movable.
They also added the ability to exit elevated crawlspaces in the forward position from TR chronicles.
Any idea why TR 4 hasn't been remastered as well? It’s a classic and probably my favorite episode. ❤😊
Here is hoping the last revelation (IV) and Chronicles (V) are next to get a remaster.
I'm guessing if this does well, they'll release a 2nd remastered trilogy. Who knows, maybe they'll actually fix all the issues with Angel of Darkness!

You will not be able to choose outfits in the levels. It's just in photo mode.
I am going to play tf out of these. I love the feeling of isolation and exploration these games accomplish. And LOVE the look.

I was 8 in 1996 and Tomb Raider was my first PlayStation Game. Such an incredible experience for an 8 year old to play and complete it.
I’m so happy they have modern controls now. I grew up with Tomb Raider, but tried tank controls a bit ago and couldn’t do it. Now I can relive this with a more comfortable control scheme!!
It looks slightly jank for a modern "remaster", BUT I can't believe how authentic it feels. It's refreshing to see a remaster that isn't so arrogant as to "modernize" all the things that make these games what they are.
Between this and Nightdive, we're finally getting games that look like our unrealistic expectations of 3 decades ago, instead of our unrealistic expectations of today.
My favourite is Tomb Raider 4 The Last Revelation

The in-game cutscenes run in real-time in the engine, so a graphical upgrade to the engine will affect them as well. You will be able to switch between old and new graphics.

The video cut scenes are original tho. Slightly upscaled
My dad and uncle were avid fans of tomb raider games fan, this scene here 2:36 scared me when I was 6 years old when I used to watch them playing the games
WOAHH the models, map and the overall look of the game looks so cool! and the new mechanics are great
No save crystals!? My heart isn't ready for this. Too much joy!!! I could cry! That quality of life update alone is so welcome.
Finally, subtitles. I can't understand anything when music is playing at the same time (even in my native language) + accents make it even harder to understand
The action indicator is hilariously the one thing that improves Classic TR as a whole XD
Many times it wasn't clear with what you could interact and with what you couldn't
Or interactable objects were sometimes very hard to see
This is actually an issue mostly with TR4 and 5
But I am glad they somewhat acknowledged it in the trilogy
It does look weird to me but I guess for newbies it is very helpfull.
@@BlackCroft666 Prob because it has layer-priority (aka. it's visable even if Lara or a wall are between the object of interest and the camera) so it makew a bit werid

As someone with a moderate hearing loss and auditory processing disorder, the subtitles are a godsend.
I'm an elderly gamer (42) so played all of the originals and absolutely loved them. Just got the PS5 version of the new game with all 269 trophies! Will be attempting the platinum. Great video :)
Sorry to disappoint you but the ps5 version will not include a platinum only the ps4 version

The games are 25+ years old. A spoiler warning is ridiculous enough, but someone actually complaining about spoilers is just being silly.

@VitZ9 25 years old but the game is still new to a lot of people. I first found the Trex area about 5 years ago and was absolutely thrilled. It wouldn't have been the same if I already knew

I never played these games for more than a few minutes when they were new, but I was interested in trying them out more. I think I’m going to enjoy this release, especially with the updated controls.
I love that they added aesthetic visuals without affecting the core structure of the scenery

I like that they changed what the harpoon gun looks like. The og made it look like a weird supersoaker with it being orange. Wouldn't have been a big deal but she carried a harpoon gun on the back of the tr2 box and all i could think was "why couldnt we get one of those?!"
They really should add the save crystals as an option to allow a harder mode for experienced players. Without it the games are easier than they were 25 years ago
Yeh, poor decision to remove the save crystals from TR1 and TR3, imo. Or at least include them as an option in the settings menu.
@@mod7930 I was hoping to play TR2 with save crystals as a hard difficulty mode (TR3 style) or extra hard (like TR1). Without crystals it loses a lot of its tension that older games have where if you messed up it actually had a consequence
@@cjshields2007 Me too. TR2 is my favourite of the PS1 Tomb Raiders. However, it does tend to lack a bit of tension due to the "save anywhere" save system when comparing it to TR1 and TR3. Bit disappointed with their removal from the games, tbh.

It's how it is with remasters and remakes.
"Must appeal to modern audiences as well" or something like that.
It is worth noting that the action indicators become especially useful since certain items (keys mostly) are very hard to see in the remaster compared to the original. Probably something to do with them being a more realistic size and no longer a 2D object which always faces the camera.
I’m really excited because this will be my first time playing the originals. Now all I need is a remaster of the original resident evil trilogy and I’ll be set

I dont know if its a feature or not but you can use photomode to explore the map, look for secrets, enemy placement and where to go if your stuck.
never played a minute of this game but there were those in the household I was raised with that did.... So I see the huge improvements visually, and I do think that when they remaster and also make a game better that is cool as heck.
I got this on Switch. Great to have a game run at native resolution in handheld mode. Looks pretty good on the OLED Switch. It’s just a bit dark in some areas but thankfully you can turn up the brightness without it affecting the blacks since it is an OLDD and you can switch to classic graphics for a brighter look. I am forcing myself to learn tank controls because everyone say they are better.

I think they did a perfect job with these remastered games like i love that they kept the old geometrical forms and also the graphics which are just a little upgraded not too much it's just perfect. Doesn't feel like a new game but at the same time it'll be so refreshing to me :)

Tomb Raider 2 gives me deep nostalgia because I used to play it a lot when I was a kid in the 90s. It’s good to see these games get a facelift.
The ps1 hd remasters coming to ps5 will forever be one of the greatest gaming moments imo. Every single one has been absolute fire and a dream come true as someone that grew up on PlayStation 1. These Tomb Raider remasters crushed it. They even added the dlc for shit's sake.
If you enter Photo Mode (L3+R3 in-game on PlayStation) while the classic graphics are on and there are particle effects (blood spatter, water splashes) on-screen, switching to remastered graphics causes a glitch - the particle effects remain classic while all other graphics are remastered. Try it!
Doing it the other way around makes them disappear.
These 3 games were what made me a gamer as a kid and made me realize I like girls. So happy for this remaster as this was some of my fondest childhood memories. Great video thank you

Another thing they added: If you hold the grab button (R2 on PC) while running off a platform, Lara will turn around and hold onto the platform

The crazy thing about photo mode is that there's no limit to how far away you can get from the character, as long as you don't bump into any solid objects. I've never seen a game that lets you do that before. And i discovered that you can even drop into photo mode at the moment when you hit a switch and the camera jumps to a different place to show you a door opening. Kind of a cheat really, but I'm definitely taking advantage of it!
the photo mode is pretty crazy! It's really nice for scouting. You could also use the camera in photo mode to hit certain triggers, which meant you could use it to trigger secrets and even hit the end level trigger remotely. (in tr3 only). However I believe this part of it was fixed in the latest patch.

So much recently playing in the Cistern level in 1. A rusty key blended entirely with the darkened textures and without that notification I would have been stuck forever looking for it.

I've never played a Tomb Raider before the 2013 Square Enix one, so I'm excited to see what all the buzz was about.
Never really played the tomb raiders for more then an hour when i was 10, vids very helpful
The modern controls are pretty bad because you can’t sideways/backwards jump or step backwards on a ledge for a run up. These are pretty important mechanics in the game. Also pretty shattered there’s no Keyboard support. Aside from that killer remaster. Perfect quality of life upgrades and everything else left as it should have been.
Action indicators are vital in Tomb Raider 2 because otherwise you might miss some of the harpoon stashes. The retro graphics feature is also useful for this.
I can't wait for this to come out tomorrow!
