Henlo, friends! I didn't really mention how to use DE to control flies in the coop. You can spread it all over the floor but it can get pretty dusty, especially in the drier months. I would put it only in problem or potential problem areas. :-)
I've only been backyard chicken keeping for 3 years. However this has been my worst year for flies!!!!! Nothing has helped. Hello Dalia. I hope that you will give me two chickens as a gift because I am very fond of keeping chickens and the breed of chickens that you have are very rare here so their price is beyond my reach.
Wow!!! Thank you so much. That is gonna be my go to I have tons of Irish Spring in my preps. And I love the smell.I also use it in my garden as shavings. And the bugs don't like it there either😊

I recently started using First Saturday Lime too and I really like it. I used to used a fly trap like you mentioned, but haven't been able to find one recently, so I'm glad you mentioned one. Thank you for the ideas!
Flies... That was my only concern innregards to the questions:"To have or not to have a chicken coop" and now I know! I can totalny handle it with your advices❤❤❤ thank you and greting from Poland❤ (yes, the Polish Chicken is our national brid 😊)
The best stuff that I use is similar to your last product mentioned. One year the flies were insane - I bought a fly trap from Home Depot (I've tried a similar product from their competitor, and it did not work nearly as well). It's just a bag with a small sack of attractant - that has got to be nastiest thing I've ever smelled....never get it on your hands!! You add water to the line and viola - in a day or two, the flies have filled the bag and almost none are in the yard. It is the most amazing product I have ever used. Although I would not let chickens eat the dead flies from that bag - that is disgusting - and they would probably die or we would die from their smell. :-) Can't imagine how horrible their eggs would taste!
I got one of those too and it worked but I couldn't stand the smell. It literally did smell like a rotting animal. Are there any products like this that don't smell?
I have just started a new protocol. I have vinyl on the floor of my chicken coop. I decided not to use any bedding. Instead, I scrape up the poo every morning when I open the coop. I only have 17 right now and it only takes me 2-3 minutes. The results are good so far. Hardly any flies at all.
I’ve used First Saturday Lime for about 2 years now. I mix it in the nesting boxes and it also goes in the dust bath pan. It works great. I also used it with our pigs in their bedding area and on their potty spot. Works great.
we have gotten so much rain....the pathway out of my chicken pen was a FAVORITE spot to poo.....and, the flies were insane when walking to the pen. It was making me crazy. I took First Saturday Lime & sprinkled it allllll down the walkway. Later that day, there were NO flies, holy craziness!
My tap dancing chickens...no more! This is great - but them flies in this video (mad props to your video person) kinda creeped me out...sitting here swatting my computer (kidding) I'm ready for fall (not kidding). Thanks for sharing Dalia!
Now Dalia. My birds love every worm I throw them. I can not give them one worm I have two dominate hens and they are bullies. So I have to give enough worms to offset the fights. If there is plenty there is no bullying.
We the commercial sized flybuster traps/buckets in our horse/goat pasture and they work great! Glad to know we can feed the flies to our chickens, I emptied one the other day before looking to see if this was possible, Have a fully filled one (supposedly holds 2 million flies) and 2 more to refill. Perfect for fly control and chicken food, thanks!
Saw this on pinterest. I take those water filled fly traps with the pop up top. Drill out a hole in 5 gallon bucket lid, glue in the pop up top only, prop it open with a clothes pin. Add 2 gallons of water and lots of extra bait bags and other stinky meat bits. I threw in spoiled tuna 🤷♀️. Sit buckets away from your areas needed, check the water and add more bait later on. I don't know where flys go but their not around my doors or in the house.
Hi girl!! I really enjoy and have learned lots from you so thank you, because of that I think I’m doing a awesome job at chicken keeping 👏👏👏🙄😣😂I love your little dancing alien 👽 ❤
It's interesting that you mentioned lime. I was wondering why I see flies in my coop so rarely. The so-called coop is a basement actually and now I have 28 chicken and 40 chicks (to replace the old generation gradually, the intention is to keep less than 30 adults at any time) in about 25 sq metres (278 sq ft), it is pretty crowded, i.e. now I have exactly 1 individual per 4 sq ft, but usually they have more than double that area. I have 4 slit windows, which I keep open throughout the year except winter when only one is partially open but has an aspirator with a timer that turns it on for 15 minutes every hour... I do not change the bedding too frequently and do not change it ever during and around winter period for about 5-6 months. I do not heat the basement and it gets pretty cold. Whatever relative warmth exists there is due to the rotting bedding... But whenever I could feel the smell of ammonia, I give it a turn, top it up a bit and sprinkle generous handfuls of hydrated lime... It really helps. My chicken never had any breathing problems so far. I mean if you could smell it at 1.5 metres above ground, can you imagine how it would smell at chicken-height? But the lime takes care of it effectively. Perhaps that's why I do not have any flies even in the hot summer. And, lime has another good side to it. Part of it will eventually be eaten by the chicken unintentionally. It will stick to food they will be picking from the ground and it is calcium! I do mix a few spoonfuls of lime in their hydrated food from time to time too and never had any issues with calcium deficiency ever. I do give them crushed egg shells whenever available too, it is better digested and absorbed than lime, it is calcium carbonate as opposed to the lime, which is calcium hydroxide. But still, lime mixed to the feed is good as a calcium source.
Hi Dalia! Have you ever used copper to treat parasites? I have another question...I have 2 roosters that I have to keep apart and have to keep 3 hens away from both...so I have 3 separate pens...it’s exhausting....any ideas...they’ve been around each other since birth but literally teat each other apart when even a chicken wire fence is between them...😢
I'm the same way with bugs especially the cute ones that I don't want them to eat I found potato bugs the other day when I moved one of my flower pots and I scurried them underneath a rock so my chickens wouldn't eat them😂
Scratch and pack has the best herb packets. I know you've shown them on your channel before, but I finally got my first one and I absolutely love it. I use it in their dust bath in their nesting boxes and they eat it as well.
Yep. I know it's not exactly the same but we had Japanese Beetles pretty bad for a couple years before we moved. I was sick of them decimating our plants so we went and bought those infernal bag traps. We followed the directions, including regarding wind, but they attracted so many MORE that not only did ours get eaten up, but our neighbor's trees got obliterated too...and in just a matter of days! I felt *HORRIBLE* and vowed that never again would I waste hard-earned money on that crap again!
I have a chicken question... maybe you have a video on it. I have a chicken who has losts a bunch of feathers. It's not mites/parasites, she's not being bullied... but she just looks like a hot mess. We noticed it starting after we had a pretty brutal storm sweep through the area so we thought it was stress induced (we also noticed some funky eggs from other girls as well after)... but it's been like 6 or 8 weeks and she's not showing signs of regrowing the feathers. She looks like she has alopecia...
Sounds like she was either pushed into a molt from the stress or if she’s a new layer it’s not uncommon for them to go through a more significant spring molt. If she seems fine otherwise I would give it a little more time.
@WelcometoChickenlandia thank you! She is about 18 months old and started laying last summer. I will be patient! She seems otherwise healthy and happy... just bald in places. Haha
trying the deep litter method. I am not sure if I am doing it right. I pick up the poop I see, is there something else to do? I see you are stirring it. Do I filter it out again?
My guess is that it is not safe for bees although I'm not positive about that. As with all similar products I urge people to limit their use to the coop as to have the least effect as possible on other wildlife.
Hello I am new to all this chicken stuff and go down the rabbit hole watching. I have a question, I clean the tray in the bottom of the roost in the coop everyday, I clean with vinegar and water, dry it out, and put lime or DE on the tray.
