    I have to laugh because yesterday I had been working outside and the hens had been free-ranging. Cleaned the hen house, put them back, and went inside.
    Suddenly, I hear a huge commotion!
    All hens were squawking loudly!
    Run outside and I see two golden eagles hunting the fields.
    Once I was out, the hens stopped their squawking and gently clucked.
    I double checked that nothing got in with them. The pen has a wire roof.
    I told them, the eagles can’t get you! You’re safe!
    They were calling for me?!?

    Hi Dahlia. enjoy your videos and content with your honest input. We have two EE that both developed lash eggs about the same time when they were 4 1/2 years old. We got them from the same hatchery at the same time Missy has always had issue of laying an occasional soft shell egg then at 4 1/2 came a few lash eggs. A week or so from that point we saw yolk coming from her vent and knew her egg broke inside. We took her to the vet and she did X-rays to confirm she has the membrane inside still. We were lucky is was towards the end and she was able to flush it out. Knowing Missy’s past on soft shell she talk to us about the suplorean implant to stop egg production. We went that route and in our case the lash eggs stopped. So right or wrong she is on birth control for about a year now and is doing amazing at 5 1/2 years old. Of course we reimplant when she starts squatting. Our other EE Gracie we thought was doing better but the lash eggs come back. We did the implant on her but she was not as fortunate and we lost her last year. She was my wife’s dearest and as you know it is very difficult. We to this day kick ourselves saying why didn’t we just implant both at the same time. Would that have made a difference 🤷‍♂️. Was Missy just lucky 🤷‍♂️. We feel our diet for our girls is good. We keep the coop clean. It has sand floor and wife cleans daily. Sorry for the long comment but just wanted to share our experience.

    OMG, this is my first time raising chickens, 4 barred rocks. I got them in Feb '24. They started laying late july and all at the start of Aug. Small eggs, most days 4 eggs, and a couple of days 3. All looks fine, nice shells. Supplemented oyster shells at will, and their crushed shells mixed in feed. Here in central TX we just went through temps over 100 for several weeks. Their coop and run is shaded and has a shade cover over it. I put a fan, wet the run, put ice in their waters and their foot bath. On the hottest couple of days - 110-112 I even put ice cubes on the wet ground when they were panting a lot. That worked to cool them down. During all of this their egg production was steady as above. Now, TODAY, I checked the box and there was one egg at 11:30 and this was unusual as there are most days at least one more, so I checked the coop and I saw an egg that looked wet (it was intact but very soft and had a spot about nickel size hard shell that was rough) and then not but a couple of inches from it one that was open with a very soft translucent "shell".
    Question can a hen lay 2 such eggs when they lay? Like one didn't pass as usual and then the next day it does with another one.? I didn't see the open one yesterday, could have missed it, but only got 3. I do not know if it was from yesterday or if from one hen or there are two laying such. They look and act fine, eating and drinking, begging for treats, scratching and pecking when they free range in the morning. I am just freaked out because they just are getting over from foul pox. Jezzee, what next?? Should I be concerned? Edit to add: I got 3 good eggs today and the soft shell one. I identified at least one of the hens who laid a good egg.

    We had a very sick chicken 6 weeks ago. She is a 2 year old Isa Brown, we named Bossy, that was already separated from the others because she is a bully. I was pretty sure it was salpingitis. She was bloated and just sat around with her eyes half-closed. She laid a lash egg so that pretty much confirmed it and we thought she was going to die. We didn't have access to antibiotics so we gave her a dropper full of colloidial silver as a last ditch effort. Later that afternoon she appeared to be better so we continued giving this to her for several days along with probiotics sprinkled in her water. About a week later she started laying perfect looking eggs every single day! I have just been cooking them and feeding them to the dog as I'm not sure if they are safe for us to eat. She appears totally back to normal and is her old sassy self again. She wasn't eating at the time so we had to use a dropper to carefully give her the colloidal silver at first. When she started eating again, we put the silver on little pieces of bread. Once a lash egg is laid, I read that they don't live very long and probably won't lay any more eggs, but she seems fine now.

    • @thisorthat7626
      @thisorthat7626 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My older hens will lay a lash egg now and then. I give them more protein and calcium and it seems to fix the eggs right up. They have laid lash eggs every once in a while over the past 2 years so I think the idea that they won't live long is false. Thanks for the tip on colloidal silver on bread. Glad Bossy is better!

    I feed fermented grower feed to all my chickens, no matter their age. Then I have oyster shell on the side. They also get all the yard waste and kitchen scraps. And their egg shells back. And they get out in the yard at least three days a week to eat bugs, etc. So I think they have a pretty very diet. I have gotten a few weird eggs over the years, but nothing too major. My favorite one was a perfectly shape egg, but it was forest green. I guess that chicken used all the color up on one egg.

    My alpha hen would only lay soft, shelled eggs for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. I thought maybe scaly leg mites. She was suffering from that. My mobile chicken vet, I’m so lucky to have him, examined her and said she is lacking calcium. As the alpha, she’s so busy defending her role that she doesn’t eat as much as everyone else so I need to put eggshells in their food every day to boost her intake. She started to lay normally almost instantly! Now I add the eggshells every other day. I sprinkle a little into their fermented feed. The really horrible thing about the soft shelled eggs is that she is a nest sleeper, refuses to roost, so she lays in the egg mess all night long & her butt was always eggy. 🥴

She has done this for two years now. Otherwise she looks happy and healthy. We have oyster shells out and feed healthy foods. She is only one of 3 in the small flock so no stress. They certainly vary in size…some look very large and some just medium size…some more brown and some more pale..

    Good Morning... i am up to 7 hens with 2 of the omelet coops. One large, one small. Considering going to a home built coop for all in one. Which do you like better?

    I have 2 Rhode Island Red Freedom Ranger pullets that are 26 and 28 weeks old. The older one has been laying for 6 weeks and has laid every day but once and then laid a double yolker the next egg. The younger one has been laying for 4 weeks and lays about 50% double yolkers but in the last 3 weeks has laid 2 eggs per day about 5 times. One will be either shell less, soft shelled or only with the white in it followed by a hard shelled egg with mostly yolk in it. Counting the weird and good eggs she has laid about 30 or more eggs. I've never seen or heard of anything like it. They eat a good quality layer feed and have oyster shell and vitamin water with cacium, D3, E, and some iron in it. I started the vitamins after the first couple of mishaps. Is she ever going to lay just 1 hard shelled egg a day with no weird eggs? Today she laid 2 in 2 hours, the first hard shelled, the 2nd was a perfect shell less egg of normal size

    Hi Dhalia. Today my kids and I found one of our hens (our only silkie) dead in our backyard. No visible signs of injury... possibly a broken neck? I've noticed over the last week that she has been completely alone 100% of the time back there. My bigger hens as well as the hens she grew up alongside had all seemed to have exiled her. Do you think my chickens may have killed her? Could she have died due to being kicked out of the group? I just think it's so sad and strange. She was perfectly happy and healthy yesterday.

    Is there any hope for a rooster to stop being aggressive towards people or the hens? The 2 roosters will be a year in June.

      @dms8585 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The roosters are in different flocks, but they did come from the same hatchery.

      In my experience, I had to repeatedly hold the rooster down around the neck and shoulder area every time they would come at me, just as a dominant rooster would do to a smaller rooster or a hen. (just to show him I am the alpha "chicken".) It worked after a few weeks. Good luck with aggressiveness towards the hens though, I haven't figured that one out yet. 😂

      @tabp8448 We did try holding one down like you said. Maybe we haven't done it enough times. We were thinking of switching the roosters in the hopes that it will throw them off. Otherwise, it will have to be the soup pot.

    Hello, I have an issue, and I dont know what to do. I have 1 rooster and 7 hens. Everything was going well, birds are 2 years old. But one of the hens has started laying eggs without shell or membrane. I dont know which hen it is, its just a loose egg in the nesting box. They have plenty of oyster shell grit, and are fed Flock Raiser. Any ideas or suggestions? Please…

    I have a chicken that I can’t fix the prolapse vent, what should I do?

    • @stephanyandres5968
      @stephanyandres5968 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can gently clean and attempt to smooth the vent tissue back inside her. Apply hemorrhoid cream to your gloved fingers to help press the tissue back in. It will reduce swelling and help with the tissue temporarily.
      Ideally the best thing is to get her to an avian vet that will care for a chicken.
      A mild Epsom salt bath will help too. She should be moved from the flock to heal if at all possible to avoid being picked st by the others....

    Chickens are high maintenance, it seems. My goodness. I have your book and I follow a lot of good chicken people. I’m considering getting chickens, but it seems like they are going to cost a fortune. I thought 4 dogs were expensive! Need to do a cost comparison, before I commit to this.

    I have to ask where are you located that your eggs pretty much stop completely. In the winter time. I live in eastern North Carolina and it got down to 17° this year and in the month of January and February I had more eggs than I have ever had in my entire life. More than I’m getting now in the spring where it hit 90 today. I was mixing food from Tractor Supply together to make my own feed and using well what I call the basics, corn scratch, grains, layer, feed, black oil sunflower seeds, a diatomaceous earth & oyster shells & crushed eggshells 🤷🏻‍♂️ I mean nothing out of the ordinary. I walked outside every morning at daylight let my chickens out feed them sing to them when they sing to me go back in house eat breakfast enjoy my coffee 🤷🏻‍♂️ no artificial light no heat nothing. And no, I don’t have any cold, hardy breeds or anything I have roughly 8 red Highlander hens and the rest are bearded & non1bearded crested Polish breeds. And for some reason, literally everyone that I talked to online and in person who had chickens or knew someone with chickens I was getting more eggs and they were even people with three times as many chickens I don’tunderstand it.

    Food grade diatomaceous earth added to the food cleans up poopy eggs in 24 hours. It’s never failed.
