I wanted to share something my vet shared with me. One of our girls has been egg bound twice with a soft eggs. When the eggs are soft it can be very difficult to push them out, and they can break leading to infection. The vet recommended warming some saline then inserting it into her vent. You are basically flushing their vent with the saline using a syringe or empty enema. She passed the egg within a few hours.
Hmmm... when one of my girls was eggbound, I sat her in warm water with plain Epsom salt for about 20 minutes. She passed the egg shortly after, and has been fine ever since. I do wonder if it could possibly be that they're deficient in some type of salt in their body. #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm
Thank you, great info again. Once my chicken was acting uncomfortable and making noice. I thought she might be eggbound. So I picked her up and gently massaged her belly toward the back. Suddenly an egg popped out, right into my hand. It was the most fresh egg I ever had.
Thank you for another relatable video. I love that you have recommendations for those who can't afford a vet bill! This is the most valuable kind of content.
Glad I watched this! We lost a sweet hen yesterday. Very sad cause we never knew what was wrong with her. Had her in the house, doing everything we knew how to and she quietly went in her sleep. Felt so terrible that we didn't know what was wrong. She did have a very good life with us though and that is comforting!
Thank you for being not only extremely knowledgeable, but also completely empathetic and truly caring of people as well as poultry. Love your videos and your outlook.
You beat me to it, I was going to say the same. I am 50 and she looks ten years younger than me. It must be the chickens! She gets peace, joy, and a youthful glow from them! Good thing I finally got some 🐥😁💕
The vets where I live would laugh me right off the phone should I call them about a chicken (I have before, that’s why I know this). They also told me (probably to dissuade me), that they would charge me for an “exotic” animal. They up the prices for exotic animals. Needless to say, I try my best. I have one chicken left, and I love her to pieces! Thank you for your knowledge… my neighbor next door told me about egg binding when I first got my chickens, and said it’s a death sentence. I don’t care…I’ll do what I have to do for my chickens. My baby girl is old and no longer lays. She just enjoys being with us and enjoying her life!
Thank you! This is so helpful. Caring for my egg bound hen today after the vet confirmed she is egg bound. She’s had 4 warm baths now and it helps her, she loves it, but no egg laid yet. Praying she lays it tomorrow morning instead of another vet trip for a relaxant injection.
I've been raising birds for 30+ years and had my first egg bound hen this year. I gave her castor oil at both ends, I also worked to dialate the vent and injected iodine for infection and soaked her for an hr. It's been a week and now she's fine.
Ohmygosh, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! It's so fun to listen to you AND your content is also really helpful. I love how your passion for chickens is helping the rest of us. God bless you! Looking forward to watching more of your videos
My hen, Jefa was egg bound one time! (And yes, she was the boss 😅.) I gave her a warm Epson salt bath and then let her dry off by the warm wood stove. She passed the soft shell egg, and we were SO relieved!! I caught on that Jefa was in distress when I went to lock up the girls for the night and noticed Jefa was barring down and her vent was kind of pulsing, for lack of a better word. Anyways, knowing your chickens is key ❤. It was my first experience with an egg bound hen but I was able to spot it and help her in time. I then put her on the REST method until she was able to lay a full formed egg with no issues before I put her back with her flock.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH we have had 4 egg bound and did a epsom salt bath and i ended up having to use gloves and vaseline to relieve her of the egg and i hated it so much but i saved her. another just had the epsom salt and was fine the next day with an egg. but i have lost 2 because the egg was in the ovary itself and it ruptured the ovary on both silkies. vet says there was nothing we could do. i will add this to my first aid for chickens collection for the future!
I have a hen that's been so sleepy an today I picked her up an she tryed to push out a egg so I soaked her in Epson salts an put her back in an empty coup. She is not walking wierd but just listless. Prayn for her to pass it after she tryed so hard. Thank you
Well she is still with us living with a blind hen in my front garden that also was affected last year. She dosent walk well but is getting stronger, no eggs but the will stoll. I give them grubs an clorine dioxide to kill any thing else. My hens got merks years ago an it dosent present offin but it still does. It don't stop them from hatching babies but it will never fully be gone. That's why coop cleaning an not going in your yard after going in anyone's else's. Or buying older hens. That's what I did from overeasy egg ranch they were sneezing the lady said it was just the heat. Well killed the majority of 45 birds. Hard long lesson that keeps on giving. Thanks for asking. Blessings
My favorite hen (and eggs) is my White Rhode Island Red. I really want to get some RIR, but I have no more room. I need to move! (so my chickens can have more space)😂
Juanaria, one of our "gallinas criollas" has been eggbound twice. A warm bath with epsom salts and lavender essential oil, a boiled egg with calcium carbonate and Pulsatilla 30C. Works like a charm! Have done it once with a Sebright too.
I’ve done something very similar but I crush the eggshell with the egg to feed them, then Espom salt bath and place them in a quiet spot. This has worked every time and some of the girls I have done this with are still kicking and it’s been at least 4+ years.
Thank you so so much for this helpful info Madam President 😊 I have 3 Isa Browns and they’ve each experienced this once in the past year. Was the same every time, the hen would stand in the corner of the coop, feathers puffed up and could see she was straining. Thankfully they all were able to pass their egg. Two of my girls, after laying the egg, laid another that was soft shelled about an hour later. Scared the crap outta me! Poor girls were exhausted but back to normal the next day. Praying it doesn’t happen again but I will definitely try these methods if it does. Can’t thank you enough Dahlia, you rock! ❤
I have a hyline brown (Miss Cluck) that often lays a "separated egg", meaning the yolk is layed with no shell, and the shell is by itself, either a rubbery balloon or a mass of crinkled hard shell. I usually REST her when it happens, but a few times a epsom salts bath was required. She also has layed HUGE double yolkers! ❤
I have a brown leghorn that is similar. When she was younger, she laid almost every other day, but almost always a double yolker. She's older now, and still lays a very large single yolk egg every few days. I'm sure that has been hard on her body though.
I just dealt with two cases. One was soft shelled, that was broken inside of her. Very good natural antibio is coated silver, just one drop is as powerful as a whole bottle of colloidal silver, and yet very gentle. I alternated it internally with oregano extract oil (not essential oil!) in a scrambled egg with calcium, epsom salt bath with lavender, and olive oil lubricant inside of oviduct, and then I was able to pull it out. It was all squished broken, with sharp edges, but luckily mostly one piece. It had scraped her insides while it was inside her, but I sprayed her vent, with a very strong solution of coated silver, and she was almost reborn the next day. I highly suggest the coated silver, it has helped me with my birds so much! Just one drop for internal use and thats it!
My champion barred rock hen got egg bound about fifteen years ago. My vet got her cleaned out without surgery, and then told me I actually fed her (and her sisters) too well. He said it was obvious due to her feather and skin condition. I was shocked that there was such a possibility, but he was adamant that I cut back on the vitamins and proteins to just slightly above the standard for laying chickens. The hens were not happy to lose their hot morning mash made of fermented feed pearls, vitamin powder, fly larva, grains, olive oil, and minerals, but they adjusted and learned quickly that when they came into the garage and their cages at night I'd make up for it. There was no loss of feather or body condition, either. The warm baths work so well just for general health and egg laying, too. All my girls since have come to love their spa days. My roo - not so much but what can you do?
I experienced this very early. My first flock, the first girl that laid had this happen when she was trying to lay her third egg ever. It had no shell. Thankfully I had watched enough videos and read enough books and articles that I was pretty sure I recognized what was happening, and we got it taken care of.
When this happened, she just stood off in the corner of the yard by herself. I noticed it and decided to keep an eye on her. 2 hours later she was still just standing there. That's when I brought her inside and started getting it sorted.
I'm in Wyoming. You call a vet for a chicken here... Just had this happen today. Went to tractor supply- two employees with one of them being a cashier, the second employee helping the first. Nine other customers. Forget it. Went to Murdochs, an employee there knew EXACTLY what to do: Warm Epsom salt baths, repeat every little while. (Pookie-Lynne was immediately comforted, she quit panting.) Give Tums internally- I crushed one into a little applesauce, along with half a chewable baby aspirin. Loaded a needle-less syringe and down the hatch. Pookie-Lynne is a crossbeak hen, so she's used to getting "treats down the hatch" 😂. Linda also recommended Preparation H for the vent, in the event there is inflammation. Wash, rinse, repeat. Pookie-Lynne's issue resolved about 20 minutes ago, she's back up and at it, whatever "it" is.
I'm so happy that Mrs. Puff is ok. I've had to deal with that before and it is no fun at all. Luckily for me the epsom salt bath worked on one hen. Oil helped me get a broken softshell out of another hen's bum. The poor thing was straining so hard. When I finally got it out, it smelled horrible; so she got some mild antibiotics and is doing fine now.
You are adorable and I just love your educational videos on backyard chickens. Girl, tell me where you get your eyeglasses-you have so many cute ones and I can never find retro eyeglasses at the store. Please!

As much as it hurts me to say it , I can’t afford to goto the dentist to get the holes in my teeth fixed . There’s no way I could afford to pay for a chicken X-ray An Overnight stay and injections . I will definitely be trying your other recommendations , thank you for sharing your experience . 👣🦘🫂
You are definitely not alone. That's why i always make a point to say whatever you can afford is okay and no matter what you are doing a good thing by keeping chickens!
I was wondering if a clean syringe with coconut oil, or olive oil can be injected slowly into her vent to help the egg come out? In the past, I gave one of my hens the warm epsom salt bath, and a portion of one of my own calcium tablets(that was about 7 years ago, and she is 8 years old now) She laid her egg that same afternoon, but I have wondered "what if that doesn't work?"
Idk about putting it into the vent because i would be worried about causing infection, but if your choice is do that or lose the chicken, I would say to try it!
My Salmon Faverolle was egg bound on her first egg. They couldnt get us in so we had to figure it out. The last six hours was the worst. I googled everything, I felt like a midwife but I was NOT going to let my girl die. We went at it until 2 in the morning just two days ago. She got to the point she couldnt stand anymore. But thankfully we got that egg, I told her no more egg laying although I am not certain that is our choice or hers. The day after she couldnt walk, today she is standing a bit. Hopefully its all uphilll after this.
Thanks Dahlia for the info. Unfortuantly I don't have a vet in my area or the next town over. So I am on my own. But I have had one that acted strangely at 8 mths old. Just stood there and wouldn't move. My rooster and other chickens were picking on her. So I took her in for 3 hours in a quiet area. Gave her a warm epsom salt bath soak for 20 mins. Fried her an egg and gave her plenty of water. After 3 hours she seemed more perky. I returned her to the flock and from that point on she seemed fine and the other chickens were no longer bothering her. Not sure what was wrong but she did lay an egg later.
You might also consider homeopathic pulsatilla 3X (use something similar if you have it) Silicea/Silica 6C (another cell salt), or Nux Vomica. You can also give them a pinch of ginger in 1 tsp. castor oil.
I am frustrated with a hen who has been broody and not laying for over a month!! She’s hogging the egg box and frustrating the other hens!!! I got lots of eggs all winter and am now down to 2 eggs a day from 4 hens!! They still get the best foods and supplements!!
This is my chicken first time laying eggs, and my black Maran has a small hole in the egg. (not all the time) When I crack the egg, it still has the skin/covering over the hole on the inside of the egg. Please advise
I have 7 chickens in a tractor that the other chickens dont associate with. How do i get them incorporated into my coop so i can lock them in for protection. Thanks
Will they still be pooping if theyre eggbound? Did your duck still have droppings? Im suspecting egg bound in my hen but shes still poping normal and cecal poops, so it has me second guessing.
The bioplasma can be given anytime you feel like your chickens need a "boost." Some people just throw them on the floor and the chickens gobble them up! If there's any laying issues or if they've just started laying after a break, it's great to give it to them. Also during and after times of illness or stress. ❤️ They are very safe!
Hi, I just found your channel and I have a question, I have 7 hens and 1 rooster. For the last 5+ days, we have only been getting 1 egg. I haven't noticed any of the symptoms that you talked about but I was just wondering/wanting your opinion if this could be causing the others to not be laying right now? I know that they have been stressed lately because of the rooster. Several of them had their backs completely devoid of all of their feathers, a couple of them are starting to get their feathers back but another couple of them still don't have all of their feathers yet.(I hope that makes sense). Should I try giving them each a spa day in Epsom salt or should I try other options? Like I said I haven't noticed any of the symptoms that you mentioned,or do you think that it could be something else that I need to try for them. My flock are all Black Australorps and up until last week, we were getting 6-7 eggs per day. I also wanted to say that we live in the mtns of VA. TIA for any information that you can give to me.
You can buy or make a saddle for the hens that protects them from injury done by the rooster. Google it. It's like an apron that they wear on their back.
My hen had a broken soft shell that worked itself out with help from me and an epsom salt bath. I’m concerned she has yolk in her. She’s acting quiet and sort of uncomfortable. Preening. Any advice as to next step?
My hen is almost 6 years and has been laying shelless eggs about 3 times in the last 2 months and has quit laying pretty much completely. Should i supplement with calcium or just let her finally not lay? Thank you
I need help please. I have 9 full size hens and we got four new chicks this year. For some reason we lost three of the chicks over the last month I am down to one.. I don’t know what to do with my last baby chick she is only 3 months old too small to be out with my hens. Any suggestions please
Good day Dahlia, I am wondering if you could help me with keeping my chickens in a pen apposed to free range! They have free ranged basically with no problems from predators in four years. I probably only lost three birds hawk or fox. I recently got a rooster because I had a broody hen. Pretty much right off the bat I’ve lost five chickens from a fox and I believe two from a hawk. I live in the woods. I’m well aware of predators. The pen goes into the woods. It is about 40‘ x 40‘ with the coupe within. I have been keeping them in most of the day and to me they do not seem very happy. It’s more shady than son no grass I have straw down, there’s things for them to roost on. I tried to put things in for entertainment. I let them out days ago about 6:30 PM and yes, I lost another hand no feathers no sound I figure Hawk! I have my broody in the coop on eggs right now. The chicken house is 8‘ x 8‘ and 8 foot tall it weighs a ton. I’m trying to figure out how to get more sunlight and of course some grass for them. I know this is Long, if you could guide or have any ideas, please share! I love letting them out, but I hate losing them 😢 I actually thought it was because of the rooster letting everyone know they’re here ! I saved the rooster from being stew. He is only eight or nine months old and the owner had too many! You can tell he’s very sad about the loss of the birds that he knew was here and gone!💔🙏 I would appreciate any help! I’ve been a chicken mama for seven years and just have not had this much trouble with loss 💔😭 thank you 🙏 PS, I have plenty of ground in the backyard that is totally in the sun., Thoughts of moving the chicken house?
My chicken is egg boind right now . I have done the water soaking. I can feel the egg and it feels pretty big. She has been loke this for 3 days. I am so worried that is going to die.

This is the most helpful information, I'll be sure to share this with everyone if they have issues like this. Thank you president of chicken landia
I so appreciate your informative videos. You’re so helpful! Blessing’s to you and yours ❤❤❤.
Thankyou for your information
Thank you so much for this video, I believe I just lost one of my chickens to being egg bound
I was wondering if a clean syringe with coconut oil, or olive oil can be injected slowly into her vent to help the egg come out?
In the past, I gave one of my hens the warm epsom salt bath, and a portion of one of my own calcium tablets(that was about 7 years ago, and she is 8 years old now)
She laid her egg that same afternoon, but I have wondered "what if that doesn't work?"
Idk about putting it into the vent because i would be worried about causing infection, but if your choice is do that or lose the chicken, I would say to try it!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia It was something I have wondered for a long time, but I like all of your advice better! Thank you!
One of my hens just layed her 2nd egg weight 10 ounces
Yepper and i know how she feels when i'm constipated! lol
You might also consider homeopathic pulsatilla 3X (use something similar if you have it) Silicea/Silica 6C (another cell salt), or Nux Vomica. You can also give them a pinch of ginger in 1 tsp. castor oil.
Good tip!
I am frustrated with a hen who has been broody and not laying for over a month!!
She’s hogging the egg box and frustrating the other hens!!!
I got lots of eggs all winter and am now down to 2 eggs a day from 4 hens!!
They still get the best foods and supplements!!
None of these symptoms. I have to force her out of the egg box and she will go forage but then run back! She gathers others’ eggs beneath her!!
Poor Mrs. Puff . I hope that does not happen in my lottle flock. 🐝♥️
I read somewhere that Epsom salt baths can help them pretty quickly
If people wouldnt feed chickens treats it wouldnt happen i grew up in the country and we had chickens never once saw that happen
At times when he hens are obviously stressed from too much attention from the rooster : bare backs , it is time to separate him from the flock .
This is my chicken first time laying eggs, and my black Maran has a small hole in the egg. (not all the time) When I crack the egg, it still has the skin/covering over the hole on the inside of the egg. Please advise
I love ping and pong I have two named miny and moe
I have 7 chickens in a tractor that the other chickens dont associate with. How do i get them incorporated into my coop so i can lock them in for protection. Thanks
next time try pulsatilla it works. read the poultry doctor its a very old homeopathic chicken book.
So much like humans. It's fascinating!
Seeing how high chickens can jump, my fence is a joke.
Will they still be pooping if theyre eggbound? Did your duck still have droppings? Im suspecting egg bound in my hen but shes still poping normal and cecal poops, so it has me second guessing.
Did she get a treat afterwards?
Dalia can the Bioplasma Cell Salts Tablets be used in a preventative way? Just wondering if they would ward of any potential problems. 🤔
Awesome! Thanks so much! This will alleviate some worry. I worry about my girls all the time. 😬
I would LOVE to hear more about homeopathic remedies for chickens.
My hen had a broken soft shell that worked itself out with help from me and an epsom salt bath. I’m concerned she has yolk in her. She’s acting quiet and sort of uncomfortable. Preening. Any advice as to next step?
I’ve been debating between chickens and ducks for so long. It seems that chickens tend to have so many health issues compared to ducks.
What type of chicken is the small black one?
My hen is almost 6 years and has been laying shelless eggs about 3 times in the last 2 months and has quit laying pretty much completely. Should i supplement with calcium or just let her finally not lay? Thank you
They must have had calcium supplement provided 24 hours a day in a separate bowl
I need help please. I have 9 full size hens and we got four new chicks this year. For some reason we lost three of the chicks over the last month I am down to one.. I don’t know what to do with my last baby chick she is only 3 months old too small to be out with my hens. Any suggestions please
Why can’t we break the egg a pull it out with twizzers? Or,put vasaline around vent and slide it out? Thank you.
❤❤❤

And was that vet bill.
I love letting them out, but I hate losing them 😢
I actually thought it was because of the rooster letting everyone know they’re here ! I saved the rooster from being stew. He is only eight or nine months old and the owner had too many! You can tell he’s very sad about the loss of the birds that he knew was here and gone!💔🙏
I would appreciate any help! I’ve been a chicken mama for seven years and just have not had this much trouble with loss 💔😭 thank you 🙏
PS, I have plenty of ground in the backyard that is totally in the sun., Thoughts of moving the chicken house?
My chicken is egg boind right now . I have done the water soaking. I can feel the egg and it feels pretty big. She has been loke this for 3 days. I am so worried that is going to die.
