The so-called "LA Times" lead is, actually the remains of the old pre 1939 UP passenger mainline into LA's old Grand Central Station, shared with SP, which was located on Alameda Street, between 4th and 6th Street, prior to the LA Union Station opening in 1939. This lead also served the UP's old terminal warehouse, at Alameda and Olympic, and the 8th Street team tracks, where it connected with the SP at Alameda Street.
Yep, Smoot the root! J yard was always one of those places it was fun to work. The "Street", before, the Alameda corridor, was a switching paradise. At one time up to five jobs would work the "Street", and others, night and evening only allowed on Alameda, would work Alameda north of J yard. The "rat hole" and "violet alley" were still active, with mazes of spurs winding between the buildings deep into the old industrial heart of LA. This time of year, back in the 70's and early 80's, 8th Street was once LA's Christmas tree wholesale market, with up to ten boxcars of Christmas trees at a time spotted at the 8th Street team track for unloading. Working folks with their kids, buying wholesale fresh off the train Christmas trees on December evenings, was a special seasonal event for some of these folks back then.
Wow! Trains still use the track that goes upwards towards the old LA Times building? I thought it was not possible with all the potential trash along the line post Washington.
Great Video!!! Is that a Chopper in the background at around 27 minutes? Right above the letter W in the big graffitti tag NWO in the background? I think it is...neat
Watching ur videos has given me some really good ideas for my ho scale layout

This is what keeps me watching on TH-cam. I live right by the BNSF racetrack but rarely get to watch switch action.
i am glad you found this video interesting, thanks for watching !
Wow, southern California is so beautiful! Just the way I remember it!
so Union Pacific no longer paints their engines, they let the locals do it.
Excellent video my Friends 😊
Great video
That's some real ghetto loco
Gritty, gritty….railroad city.🌆
I bet it was a nightmare getting to those locations since I've LA's traffic is horrible.
Was Conductor for a spell about 20 years ago. Transition to remotes, rather than live Engineer became a real drag.
Only a handful of RCL jobs left these days, none which use the mainline. Think they want to change them all back to standard
Great video, and colorful!! Always interesting to watch the locals at work
I use to work that job
So, did I.
Hope it was a lot nicer back then! Kinda scary down there now
The Virlon Smoot yard.

Only 4 industries left from J Yard these days, SA, the two in the rathole south of the yard, and the last City Fibers on the LA sub sadly.
Former Southern Pacific, cotton belt gp60.

trains seldom use it, and they have to clear it off the rails from time to time
Train stunts in reverse.
can someone tell me why there is so much trash on the ground it make a perfect video looks so sad
From the looks of it, and I am not judging, this isn't a great part of town.
Here in LA trash is in most public places
What a silly face they made
I wonder how they got that face?
@june4_bug3 graffiti
I bet you the crew gets a kick out of it

Yes there is a big LA police station about a mile or so north of this bridge on the River
