Hard Working Alcos, The Birthplace of G&W, and Letchworth: The BEST of Rochester, NY!

- It's June 9, 2024, and I'm heading to Western New York for three days of chasing Alcos and any other trains I can find. After catching an SD40 leading NS train H52, I get my proper start on June 10, catching NS 309 at Portageville before heading to the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad. After an excellent northbound chase of the LAL road train, I catch three different Rochester Southern (G&W) trains including GNWR 125, the official heritage unit. I also catch CSX B606 with CSXT 1836 "RF&P" half-heritage unit trailing.
Shoutout to my buddies @joelbowman7152, Cooper G, and @theanswerone863 /echucker who stopped by Brooks to say hi.

Great video! I love that Orange and Yellow G&W paint! Keep em coming!
Excellent video, I really enjoyed it. Happy Holydays from Puerto Rico.
That was a FAST 40 minutes Harrison! Well done!
It was thrill to see that new N-S Portageville Bridge AND that VERY scenic gorge under it. As I understand it N-S offered the old 19th Century Erie bridge at the site to the state of New York as a component of a hiking trail (it could have handled hikers easily) but the state turned them down. Too bad.
Now those LA&L Alcos are a sight to gladden an Alco-holics heart, they look very well maintained and clean enough to eat off of!
You know, I'm glad to see CSX did that "Half-Heritage" RF&P unit but it's obvious the top brass around at the time CSX purchased the RF&P isn't around anymore. Well it HAS been over 30 years now but I remember when it happened, CSX had to jump though a mile of hoops to make it happen, the state of Virginia drove a hard bargain and when the deal was complete CSX couldn't get rid of the RF&P markings fast enough! Quite a contrast to all the CSX predecessor 'roads who's markings were still pretty evident on a lot of locomotives.
Thanks for posting!
@@wayneantoniazzi2706 Thanks Wayne! Interesting to hear that about the Portageville bridge.
Thank you for sharing your Western New York railfan adventures. Another great looking video. I’m glad you had dry weather.
Nice stuff! The Rochester area has some real jewels.
You don't really appreciate the size of the Poetageville Bridge until you see a train on it.
@@JohnCamerota-jg6wt It’s truly spectacular!
I really should proofread better before I post. "Peotageville" vs. Portageville. @@NorthCountryTrains
Some great footage here Harrison! Territory I've never visited, guess I'll have to put it on my bucket list.
I did not know about the Industry Museum, have to visit next summer. Great video, watching for Day 2.
Fun fact: I worked in that said grain elevator you mentioned in 18:37 years ago. It was for semolina, the type of grain Barilla there in Avon would use to mix their pasta. I always enjoyed watching the LAL switching action there. I just wish I had cared a little more about trains back then as I do now 😆 great work!
@@TheWanderingRailfans thanks for the info!
Excellent and enjoyable video!🚂🚂🚂
Very nice Harrison!
Good to see ya at Brooks Yard! Hope you come down to visit our area again sometime soon! Btw, I’ve been learning the NS Southern Tier line if you end up chasing NS in the future.
@@theanswerone863 It was nice to have some company while watching trains! I’ll be back sometime!
Query; was that C420,LA&L 420,ex-Long Island?? Beautifully kept up,and a sight for sore eyes! Knew them on the LI! Thank you 😇 😊!
I wish I could drive and see Alco's (Andy in Letchworth UK).
@@andyknott8148 Take a trip here! It’s worth it!
Alco 420 hi nose diesels used on long island rr in 1960 thru 1980😊
🔥
9:04 wow something you don’t see very often a high Hood Alco I’m wondering what Alco class model that is I know for a fact that is not an RS11 which is the most common of high Hood Alcos
@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan as stated in the caption on screen it’s a C420
@ wow that’s pretty cool
What's with the hate on CSX's heritage units? They're better than not having any at all right? So what's the point? prefer NS & UP over this different style? Jesus...."half-heritage, incomplete heritage, etc"....GROW UP!
@@BattleshipOrion Where did “hate” come from? I don’t recall saying I hate or even dislike CSXT 1836. Only half of the locomotive has heritage paint, which makes it a half-heritage unit. This isn’t rocket science 🤷♂️
@@NorthCountryTrains The "hate" is from the wider community. Not you in particular, however I've seen "half-heritage" used in a derogatory manor to refer to CSX's heritage fleet. And unlike that "wider community", I come from a position of I cant just hope on Heritageunits and see where one of my railroad's engines are 'cuz they're all scrapped, soon to be scrapped, or are either in CP, or RCPE paint. And from what I've seen, that's 3/4th a heritage unit...I dunno what kind of catchy phrase would go with that, but ya know..."half" works. I'm just tired of all the negative discourse to these engines and others. If it wasn't UP's fleet of heritage unit's it was NS', CPKC's, CN's, or Amtrak's...I'm just tired of it...and it never seems to stop. Even with NS' new heritage unit (the "TAG" unit(?)), lot's of folk ALREADY hating it as if they get a say...with never having to experience there railroad literally fade into history in less than a decade without a single "heritage" unit, and now in the 2020's, dwindling numbers of original hoppers & gondola's from that railroad. if it sounds like I've lived that, it's cuz I did. That railroad that's now the RCPE aint as big as the PRR, NYC, or ATSF, but it faded FASTER than those railroads. The NYC & PRR lived into the Conrail era and even today as heritage units, ATSF lives on today in the BNSF, the DRGW, and SP live on today on various short lines, and actively as heritage units....I don't have that luxury of having any heritage units. There are no preserved DM&E SD10's, SD40's Gp40's GP38's, or GP9's. I legit got NOTHING, which is why I don't understand the negative discourse,
People tend to not like CSX Heritage units because they are not painted fully. I've seen and heard that so many times
