He was the source of all of the planet's problems (aside from the mako extractions by Shinra). Most of the characters' lives were changed due to Hojo. He murdered and infused Vincent with a handful of monsters, stole Red XIII and Aerith for experimentation and breeding since they were the last of their kind, used Cloud and Zack as experiments to be Sephiroth clones, and injected his unborn son with Jenova cells, then stole Sephiroth from Lucrecia and brainwashed him into believing Jenova was his mother all along. Hojo was the main cause for the planet's near destruction. Vincent should have shot him while he had the chance...
It’s the moral ambiguity thing.... Sephiroth is the main villain because of his actions within the game, however Hojo is the puppet master behind the scenes twisting everyone to his own ends.
The fact that Cloud and Vincent both had really rough times in their lives before they meet, is probably why they get along so well compared to others.
Not to detract from this comment (especially given that it's a year old), but I shouldn't call Vincent's story "rough times." I'd say Cloud went through rough times compared to Vincent, whilst Vincent went through Hell. Like, holy shit.

I really don't know why everyone hates Dirge of Cerberus so much. I played the shit out of this game in my youth and loved the story as much as the gameplay. This is the only game that's still on my list I want to see a remaster of. Then all of my relevant PS2 games have been ported

It’s great, I love the story and I would really like a sequel that’s a couple years (maybe up to 5 years) after the events of Dirge of Cerberus. That’d be very nice because it would probably show Vincent going back to the original FFVII crew as well as hanging out with Shelk (or however you spell her name) as she tries to revive Shalua (or maybe show us that Shalua has recovered and is aiding the WRO with her little sister in restoring Midgar and the other destroyed cities across the planet). Who knows maybe Vincent will be able to find a way to revive Lucretia and thus also he finds Genesis maybe recovering and beginning a new conflict (probably genesis trying to restore Angeal and Sephiroth and the 3 of them try to take over the world). But that’s my...dare I say it...final fantasy for FFVII XD
I'm so hoping the Remake fleshes out Vincent's story and his relationship with Hojo. For an optional character, he ended up having an interesting connection to Sephiroth and the greater story. - Plus Hojo kinda suffers for taking a back seat to Sephiroth all the time even though he's basically the reason everything happens in the story (Sephiroth's brith, experimenting on Cloud, etc). Having a character who's more interested in taking that psycho out once and for all and treats defeating Sephiroth as a means of redemption really sets Vincent apart from the rest of the group.
vincent should be one of the main characters, just like you said because he is related to every bad guy in ff7 story. i hope they make it that vincent has much more personal story in the remake. vincent had motive and also obligation to stop Sephiroth, Hojo, and Shinra.
Vincent's character is what Cloud always wanted to be but couldn't. There's even a piece of dialogue in the original FF7, if i remember correctly, that has Cloud admiring Vincent's way of being "cool" overall.
What's really funny about this is that I'm pretty sure there's some dialogue between him and Tifa revealing that he's not even doing it on purpose, like he has NO self awareness, he's just depressed
Not alot of people relize just how fucking hard Vincent was to unlock,with most people not even trying to do so. It involves cryptic puzzles of many kinds includeing number puzzles and music puzzles. In the days before the internet it was like "good luck doing this" yet hes one of the most famous..very likely due to the fact that he was so hard to unlock.

I find it heartbreaking (perhaps a bit humorous) that Lucrecia fit herself with a gown before shielding herself in a crystal cocoon. Was she dressing herself for her own funeral? Or was she like, yo, just in case I meet up with my starcross lover; imma gonna dress like a bride, even tho I see myself as guilty and sinful and unworthy.
If you actually take the context into consideration, its not too wild to say its the funeral reason as thats where she went to exile herself and hopefully die one day

@Owen Marble If it's about characters then nah, Japan loves using astrology to provide information about characters personalities. Same thing with blood type. That's why anime/manga/jrpgs will have birth dates and blood type on character guides, even if they have no relevancy to the story at all. From my experience, astrology and Japan's blood type personality culture is popular in East Asia. I remember growing up as a kid seeing shows hiring "professionals" to explain stuff like that and how they affect your daily/annual horoscope and your life etc. A lot of times when I get to know new people, they would always ask what constellation you are or your blood type. And when you answer, they'll be like "oh, so I'm guessing you tend to be like ___?" And in conversations there'll be people saying "well he/she's a [insert constellation] so that's why he/she's doing it, [said constellation] are often ____", discussions on what their blood type might be by basing on their personality and blood-type/constellations tend to be brought up when talking about the personalities of real people they've interacted with. I don't believe any of these are real, but in regards to fictional characters from Asian stories I'm 100% sure the creators do intend for the astrology of characters to be taken as canon, since literally everyone here thinks that way.
Vincent Valentine was my very first crush way back in middle school and now here I am 30, married, and a mom of one and nothing has changed, I'm still crushing on him.
There's so much symbolic meaning to his story and how it can relate to things in life. He was only wanting to protect someone he really cared about. Only to become subjected to so much pain, where the person he cared about pushed him away; and went to something that wasn't really good for them - relative to life's battles which can take it's toll on you and either make you or break you. Which is relevant to Vincent's story - all these things that happened against him, yet he still saw the hope in his situation in making things right; regardless of how much torment he went through. Even by the one he cared for most but still fought with all he had. With Vincent he had every reason to become evil after what he had to deal with. But he chose to pursue a path of righteousness; even though he had every excuse from the pain and hurt he went through. It reflects that some things we go through in life can change us, and at times turn us into something where we ain't the same, but you can still turn things around. Vincent is a symbol of that. That hope even in your darkest time that can still reconcile the wrongs, and be content with yourself. Some would say Vincent is a monster, but he's not. He's the result of bad things that happened to him, but the hope, love, and his will to fight for liberty determined who he'd become. A hero. A hope. An example that you can make things right even in your darkest time.
Personally he pisses me off because his weak mentality makes him a slave to his past. He is a slave to Lucrecia and pathetically sits like a mutt when he could be out there making a new life and meeting some one new to live and love with. He has no liberty what so ever as far as we seen.

I missed Vicent on my first playthrough, but a friend at school told me about him I loaded up my save prior to the northern cave and went and found him I was not disappointed possibly my favorite character in FF7
All this FF7 remake just renewed my teenage obsession with Vincent. I love him so much. His character,his tragic story, his brooding gorgeousness...what is it with us females falling for the tortured soul? lol such a well made character.

Great work! Vincent is also a masterclass in character design. I always thought that contributed to his appeal. He LOOKS awesome! : ) I LOVED the mystique of his original FFVII iteration.
My favorite character in the game besides Cloud, Vincent is the reason I fell in love with Dante from Devil May Cry. He was like Vincent and Cloud combined lol

Yeah from what I remember the experiments on Vincent are what made him semi-immortal not Chaos and the Proto Materia. Chaos allowed Vincent to recover from the deathlike state he was in when Hojo shot him and the Proto Materia kept Chaos from running rampant. When he lost those at the end of Dirge, Vincent's body is still modified from Hojo's experiments, meaning his is semi-immortal and can still change into this other three forms or at least Galion Beast.
I love the idea of Red XIII casually dragging his overnight suitcase, buying a train ticket, heading over to Midgar to meet up with his ol’ buddy Vinny for a boys weekend.

One of the characters that have interested me the most is Genesis lol. I liked his design and the way he spoke. He wasn’t evil even though his actions did set the stage for Sephiroth lol

I don’t think she went willingly. She and Vincent genuinely loved each other, so it seems unlikely that she would leave him for no reason. My guess is that Hojo was involved in breaking them up. Going off of both statements made in game, scrapped ideas and the mythohistory that inspired Lucrecia’s backstory, what happened to cause the split was probably very painful.
Dirge Of Cerberus doesn't need a remaster, it needs a remake. Honestly, Vincent is my favorite FF character of all time and literally is the character that got me into FF ENTIRELY. But with the outdated gameplay and the short storyline of DOC though, it makes it difficult to fully give him the credit he deserves as a character since he ties in way too well with the story even as a secret character in the original FFVII. I feel like he is a character with way too much potential and important plot points to just be a B-Lister in the franchise, he SERIOUSLY needs a game that acts like a redemption arc in video game history.
Look, all I'm saying is; Sephiroth looks a lot more like Vincent than he does Hojo. You can argue that it's the Jenova genes, but even Lucrecia must've known what's good!

I know this will be unpopular but i like going with the theory of sephiroth being vincent's son. Yes i know hojo being canon, but think about it. What if vincent and lucrecia had a relationship, after vince finds out about his father, she was pregnant but stayed quiet and gave herself to hojo to make it seem like it was his. And seph does share a lot of similar features to vince (yes, the real reason he looks nothing like hojo is because of the jenova cells, sons tend to look more like their mothers, and the only thing he inherited was his forehead). Like i said, just a theory and fun to think about, even if its not canon

Some extra trivia: there is a mobile game that is tied into FF:Dirge of Cerberus that was nearly lost. It took place between some of the later events in DoC, and I distinctly remember having an ad for it with my copy of the game. It was for flipphones, and I always wondered how that was possible.
I watching this on my ps3 through TH-cam too lol. I live Vincent reminds me of one if my friends. He's always grumpy and moody but with a heart of gold.
One of my all time favourite characters in all of the Final Fantasy series. Love his character and story and the development throughout. His story is very reminiscent of the main character of my favourite anime coincidentally, Gungrave.
good video! really in-depth look at almost this characters entire history throughout all the various media they've been in! I actually, somewhat liked Dirge of Cerberus, despite the community's terrible opinion of it. It was a fresh take and pretty much the 1st of its kind, taking a difference stance or approach for a FF-based game that wasn't turn-based RPG, but rather, action RPG, utilizing shooters as its basis. The lore, all still very much FF. I could see how some might not have liked the gameplay, but they took a chance on it. and of course, the graphics being what they were, on the PS2, were pretty limited. Vincent is indeed a really cool character.

I refuse to believe that Hojo is Sephiroth's father. Sephy and Vincent look very much a like. I say that Lucretia married Hojo while with child from Vincent and Hojo experimented on the growing fetus inside of her because he didn't care since it wasn't his. Just my wishful thinking, lol.

Are u sure that he loses Chaos at the end of doc. Cuz in the case of Nanaki, the two of them meet at midgar once a year. This is because Nanaki realised that he was going to outlive most of his friends, but not Vincent. If it is Chaos that was making Vincent immortal, the he would age again and Nanaki and him wouldn’t be able to see each other. This is the reason why at the end of 7 it cuts to 500 years later to see Nanaki with cubs heading to a moss covered midgar, to see Vincent. But if he lost Chaos then that ending wouldn’t happen. Awww that’s really sad...
During the ending of Dirge of Cerberus, Vincent tells Lucrecia that Chaos has returned to the planet. It's therefore implied that he no longer has the power within him. That being said, I'm pretty sure Vincent is still immortal due to Hojo's experimentation :) ~Darryl

There are several resources stating that SE has quietly renewed their trademark for Dirge of Cerberus since earlier this year. The rumors say that their logo is different as well, but no one has actually seen the logo. However, sources have confirmed that SE is bringing Dirge of Cerberus back, more than likely to implement the contents into the Remake instead of a stand-alone game. We've already seen this evidence in the boss-fights we've encountered, such as the Failed Experiments and the boss fight from Deepground. There's talk that even the Protomateria is going to have a huge impact on the story. Vincent will definitely be having a stronger spotlight this time.
So technically Sephiroth's real parents were Hojo and Lucrecia [while he was also infused with Jenova cells]? Vincent got to see all that was happening before one of the game's most iconic villains was created. Lol, I love FF games because the characters and their backstories are all so complex and well-done.
14:29 they added Yuffie and Vincent on Midgar because back on the FF7 PS1, they were not canon to the story due that those 2 were optional characters, meanwhile, the team until their canon character cid, everybody was on the crater, but not those 2.

Stuy777 I kind of doubt that. Luce and Vincent did love one another, but Luce and Hojo are the parents of Sephiroth. Hojo told Seph that his mother was Jonova, and Seph never knew who his father was.

@Owen Marble If it's about characters then nah, Japan loves using astrology to provide information about characters personalities. Same thing with blood type. That's why anime/manga/jrpgs will have birth dates and blood type on character guides, even if they have no relevancy to the story at all.
From my experience, astrology and Japan's blood type personality culture is popular in East Asia. I remember growing up as a kid seeing shows hiring "professionals" to explain stuff like that and how they affect your daily/annual horoscope and your life etc. A lot of times when I get to know new people, they would always ask what constellation you are or your blood type. And when you answer, they'll be like "oh, so I'm guessing you tend to be like ___?" And in conversations there'll be people saying "well he/she's a [insert constellation] so that's why he/she's doing it, [said constellation] are often ____", discussions on what their blood type might be by basing on their personality and blood-type/constellations tend to be brought up when talking about the personalities of real people they've interacted with.
I don't believe any of these are real, but in regards to fictional characters from Asian stories I'm 100% sure the creators do intend for the astrology of characters to be taken as canon, since literally everyone here thinks that way.

There's so much symbolic meaning to his story and how it can relate to things in life.
He was only wanting to protect someone he really cared about. Only to become subjected to so much pain, where the person he cared about pushed him away; and went to something that wasn't really good for them - relative to life's battles which can take it's toll on you and either make you or break you. Which is relevant to Vincent's story - all these things that happened against him, yet he still saw the hope in his situation in making things right; regardless of how much torment he went through. Even by the one he cared for most but still fought with all he had. With Vincent he had every reason to become evil after what he had to deal with. But he chose to pursue a path of righteousness; even though he had every excuse from the pain and hurt he went through.
It reflects that some things we go through in life can change us, and at times turn us into something where we ain't the same, but you can still turn things around. Vincent is a symbol of that. That hope even in your darkest time that can still reconcile the wrongs, and be content with yourself. Some would say Vincent is a monster, but he's not. He's the result of bad things that happened to him, but the hope, love, and his will to fight for liberty determined who he'd become. A hero. A hope. An example that you can make things right even in your darkest time.
Personally he pisses me off because his weak mentality makes him a slave to his past. He is a slave to Lucrecia and pathetically sits like a mutt when he could be out there making a new life and meeting some one new to live and love with. He has no liberty what so ever as far as we seen.
If he had liberty. The story would have ended too fast as he could faceslap every villain in ff7 in his full chaos form

I missed Vicent on my first playthrough, but a friend at school told me about him I loaded up my save prior to the northern cave and went and found him I was not disappointed possibly my favorite character in FF7

My favorite character in the game besides Cloud, Vincent is the reason I fell in love with Dante from Devil May Cry. He was like Vincent and Cloud combined lol

Yeah from what I remember the experiments on Vincent are what made him semi-immortal not Chaos and the Proto Materia. Chaos allowed Vincent to recover from the deathlike state he was in when Hojo shot him and the Proto Materia kept Chaos from running rampant. When he lost those at the end of Dirge, Vincent's body is still modified from Hojo's experiments, meaning his is semi-immortal and can still change into this other three forms or at least Galion Beast.
I love the idea of Red XIII casually dragging his overnight suitcase, buying a train ticket, heading over to Midgar to meet up with his ol’ buddy Vinny for a boys weekend.

I don’t think she went willingly. She and Vincent genuinely loved each other, so it seems unlikely that she would leave him for no reason. My guess is that Hojo was involved in breaking them up.
Going off of both statements made in game, scrapped ideas and the mythohistory that inspired Lucrecia’s backstory, what happened to cause the split was probably very painful.

Dirge Of Cerberus doesn't need a remaster, it needs a remake. Honestly, Vincent is my favorite FF character of all time and literally is the character that got me into FF ENTIRELY. But with the outdated gameplay and the short storyline of DOC though, it makes it difficult to fully give him the credit he deserves as a character since he ties in way too well with the story even as a secret character in the original FFVII. I feel like he is a character with way too much potential and important plot points to just be a B-Lister in the franchise, he SERIOUSLY needs a game that acts like a redemption arc in video game history.

I know this will be unpopular but i like going with the theory of sephiroth being vincent's son. Yes i know hojo being canon, but think about it. What if vincent and lucrecia had a relationship, after vince finds out about his father, she was pregnant but stayed quiet and gave herself to hojo to make it seem like it was his. And seph does share a lot of similar features to vince (yes, the real reason he looks nothing like hojo is because of the jenova cells, sons tend to look more like their mothers, and the only thing he inherited was his forehead). Like i said, just a theory and fun to think about, even if its not canon

Some extra trivia: there is a mobile game that is tied into FF:Dirge of Cerberus that was nearly lost. It took place between some of the later events in DoC, and I distinctly remember having an ad for it with my copy of the game. It was for flipphones, and I always wondered how that was possible.

I actually, somewhat liked Dirge of Cerberus, despite the community's terrible opinion of it. It was a fresh take and pretty much the 1st of its kind, taking a difference stance or approach for a FF-based game that wasn't turn-based RPG, but rather, action RPG, utilizing shooters as its basis.
The lore, all still very much FF.
I could see how some might not have liked the gameplay, but they took a chance on it. and of course, the graphics being what they were, on the PS2, were pretty limited.

Are u sure that he loses Chaos at the end of doc. Cuz in the case of Nanaki, the two of them meet at midgar once a year. This is because Nanaki realised that he was going to outlive most of his friends, but not Vincent. If it is Chaos that was making Vincent immortal, the he would age again and Nanaki and him wouldn’t be able to see each other. This is the reason why at the end of 7 it cuts to 500 years later to see Nanaki with cubs heading to a moss covered midgar, to see Vincent. But if he lost Chaos then that ending wouldn’t happen. Awww that’s really sad...
During the ending of Dirge of Cerberus, Vincent tells Lucrecia that Chaos has returned to the planet. It's therefore implied that he no longer has the power within him. That being said, I'm pretty sure Vincent is still immortal due to Hojo's experimentation :) ~Darryl

There are several resources stating that SE has quietly renewed their trademark for Dirge of Cerberus since earlier this year. The rumors say that their logo is different as well, but no one has actually seen the logo. However, sources have confirmed that SE is bringing Dirge of Cerberus back, more than likely to implement the contents into the Remake instead of a stand-alone game. We've already seen this evidence in the boss-fights we've encountered, such as the Failed Experiments and the boss fight from Deepground. There's talk that even the Protomateria is going to have a huge impact on the story. Vincent will definitely be having a stronger spotlight this time.

14:29 they added Yuffie and Vincent on Midgar because back on the FF7 PS1, they were not canon to the story due that those 2 were optional characters, meanwhile, the team until their canon character cid, everybody was on the crater, but not those 2.
